Jay Geils and Gerry Beaudoin place themselves in a tradition of great guitarist meetings … a marvelous job. — POPMATTERS

Press Quotes “ Brings together three buddies from different areas of music who decided they wanted to record a jazz album. The result: a pleasant, imminently listenable mixture of swing, mainstream and blues.” — JAZZREVIEW “A cool, hip CD to put on in nearly any setting. Light and bouncy, this is an uplifting, feel-good album with hours of listening enjoyment contained therein … a great meeting of friends and comrades who include in their number a veteran blues-rock guitarist (Geils) … and a trained jazz guitarist (Beaudoin).” — RAMBLES

Featured Artists Gerry Beaudoin, guitar/Jay Geils, guitar/Aaron Weinstein, violin/Bob Nieske, bass/Less Harris, Jr., drums

Track Listing Desert Sands · In a Mellow Tone · Out of Nowhere · Blue Benedetto · Here’s That Rainy Day · Minor Swing · I Thought About You · Take the A Train · Sweet One · Flat Foot Floogie · Jackie’s Serenade · Sweet Georgia Brown · All Blues

Selling Points · Veteran guitarists Jay Geils and Gerry Beaudoin welcome young violin phenom Aaron Weinstein to a swinging recording session – an eclectic, easygoing set of Tin Pan Alley and swing-era classics, with a few original blues and a timeless bop blues update · Gerry Beaudoin is a Grammy-nominated guitarist who has carved a career out as leader & arranger for the Boston Jazz Ensemble. Winner of the 1992 Naird Award and 1994 Cadence Editors Choice Award, Beaudoin has played with Howard Alden, Frank Vignola, Jack Wilkens, and Andy Summers (of The Police) · Jay Geils is the iconic founder of the famous J. Geils Band, one of the most popular touring rock ‘n’ roll bands in America during the seventies. Where their contemporaries were influenced by the heavy boogie of British blues-rock and the ear-splitting sonic adventures of psychedelia, the J. Geils Band was a bar band pure and simple, churning out greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes, cutting them with a healthy dose of Stones swagger · Jay Geils and Gerry Beaudoin met at a guitar show in 1994. Geils became a frequent guest artist with the Gerry Beaudoin Trio in clubs and concerts across the country, and his affinity and skill in performing jazz standards left audiences amazed that a superstar blues rocker had such depth to his playing! · Gerry Beaudoin will be interviewed in Modern Guitar’s June 2006 issue · After excellent reviews in the Wall Street Journal & by the AP, Aaron Weinstein’s profile has jumped significantly · Promotion to Down Beat, JazzTimes, Jazziz, jazz critics and jazz radio

“ ” A talented young singer who is definitely on an upward curve … one of the better big-band-with-vocalist albums of the year. — ALL ABOUT JAZZ

Press Quotes “Singer Fay Claassen pays respect to the American popular song in a jazz context that is entirely her own. Fay is worth hearing because of the sincerity with which she handles lyrics. She can scat in a solid, rhythmic way and also has an attractive, breezy voice.” — DOWN BEAT “Although Claassen swings, she isn’t an aggressive or forceful sort of vocalist – her post-bop outlook is urbane, sophisticated, elegant, and refined.” — ALL MUSIC GUIDE “Fay Claassen has got a strong mezzo voice that can handle some of the most sinuous, difficult melodic lines I’ve ever heard. She improvises with élan and her interpretive ability is formidable. She is to singing what Audrey Hepburn was to the movies – elegant, effervescent, and always on a dangerously seductive yet graceful edge.” — CADENCE

Selling Points Wonderfully fresh, inventive, vibrant, accessible improvised music builds on and extends American jazz in the way Jack Kerouac and Ansel Adams advanced art in their own fields. Applauded as “contemporary in sound with [a] smart attitude” by Down Beat, “challenging and instantly likable” by JazzTimes, and “truly wonderful and important” by All About Jazz.

JAZZ “ The whole point of AlasNoAxis is less about broader technical displays and more about direct service to the song. On these relatively short compositions these players manage to navigate odd time signatures and a diversity of feels and textures that lean heavily towards the kinetic. This is music that demands attention and is best played loud.” — ALL ABOUT JAZZ

Manikasanti Bronze Blossoms

· The incredibly rich gamelan tradition of Bali continues into the twenty-first century with Manikasanti! · The name of the group derives from the name of the gamelan that they use: Manik means “jewel” and Santi means “peace.” Manikasanti’s leader, I Wayan Sinti, was born in 1943 in Dauh Kutuh and is a music teacher at a specialty school. His career has spanned nearly forty years, and he is well known as a vocal music specialist with a strong background in old gamelan music. He received an M.A. from the University of California – San Diego in 1981. He is very energetic in his activities as a composer, and has provided a great number of pieces for the annual gamelan music contest · Most Balinese gamelan groups are traditional village groups with amateur musicians from each village forming around that village’s traditional instrument, but I Wayan Sinti, the leader of Manikasanti, has instead scouted the most talented players from across the island and formed a new diverse group of members who simply love to perform the music ... this is the new face of Balinese gamelan!

“One of the most brilliant and inquisitive artists of the new generation.” — NEW YORK TIMES

Christian Tetzlaff, violin/Tonhalle Orchestra, Zurich/David Zinman, conductor BEETHOVEN: Violin Concerto in D, Op. 61 • Romance for Violin & Orchestra in G, Op. 40 • Romance for Violin & Orchestra in F, Op. 50

• As is generally known, Beethoven later transcribed his violin concerto as a piano concerto, for which he wrote some additional solo cadenzas. Christian Tetzlaff has in turn transcribed these original piano cadenzas for the violin • According to Tetzlaff, the cadenzas by Fritz Kreisler that are usually heard are “alien – in purely harmonic terms, but also in terms of the concept and the idea behind them. Beethoven pursues an entirely different approach in his original piano cadenzas” • Just as at home with the classical and romantic repertoire as with the music of the twentieth century, Tetzlaff ’s interpretations of the great violin concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Berg, Schoenberg, Shostakovich and Ligeti set new standards, as do his performances of the Bach’s solo sonatas and partitas • Voted the 2005 Instrumentalist of the Year by Musical America • Tetzlaff regularly gives guest performances as a soloist and chamber musician in all the international musical centers, such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Vienna’s Musikverein as well as in London, Paris, Berlin, and Munich. He also regularly gives duo recitals with Leif Ove Andsnes and Lars Vogt, and has his own string quartet • In the summer of 2005, Christian Tetzlaff performed four concert programs as “artiste étoile” at the Lucerne Festival and was invited to play at the London “Proms” as well as festivals in Edinburgh and Helsinki • He has been awarded several prizes for his numerous CD recordings, including two Diapason d’Ors, the Edison Prize, the Echo Prize, and nominations for the Grammy Awards • Born in New York in 1936, conductor David Zinman initially trained at the Oberlin Conservatory and then at the University of Minnesota. While studying conducting at the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Center, he attracted the attention of Pierre Monteux, who arranged for his first important performances with the London Symphony Orchestra and at the Holland Festival, to name but a few • David Zinman has risen to the pinnacle of his career in the last decade. After bringing the Baltimore Symphony to major status, he became musical director of the Aspen Music Festival and then took the helm of Zurich’s beloved Tonhalle Orchestra, with which he has undertaken highly successful tours of Europe, the U.S. and Asia • Zinman’s discography, which includes over 100 recordings, has won five Grammys and two Grands Prix du Disque • Zinman’s complete Beethoven symphony set with this same orchestra received the Award of the German Record Critics in 1999 and has since gone from one rave review to another

CARDOSO: Sitivit anima mea • Tulerunt lapides • Non mortui • Missa Regina caeli • LÔBO: Audivi vocem de caelo • Pater peccavi • Missa pro defunctis

The long-established tradition of devotion to the Virgin Mary resulted in some superb settings from Spanish composers. Supreme amongst them, Victoria set some of his finest music to Marian texts. This recording showcases works for eight parts, some of them for two antiphonal choirs discreetly accompanied by organ and bajón, all displaying the magnificent fervent sonorities for which he is famous. “You could say it was music that Harry Christophers was born to conduct.” — BBC RADIO 3

Mass for Double Choir

Eton Choirbook I: The Rose and the Ostrich Feather

“A marvellous demonstration of Martin’s gifts as a composer of vocal music.” — BBC MUSIC The Sixteen/Harry Christophers, conductor MARTIN: Mass for Double Choir • Cantate pour le 1er Août • Chansons • Songs of Ariel • Ode to Music

Frank Martin was arguably Switzerland’s greatest composer. His shimmering Mass for Double Choir, completed in 1926 as “an affair between God and himself,” is one of the finest settings of the twentieth century, yet it had to wait forty-one years to be shared with others in its first performance. This collection of his choral music also includes his cantata for Switzerland’s national day (August 1), and the Ode to Music, along with some charming part-songs. Eclectic and technically superb, these pieces display a style that is serenely individual.

26

Manuel Cardoso (1566 –1650) and Duarte Lôbo (c. 1565 –1646) were the two leading composers of the “golden age” of Portuguese polyphony. Portuguese sacred music of this period inhabits a distinctive sound world that can be seen as a continuation and development of the Spanish style of composers such as Morales and Guerrero, but it is often allied to a tantalizing harmonic richness and color that is found nowhere else.

Scholarship, musicianship and superb singing have made this disc a Gramophone Award winner! The Rose and the Ostrich Feather is the first release in the award-winning Eton Choirbook series on Coro, encapsulating some of the finest sacred music of the English fifteenth century having survived Henry VIII’s ransacking of the monasteries. Rarely has such a series been as highly praised for its musicological research, performance and recorded sound.

• Most critics consider Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) the most eminent English composer of the twentieth century. His works include masterpieces of choral, operatic, orchestral and chamber music • The works on this album show some of the breadth and range of Britten’s choral writing, embracing the masque from his opera Gloriana, his own take on the English part song tradition in Five Flower Songs, and his last work for unaccompanied voices, Sacred and Profane. The latter sets medieval texts described herein as “a mixture of the devotional and the rumbustiously secular” • The Sixteen is one of the jewels in the musical crown of Britain, and enjoys a worldwide reputation for clarity and beauty with precision and dramatic intensity • Founded in 1977 by its director, Harry Christophers, its albums have received nearly every major prize of the recording industry including the prestigious Gramophone Award for Early Music • The Sixteen’s own record label, CORO, offers new recordings each year and is re-issuing the former Collins Classics catalogue

J.S. BACH Mass in B minor (2 CDs)

• Bach’s Mass in B minor displays all the ingredients that contribute to his supreme ranking amongst his peers of any age, and also demonstrates the breadth of compositional skills amassed during his lifetime • It demands choral singing of blistering athleticism but also sensitive, responsive and, at times, majestic orchestral playing coupled with virtuosic obligatos, along with a team of soloists who can breathe an immediacy of expression into the words of the Mass • All these elements are well to the fore in this magnificent recording • The Sixteen’s special reputation for early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance and a diversity of twentieth century music is founded on a naturalness of performance, a revealing clarity and beauty of sound, precision, and a dramatic intensity of delivery • To date, The Sixteen and The Symphony of Harmony and Invention have made over 90 recordings, many award-winning, in a range of work spanning the music of 600 years, rediscovering and performing lost and little-known repertoire • The Sixteen’s own record label, CORO, offers new recordings each year and is re-issuing the former Collins Classics catalogue

“Forgotten music by great composers, great music by forgotten composers.” – ROBERT REILLY, CRISIS This is the mission of Toccata Classics – a label created expressly to explore unjustly neglected repertoire. Toccata Classics is the first label to tackle forgotten repertoire head on, recording only the music that has not yet gained the audience it deserves. Incredibly, only one of Reicha’s 40+ string quartets is on CD; there are hundreds of Lassus motets that have yet to be recorded, and around 40 of Palestrina’s masses. The music of Nordic and Baltic composers is inadequately represented, as is the work of non-operatic Italian composers such as Pizzetti and Ghedini. The collapse of Communism has opened up dozens of countries whose rich musical traditions are as good as unknown. South American composers have yet to make the impact of their North American colleagues. These are only some of the treasure troves that Toccata Classics will be exploring!

Born in 1894, Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff was a prodigy whose life was cut tragically short. He died in 1942 in the Nazi concentration camp at Wülzburg (Bavaria). The importance of his often grotesque and dance-oriented music in our time is being more and more recognized. The “ballet mystery” Ogelala, premiered in 1925, is based on the legend of a Mexican Indian chief. The sober Symphony No. 2 was written for Czech radio in 1932. The Suite is an earlier work. These three works were performed in May 1993 at the SR-Festival “Music of the Twentieth Century” in Saarbrücken. On this occasion, the Symphony No. 2 received its German premiere. The Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1937. Myung-Whun Chung, the principal conductor from 1984–90, was followed by Marcello Viotti, who is also well known particularly as an opera conductor and works with many of the major orchestras. Oliver von Dohnanyi was for seven years Director of the Bratislava Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since the opening up of the East, Dohnanyi has appeared more frequently in the West.

Orchestral Works “George Enescu” Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra/Cristian Mandeal, conductor ENESCU: Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A, Op. 11 • Suite No. 2 in C, Op. 20 • Suite No. 3 in D, Op. 27 “Villageoise”

George Enescu (1881–1955) is still remembered today, fifty years after his death, as Romania’s greatest classical composer. He was also a virtuoso violinist. His many works in numerous genres remain largely unknown outside his native land except for the immensely popular Romanian Rhapsodies, but they deserve wider circulation in view of the beauty of their melodies, their brilliant orchestrations, and their strong characterization and originality. This recording offers two of Enescu’s orchestral suites in addition to the beloved Rhapsody No. 1. Dancing vivacity and colorful instrumentation are characteristics of these effervescent orchestra pieces. The Romanian Philharmonic Society was founded in 1868. Its conductors have included significant figures in Romanian music not to mention Enescu himself, whose name the orchestra incorporated into its title in 1955 as the George Enescu Bucharest Philharmonic. The current conductor is Cristian Mandeal, who studied with both Karajan and Celibidache. He has conducted numerous major orchestras and more than forty world premieres.

Joseph RHEINBERGER Music for Violin & Organ Elena Denisova, violin/Szygmunt Strzep, organ RHEINBERGER: Six Pieces for Violin & Organ, Op. 150 • Suite for Violin & Organ, Op. 166

The name of Joseph Rheinberger (1839–1901) is well known to all classical organists, but outside of that his fame drops off sharply. Music trivia addicts love to point him out as “the greatest composer of Liechtenstein” – which he was. More importantly, he was one of the most revered music pedagogues of his time (Furtwängler and Humperdinck were among his pupils). His own music was highly acknowledged by his contemporaries, and this disc represents a real rediscovery of some rarely performed works. Elena Denisova counts among the most prominent personalities of the Russian violin elite today. The press and public confirm her high musical maturity, absolutely individual interpretation, and a superior virtuosity. Szygmunt W. Strzep, who was born in 1962, is representative of the young Polish generation of organists.

These central works of cello literature are interpreted here by a master – Kyrill Rodin was awarded not only First Prize, but also Gold Medal, at the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Since then, Rodin has been one of the most sought-after soloists in Russia, the former Soviet states, and many other European countries. The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by Igor Oistrakh, Yuri Temirkanov and a union of concert workers. Many famous conductors have worked with the orchestra, including Svetlanov, Rozhdestvensky, Kondrashin, Kitaenko and Fedoseyev. They have made over 100 CDs. In 1959, soon after the completion of the Symphony No. 11, Shostakovich wrote his Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major Op. 107; he dedicated it to Mstislav Rostropovich, who premiered the work. The Cello Concerto No. 2 in G major Op. 126 is also dedicated to Rostropovich. The composer created it in 1966 between two vocal soloist/choral symphonies while seeking rejuvenation in a sanatorium in Yalta.

Carl CZERNY Symphonies 2 & 6 SWR Radio Orchestra, Kaiserslauten/Grzegorz Nowak, conductor CZERNY: Grande Symphony No. 2, Op. 781 • Symphony No. 6 in G minor (premiere)

Despite his amazingly prolific output, Czerny evidently did not aim to be original at all. He produced music going back and forth stylistically between Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and other contemporaries with amazing flexibility. It is this very flexibility that gives these two symphonies their unique charm and justifies rescuing Czerny’s concert music for the long neglect it has suffered for so many years.

In London, where she completed a course of guitar study, she devoted her time mostly to the tradition of European music. Back in Mexico City, she continued her studies under music pedagogue Jesús Estrada and Mario Lavista, the most eminent living Mexican composer. With the exception of one cast member, this is a re-creation of the premiere of her newest opera, which took place in Fall 2004 at the sixth annual International Music and Scenic Festival in Mexico City. It literally overflows with delightful melody, rhythmic verve, and sparkling humor • The most famous numbers in the score are Isabella’s spectacular coloratura aria “Cruda sorte,” and the thunderingly farcical final ensemble of the first act, which never fails to bring down the house • This live 1975 performance from Italy’s greatest opera house stars American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, whom Opera News called “probably the greatest singer in the world” in 1981. Across her forty-year career she was recognized as the greatest Rossini interpreter in modern times • Luigi Alva (b. 1927) was the leading lyric tenor of the fifties and sixties, admired for the purity of his tone, elegance of phrasing, and clarity of diction. • Samson et Dalila, based on the colorful Bible story, has remained a reliable crowd pleaser since its premiere in 1877, and admiration for its considerable qualities has grown steadily over the years. For one thing, Dalila has no fewer than three major arias, each more enchanting than the one before – a circumstance virtually unique in Romantic opera • This live 1964 broadcast from Amsterdam presents an exciting performance with two outstanding leads, one who was universally famous, and one who should have been • Born in Canada in 1926 as the sixth of eight children, Jon Vickers was intent on a business career until, at age twenty-two, the exceptional qualities of his voice were so evident that he enrolled in the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto • He was invited to join the Covent Garden Opera in London in 1957 and soon embarked upon a major international career. Beginning in 1960, he sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for more than twenty-five years • The role of Dalila is sung here by the Mexican mezzo-soprano Oralia Dominguez, a passionate singer who was the equal of Maria Callas in fiery temperament and sang opposite her in a famous Aida recording • Nearly everyone today agrees that Dominguez should have become a major international star. One of Rossini’s least-known operas, Zelmira nevertheless contains much excellent music, sometimes rising to the very best Rossini has to offer. Despite a weak libretto, Zelmira was well received at its premiere in 1822 and continued to be performed for about ten years. Then it was forgotten until the historic revival of 1965, preserved on this live recording that presents all the music including additions Rossini created for the Vienna premiere. The heroine is sung by Romanian–Italian soprano Virginia Zeani (b. 1925), a singer of superb technique who participated in the revivals of many bel canto operas. She was highly praised by critics for the radiant beauty and deep expressivity of her voice. Her husband was the well-known operatic bass Nicola Rossi-Lemeni.

He came along at the end of Verdi’s career and the beginning of Puccini’s, dying of tuberculosis at the early age of thirty-nine. La Wally, his most successful opera, had its first performance in 1892 at La Scala, Milan, under the direction of Arturo Toscanini, who championed the opera throughout his career. This performance features the legendary dramatic soprano Magda Olivero, who caused a sensation by singing beautifully even at an advanced age (she made her Met Opera debut at age 65, and her last opera recording at age 83). She was a “mere” 62 when this remarkable live recording was made in 1972.
