His vibrant, good-natured vocals and melody-rich guitar playing recall the sounds of 1930s and ‘40s string bands and barrelhouse bluesmen…Wells’ inviting voice is accompanied by guitar, banjo uke and harmonica joined, occasionally, on second guitar by Cool John Ferguson. • Violinist Jasper Wood has garnered international critical acclaim for his solo performances with orchestras and chamber music concerts. Known for his intimate and dazzling recitals, Wood is sought after as a musician with his own personal voice. He can be heard frequently on NPR in the United States and on the CBC in Canada • Pianist David Riley gave more than 50 concerts the past season, including two at the National Art Gallery in Washington DC and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. He has been heard on dozens of radio broadcasts on WQXR and WNYC in New York, Canada’s CBC, and NPR’s Performance Today • This unique CD explores the very accessible violin and piano music of Charles Ives. Here is little of the dissonance or rhythmic complexity that some listeners find difficult – this is music primarily of simplicity and beauty • Included are seven of Ives’s songs, arranged for violin and piano by Matthew Feurst and recorded here for the first time ever! The songs are: Wiel’ Auf Mir (“Eyes So Dark”), S.387; Feldeinsamkeit (“In Summer Fields”), S.250; Rosamunde, S.337; Berceuse, S.220; Kären, S.285; Omens and Oracles, S.317; and From “Night of Frost in May,” S.309 • “Encores there must be wherever Wood and Riley play: theirs is a beautiful collaboration…Wood is always a joy to hear…” — Gramophone

CLASSICAL Ferruccio BUSONI [After Bach] Piano Works 1908 – 1921 Andrea Padova, piano BUSONI: Fantasia after Bach • Preludio, Fuga e Fuga figurata • Fantasia nello stile antico, Op. 33b, No. 4 • Tre fogli d’album • J.S. BACH (arr. Busoni): Preludio, Fuga e Allegro • Fantasia, Adagio e Fuga • Fantasia, Fuga, Adagio e Scherzo

Busoni, one of the great pianists of all time, was also a considerable composer, and one of the most interesting figures in the history of music. Starting out as a “Late Romantic,” he took a turn towards the Baroque in 1908 and produced a series of piano transcriptions of Bach harpsichord pieces, as well as a number of keyboard works written “in the style of” Bach. The line between “original” and “transcribed” is sometimes blurred but always fascinating, as these brilliant recordings by Andrea Padova show. CD: STV 33657 (R) File Under: Classical

Salvatore SCIARRINO Breath ORDER DATE APRIL 22, 2005

This is the first installment in a trilogy of Stradivarius recordings devoted to Sciarrino, with the composer himself as artistic director and the graphic concepts of famous photographer Roberto Masotti. This first volume, Breath, is focused on chamber music for wind instruments. Sciarrino is perhaps the first composer who used sound as a living organism. His music begins at the very limits of the imperceptible, where physiology and silence emerge. Through Sciarrino we rediscover the spaces of nature, the daily noises and also the miracle of the human voice. CD: STV 33647 (R)

• Norrington’s earlier cycle of all the Beethoven symphonies for EMI was a major worldwide recording event. This new, complete cycle with a different orchestra has been praised even more highly by many critics • Specially priced box set – 6 CDs for the price of 4! • Includes a bonus disc of Sir Roger Norrington discussing (in German) the interpretation of Beethoven using historical performance practice but with a modern symphony orchestra • Norrington delivers drama, poetry and a potent new vision of Beethoven’s timeless masterworks • Norrington’s 1987 “Beethoven Experience” concerts in London coincided with the EMI release of his first Beethoven sympony recording (Nos. 2 and 8), which promptly won a Gramophone award. His complete Beethoven symphony cycle won the 1990 Deutscher Schallplattenpreis and had an international impact on Beethoven performance • “[These versions] immeasurably surpass the conductor’s 1980’s versions with the London Classical Players…” — ClassicsToday • “Simply put — a sensation!” — Rondo

2003 Grammy Award Nominee! Best Orchestral Performance

“Sylvain Cambreling’s acute familiarity with Debussy’s orchestral style makes for exceptionally translucent performances wherein manifold inner details emerge with unprecedented clarity, yet always within the context of the whole… Hänssler’s spacious and wide-ranging recording no doubt has a lot to do with the sheer sonic beauty of these performances…” — ClassicsToday (8/10 rating) Ursula Eisert, harp / SWR Symphony Orchestra, Baden-Baden / Sylvain Cambreling, conductor DEBUSSY: Images • Danses • La Mer

• Debussy’s music is pantheism translated into sound. He transformed water, clouds, fog, light, dusk, landscapes, the moon, wind, scents, seasons and gardens into melody and rhythm. In the process of seeking this ‘artistic truth,’ he managed to completely redefine the art of music • Master conductor Sylvain Cambreling is the ideal champion for these beloved scores, bringing an expansiveness and clarity seldom encountered in other recordings • Currently principal conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra, Baden-Baden and Freiburg, Sylvain Cambreling is one of today’s leading exponents of the French repertoire • Born in Amiens, France in 1948, Cambreling studied at the Paris Conservatory. He began his career as a trombonist but soon shifted to conducting • He has conducted orchestral repertoire with the Vienna, Berlin, Los Angeles, Oslo and Czech Philharmonics; the Cleveland Orchestra; The Montreal, Cincinnati and BBC Symphonies; the Dresden Staatskapelle, and many more

Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra/Heinz Holliger, conductor/Christine Simonin, Ondes Martenot KOECHLIN: Le Docteur Fabricius, Op. 202 • Vers la Voûte étoilée, Op. 129

• Charles Koechlin (1867 – 1950) was born in France and studied at the Paris Conservatory under Fauré, Massenet and others. His eclectic compositional style includes elements of modality, serialism and polytonality • Koechlin was an experimenter and a colorful character whose wide-ranging interests included Hollywood movies; one of his best-known works is the Epitaphe de Jean Harlow, written after the beloved platinum-blonde actress was killed in a plane crash • Koechlin became the teacher of Francis Poulenc and Germaine Tailleferre, and had a major influence on Darius Milhaud and other French composers associated with Erik Satie • Koechlin’s output included opera, ballet, chamber music, piano solos, songs and more, but this album explores two of his unjustly neglected orchestra works • Born in Switzerland, Heinz Holliger became the most famous classical oboist of the later 20th century, but recently he has expanded his activities to include major conducting engagements around the world. He worked as a violinist, tenor and conductor for a few years before resuming formal conducting studies under Sir Adrian Boult at the Royal College of Music • Norrington founded the Schütz Choir in 1962, beginning a decades-long exploration of historical performance practice. • Hänssler Classic is proud to present this tribute to one of the most important musical dynasties of the 20th century: the Kleibers • Both father and son were among the most highly esteemed musicians to step upon a podium, and here is an opportunity to experience on a single CD their similarities and differences, as each is heard conducting the same symphony – the father in 1947, the son in 1972 • Born in Vienna in 1890, Erich Kleiber decided to become a conductor when, as a boy, he heard Gustav Mahler conduct his own Symphony No. 6 • Erich Kleiber was considered one of the greatest interpreters of Mozart and Beethoven, and made a number of classic recordings which are still among the finest in the catalogues • His son Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004), incredibly, became perhaps even more famous than his father, who had advised him against taking up a musical career • Unlike his father, Carlos was shy about visiting the recording studio, and his relatively few recordings are all the more precious for being so great and rare at the same time

“A lot of people were surprised when this recording of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem – featuring the all-amateur Washington Chorus, the Shenandoah Conservatory Chorus, and the Maryland Boy Choir under the direction of Robert Shafer – won the Grammy for Best Choral Performance of 1999. They shouldn’t have been. From first note to last, it is a compelling realization of one of the greatest, most beautiful, and most challenging scores of modern times – a performance that does credit to all involved. Robert Shafer and his cohorts give a disciplined yet impassioned reading of the piece, one that is notable not only for the fine choral singing – blend, balance, and intonation are all exemplary – and the outstanding work of the vocal soloists, but for its felicitous detailing of the instrumental parts as well…In a very competitive field that includes the composer’s own account, this rendition of the War Requiem rightly takes a place in the front rank, deserving of the honor it has received.” — Amazon.com “Shafer’s tempos approximate Britten’s, with never a feeling of rushing or dragging, carefully observing the musical and emotional climaxes…this is a rapturous performance, a remarkable recording… one of the finest recordings of the work available.” — American Record Guide

• “If you ask me, I am neither good nor bad. You might say I waver between the two.” — Erik Satie • French composer Erik Satie (1866 –1925) has so far refused classification by later generations. The ambivalence of his writings, compositions and drawings has served to divide the camps of those who regard him as a dilettante amateur and those who see him as a forerunner of the important avant-garde movements of the 1920s • In Satie’s piano music, following medieval precedent, meter, division into bars and dynamics are absent. Modal chord blocks without leading tone provide a meditative sound-world in which Satie’s concept of ideal harmony can be realized • Pianist John White was born in Berlin and pursued studies at the Royal College of Music. He also studied privately with Elisabeth Lutyens, Humphrey Searle and Rosamund Ley (a student of Ferruccio Busoni) • White has taught composition at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the Yehudi Menuhin School and Leicester Polytechnic. Hans ROTT Symphony No. 1

INCLUDES WORLD PREMIERE RECORDING!

• The first recording of music by Hans Rott (1858 – 1884) caused a critical sensation. Here was strong, vivid, imaginative music written by a composer almost nobody had ever heard of, whose name was not even mentioned in the most comprehensive history of Viennese music, yet who had been the favorite pupil of Anton Bruckner, and had been praised by, and had even influenced, Gustav Mahler • Always nervous by nature, Rott at only 23 years of age began to exhibit erratic and even dangerous behavior. He once pulled a gun on a man lighting a cigar on a train, warning him that Brahms had filled the car with dynamite! After this incident, Rott was committed to an asylum, where he attempted suicide several times before dying of tuberculosis at 26 • Despite his youth and unstable mental condition, Rott wrote music that astounded both Bruckner and Mahler. The latter wrote of his Symphony in E: “We cannot comprehend what music has lost in him: his genius rises to such a flight even in this first symphony he wrote as a youth of 20 years of age and which – this is not saying too much – makes him the founder of the new symphony as I understand it”

Domenico CIMAROSA

• Domenico Cimarosa (1749 –1801) enjoyed great success as a keyboard virtuoso in the most fashionable Viennese salons. He was appointed Salieri’s successor as Kapellmeister to the Austrian court, and the Emperor’s commission for a new comic opera in 1792 resulted in Cimarosa’s most famous work, Il matrimonio segreto • Apart from the ever-popular opera and a Requiem which is still occasionally performed, most of Cimarosa’s music is unknown today. His instrumental music includes 88 keyboard sonatas, 32 of which are recorded here • The content of the sonatas transcends their standard Baroque form. Cimarosa lived a stormy and eventful life, which is probably why his piano sonatas are so infectiously emotional, arousing a lively response from the listener • Evgeny Soifertis was born in Kiev, where at the age of 13 he won first prize in the Beethoven competition. He later continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory before moving to Holland, though for the past few years he has made his home in London • Soifertis has concertized internationally and made numerous television appearances in Holland, Belgium, and in the BBC’s “Music Live” Festival

CLASSICAL NEW RELEASES FROM GRAND TIER! Opera d’Oro’s Grand Tier series presents the best-selling Opera d’Oro titles with libretto and deluxe new packaging at mid-price! The Opera d’Oro series has been an unqualified success in the budget category. Now, in response to popular demand, the best titles are being reissued with complete librettos in the original languages and fresh new English translations; stimulating essays on the operas by eminent writers on music; and striking artwork commissioned from Rafal Olbinski. “Corelli was born to sing this role…He is Chénier…[Tebaldi’s] singing combines feverish intensity with a meltingly beautiful tone…The Vienna Philharmonic plays magnificently under the leadership of Lovro von Matacic. It is a spectacular reading, which never loses its shape or urgency while allowing the singers to proceed seemingly unbridled.” — Opera News Franco Corelli, Renata Tebaldi, Ettore Bastianini, et al., vocal soloists /Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus of the Vienna State Opera /Lovro von Matacic, conductor GIORDANO: Andrea Chenier (complete opera)

• When Franco Corelli died last October in Milan at the age of 82, the world of opera lost one of its most colorful figures, and the most thrilling Italian tenor of his generation • With his powerful voice and movie-star looks, Corelli became an opera matinee idol from the 1950s until his retirement in 1976 • Corelli was beloved by audiences for the raw power of his singing and the delectable liberties he sometimes took with the music – for example, holding high Cs longer than written • Renata Tebaldi was the only serious rival to Maria Callas during her era, and is still revered as one of the most beautiful soprano voices of the past century • Tebaldi was noted for the rich, creamy sound of her naturally beautiful voice, and the total security of her breath control and technique. Her sound was seamless from the top register to the bottom • Live performance, Vienna, June 26, 1960

MOZART: Le nozze di Figaro (complete opera)

Tom Krause, Elizabeth Harwood, Mirella Freni, José Van Dam, Frederica von Stade, Jane Barbié, Michel Sénéchal, et al., vocal soloists / Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus of the Vienna State Opera / Herbert von Karajan, conductor

• Mozart’s greatest comic opera is seldom found at mid-price, at least not in a great performance! But here is one with one of the finest Mozart casts ever put together, with one of the greatest conductors at the peak of his powers • “Hearing Karajan’s work before the early-to-mid-‘80s…is invariably a treat, and this Figaro, live from Salzburg in 1974, is no exception. For the most part his tempos are fleet, with recitatives at honest conversational speed...José van Dam’s Figaro finds this always interesting singer at his vocal best… and he gives us a complete picture of this complicated man. Susanna is Mirella Freni, simply ideal – pert but not too pert, knowing, and vocally right on the money. Frederica von Stade rounds out the principals as Cherubino, and she sings with rich, warm tone and fine attention to detail.” — ClassicsToday • Live performance, Salzburg, 1974 MAY 2005

“ The performance is very convincing. The superb Evangelist (Christoph Prégardien) and Christus (Peter Kooy) make the most of Koopman’s recitatives, and Koopman directs an insightful, expressive and flexible interpretation.” — Uri Golomb , Goldbergweb.com “Koopman’s work as a conductor of early music has garnered him a wealth of awards, including two Edison Prizes, a 3M Prize, a Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, a French Grand Prix du Disque and Prix Hector Berlioz, Grammy nominations in both the U.S. and Britain, and the Silver Phonograph from the Dutch recording industry… though Koopman is best known for his massive projects recording the music of J.S. Bach; other projects have included the complete Bach organ works and Passions (including Koopman’s own fantastic reconstruction of the lost Markuspassion).” — All Music Guide “ Dutch musician Ton Koopman is a polymath in interpreting the music of J.S. Bach, not only as conductor but as harpsichordist and organist… his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir are among the leading authentic-instrument and choral ensembles performing today.” — Amazon.com

J.S. BACH: Markus Passion (1731)

• Several musicologists have tried to reconstruct or realize this lost masterpiece with less than convincing results; now Baroque performance expert Ton Koopman has done the job perhaps better than anyone before – certainly uniquely and provocatively • In Koopman’s own words: “Acting as though I were one of Bach’s pupils, I imagined myself being given the following assignment in a composition lesson: ‘Here’s a libretto; set it to music using whatever you find in the works I wrote up until now (1731). What you do not find, compose yourself’” • Koopman’s procedure involves using some of Bach’s own music from other religious works that fit the surviving libretto, plus connecting music he has written himself in Bach/Baroque style

• A live concert recorded in the church of San Simpliciano, Milan, Italy • NTSC all-region format with English subtitles • Multi-channel 5.1 live recording • J.S. Bach is known to have written a “Passion According to St. Mark” in addition to his St. Matthew and St. John Passions, but the score has long been lost. The work was first performed in 1731 but today, only the verbal text survives • The autograph score of this work was known to be in the possession of the Leipzig-published Britkopf in 1764. It is also known that a copy of the score made by Bach collector Franz Hauser was still in existence until 1945, when it was apparently destroyed in the Allied bombing of Dresden. Many still hold out the hope that there is another copy somewhere that will someday be discovered

“While not world music per se, Globe Trekker, the soundtrack to the TV series of the same name, is definitely global in its outlook. In some ways it seems as though the entire world is here – from the American South to Thailand, Canada and Madagascar – all filtered through an electronic prism. This is music made for the show, and in that light it does push the envelope a bit while keeping a strong, graceful integrity.” — Amazon.com “Blending music recorded on location all over the world with compositions recorded in the studio…the combination of a team of composers, who have worked with some of the biggest names in contemporary music, with the inspiration of street musicians, amateur players and other artists from the far flung corners of the world creates a wonderful cross-cultural musical mix.” — ABC.com

“How to introduce the excellent Jaune Toujours? Apart from a string of superlatives, the best way to describe Jaune Toujours is to say what they do: they live in and around Brussels and they write and sing songs in Flemish and French about life in and around Brussels. They do this with accordion played like most people play an electric guitar, exuberant brass and some utterly solid and intelligent double bass and percussion.”

Vendima grinds out tunes with melodramatically dark names like ‘Hasta Morir’ and ‘Oración’ that amble along with heavy bass, synth programming, and Exene-like, pedal-distorted vocals from lead vixen Brenda, who wears bilingual goth-influences on her sleeve, whether Mephisto Walz or Santa Sabina.” — Ben Ortiz

WORLD Throw Ethiopiques on your sound system, and you will know you are in uncharted waters. One minute you’ll swear you’re hearing James Brown speaking in tongues, the next you’ll think you’ve hit on the hottest new samples for a hip hop band from outer space. But this is music from Ethiopia’s golden years — with a budding following not too different from the ska rebirth fifteen years ago! “ With his haunting, serpentine voice, at the same time raucous and velvety, Mahmoud Ahmed has invented a world of uncertain borders, an improbable mix of Eastern-African rhythmic lines, mysterious laments with refined ornamentation and melodies of unexpected Indian modulation; all this streaked by electric sounds and pulsed by a hot, swaying groove spanning swing to funk and even foraying into reggae music. What an exhilarating shambles!” — Les Inrockuptibles “ I am really into Ethiopian pop music, which has a very individual character because the country was closed off for so many years. The Ethiopiques series has done a lot to make the riches of the music available, and I would recommend them to anyone with a passing interest in world music. Because of the circumstances in which they were recorded, when the monarchy was giving way to a new regime 25 or 30 years ago, the music really sounds as though something is bursting into life. It is very poignant, and very beautiful, too.” — Elvis Costello

• In the rich, varied and bizarre history of African music, the tragedy of the Ethiopian pop recording industry stands alone. Now, Buda Records brings us the Ethiopiques series, showcasing the immense scope of the golden age of Ethiopian music – lovingly assembled, remastered and fully annotated • The Ethiopiques series has received accolades from an endless list of magazines, newspapers and radio stations – and numbers Elvis Costello, John Zorn and Rocket From The Crypt among its fans! • Mahmoud Ahmed was, without a doubt, the artist who earned modern Ethiopian music a foothold in the Western record market. One of the most beloved singers in Ethiopia, veteran singer Ahmed is a true survivor who continued recording and performing through Ethiopia’s dark 1980s • Though Ahmed has never quite crossed over as an Afropop star, he remains hugely popular with Ethiopians around the world. This disc features his work from 1972 –1978 and, through his remarkable development, one can see the whole of Ethiopia both frolicking and struggling • These raw sounds were originally put out by Amha Records, founded in 1969 by 24-year-old Amha Eshèté in defiance of the Imperial decree requiring all music production to be overseen by the government-sanctioned national theater • The Ethiopiques series has received gushing accolades from NPR, Rolling Stone, New York Times, SF Weekly, All Music Guide, Exclaim, Village Voice, Austin Chronicle, Rootsworld and many more
