• Features four Grammy Award-winning artists on one disc! • As Beethoven himself was well aware, his Concerto for Piano, Violin and Cello – commonly called the Triple Concerto – was unique in musical literature. No one had ever written for this combination of solo instruments and orchestra • The Triple Concerto was first performed in Vienna in 1804, and apparently never again in Beethoven’s lifetime! • The work was neglected for years and is still somewhat overshadowed by the other Beethoven concertos, but this is in large part due to its extraordinary requirements for three major virtuosi • This recording offers three of today’s leading soloists along with conductor David Zinman, whose Beethoven recordings have already become first choices with many listeners • Since making his debut at London’s Festival Hall in 1981, pianist Yefim Bronfman has regularly played with the most renowned European, American and Far Eastern symphony orchestras. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1991 and a Grammy Award in 1997 • Israeli-American violinist Gil Shaham (b. 1971) studied at Juilliard and in 1990 was awarded the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant. Since then, he has pursued an extremely active international career and made numerous CD recordings. Gil Shaham plays a Stradivarius dating from 1699 • Truls Mørk has long been one of the most renowned international cellists and plays with the world’s leading symphony orchestras and conductors. An enthusiastic chamber musician, he undertook a successful tour of the U.S. with violinist Gil Shaham and pianist Yefim Bronfman in 2003 • Born in 1936, American conductor David Zinman has risen to the pinnacle of his career in the last decade. His discography of some 100 recordings has won five Grammys and two Grands Prix du Disque • Founded in 1868, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra is Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra

• Included as a major bonus is a splendid performance of Beethoven’s early and massive chamber work masterpiece, the Septet, Op. 20

• Fauré’s nocturnes are, after Chopin’s, among the most beautiful and beloved in the piano literature. Spiritual Madrigals

Cantica Symphonia/Giuseppe Maletto & Kees Boeke, directors

Gli Erranti/Alessandro Casari, conductor

FESTA: Motets for 3-6 voices

MARENZIO: Spiritual madrigals for 5 voices (1584)

Costanzo Festa (ca. 1490–1545) entered the service of the papal chapel in Rome in 1517 and remained there until his death. His surviving output includes four Masses, 30 hymns, a large quantity of madrigals, and more than 40 motets. Festa was one of the principal composers in the generation of early madrigalists. Cantica Symphonia’s edition of these works has been greeted with critical acclaim. The group is a vocal and instrumental ensemble made up of seasoned early music specialists.

Luca Marenzio (1553–1599) was a central figure in 16th century music, creating “the modern music of madrigal” as historian Ottavio Rossi rightly points out. The “spiritual madrigal” flourished significantly in the second half of the 1500s in the hands of such composers as Palestrina and Monteverdi. It was a good compromise, typical of the culture of the Counter Reformation, between religious content and a secular musical form.

Robert SCHUMANN Für meine Clara

CD: WTR 113 (R)

• This CD presents two highlights of the German Romantic repertoire, works written by Robert Schumann for his beloved wife Clara • The quintet, dedicated to Clara, and the canons were part of the permanent repertoire she played until the end of her career • Especially in the quintet, with its difficult and almost solistic piano part, Clara could show her extraordinary skills as one of the most famous pianists of her time • The canons for three hands were the result of Clara and Robert studying both counterpoint and fugues by Bach. During Mendelssohn’s visit to the Schumann household in Dresden in 1845, the couple played the pieces to the great joy of Bach’s re-discoverer • Op. 56 is one of Schumann’s most unknown compositions. This may be due to the fact that it was originally written for a pedal pianoforte, a specially prepared piano for practicing organ pieces. Federica Valli and Lorenzo Ghielmi have recorded Op. 56 on a special Graf pianoforte at the Villa Medici • La Gaia Scienza is a chamber ensemble that has made numerous acclaimed recordings on Winter & Winter, performing on historic instruments in a historic building • Keyboardist Lorenzo Ghielmi began his international career with Il Giardino Armonico

Roger NORRINGTON Conducts SCHUMANN Symphonies 2 & 4 Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra/Roger Norrington, conductor SCHUMANN: Symphony No. 2 in C, Op. 61 • Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120 • Concert introduction by Roger Norrington, spoken in English

This record is part of a series of live recordings that the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR) has made in the Liederhalle every year. All are characterized by a serious attention to historical playing style that has normally been associated only with period instrument orchestras. Norrington plays with the “pure tone” so much talked about by the old masters, before the arrival of twentieth century vibrato. This beautiful, warm tone was the normal sound of every orchestra from Bach’s time to Mahler’s; Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Wagner never heard a good orchestra play with vibrato. A living document of the evolution of modern orchestral practice. CD: HNS 93161 (R) File Under: Classical

This disc documents the development of the “new” generation of German lute virtuosos who emerged following the devastating Thirty Years’ War, and how they began to build a new tradition of their own, adding new elements derived from Italian opera and local popular traditions which produced a new hybrid style of lute music with its own definite character. Joachim Held, currently one of Europe’s great lute scholars, has selected a program of works from a manuscript compiled by the priest and lute virtuoso, Ferdinand Fischer, housed in the famed archives of the Benedictine monastery of Kremsmünster, near Salzburg. • Vladimir Delman is not a name overly familiar to the English-speaking world, but in Italy, during his lifetime, he was widely considered the greatest living conductor of the Tchaikovsky symphonies, and a formidable rival for other composers as well (his recording of the Bruckner Ninth is on the short list of most collectors) • Delman, whom the pianist Simone Pedroni has called “a true giant of music [and] a visionary interpreter,” was born in Leningrad in 1923. He decided to leave the Soviet Union in 1974 and ended up in Italy, where he directed the Bologna Community Theater and the Milan RAI Symphony Orchestra, and then founded the Milan Giuseppe Verdi Orchestra, now conducted by Riccardo Chailly • An eccentric and enigmatic figure, Delman looked far older than he was, was demanding at rehearsals, and often exploded in fury if anyone else used his dressing room, spraying it with disinfectant afterwards to “make it inhabitable” • Whatever his personal oddities, and despite the fact that he seldom had a really first-class orchestra to work with, Vladimir Delman’s small legacy of recordings reveals an artist of the utmost fascination and brilliance, as these 1984 Tchaikovsky recordings reflect

• The names of four composers stand next to each other in the program of the present recording: one is world-famous, the others are known only to connoisseurs – but this “Tchaikovsky for cello” program would be unthinkable without them • Karl J. Davidov (1838–1889) was a cello teacher at the St. Petersburg Conservatory during Tchaikovsky’s era. His contemporaries Wilhelm Fitzenhagen (1848–1890) and Anatoli Brandukov (1856–1930) were associated with the Moscow Conservatory, and the latter studied with Tchaikovsky • The performers are also graduates of the Moscow Conservatory, including one of the greatest cellists of our times, David Geringas, who on this occasion appears as conductor, and his student Jens Peter Maintz • The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, formed by Saulius Sondeckis in 1960, has taken its place today among the finest such ensembles in the world

“…Playing the cycle twice through has given me much pleasure. • Born in 1839, Friedrich Gernsheim composed four symphonies between 1875 and 1895. Although widely admired in his day, Gernsheim was later dismissed as an imitator of Brahms – despite the fact that his first symphony premiered a year before the first symphony of Brahms! • In addition to his symphonies, Gernsheim left a wide-ranging oeuvre, comprising lieder, piano, choral, chamber and orchestra music. He died in 1916 • This is the first-ever integral recording of Gernsheim’s symphonies, and will appeal strongly to that segment of the classical market looking for the rediscovered Romantic masterpiece • 2009 will mark the ninetieth anniversary of the “Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz.” Siegfried Köhler is one of Europe’s busiest guest conductors

CLASSICAL ˇ ÁK Antonín DVOR Slavonic Dances Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria/Adrian Leaper, conductor ˇ ÁK: Slavonic Dances, Opp. 46 & 72 DVOR

CD: ANO 563500 (C)

Antonín Dvorˇák was a relatively unknown composer when Brahms recommended him to the publisher Simrock, who asked the aspiring musician to create some orchestral dances based on folk-like themes, much in the manner of Brahms’s own highly successful Hungarian Dances. The result was two books of eight pieces each, which gained Dvorˇák his first international success, especially in their orchestral versions (they were also written for piano four hands). The Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, which has been in existence since 1845, has recently gained an outstanding international reputation. Since the 1994 season, Adrian Leaper has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the orchestra. He is well known for his many successful recordings on the Naxos label.

Alberto Ginastera (1916–1983) is recognized today as the most important 20th century composer from Argentina. Influenced early by Bartók and Stravinsky, he rejected the use of electronically produced music; rather, he relied on the instruments of South American folk music to expand the expressive language of his operas, ballets, film music and chamber & piano works. His Piano Concerto No. 1, written in 1961, had a tremendous success worldwide and remains one of his best-known works. Pianist Martha Noguera was born in Buenos Aires, and currently resides in Rome. Jules MASSENET Ève

• Massenet’s “Mysterium” (oratorio) Ève, written in 1875, was the second of four religious works he wrote in a long career devoted mainly to opera • This composition purports to tell the story of original sin in paradise, but as ever with Massenet he cannot resist emphasizing the erotic aspects of the narrative • Massenet’s Mysterium in 3 Parts, with text by Louis Gallet, uses all of the dramatic possibilities for dramatizing the temptation to sin: a voice from heaven, voices of the night, spirits of hell, and the voices of nature accompany an event in which all reality is laid bare through allegory • Massenet used the term “Mysterium” instead of oratorio because he insisted it be presented in costume, thus not adhering to the definition • The Euregio Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1996, is comprised of first-class musicians from the Austrian, German and Czech Republic “Euregio” regions and pursues wide-ranging cultural and educational policies and aims • Conductor Jeanpierre Faber, a native of Luxembourg, studied with Herbert von Karajan and Sandor Végh, among others. Gundula Janowitz, Hermann Prey, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Reri Grist, Brigitte Fassbaender, Peter Schreier, vocal soloists/Orchestra & Chorus of the Vienna Opera/Karl Böhm, conductor • The newest release in Opera d’Oro’s Grand Tier series is of a live performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1972, with an all-star cast in one of Mozart’s greatest operas • Although everyone agrees today that Così fan tutte is one of the best in the “second tier” of Mozart’s operas, it was so unpopular for over a century that it was not only ignored, but occasionally banned. Beethoven reportedly complained that the subject was not serious enough, and subsequent critics felt the story to be too immoral to produce on a public stage • Certainly Così exhibits a prevailing amorality, even by today’s permissive standards, although modern exception to the tale is more likely to be based on its portrayal of women, not men, as the usual deceivers in love • “Böhm’s conducting is first rate…in the arias, he is a master of working with the cast. The cast is excellent. Janowitz sings with authority and her voice is beautiful, contrasting nicely with Fassbaender’s fine mezzo. Schreier is a notable Mozart tenor, and scores well in ‘Un aura amorosa.’ Prey is an ideal Guglielmo, Grist a delectable Despina, and Fischer-Dieskau a suave, commanding Alfonso.” — FANFARE

“ This live performance…is of particular interest to fans of mezzo Fiorenza Cossotto, here caught early in her career, before the voice had grown into the dramatic, Verdian instrument we’re familiar with. She sings Romeo well, with a fine, boyish tone. Otherwise unknown soprano Antonietta Pastori is a lovely Giulietta, singing with small, well-focused, pretty tone. Similarly not-famous Renato Gavarini is a very good Tebaldo – rhythmically accurate and exhibiting a good-sized, tonally pleasant tenor…its interesting to note what fine singers were floating around Italy in the 1950s; today they might be stars.” — ROBERT LEVINE, CLASSICSTODAY Fiorenza Cossotto, Antonietta Pastori, Renato Cavarini, Ivo Vinco, et al., vocal soloists/RAI Orchestra & Chorus, Rome/Lorin Maazel, conductor BELLINI: I Capuleti e i Montecchi (complete opera)

• Bellini’s opera version of the Romeo and Juliet story is one of his finest early works, the first to unequivocally display his mature style • It had a fully successful early run, although it has suffered much neglect in subsequent years, in modern times mostly because the part of Romeo is written for a mezzo-soprano • The opera is now customarily given in the original voice ranges, and the present recording is of one of the first modern performances to do so • Live performance, Rome, October 23, 1958 • “Cossotto is in splendid form…she commands every scene in which she appears…” — FANFARE • “…conducted with tremendous energy and drama by the then 27-year-old Lorin Maazel…Cossotto was then in such glorious voice that she arrests one’s attention at each of her appearances…Pastori…is an affecting heroine...” — GRAMOPHONE

PUCCINI: Edgar (complete opera)

In later years Puccini himself disowned Edgar, his second opera, referring to it as a “blunder,” and yet as we know, composers are often the worst judges of their own work, and even the least efforts of great composers usually have merits that are lacking in the best works of others. Today, Edgar has more admirers than ever before, its long-neglected beauties appreciated as early flowerings of a beloved composer.

PACINI: Saffo (complete opera)

If it had not been for Bellini, and Donizetti, and Verdi…and maybe even Cimarosa and Paisiello…Pacini would be famous today. But as he himself sadly admitted, he was not in their class: except for one opera, Saffo, into which he poured all his talent and a little more. Saffo was immediately recognized as Pacini’s masterpiece, and has continued to be the only Pacini opera to be widely revived. It is believed that Saffo influenced Verdi, particularly in his ensembles.

Whether you teach active yoga or just enjoy practicing yoga in your home, this is perfect to keep you moving. — ACCENT WEEKLY

Press Quotes

“ This is not your mother’s yoga music! Composed/performed/produced by DJ Free, his keyboards, Native flute and distinctive chanting flow along grooves laid down by master percussionist Brent Lewis…the overall feel is richly layered, a kind of primal naturalness mixed with an edgy urbanity. If one’s style of yoga, dance, or movement is highly energetic, this could be the perfect motivator.” — NAPRA REVIEW “ On Ice…DJ Free and Peter Schimke made sure all their musical chromosomes were properly aligned before hauling in a posse of luminaries, local and otherwise, to put the glisten on their first non-soundtrack collaboration. Even as a simple augmented duo, the programming whiz and keyboardist-around-town slide across genre boundaries with Olympic-caliber grace, mixing potentially unwieldy elements – shuffly house-music tectonics, serious jazz piano, and high-disco string pyrotechnics – as though they were water.” — CITY PAGES Featured Artists DJ Free, soundscapes, synthesizer, ambience/Brent Lewis, organic percussion/Jayson Fann, percussion/Richard Hardy, woodwinds, flutes/Peter Schimke, piano, synthesizer, keyboards/Enrique Toussaint, bass

FROM THE PRODUCERS OF THE RENOWNED ETHIOPIQUES SERIES!

The new Zanzibara series, which presents Swahili popular music through archive recordings from the 1920s – 1980s, has received early press accolades from Songlines, fRoots, Afropop Worldwide and more. As in the Ethiopiques series, all titles are accompanied by a well-produced booklet and plenty of photos!

Buda Records, the superb French “B label responsible for the life-altering Ethiopiques series, seems set to blow minds all over again with a new series called Zanzibara…there’s nothing else in the world like this phenomenal stuff.” —WORLDLY DISORIENTATION
