If it were any other way, it would disappear…like Hendrix, Zappa and Cage. But their ideas live on… • KEY MARKETS: Oakland and San Francisco

Anna Maria Friman, soprano/John Potter, tenor/Morgan Goff, viola/Nick Cooper, cello/Gavin Bryars, double bass BRYARS: Oi Me Lasso (15 selections from Laudes Cortonese)
• Oi Me Lasso is representative of a series of Gavin Bryars works inspired by the unaccompanied laudes (songs of praise to the Virgin Mary) popular in the later Middle Ages, particularly the 14th century collection known as Laudes Cortonese • Composing some 50 of these modern interpretations of the laudes has become an ongoing project for Bryars, slipped in between other projects he is working on. Each lauda is dedicated to the performer(s) for whom it was written, always including soprano Anna Maria Friman • John Potter was a member of the Hilliard Ensemble from 1984 to 2001, was the founder of the early music group Red Byrd, and has enjoyed a long association with ECM Records and Manfred Eicher. His discography runs to some 140 titles, with several on ECM including best-selling recordings with the Dowland Project • Anna Maria Friman is a member of the spectacularly successful Norwegian early music group Trio Medieval, which records for ECM, and she has made numerous solo appearances with important early and new music groups • Gavin Bryars’s numerous recordings have been among the best-selling CDs by any contemporary composer. “Zinman’s Beethoven...is swift, lean, exhilarating and
transparent. The Tonhalle copes bravely, often with exceptional skill, and the recordings easily compare with their best full-price rivals.” — The Gramophone Good CD Guide Tonhalle Orchestra, Zürich/David Zinman, conductor BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 7 in A, Op. 92 • Symphony No. 8 in F, Op. 93
• The world premiere of these symphonies on modern instruments using the New Bärenreiter Edition • The recording follows the new critical edition of the original manuscript of Beethoven’s symphonies prepared by Jonathan Del Mar and recently issued as part of the complete edition of his works • David Zinman’s Beethoven symphony cycle has garnered rave reviews worldwide, winning the German Record Critics’ prize in 1999 • It is hard to believe today, but it was not until the premiere of the Seventh Symphony on December 8, 1813 that the Viennese public first waxed enthusiastic about a Beethoven symphony. All the previous symphonies had been received somewhat coolly, or with hostility • Unfortunately, the Eighth symphony was premiered on the same concert, and its reputation suffered in comparison, a perhaps unfair judgment which has continued to the present day in many quarters • This disc continues the reissued series of Zinman’s Beethoven symphonies available on single discs.

• A total of eight works by Mendelssohn have come down to us which can be ascribed to the genre of the string quartet. Already, in his first proper quartets, we can see that the young composer was not only building on the classical models of Haydn and Mozart, but had also made an intensive and creative study of Beethoven’s late quartet works, which many of his contemporaries dismissed as being “spiritual thought music” or “a deaf musician’s wild fantasies in sound” • The Henschel Quartet have been awarded a number of prizes for their interpretations, especially for their much-recognized recording of Ginastera string quartets for Arte Nova • The quartet performs regularly in prestigious chamber music cycles worldwide and is a guest at numerous renowned music festivals • The Henschel Quartet has won numerous prizes since 1995, and their highly acclaimed stand-in for the Juilliard Quartet in London’s Wigmore Hall, broadcast by the BBC, led to international recognition as one of today’s finest chamber ensembles

Carl ORFF
• Carmina Burana (“Songs from Benediktbeuren”) is the most famous choral composition of German composer Carl Orff (1895 –1982), and one of the most popular classical works of the 20th century • The powerful opening chorus “O Fortuna” has been used in countless movies and TV commercials to establish a mood of exciting expectation • This recording features the London Festival Orchestra under the direction of its founder, Ross Pople • A native of New Zealand, Pople began studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London at age 16. Later he studied at the Paris Conservatory with André Navarra and Nadia Boulanger • Ross Pople was handpicked at age 23 by Yehudi Menuhin to be principal solo cellist of the Menuhin Festival Orchestra, where his ability was given free expression as he toured the world • At 26, Pople was invited by Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez to be principal cellist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra – the youngest ever in the history of the orchestra! • Pople’s numerous recordings for Hyperion and ASV have attracted positive reviews, and he has been seen and heard often on the BBC

Long Night is an exquisitely drifting, ever-unfolding work for three pianos, all of which are played by noted new music pianist Sarah Cahill. Kyle Gann is a highly regarded composer, author, and award-winning critic (prolifically penning over 2,000 articles for 40 publications) who has written about new music for the Village Voice since 1986. Rick COX Fade Rick Cox, electric & prepared guitar/Thomas Newman, piano/Peter Freeman, electronic processing COX: Fade
In three connected movements, Fade collects a series of harmonic “moments” of varying densities, complexities, timbres and lengths. Throughout the work, these moments – like elements in a mobile – are in a constant state of changing perspective. Composer Rick Cox is a composer/multi-instrumentalist whom guitarist/composer Ry Cooder called “the hidden master of the crepuscular and the diaphanous.” Cox was an early explorer/developer of “prepared electric guitar” techniques, and his concert pieces often employ himself (electric guitar, woodwinds, and electronics) in the company of other instrumentalists. He performs and records with Jon Hassel and his unique sounds are heard on many of Thomas Newman’s popular film scores.

Jim FOX Descansos, past
ORDER DATE MARCH 25, 2005
“Jim Fox’s latest piece inhabits the same haunted soundscape as his 2004 release The City The Wind Swept Away — the unconventional scoring (pizzicato bass and nine bowed cellos) produces a sort of lush bleakness that evokes the windswept open spaces of the American West. Perhaps Descansos evokes the strange roadside memorials that gave Fox his title, but to these Eastern ears, it is reminiscent of the brooding lyricism of England’s Gavin Bryars. This is a music that seems to linger even after the recording itself has ended.” — New Sounds Barry Newton, double bass/Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, Jessica Catron, Aniela Perry & Rachel Arnold, cellos FOX: Descansos, past

• Israeli-born Natan Brand (1944 –1990) was one of the few keyboard artists — perhaps the last — in the true tradition of Anton Rubinstein: a pianist who played in the Grand Style, fully free to interpret the masterworks as the spirit moved him, with a magnificent technique at his command • His premature death at the age of 46 robbed the music world of a man who was considered by many connoisseurs to be potentially one of the world’s greatest pianists. That he was not so recognized was due to his mercurial temperament (which did him little good in the world of concerts and bookings) and his early death • There has been only one previous CD release of this phenomenal artist’s work. This two-CD set is thus a priceless document sure to be snapped up by any devotee of great piano performance • These private tapes from various live venues from 1982 to 1990 are published here for the first time under the supervision of pianist Geoffrey Dorfman, a Brand pupil • Dorfman provides the fascinating essay included in the album, telling the story of the life and art of this singular musician • Service to over 200 radio and press outlets. Intense PR campaign planned. Ads in American Record Guide, Gramophone, and targeted journals

• An accessible ethno-classical delight…music that grabs you by the heart! • These pieces originated in folk melodies, but since there are so many cultural crossovers in the region, you are likely to find all kinds of very different ethnic influences within • For some of the melodies, the sound of Greece or Turkey is a prevailing mood; the others have a more Eastern European flavor, Bulgarian in particular; and finally, romances like “My Aching Heart,” grown out of Russian and Hungarian gypsy music, show yet another aspect of that intercultural communication • A trio of imaginative and jaunty classically trained musicians has chosen to cultivate them, each one interpreting them through his own instrument and experience • In the end, you cannot put any particular label on this music: there is a soulful expression that is not soul, and a bit of blues specific to the area, passionate and dark • An amazing story of Serbian survival, Milan Milosevic (clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone), was a member of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra from 1990 – 99. In 1995, as a member of the New Music Ensemble, he won a prize for interpretation at the International Tribune of Composers. Since then, he has performed and toured extensively with international orchestras and ensembles. • Service to over 200 radio and press outlets. Intense PR campaign planned. This is a reissue of a recording that was scantily distributed first time around. The works selected for this recording were originally conceived for a different instrumentation. Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 were both written for solo piano, while Bizet’s Carmen Suites were taken from the opera. As this recording will demonstrate, the brass quintet is more than capable of doing justice to such challenging works. Widely acclaimed as one of the world’s finest brass ensembles, the Atlantic Brass Quintet has been heard in 48 of the United States and more than a dozen countries across four continents, performing a unique repertory spanning the Renaissance to the present.

Daltrocanto/Dario Tabbia, director CELLAVENIA: Missa Laetare Nova Sion • Motets
• Francesco Cellavenia was born, lived and worked in the first half of the 16th century in Casale Monferrato as chapelmaster of the town cathedral. We don’t know when he was born, but he certainly died in 1567 • Missa Laetare Nova Sioni was inspired by the motet of the same name by Andrea De Silva and is one of Cellavenia’s major works. It was first published in a printed edition in 1532. Cellavenia was starting with quality material, but demonstrates his own thorough ability and ease with the Mass form • The collection of pieces on this CD gives an idea of Cellavenia’s creative evolution. He started when composers such as Mouton and Gombert dominated the scene. He was also very much aware of composers working in Italy, the biggest influence being Costanzo Festa. Cellavenia clearly shows that his own approach had always been marked by northern influences, although his work remains essentially the product of Italian humanism • Dario Tabbia, leader of the a capella vocal ensemble Daltrocanto, is one of six internationally famed choral directors chosen to lead the International Singing Week choral festival in Venice, Italy late this summer

Alessandro SCARLATTI
• The music of Alessandro Scarlatti, mostly vocal and choral in nature, has in recent years become more and more familiar through recordings, despite the greater fame of his son Domenico Scarlatti, composer of the famous harpsichord sonatas • Scarlatti’s Christmas Mass is dated December 1707 and is for nine-voice double choir, two violins and organ • Conductor Michele Gasbarro found the parts of this Mass among other works of Alessandro Scarlatti in the archives of Santa Maria Maggiore, where the composer served as chapelmaster • While it has typically baroque features, the overall style of the work is “alla Palestrina,” which is Scarlatti’s very own favorite definition of his compositions at this particular period in his creative output • On the present recording, the performance follows the liturgical practice of the time and the musical tradition of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore: the Ordinarium Missae, i.e., Scarlatti’s Mass, alternates with the Gregorian chant “Proprium” from the Mass “Ad Primam in Nocte” and with motets and compositions for organ • Booklet contains the complete text in English, Italian, French and German

Death in Venice was Britten’s last opera and this live recording at the Aldeburgh Festival on June 22, 1973 (the year of its premiere) is an irreplaceable document of one of the greatest 20th-century operas. The title role was composed expressly for Peter Pears, who sings it here.
This historic mono recording has long been considered one of the greatest ever made of Puccini’s first successful opera, but this is the first time it has ever been made available at budget price. This is simply some of the most beautiful singing you will ever hear. Rome Opera House, July 1954.

“[Beecham] generates a performance of extraordinary drama and theatricality, without once detracting from the heart-stopping beauty of the music. His casting is outstanding. Erna Schluter is still thought by many to have been the most exciting performer of the opera's title role...” — The Rough Guide to Opera Any operatic recording conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham is a historic event, and this live 1947 broadcast is no exception! An all-star cast makes up one of the great recordings ever of this searing drama, with the legendary Ljuba Welitsch, herself a famous Salome, singing Chrysothemis.
APRIL 2005
“... One of the best live recordings available. Cerquetti made few recordings; this performance makes you wonder why… Corelli sings magnificently throughout, with an exhuberance that knocks the spots off everything recorded in the studio, including his own performance for EMI.” —The Rough Guide to Opera The presence of Franco Corelli on this Norma is by itself enough to drive sales to a mass audience. But Anita Cerquetti in the title role? This fabulous soprano, whose career was cut short by ill health, had the voice most like that of Maria Callas, and her recordings are few. Connoisseurs will line up! Live performance, January 4, 1958.

WORLD LOS MUNEQUITOS DE MATANZAS Live in L.A. “To Americans smitten by the Buena Vista Social Club, Cuban music is all about lilting melodies, genteel rhythms and pre-Castro romanticism. … “ Reveals an unusual mixture of James Taylor’s gentle introspection and Gilberto Gil’s thoughtful writing. It is music that, in addition to its appealing acoustic qualities, takes decidedly assertive points of view via lyrics and attitude, and represents an important new shift in African pop.” —Los Angeles Times Fe at u r e d A rt i sts Henri Dikongué, vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion/Jean-Paul Flores, guitar/Ludovic Mantion, piano/Etienne Mbappè, bass

Se l l i n g P o i n ts • Henri Dikongué is a spearhead in the revival of the acoustic sounds of Cameroon. In contrast to the country’s high-spirited dance music, Dikongué’s music is more introspective and melodic • Although African rhythms remain the foundation of Dikongué’s music, his songs reflect influences like reggae, samba, salsa, soul and jazz • His goal is “to be able to show people that African music is not just a danceable music but there are a lot of different kinds of African music!”
