A milestone achievement in the great career of Fred Anderson, one of the stalwarts of the tenor sax, features William Parker on bass & nagaswaram and Hamid Drake on drums. “Anderson shares with Von Freeman a knack for sounding absolutely contemporary & completely steeped in tradition.” — PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ
Recorded in 1973 at New York’s famous Town Hall, this eclectic celebration of the Comet Kohoutek featured a fire-eater, talking drums, and Sun Ra’s Arkestra. “A major innovator … experimenting with primitive electric keyboards and playing free long before the avant-garde got established.” — ALL MUSIC GUIDE
Engineer David Hancock chose Judson Hall for its acoustics, and one afternoon in September 1965, this private session was recorded at 30 IPS to achieve the highest possible fidelity. “Proof that there was an underlying logic even to Ayler’s most extreme moments … a tremendously inspiring recording.” — ALL MUSIC GUIDE
With outstanding contributions from jazz legends Sonny Fortune, Phil Ranelin, Doug Carn, and Babatunde, guitarist Calvin Keys’ new album draws upon their collective roots to create an authentic and inspiring recording. “Calvin Keys’s … playing is so deep in the pocket, it comes off elegant and effortless.” — MERCURY NEWS

Selling Points In the early nineties, hip-hop was an all-expansive medium whose most popular exponent was PM Dawn, with a range of samples that stood hip-hop’s ghetto-ism on its head. This kind of artistry was also characteristic of Anttex, whose recordings were a precious example of hip-hop’s new romanticism. Now, Tuff City makes a limited number of original pressings of this classic album available!

The intermingling of New Orleans music past & present is exemplified in this Tuf America release, a supplement to the Soul Rebels’ No More Parades album, which earned the 1998 Offbeat Award for Best Brass Band Album. Described as “the missing link between Louis Armstrong & Public Enemy,” by the Village Voice, this version features radical remixes plus new jams, all of which are PG-rated.

The whole audience sat silent and attentive, transfixed by Virgil’s dynamic and musical approach to the transcendent counterpoint of Johann Sebastian Bach … these ‘Bach Gamut’ concerts were tours de force, and I marvelled at Virgil’s stamina and prodigious technique. — RICHARD TORRENCE AND MARSHALL YAEGER, VIRGIL FOX: THE DISH
“He tossed off one after another of the monumental preludes, toccatas, fantasies and fugues with comparative ease, permeating them all with pure joy. The audience erupted with spontaneous praise after each of the mighty blockbusters” — TED ALAN WORTH, VIRGIL FOX: THE DISH

This legendary performance’s first release ever! A household name among organ fans, Virgil Fox (1912–1980) was one of the most beloved organists of the twentieth century Fox made more than sixty best-selling albums over the years on Columbia, RCA Victor, Command, and other labels This original release, engineered by Reference Recordings’ own Keith O. Johnson, is from a live recording of a landmark sold-out San Francisco concert in 1976, in which Fox performs on the grand Ruffatti pipe organ in St. Mary’s Cathedral. This is not a reissue! A thrilling program of Bach blockbusters for the organ! Born in Princeton, Illinois, Virgil Fox was a child prodigy who was playing church services on the organ by the age of ten. At seventeen he became the first organist ever chosen as the unanimous winner of the biennial contest of the National Federation of Music Clubs in Boston Winning a scholarship to study at the Peabody Institute, Fox became the first student in Peabody history to graduate with the highest honors after only one year. Only five years later he was appointed head of Peabody’s organ department Fox enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II and performed 600 recitals in three years to raise money for the armed services In 1946, Fox gave three sold-out concerts at the Library of Congress in which he played forty-four major organ works from memory. In the same year he was named organist of New York’s famed Riverside Church, where he served for nineteen years Virgil Fox was the featured performer at many of the national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, he performed three times at the White House, and was selected by the State Department to represent the U.S. at 1952’s first International Conference of Sacred Music in Switzerland In his long and brilliant career, Virgil Fox gave recitals on practically every important organ in the world. He was the first non-German artist to perform the works of J. S. Bach at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig In 1977, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his concert debut, he played a sold-out concert (“The Bach Gamut”) at Kennedy Center, at Tokyo’s NHK Hall, and in San Francisco, where the present recording was made Service to national and international music and audiophile press and to online ‘zines: Gramophone, Musical America, New York Times, Stereophile, The Absolute Sound, Soundstage, Ultra High Fidelity, ClassicsToday, International Record Review, and more. Clyde Roller served as conductor between 1962 and 1964, continuing the tradition established by Fennell. Donald Hunsberger became conductor in 1965 and led the ensemble for thirty-seven years to international prominence • Ever since its founding, the EWE has been in the forefront of elevating the wind repertory through recordings. Now they bring their legacy to Summit Records! • The ensemble’s current director, Mark Davis Scatterday, was introduced as the fourth conductor of this prestigious group during the EWE’s fiftieth anniversary celebration on February 8, 2002 • Mark Davis Scatterday is Professor of Conducting and Chair of the Conducting and Ensembles Department at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music. Birds Fragments “Astoundingly versatile musicians … make up Alter Ego.” — GRAMOPHONE
Alter Ego/Claudio Jacomucci, accordion HOSOKAWA: Atem Lied, for bass flute • In Memory of Isang Yun, for violin, cello & piano • Vertical Time Study I, for clarinet, cello & piano • Birds Fragments III, for accordion & flutes • Duo for violin & cello • Haiku for Pierre Boulez, for piano
Toshio Hosokawa (b. 1955) is one of today’s foremost living Japanese composers. Of his own work he has written: “My music is deeply influenced by Japanese Noh music; I am attempting to turn the vertical arrangement of time in Noh into my own sort of music … the tension of the moment when horizontal time meets vertical time creates visible cracks in time, visible gaps in space. My aim is to elicit the polisemy and complexity of these momentary sounds and to plumb their depths. Individual sounds are shaped like the brush strokes in oriental calligraphy. These brush strokes are drawn with consideration given to the blank space behind them. In the same vein, I have written this music with the space in which it will resound (the blank spaces of calligraphy) in mind.”

Evaristo Felice DALL’ABACO Violin Sonatas “The performers make the most of Italian spirit and songfulness with natural, not forced tempos throughout. The reproduction is first class.” — GOLDBERG
Giorgio Sasso, violin/Insieme Strumentale di Roma DALL’ABACO: Violin Sonatas, Op. 1 (sel.) • Sonatas for 2 Violins, Op. 3 (sel.)
The Op. 1 of Dall’Abaco (1675–1742) consists of chamber sonatas for violin solo and continuo, and dates from ca. 1705-06 during his stay in Brussels. Op. 3 consists of twelve church and chamber sonatas for two violins and bass, from his time in France. In this French period he was almost obliged to try to adapt the technical and stylistic tools acquired in his Italian apprenticeship to the peculiarities of the French style. The elements of modernity that Dall’Abaco’s music reveals do not alter its basically conservative quality. The structural balance of his music makes it an ideal representation of the Baroque sonata at the height of its classicity, by the purity and craft of its design. It would be hard not to acknowledge that the pages recorded for this CD may be considered – as far as melodic inventiveness, variety, and expressive power – to be the least conventional and most cleverly structured of their kind.

Astor PIAZZOLLA Complete Guitar Music Matteo Mela & Lorenzo Micheli, guitars/Per Arne Glorvingen, bandoneon/Ivan Rabaglia, violin/I Solist di Parma PIAZZOLLA: Tango Suite for 2 guitars • Histoire du Tango for violin & guitar • Cinco Piezas for solo guitar • Double Concerto for guitar, bandoneon & strings
Among Astor Piazzolla’s works, the group of guitar compositions is a very significant one, although he did not write for the instrument until the early 1980s. The cycle known as Cinco Piezas (Five Pieces) was composed in 1981. In March 1985, Piazzolla and his old friend Cacho Tirao premiered the Concerto for Bandoneon and Gujitar at the Liège Guitar Festival in Belgium, which saw also the premiere of Histoire du Tango. Less than a year later, in 1984, Piazzolla had completed his Tango Suite. Because of the wealth of colors, solid formal cohesion, and perfect balance between the instruments, these pieces can be counted among the most important works in late twentieth-century guitar repertoire. Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli are both accomplished and prize-winning classical guitarists from Italy. Mela has made recordings for Italian TV and appeared on several radio and TV broadcasts in Europe and in the U.S.

Peter Lichtenthal (1780–1853), born in Mozart’s lifetime, became a passionate advocate of his music. Lichtenthal was a doctor by profession, but also a composer and musicologist who wrote an important early biography of Mozart in 1816. Lichtenthal transcribed several Mozart compositions for string quartet, string quintet, and other ensembles. His transcription of the Requiem Mass for string quartet was designed to preserve Mozart’s great melodies in a domestic setting, before the existence of sound recordings. Likewise the beloved Piano Concerto No. 20, transformed here into a version that could be played in many bourgeois or upper-middle-class drawing rooms in the early nineteenth century. The Aglàia Quartet is one form of the larger Ensemble Aglàia, founded in Milan in 1992 and named after one of the three Graces from Greek mythology. They specialize in Baroque and pre-classical music performed on original instruments. They are joined here by Laura Alvini, one of Italy’s best-known keyboard artists for early music, both on harpsichord and fortepiano.
Guillame DUFAY Masses “The performances on this recording are conceived extremely carefully … the performers understand exactly the subtlety and complexity of Dufay’s counterpoint and really enjoy his melodic writing. A fundamental contribution to the Dufay discography.” — GOLDBERG

Guillaume Dufay (1397–1474), a native of Cambrai in Flanders, was already a famous composer of sacred and secular music in his twenties. From 1428 to 1433 he served in the Papal Choir at the Vatican. Thereafter he was employed as a music director a few years at a time in various cities, mostly in Italy, but often returned to Cambrai, where he eventually retired. Although he was responsible for few innovations in music and his forms were often remarkably simple, he dominated his field thanks to a distinctive gift for melody and a direct, persuasive manner. Perhaps his greatest achievement was making his compositions progress smoothly and gracefully; previously, most medieval music had a certain awkwardness about it, charming as it might be. His style dominated all others and determined the course of Western music well into the Renaissance.

This recording, the first on the new Paul Fritts organ at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle, documents the inaugural recitals given on the instrument in 2003. The new Paul Fritts organ embodies many of the aesthetic principles that represent a return to the core elements that personified the “golden age” of organ building exemplified by such noted historical organ builders as Arp Schnitger and Andreas Silbermann. The works on the program were chosen to showcase the organ’s unique qualities.

Petite Messe Solennelle (2 CDs) Quink Vocal Ensemble ROSSINI: Petite Messe Solennelle
Rossini’s “Little Solemn Mass, ” which the composer famously called “neither little, nor more than intermittently solemn,” was nevertheless a great success at its premiere in Paris on March 14, 1864, by which time the famous opera composer was already long “retired,” though he continued to write in non-operatic genres. Rossini was 71 when he wrote it, and it was to be his last large composition. The other small songs and piano pieces he created were published under the ironic title of Péchés de vieillesse – “Sins of My Old Age.” The first version was scored for two pianos, harmonium, and twelve voices and did not yet include the “O Salutaris” for soprano solo which was added later. Within three years Rossini had responded to requests for an orchestration; this version for large ensemble was not given until after the composer’s death, at the Théâtre Italien in Paris, on February 24, 1869. The Quink Vocal Ensemble is one of the best vocal groups in the world. Their repertoire includes a cappella works ranging from the early Renaissance to contemporary music. Quink has toured the U.S. at least once a year since 1985 and recorded many albums for Telarc.

Johann Wilhem Wilms (1772 –1847) was the most important composer in the Amsterdam music world during the first half of the nineteenth century, occupying a place similar to that of Berwald in Sweden. Born in Germany two years after Beethoven, he was influenced by the works of Haydn and Mozart. He wrote a number of symphonies, but only a handful are available on CD. Anthony Halstead’s prominence as a conductor and director in the periodinstrument movement increasingly takes him to those ‘modern’ orchestras whose players, using conventional instruments, wish to develop a stylistic awareness of authentic practice in the baroque, classical, and romantic eras. He has had a long association with The Hanover Band, and also has a special empathy with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the fortypiece Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, which has toured worldwide and is well known for its interpretations of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, but also of modern compositions. Halstead was recently awarded a Gold Disc for over 40,000 sales of one of his recordings.

ARENSKY & KORNGOLD Cello Works Escher Trio (Jeroen Bal, piano/Sonja van Beek, violin/Johan van Iersel, cello) ARENSKY: Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 32 • KORNGOLD: Piano Trio in D, Op. 1
Impressive homogeneity, an energized style, great individuality, and daring programming are qualities that have characterized the Escher Trio since its inception a decade ago. The Escher Trio has won international acclaim from successful tours of Germany, the Czech Republic, Norway, and the U.S., where it received rave reviews in several newspapers including the Washington Post. Anton Stepanovich Arensky (1861–1906) was a Russian composer, conductor, and pianist. Although many of his works have a Russian feel, he was not as nationalistic as Rimsky-Korsakov. His greatest influence was Tchaikovsky. Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897–1957) was a child prodigy, causing a sensation in Vienna at the beginning of the twentieth century and singled out by Gustav Mahler as a genius of music. Korngold started work on his Piano Trio Op. 1 in 1909 at the age of twelve, finishing it a month before his thirteenth birthday in April. He fled the Nazi regime for America and was welcomed with open arms by the Hollywood film industry. He wrote the scores for some nineteen films, including two Oscar winners.

Frank Bridge (1879–1941) is most often mentioned as the teacher of a later and more famous British composer, Benjamin Britten, but his own music has become more and more admired after a long period of neglect. The Dussek Piano Trio was formed in 1988 by three performers of considerable international experience. They have received widespread recognition for their performances at leading venues. Their recordings of trios by Brahms, Bridge, and Haydn have been highly acclaimed.

DAVY: Stabat Mater • BROWNE: Jesu, mercy, how may this be? • BROWN: Stabat Mater • CORNYSH THE ELDER: Stabat Mater • SHERYNGHAM: Ah, gentle Jesu • MACMILLAN: O bone Jesu
Nancy Argenta, soprano/Ian Partridge, tenor/Michael George/ bass/The Symphony of Harmony and Invention/The Sixteen/ Harry Christophers, director
The Crown of Thorns embodies the sacrifice at the heart of the Passion story in reflections such as the Stabat Mater text, a moving portrayal of the anguish of Christ’s mother, unaware of the resurrection to come. The vast power of the royal courts of England and Scotland may be long gone, but the sumptuous sounds of their worship are not lost. This disc brings together music of some of the most outstanding but now little-known composers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and introduces a major new work by one of this century’s most remarkable composers, James MacMillan.
HANDEL: Alexander’s Feast (2 CDs)
The nature of Alexander’s Feast is perhaps better summed up by its other title, The Power of Music. It is a celebratory ode for St. Cecilia’s Day, written by Dryden in 1697 for the traditional celebration of the patron saint of music and set in celebratory style by Handel in 1736. At its first performance that year, he incorporated two delightful concertos, one for harp and one for organ, and these are included on this recording. Winner of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritik prize.

The Mystery of the Cross
“This disc is something not far from a revelation ... elaborately sonorous, radiantly glowing ... as usual from this fine group, the performances are immaculately detailed, and, especially in the Messiaen, they have a very un-English sense of the sumptuousness that binds it in to a compelling whole.” — THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

The Sixteen/Harry Christophers, director JOLIVET: Épithalame • MESSIAEN: Cinq Rechants • DANIEL-LESUR: Le Cantique des Cantiques
Three composers from the group which styled itself “La Jeune France” here test vocal technique as never before in music that is rapturous, visceral, fresh, and erotic; wholly new and yet recognizably French, a subtle mix of primitive emotion and sophistication overlaid with the élan of a reborn Paris striding into the second half of the twentieth century.
The Sixteen/Harry Christophers, director VICTORIA: Lamentations for Maundy Thursday • HYMN: Vexilla Regis • Lamentations for Good Friday • HYMN: Pange Lingua • Lamentations for Holy Saturday
Scholar, mystic, priest, singer, organist, and composer – six persons all rolled into one and that is, quite simply, why Victoria was the most outstanding composer of the Spanish Renaissance. His music, highly dramatic and emotional, fully reflects the heartfelt passion with which Victoria wrote for the church. These performances are of new editions, specially commissioned for this series, and thus never before heard on disc. Authoritative liner notes by the eminent musicologist who made the editions. Stabat Mater Bettina Rubortone, soprano/Chiarastella Onorati, contralto/Benedetto Marcello Chamber Orchestra/Flavio Emilio Scogna, director PERGOLESI: Stabat Mater
This central Baroque masterpiece receives an authoritative performance by Early Music specialists, using the critical edition of the score realized by Helmut Hucke in 1987. Composed for two female soloists with strings and continuo, this work is a setting of the beautiful fourteenth century verses of Jacopone da Todi describing Mary standing at the foot of the cross. It was an audience success from its first performance thanks to the aura of pathos that colors the composer’s last work, as well as by his premature death in 1736 at the age of twenty-six. Born in 1710, Pergolesi was one of the first important composers of comic opera, of which La Serva Padrona is still popular today. The Stabat Mater, written in 1736 for Good Friday services in Naples, became the most frequently printed work of the entire eighteenth century. Other composers often stole from it – including J.S. Bach in his Psalm Tilge, Höchster, meine Sündern, BWV 1083.

Ludovico Antonio RONCALLI Harmonic Caprices for Spanish Guitar Giacomo Parimbelli, guitar RONCALLI: Capricci Armonici
If the surname of this composer sounds familiar, it is most likely because of his far more famous descendant, Cardinal Angelo Roncalli, who later became Pope John XXIII. Ludovico Roncalli (1654–1713) was a noble churchman himself (both an Abbott and Count), but also a guitarist and composer. This recording, made in 2004 (exactly 350 years after Roncalli’s birth), forms an essential contribution to a study of his work. The research was done by the artist, Giacomo Parimbelli (b. 1964), a noted Italian historian and master of the guitar. The Capricci Armonici were published in 1692 as Roncalli’s Op. 1, but little noted in later eras until Ottorino Respighi used some of the melodies in his Ancient Airs and Dances suites. Parimbelli notes that, “Roncalli should be numbered among the great guitarists of his day. The performance of his music requires a certain technical mastery of the instrument on the part of the interpreter and listening to it can easily transport us to the rose-colored salons of the Italian baroque period.” The guitar used on this recording is a historic six-stringed instrument made by Pasquale Vinaccia of Naples in 1878.

Concentus Lucensis Lauds on the Life of Jesus Concentus Lucensis/I Cantori del Miserere di Sessa Aurunca/Stefano Albarello, director 17 Lauds for the Resurrection and for the vigils of the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ
It is hard to draw a definite picture of the medieval dramatic song; although it can be clearly seen from their texts that the laude were widespread in Italy, we do not know how they were performed. Scholars are inclined to think that when the texts of dramatic laude were performed for an audience they were sung rather than recited, in the same way as the more archaic dramatic theater models. The field is therefore restricted to the few laudari with text and music handed down to us, surviving for the most part in two substantial manuscripts, the Laudario di Cortona and the Laudario Magliabechiano. For this recording, songs were selected that included dialogue and revolved around the life of Christ. The interpretative hypothesis employed here means to recreate the spontaneous spirit of the songs, performing parts of the laudario polyphonically in the form of discanti, something that is often still done in some Confraternities on the islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

SCHUBERT: 15 Lieder
GALILEI: Lute Sonatas (6) from Il Primo Libro d’Intavolatura di Liuto (1620) • Passemezzo e saltarello
Gundula Janowitz (born August 2, 1937 in Berlin) was one of the greatest lyric sopranos in modern history, renowned for her magnificent tone – often described as “creamy” or “silvery” – and her vocal control at the top of her range. She studied at the Graz Conservatory and, in 1960, made her debut in Vienna. Popularity came quickly for her. She was especially admired, and often cast, by Herbert von Karajan. Her fame came primarily from singing German-language compositions. She is mostly associated with works by Mozart, Wagner, Weber, Beethoven, R. Strauss, and Bach. She performed Elisabetta from Don Carlo and the Countess from The Marriage of Figaro brilliantly. An excerpt of the latter portrayal features prominently in the critically acclaimed 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption.
Michelagnolo Galilei (1575–1631) was the younger brother of Galileo Galilei, the famous astronomer – who also wrote some music. The fame of Galileo has quite overshadowed the fact that the whole family was highly musical, and their father, Vincenzo Galilei, was one of the outstanding composers and lutenists of his day. His more famous relatives have overshadowed Michelagnolo, but his music, as shown on this recording, is of the first quality. Paul Beier, a graduate of the Royal College of Music, London, is one of the most eminent lutenists working today. He has performed both as a soloist and in early music groups throughout Europe, Australia, and North and South America, and is the founder and director of Galatea.

Perhaps no musician has ever been more typecast than Giovanni Bottesini (1821–1889), known in his own day as “the Paganini of the double bass.” There is no escaping the fact that no composer wrote more (or more characteristic) music for this instrument, despite the fact that Bottesini also wrote a number of successful operas and was so admired as a conductor that he led the world premiere of Verdi’s Aida in 1871.
La Reverdie 20 medieval songs and dances about animals, by anonymous composers as well as Landino, von Wolkenstein, Giovanni da Firenze, Donato da Firenze, Jean Vaillant, Jacopo da Bologna & Marcabru
Animals are abundant in the art, heraldry, gastronomy, and music of the Middle Ages. Bestiaries were popular books describing animals, sometimes in fanciful terms, but always lovingly. This musical bestiary presents a vivid concert of medieval animal songs and dances as performed on period instruments by La Reverdie, an Early Music ensemble formed in 1984 by two pairs of sisters who studied under some of the leading personalities in the field. Their concerts have excited the enthusiasm of both critics and the public. Instruments heard include the lute, rebec, santur, lyre, viella, tabor, harp, and flutes. Order Date: June 23, 2006

Recordings of the legendary violinist Erica Morini (1904–1995) are truly treasures – especially ones as rare as these. Once one of the great concert artists, looked up to by both Heifetz and Milstein for inspiration, she spent her last years in ill health and seclusion after suffering the theft of her Stradivarius and all her scores and memorabilia. These HMV, Polydor, Victor, and Armed Forces Radio Service recordings from before World War II are priceless records of her genius.

Disc One contains all the hits produced by Leonard & Phil Chess and/or Willie Dixon in Chicago between 1947 and 1955. Disc Two features a live concert, recorded in Warsaw, at the International Folk Music Festival & Jazz Jamboree on October 22, 1976. Includes a twelve-page booklet featuring extensive biography and rare photos.
“Boogie Chillen,” a seemingly spontaneous combination of spoken narrative and verses sung over brusque changes of pace on the guitar, became a #1 hit, and the first million-seller for John Lee Hooker. Bernie Besman recorded the bulk of Hooker’s output up to 1952, and nearly all the tracks on this album originate from that period.

DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH SEPIA! Mae West The Fabulous Mae West & Other Wonderful Girls
CD: SEP 1075 (M) Standard Jewel Case File Under: Vocals
One of the greatest stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era, Mae West’s sexy style first found an audience in Broadway comedies before her film debut in 1932. Although she recorded sporadically, she found time in the fifties to cut an album of twelve risqué numbers, re-issued here in its entirety with eighteen added bonus tracks performed by glamorous lady singers of the day such as April Stevens, Damita Jo, Connie Rusell, and Diana Dors. All thirty tracks are innocently naughty!

Jack Smith hosted his own radio show in the forties before moving to television in the fifties, where he fronted programs like You Asked For It. He was known as Smilin’ Jack Smith because he radiated a truly cheerful sound. He scored twelve Top 30 hits in the forties, all of which are featured on this CD including his biggest sellers “Cruising Down the River,” “Civilization,” and “Jack, Jack, Jack.” All twenty-nine tracks are on CD for the first time and the booklet contains rare photos supplied by Smith himself, along with a personal note.
Felicia Sanders The Song from Moulin Rouge & Felicia at the Blue Angel
CD: SEP 1073 (M) Standard Jewel Case File Under: Vocals
In the fifties, Felicia Sanders was the crowd-drawer in chic New York clubs like Bon Soir. Despite “The Song from Moulin Rouge,” a massive hit single recorded with Percy Faith that reached #1 for eight weeks in 1953, Sanders has never had a solo CD in her name. This twenty-eight-track release is an attempt to rectify this injustice with the inclusion of sixteen sides from her single releases as well as the LP Felicia at the Blue Angel. Most tracks on CD for the first time. Liner notes by jazz critic Jim Gavin.

William Powell Life with Father/My Man Godfrey HOLLYWOOD’S MOST ENDURING LEADING MAN IN TWO GREAT FILMS! Total Running Time: 3 hrs 33 min Life With Father (1947) 118 min COLOR Starring: William Powell, Irene Dunne, Elizabeth Taylor Director: Michael Curtiz This is truly one of the best family films ever made. Based on a popular Broadway play by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse, the film explores family life in New York during the 1880s. Each scene is an amusing anecdote – for instance, the wife’s desperate attempts to have her despotic husband baptized or the father’s awkward moments explaining the facts of life to his unimpressed son. Earned major nominations from the Academy Awards and the New York Film Critics. My Man Godfrey (1936) 95 min B&W Starring: William Powell, Carole Lombard Director: Gregory La Cava This wacky comedy classic takes a stab at high society. A pretentious wealthy family adopts “Godfrey,” a bum with a secretive past. Working as their butler, Godfrey becomes completely embroiled in their lives and soon takes charge. Later, he surprises the family with some shocking news. The film received Academy Award nominations in all four acting categories, as well as for Best Director and Screenplay!

James Cagney Blood on the Sun/Time of Your Life A NEW TWIST FOR CINEMA’S QUINTESSENTIAL TOUGH GUY! Total Running Time: 3 hrs 26 min Blood on the Sun (1945) 98 min COLOR Starring: James Cagney, Sylvia Sidney, Robert Armstrong Director: Frank Lloyd An American newspaper editor (James Cagney) working in Japan between WWI and WWII investigates the murder of a fellow reporter and his wife. Meanwhile, he discovers the villainous Tanaka Plan (a real-life document), a Japanese plot for world domination. Realizing that his life is also in danger, he gets the help of a beautiful Japanese-American spy (Sylvia Sidney). An action-packed adventure filled with great martial art sequences! Time of Your Life (1948) 108 min B&W Starring: James Cagney, William Bendix, Broderick Crawford Director: H.C. Potter
DVD: PFX 190017 (C) Amaray File Under: Drama
Based on William Saroyan’s popular screenplay, this adaptation comes alive with an exceptional cast. A trashy San Francisco waterfront bar sets the stage for a cast of misfits, including ex-convicts and a variety of down-and-out characters. Cagney plays the central character, a philosophizing alcoholic ringleader who doles out sincere, heartfelt words of advice and inspiration.
