ALBERGATI: Il convito de Baldassarro [“Balthasar’s Banquet”] (complete oratorio) Relatively little is known of the Bolognese composer Pirro Capacelli Albergati (1663-1735) except for the contents of a folder in the State Archives marked “Honors received from Pirro Albergati by His Royal Majesty Leopold I.” These letters begin in 1687—about the time that the “most humble, devoted, and obliging” Albergati apparently entered imperial court service—and continue through 1719. Included among the last letters are the scores of two oratorios dedicated to the Emperor, one being Il convito de Baldassarro, which had been composed in 1691.

ROLLA: Viola Concertos in C, D & B flat Alessandro Rolla (1757-1841) debuted as a violist at the age of fifteen, performing a concerto of his own composition. After this brilliant debut, Rolla’s talents led to his obtaining particularly important positions such as the first viola of the Royal Orchestra of Parma beginning in May 1782. He produced a great number of violin concertos of high technical virtuosity, which spread his fame as a composer and virtuoso beyond the Alps. In 1802 he accepted the position of first violin and concertmaster of the orchestra at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, a post he would hold until 1833.

Ssitkim kut is the name used in Cholla Province to refer to shamanistic rites held for the spirits of the dead. Kim Daere, a shamaness from this region, and Park Byong-chon both hold positions as officially recognized exponents of this rite. Both belong to hereditary families of shamans.

Urtin duu means “long song,” due to the way in which the singer freely draws out each individual sound. The songs on this disc are products of the cultural heritage of the Halha people, one of the principal tribes residing in the Mongolian Republic. The main features of this style are the use of falsetto and ornamentation involving falling pitches.

Pansori is a form of musical recitation performed in open areas where people congregate. Celebrated singer Jung Jung Min studied the epic Simchongga—one of the five surviving stories of the pansori storytelling tradition—under Song Ch’ and-sun, and was awarded the President’s Prize in 1984.

The pygmies featured on this recording live in the northeastern part of the Ituri Forest, and are thought to be among the most untouched and primitive of the various pygmy tribes.
