“A threesome that clicks like clockwork, a confluence of measured harmonies, a pleasant, not-so-sweet blend of meshed byways. Alternatively romantic and uplifting, Harrison conjured images of smoke-filled rooms and dim lights. While his conception is embedded in the past, he paints his personality on every phrase. Harrison may be your mother’s jazz pianist, but his is a class act, a homage to the past with crystal clear sound, a refined style, and a good choice of tunes. GLENN MILLER/COUNT BASIE/ CAB CALLOWAY Big Band Swing
In the ‘40s, swing was the thing, and jump jivin’ cats and kittens were lindy hopping in every ballroom and dancehall in the land. The big bands, such as Benny Goodman, The Dorseys, Glenn Miller and a host of others, were riding high. Loyal and enthusiastic fans followed all the doings of their favorite bands. For a while, other types of music replaced these great bands in popularity, but with the new millennium, a new generation has re-discovered big band swing. And soft, romantic ballads are also again in vogue, with partners holding each other close and dancing a slow foxtrot to some dreamy music. It’s indeed a great time to be young – and in love!

“The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday changed the art of American pop vocals forever. Almost fifty years after her death, it’s difficult to believe that prior to her emergence, jazz and pop singers were tied to the Tin Pan Alley tradition and rarely personalized their songs; only blues singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey actually gave the impression they had lived through what they were singing. Billie Holiday’s highly stylized reading of this blues tradition revolutionized traditional pop, ripping the decades-long tradition of song plugging in two by refusing to compromise her artistry for either the song or the band. She made clear her debts to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, but in truth her style was virtually her own, quite a shock in an age of interchangeable crooners and band singers.” — All Music Guide

The Funky Drum Jams
The Electro Jams
Continuing Ol’ Skool Flava’s exploration of the history of hip-hop rhythm, Funky Drum Jams focuses on the pre-synthesizer old school days when live funky drums were laying down the beat. This CD is a “who’s who” of the players that would shape hip-hop in the ‘80s, with performances by Afrika Bambaataa, Love Bug Star-Ski and the Harlem World Crew featuring Andre “Dr. Jekyll” Harrell, plus a number of tracks featuring the production of the legendary Pumpkin.
Ol’ Skool Flava continues its ongoing exploration of the history of hip-hop rhythm with The Electro Jams, focusing on that unique period in the early ‘80s when synthesizers reigned supreme and Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” heralded the era of electro in hip-hop. The Electro Jams presents music cut from the same cloth, with productions by Barry Michael Cooper (who went on to write the screen play for New Jack City) as well as mixes by Afrika Bambaataa and Russell Simmons.

• The assistant principal trombone of the Utah Symphony presents a heart-warming, accessible program of his father’s ‘authentic’ Albanian folk melodies — showcasing his virtuoso trombone playing • Much of the music on this disc is based on Albanian folk melodies or ideas. The melodies are largely original, but some the composer learned from his father, and some are songs that James Nova’s late mother sang in church choir in Istanbul, set to original settings with the trombone as storyteller • The elder (composer) Nova was musically trained in a conservatory in Trossingen, Germany, where he studied the classical accordion and composition. He was also involved with masterclasses with Paul Hindemith, who visited the school to teach • The pieces are very difficult technically and cover a wide range (at one point, five octaves!) but are very melodically pleasing, listenable and soulful • Aggressive media mailout to classical press including Gramophone and American Record Guide. Mailing to 100+ classical music stations across the country. Focused mailing to individual instrument journals and internet sites. Advertising in American Record Guide and instrument journals

Francesco di Lernia is considered one of the most representative performers of the panorama of Italian organ music. He has toured Europe, Asia and the U.S. and recorded numerous albums on several labels. Since 1995, he has been professor of organ and composition at the Lorenzo Perosi Conservatory in Italy. On this CD he plays two historic organs built in 1532 and 1792, respectively. Full specifications included in illustrated booklet.

Giovanni Simone Mayr (1763 –1845) lived most of his life in Italy and is considered an Italian composer, although he was born in Germany as Johan Simon Mayr. He is best known today as the teacher of Donizetti, but he was a famous opera composer in his own right, greatly admired by Rossini. His instrumental music, seldom heard today, is in the style of the Classical period, showing the influence of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

Adriano BANCHIERI
Cappella Artemisia
The Virtuoso
My Sister, My Bride: The Song of Songs in the Convents
Ensemble Hypothesis/Leopoldo d’Agostino, director BANCHIERI: 36 selections of vocal and instrumental music
Adriano Banchieri (1568 –1634) was a skillful composer, a refined man of letters, a religious spirit and a connoisseur of human foibles who enjoyed casting an ironic eye on the culture and society of his time. His musical writing, often humorous and playful, veers between old and new styles. He referred to many of his works as “crickety caprices” and they have remained among the most popular pieces by any composer of his era.

Cappella Artemisia/Candace Smith, director 20 selections of settings from The Song of Songs in the Bible, by various composers including Raphaella Alcotti, the first nun to have published any music
A Venetian decree of 1633 stated that The Song of Songs, although part of the Holy Scripture, “is completely prohibited in music” due to the fear that its frankly sensuous imagery might be misunderstood. Nevertheless, this beautiful love poetry was set to music by numerous composers, including several nuns in convents where the texts were frequently sung with particular enthusiasm.

J.S. BACH The French Suites (2 CDs) Bernard Roberts, piano
NEW RELEASE!
J.S. BACH: French Suites Nos. 1-6, BWV 812-817
In addition to his recital work, Bernard Roberts often appears as concerto soloist with leading orchestras in Britain and abroad. He is well known to Radio 3 listeners and was the subject of a 40-minute television documentary made for BBC2 by director Mischa Scorer. He sets aside time each year for chamber music, and particularly enjoys performing the piano trio repertoire with his sons Andrew and Nicholas. Of his Nimbus recording of the complete Beethoven sonatas, The Guardian wrote: “This is by far the best-recorded cycle of Beethoven sonatas issued or in the process of issue on CD. This is not for the collector looking for a neat package, but for the Beethovenian wanting to enjoy a satisfying recital.” Here, Roberts presents Bach’s complete French Suites on two CDs.

This recording, rated with three stars by the Penguin Guide, is one of the finest piano versions of Bach’s keyboard magnum opus ever made. Bernard Roberts’s playing is admired for its successful marriage of the modern piano with Early Music scholarship. His performances are praised for their honesty and freedom from eccentricity. Previously Roberts had famously recorded the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven direct-to-disc for Nimbus. This four-CD set, specially priced, offers 4 hours and 17 minutes of the greatest Baroque keyboard music ever written, made available again by popular demand after being absent from the catalogue for several years.

J.S. BACH Complete Partitas (2 CDs) Bernard Roberts, piano
The second installment in this reissue series offers a 2-CD set of the complete solo keyboard partitas of Bach. The total playing time is 2 hours and 24 minutes. Roberts’ international career takes him throughout Europe, American and the Far East and he has given master classes at many leading festivals including the Van Cliburn Piano Institute in Texas. In his accompanying note to NIM 5608, Wilfrid Mellers writes: “Today, a few pianists of exceptional intelligence and imagination — among whom I’d place Bernard Roberts — don’t need to be maverick geniuses like Landowska, Tureck and Gould in order to apply to the playing of Bach the historical insights ‘modern scholarship’ has brought to the music.”

Violin Sonatas
Balthasar Neumann Ensemble/Thomas Hengelbrock, conductor
Nachum Ehrlich, violin/Siegfried Mauser, piano
J.S. BACH: Cantata, “Christ lag in Todesbanden” BWV 4 • Kyrie in C minor, BWV Anh. 26 including Christe in G minor, BWV 242, after Francesco Durante • PACHELBEL: Cantata, “Christ lag in Todesbanden” • KERLL: Missa Superba
REGER: Violin Sonata in E minor, Op. 122 • Violin Sonata in C minor, Op. 139
An exciting program of the music Father Bach himself performed, and which often provided his musical inspiration, including a side-by-side comparison of his own famous Cantata for Easter Sunday, “Christ Lay in the Bonds of Death,” and the much less familiar cantata on the same text by Johann Pachelbel, composer of the famous Canon in D.
A unique recital of two of Reger’s rarely performed chamber music masterworks by uniquely qualified artists. Violinist Nachum Ehrlich has been active in chamber music performance since his days as a student, and has completed master classes with both Nathan Milstein and Henryk Szeryng. He now specializes in the music of Max Reger. Pianist Siegfried Mauser is well known to German audiences and is extremely active in the celebrated music festivals in Frankfurt, Salzburg and Munich.

Luigi DALLAPICCOLA Orchestral Music Jean-Guihen Queyras, cello/RAI Symphony Orchestra/Pascal Rophé, conductor DALLAPICCOLA: Due Pezzi (1947) • Variazioni (1954) • Dialoghi for cello & orchestra (1960) • Three questions with two answers (1963)
One might define this particular discographic edition as “American,” since it combines the most important symphonic works of Dallapiccola’s mature years, all fruit of the vast and extremely intense relationship the composer enjoyed with the U.S. from the 1950s until his death in 1975. As a pioneer of dodecaphony, Dallapiccola had suffered mockery and incomprehension in Italy from the mid-1930s onward, but he found acceptance and admiration in America. Although he used the 12-tone system, Dallapiccola insisted on infusing his music with a deep humanism and spirituality. CD: STV 33698 (R) File Under: Classical

Gianfrancesco MALIPIERO Chamber Music Aldo Orvieto & Marco Rapetti, pianists/Lucia Sciannimanico, mezzo-soprano/ Andrea Vio, violin/Teodora Campagnaro, cello MALIPIERO: Sonata a tre for violin, cello & piano • Dialogo I (con Manuel de Falla) for 2 pianos • Dialog II between 2 pianos • Dialogo III (con Jacopone da Todi) for voice & 2 pianos • Sonatina for cello & piano • Parafrasi for solo violin • Il canto della lontananza for violin & piano • Armenia for violin & piano
Gianfrancesco Malipiero (1882 –1973) was one of the leading Italian composers of the 20th century — and one of the first to break away from 19th-century operatic tradition and develop a style of his own that was modern but not in thrall to any theories or schools of his era, although he was influenced by French Impressionism. This CD displays the evolution of his chamber music from 1918 to 1962. CD: STV 33557 (R) File Under: Classical

Francesco Maria VERACINI Corelli’s Op. 5, Vol. 1 Federico Guglielmo, violin/Andrea Coen, harpsichord ORDER DATE JUNE, 24 2005
VERACINI: Dissertazioni sopra l’Opera V del Corelli, Vol. 1
This CD contains the first six of 12 sonatas by Arcangelo Corelli as transcribed, or more properly, rewritten, by Corelli’s famous compatriot Veracini. These have been preserved in an 84-page manuscript now in a museum in Bologna. No explanation exists as to why Veracini, a famous violinist, needed to rewrite a collection by another famous composer (a collection which was already well known and regarded as the last word in violin music), but the result is fascinating and obviously highly respectful. In scope and concept it is almost unique, even in a period when transcriptions and outright “unattributed borrowings” were common. The artists presented here have three other successful Stradivarius recordings to their credit. CD: STV 33709 (R) File Under: Classical

FANTASTIC REVIEWS FOR ALLEGRO CLASSICAL CDs!
“Once upon a time, such a highly enjoyable program of first recordings of American works performed by the commissioning orchestra would have been proudly released by Nonesuch, or, in their more daring moments, EMI or RCA. Instead, it has fallen into the hands of Summit records, who deserve our congratulations.” — Gramophone, May 2005
“The performances of all of them are wonderful. Every one of the miniatures is precisely balanced with every keyboard colour exactly caught by the recording, and Hodges is fiercely incisive and coruscating when required…an easy virtuosity that belies the sheer technical difficulties of all the pieces, while still finding an individual expressive space for each gesture.” — BBC Music, March 2005 [★★★★★]
“The work is boldly comprehensive, an epic survey of forms, styles, songs and dances… Skalkottas crafts wonderfully blurred accounts of each genre, as if the world is slightly distorted…the cycle is riddled with almost unplayable passages, but Idith Meshulam is more than up to the Herculean task.” — Gramophone, March 2005

“Generally speaking, Davies and the orchestra perform this first version of the Fourth Symphony with such understanding, warmth and authority that it makes most other versions I’ve heard sound like tentative read-throughs… no one makes quite such a convincing case for the original Bruckner Four.” — BBC Music, March 2005
“Lin’s talent for creating enterprising programs is matched by intelligent musicianship, a technique that can handle anything, and a big, generous tone… The excellent annotations and engineering further seal my highest recommendation” —ClassicsToday [10/10 rating!]

“This rewarding coupling of Dutilleux’s violin concerto L’arbre des songes with Mystère de l’instant highlights many resonances… The Bordeaux Aquitaine orchestra [plays with] forthright passion, moulded by Hans Graf to the ebb and flow of the score’s undulating textures… An equally stirring first recording of the orchestra version of La geôle is the icing on the cake of a most welcome disc.” — BBC Music, April 2005 [★★★★★]

N E W LA B E L ! “Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging ‘50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues and (in the ‘60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th-century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday.” — All Music Guide Tr ac k L i st i n g Riding Thumb • Busted • Georgia On My Mind • Oh, What A Beautiful Morning • Some Enchanted Evening • Hit The Road Jack • I Can’t Stop Loving You • Take These Chains From My Heart • I Can See Clearly Now • What’d I Say • America The Beautiful

GEORGE PORTER’S JOY RIDE
• Tuff City Records (via Night Train) sustains its tradition of reissuing New Orleans music in time for JazzFest! Preeminent this year is Searching for a Joy Ride, an unreleased 1980’s album by Joy Ride, the supergroup led by The Meters’ legendary bassist George Porter, Jr. In 1979, fresh from the success of The Meters’ worldwide tour with the Rolling Stones, Porter set out to form a group that would retain The Meters’ funkiness, yet cut across a greater swath of styles • Featuring keyboards by Sam Henry, the leader of Sam and the Soul Machine, and drums by Ricky Sebastian, who has gone on to be renowned in jazz festivals, Joy Ride perfectly splits the difference between rock and funk and is a must for any fan of The Meters! • Called “irrepressibly infectious” by JazzTimes and “percolating” by Billboard, Porter is one of the leading bass players in funk music! • Previously unreleased New Orleans funk rock from 1980

• This album is the result of an unlikely and unexpected encounter – between two cultures (Cameroonian and Cuban), between artists from those cultures, and between human beings: Ray Guerrero, Chino, Jorge and Patrick Noah • The aim of this album is to explore the different types of music that are derived from African music in order to enable listeners to gain a better understanding of the heritage bequeathed by our ancestors • Includes a natural blending of the bikutsi of Cameroon, the rumba of Congo and Bantu rhythms with Afro-Cuban rhythms, guaira, merengue, rumba, Latin jazz and the traditional son of Cuba • Represents the encounter between two African heritages: that of Cuba and that of Africa itself. It was motivated by feelings of love and fraternity, made with generosity, humanity, and a desire to share all the richness of Africa

ORSON WELLES
• Two radio plays – The 39 Steps and Sherlock Holmes – based on the writings of John Buchan and Arthur Conan Doyle, respectively, with the leading role in each play performed by Orson Welles in the CBS studios, New York, 1938 • Orson Welles’ and the Mercury Theater’s production of The 39 Steps emphasize the closed-in, claustrophobic and Kafka-esque nature of the novel’s plot: a solitary individual caught up in a German spy ring that he must learn to deal with in order to expose it • While the plot of the radio play version of Sherlock Holmes is original, it is loosely built on the plots of several of Doyle’s well-known short stories and is based on the actor William Gillette’s stage version of Doyle’s famous writings • KEY MARKETS: New York, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, Austin, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Atlanta
