· Born in Palermo, Sicily in 1882, Gino Marinuzzi was eighteen years old when his first composition, a Requiem dedicated to King Umberto I, was successfully performed in 1900. · A year later he was music director of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, and soon making a name for himself outside of Italy, particularly conducting the works of Richard Strauss. Marinuzzi was also a friend of Puccini, and gave the premiere performance of La rondine in 1917. · Marinuzzi succeeded Busoni as director of the Bologna Conservatory in 1916, and came to the US just two years later as artistic director of the Chicago Opera Association. · Upon his return to Italy in the late 1930s, Marinuzzi directed the Rome Opera House, then worked at La Scala until his death in 1945. · Marinuzzi composed three operas.
