“The Alexander Quartet represents a real bargain … the performances are alert, sensitive, and full of vitality.” — GRAMOPHONE
“Robust, cohesive ensemble tone, lively sense of colour and a deep unshakable poise.” — Lord Menuhin, Musical America
Alexander String Quartet (Frederic Lifsitz, violin/Ge-Fang Yang, violin/Paul Yarbrough, viola/Sandy Wilson, cello) BEETHOVEN: String Quartets, Op. 18, Nos. 1-6 • String Quartets, Op. 59, Nos. 1-3 “Razumovsky” • String Quartet No. 10 in E flat, Op. 74 “Harp” • String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 • String Quartet No. 12 in E flat, Op. 127 • String Quartet No. 13 in B flat, Op. 130 • String Quartet No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 131 • String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132 • String Quartet No. 16 in F, Op. 135 • Grosse Fuge, Op. 133
• The Alexander String Quartet’s performances of Beethoven’s quartets have earned them international acclaim since 1985 • As the first American quartet to win London’s International String Quartet Competition, the quartet’s interpretations of Beethoven – whether in London, Geneva, Philadelphia, or Washington – have been consistently praised for their controlled and unflagging exuberance and imaginative sensitivity • The Alexander String Quartet is justifiably heralded as one of chamber music’s most compelling ensembles • In December 1995, marking the quartet’s first performance of the cycle in their hometown of San Francisco, Arte Nova invited the Alexander String Quartet to record the complete quartets of Beethoven • The Alexander String Quartet’s annual calendar of concerts regularly feature performances in Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland • At home in California, the members of the quartet direct the Morrison Chamber Music Center’s Instructional Program at San Francisco State University and serve as Ensemble-in-Residence with San Francisco Performances’ model community residency program • The quartet also maintains visiting residencies at Baruch College of the City University of New York, St. Lawrence University in Canton, and Allegheny College in Pennsylvania • In May 1995, Allegheny College awarded Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees to the members of the quartet in recognition of their unique contribution to the arts • The Alexander String Quartet is committed to the creation and performance of contemporary music and has commissioned more than two dozen works. Among the most recent are works by Bay Area composers Wayne Peterson, Richard Festinger, David Sheinfeld, and Robert Greenberg • The string quartets of Beethoven have stood for two centuries among the greatest chamber works ever composed, and as fascinating records of Beethoven’s development as a composer from his earliest period to the end of his life • In composing his Op. 18 quartets between 1798 and 1801, Beethoven was making his bid to enter the orbits of Haydn and Mozart • It was only five years between Op. 18 and Op. 59, but five years that had witnessed an outpouring of masterpieces. Op. 59 exudes the confidence and daring of a mature, creative artist • The late quartets are works of unparalleled imagination and originality. These quartets demonstrate the enormous conflict, and even contradiction, of Beethoven’s nature. They express a vast range of emotions, from childlike joy to extreme sorrow. They contain music of the utmost complexity and simplicity. They were problematic for audiences and remained so for decades, for they existed in the interior space of Beethoven’s own mind

CD: CHR 72212 (3M) Standard Double Jewel Case File Under: Classical
• The cantatas in this volume all date from Johann Sebastian Bach’s second year of office as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. The series of chorale cantatas, which breaks off in early 1725, forms an almost complete yearly cycle that derives an exceptional unity of style and content from its debt to established Lutheran hymnody • The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with The Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. Allegro is the exclusive U.S. distributor of these recordings • Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach’s most impressive opus • The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards • The Amsterdam Baroque Choir, founded in 1992, consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers • Begun in 1994, this series was called “the recording project of the nineties” by The Guardian and was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis “Echo Klassik” in Germany • The series continues to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world’s leading experts on the music of Bach

Devich Trio (Hanna Devich, piano/Sarah Oates, violin/Jasper Havelaar, cello) SMETANA: Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 15 • DVORˇÁK: Piano Trio in B-flat, Op. 21
• With his piano trio in the traditional key of joy, B flat major, Dvorˇák was continuing in the tradition of his two favorite composers, Mozart and Schubert • In contrast to Dvorˇák, Bedrich Smetana (1824–1884) left only three chamber music works of importance, one of which is performed here by the Devich Trio • Three cultures, three languages, and three temperaments make up the Devich Trio: Hungarian pianist Hanna Devich, Dutch cellist Jasper Havelaar, and South African violinist Sarah Oates • Hanna Devich, born in Budapest, graduated cum laude from the Franz Liszt Academy in 1991 with a diploma in piano solo performance. She had master classes with György Sebok, Zoltán Kocsis, and György Kurtag. For several years she has lived and performed in the Netherlands, active as soloist, chamber music artist, and on radio broadcasts • Born in Johannesburg, Sarah Oates began her violin studies at age nine and was soon winning prizes. In 1992 she won a scholarship to study in London. After master classes with Pinchas Zukerman and Yehudi Menuhin, she embarked on a successful concert career • Dutch cellist Jasper Havelaar, who began his studies at the age of eight, started his career in 1994 after completing his education at the Rotterdam Conservatory • The number of the trio’s concert engagements is increasing every year, with bookings in Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Hungary, and South Africa • In November 2004 their first CD was released on Fineline from Challenge Records, and was received enthusiastically by the press

Jan Koetsier Forbes Plays Koetsier CD: SMT 462 (R) Standard Jewel Case File Under: Classical
• The name Jan Koetsier is familiar to many performers, teachers, and students of the tuba. This is due primarily to the popularity of three compositions, which are frequently performed in recitals and have been included in the repertoire for numerous competitions • However, for many this is where their knowledge of Koetsier’s tuba works ends. Thankfully, he was inspired to compose five additional works that feature the tuba in a solo capacity • Though a few of these works have previously been recorded, this is the first recording to include all of his solo tuba works • This eclectic recording showcases all seven of Koetsier’s tuneful and sometimes quirky works, performed by tubist Mike Forbes • Aggressive media mailing to classical press including Gramophone and American Record Guide. • This recording is about the perception of Mozart after his death … and a very special commemoration for the Mozart Anniversary Year! • The transcriptions and free fantasies that Petronel Malan has selected trace Mozart reincarnated and transfigured through the ears, techniques, and compositional gifts of seven composers • Chronologically, they range from Hummel, a Mozart pupil, to Friedman, a twentieth-century keyboard virtuoso who survived World War II. Stylistically, the range is equally wide • This is pianist and triple Grammy nominee Petronel Malan’s second album for Hänssler Classic • Her debut disc Transfigured Bach: The Complete Bach Transcriptions of Bartok, Lipatti and Friedman, was nominated for three Grammy awards, including 2004’s Best Instrumental Solo Album

CLASSICAL “The performances are extremely polished and marvellously expressive, so full of vitality with an electrifying feel at times. The superb German orchestra are clearly making a real name for themselves and play this repertoire so comfortably that it could have been written especially for them. Thomas Fey, who is certainly destined for great future success, brilliantly assists the orchestra to communicate his interpretation with freshness and so assuredly to the listener in a way that could scarcely be bettered. Another bonus is the recording, which is rich and warm, yet detailed with superb clarity of sound and perfectly balanced.” — MICHAEL COOKSON, MUSIC MASTERS MANAGEMENT

Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra/Thomas Fey, conductor HAYDN: Symphony No. 52 in C minor • Symphony No. 49 in F minor “La Passione” • Symphony No. 58 in F
• A continuation of the critically acclaimed Haydn Symphony Cycle much discussed in the international music press! The Heidelberg Symphony produces idiomatic performances of these immortal symphonies with a unique and judicious blend of modern and period instruments, demonstrating that Haydn’s music – like all great historic music – must dwell both in the past and present to be viable • This sixth volume features three of Haydn’s “Sturm und Drang” symphonies • Thomas Fey, born in 1960, studied piano and conducting at the High School for Music at Heidelberg-Mannheim. He was a student of Nikolaus Harnoncourt from 1988 to 1991 at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and also studied under Leonard Bernstein • Fey was named music director of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra in 1993. He has led hundreds of concerts in the U.S., Europe, and South America, and made numerous radio broadcasts and recordings • Fey’s repertoire extends from Bach to Brahms, and his recordings of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven have received special praise from many critics

• This recording presents three different, utterly contrasting responses to the quest for expression and the solution to the old problem of how to merge text and music into a unity • The common theme linking these compositions – “The Passion and Pains of Love” – has been wrested from the texts of these choral works: they are poetic declarations of love, descriptions of nature with erotic and intimate imagery, and poems that speak of unfulfilled yearning and breaking hearts • Their poetic quality opens a range of expression every bit as varied as the three musical settings they stimulated • This spectacular program of choral and ensemble virtuosity features music from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century • Rare recordings feature the amazing arrangements of Clytus Gottwald • The selections contrast Wagner’s Romantic but forward-looking compositional style with the Late Romantic development of Mahler and Richard Strauss, and the serial technique of avant-garde composer Luigi Nono • The SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart and Director Marcus Creed are among the most highly respected virtuoso ensembles specializing in the performance of new music for choir

• During his forty-eight year career, music critics ranked John Charles Thomas with Enrico Caruso, hailing him as one of the great voices of the twentieth century • One critic wrote, “I have seen a good many so-called enthralled audiences during my earthly career, I have seen them stand up and clap. I have heard them cheer. But I have never seen one just refuse to go home. That is ... until Mr. Thomas’ concert!” • Thomas made his operatic debut in Washington as Amonasro in Aida, on the eve of President Coolidge’s inauguration in 1924 • Over seventy-eight minutes of music on one CD! • The operatic companion disc to John Charles Thomas: An American Classic • Born in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania in 1891, John Charles Thomas studied voice at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore • After a successful career in musical comedy, he made his operatic debut in Washington DC and later sang with the Royal Opera, Brussels • He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1934 in Verdi’s La traviata, joining the company in 1935 • Well-known as a concert and radio singer, Thomas also appeared in motion pictures. He died in 1960 • Despite his magnificent voice, critics were often unkind to Thomas because he advocated translating opera into English and sang a large number of light classics in his recitals, things that stereotyped him as a “bourgeois” artist

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN Bagatelles “Such perceptive and musically sensitive pianism from one so young is something to treasure. The feeling for each composer’s sound world is absolute.” — AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE
Konstantin Lifschitz, piano BEETHOVEN: Bagatelle in C minor, WoO 52 • 7 Bagatelles, Op. 33 • Bagatelle in C, WoO 56 • 11 Bagatelles, Op. 119 • 6 Bagatelles, Op. 126
This CD presents one of today’s most respected young pianists, Konstantin Lifschitz, in rarely recorded works by a great composer. The repertoire consists of intimate miniatures by Beethoven called “Bagatelles,” and this disc contains practically all of them. While most pianists have recorded the composer’s sonatas, concertos, and variations, the Bagatelles have been somewhat neglected, even by the most famous interpreters of Beethoven’s piano music. These are live performances in excellent digital sound. Konstantin Lifschitz is a wonderful young pianist who often gives concerts in the U.S. and Canada, and who has somewhat of a cult following among piano connoisseurs. Promotional service to English and French CBC and to several important newspapers in Canada (La Presse, The Gazette, The Globe & Mail).

• Born in Milan, Italy, in 1968, Vittorio Ghielmi won two major prizes in viola da gamba playing in 1995 and 1997 • Since then he has performed in the most important concert halls of Europe and the U.S., and as a soloist with such orchestras as Il Giardino Armonico, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra • Ghielmi often collaborates in duo or chamber music with his brother Lorenzo, and with artists such as Gustav Leonhardt, Cecilia Bartoli, and Giuliano Carmignola • He is the founder of the ensemble Il Suonar Parlante, which plays both classical and jazz music • Vittorio Ghielmi has recorded widely on the Auvidis, Decca, Teldec, Supraphon, Ars Musici, and Winter & Winter labels • He now teaches viola da gamba at the Luca Marenzio Conservatory in Brescia, Italy • This new album uses music to evoke the sensation of colors in works from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries • Dutch cellist and composer Ernst Reijseger plays his own compositions interwoven with improvisational parts
Real Quiet MELLITS: Tight Sweater • Agu • Fruity Pebbles • Disciples of Gouda
• Marc Mellits was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1966. He was already composing piano music before he started formal piano lessons at age six. He went on to study at the Eastman School of Music, Yale School of Music, Cornell University, and Tanglewood • His composition teachers during this period included Samuel Adler, Martin Bresnick, Bernard Rands, Christopher Rouse, Joseph Schwantner, Roberto Sierra, and Steven Stucky, yet one hears other influences in Mellits’ music. The sound worlds of Steve Reich (whom Mellits considers a mentor) and Philip Glass resonate inside of this music, not to mention the rock and funk music from his childhood in the seventies • Mellits is a miniaturist, composing works that are comprised of short, contrasting movements. His music is eclectic, all-encompassing, and open to reflecting whatever enters his life and mind during the period of creation • Just recently, he was awarded the prestigious 2004 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Award. Although this recording is the first dedicated completely to his music, other Mellits works can be heard on Santa Fe New Music and CRI/ Emergency Music • Real Quiet is a three-man band dedicated to creating an exclusive repertoire of hard-edged acoustic and electro-acoustic music by today’s leading composers • Tight Sweater was written in 2005 for Real Quiet on a commission from the Muzik3 Foundation • Fruity Pebbles, the earliest work represented on this album, established Mellits’s reputation as “the witty post-minimalist.” Like many of the post-minimalist composers, Mellits has found a way to use minimalist techniques without relying on them entirely • Agu was written in 2004 for Andrew Russo on a commission from the James S. Marcus Foundation • Disciples of Gouda was written in 2003 on a joint commission from the Common Sense Composers Collective and Essential Music

Cello Sonata in D minor, Op. 40 • Viola Sonata, Op. 147 (tr. Prieto)
• The year 2006 marks the centenary of the birth of Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the twentieth century’s most beloved, yet enigmatic, composers. The mystery and controversy that enveloped a considerable part of his life have pursued him even after his death in 1975 • This recording will be especially noted in this 100th Anniversary Year • The two sonatas recorded here were written forty-one years apart. The cello sonata is a youthful work, written when the composer was twentyfour, while the viola sonata (transcribed here for cello) was his last piece, composed barely a month prior to his death • Cellist Carlos Prieto, hailing from Mexico, has premiered countless works by Spanish and Latin American composers, and made numerous acclaimed recordings • Prieto, a longtime friend of Igor Stravinsky and colleague of Dmitri Shostakovich, has played with orchestras all over the world and has premiered over seventy compositions, most of them written expressly for him • It was Prieto who gave the first performances of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 in cities of both Mexico and Spain • Carlos Prieto has made his own transcription for cello of the Shostakovich Viola Sonata, which he performs here • Prieto has given recitals and played with orchestras the world over, in New York, London, Berlin, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Madrid, and elsewhere • Pianist Doris Stevenson has won lavish praise from critics and public alike in performances around the world • She has performed with Gregor Piatigorsky, Ruggiero Ricci, and Paul Tortelier, and has made a number of recordings, one of which, featuring rediscovered works of Stravinsky, recently received a Grammy nomination

The Four Pieces on this recording came the next year • John Adams, born in 1947 in Worcester, Massachusetts, is a much-honored American composer with strong roots in minimalism • His opera Nixon in China won the 1989 Grammy for Best Contemporary Composition • Adams’s work On the Transmigration of Souls, a choral work commemorating the victims of the September 11 attacks, won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Music • Phrygian Gates is a piano piece written by Adams in 1977–1978. The piece, together with its smaller companion China Gates, is considered Adams’s “opus one.” They are, according to his own claims, his first compositions consisting of a coherent personal style • Italian pianist Emanuele Arciuli performed a program at the Italian Academy in 2003 that was described by Anne Midgette in the New York Times as “an excellent recital of contemporary music” • While Arciuli’s repertoire ranges from the music of Bach to the present, he is best known for exciting and nuanced performances of recent music for solo piano, particularly by American and Italian composers such as John Cage, Morton Feldman, Giacinto Scelsi, Salvatore Sciarrino, John Adams, and Frederic Rzewski

Miguel Llobet (1878–1938) was a close contemporary and friend of Manuel de Falla (1876 –1946), but never became so famous. In fact, his fame stems largely from his arrangements of Falla’s music, such as his transcription for two guitars of Falla’s ballet El amor brujo. Falla’s own Homenaje pour le tombeau de Debussy is surely one of the greatest guitar works of the twentieth century, and it and other masterpieces are appropriately joined here by a work of Llobet’s own composition. Lira Orfeo was a Barcelona music society of which Llobet was both a founder and the director. This recording employs only vintage instruments with connections to Spanish and Catalan music.

André Jolivet (1905–1974) was one of the most admired French composers of the mid-twentieth century, and at one time there were fairly abundant recordings of his works. Like many composers, his star has faded a bit since his death, as the world has gone on to other things – but like all good composers, his star will rise again, and this recording goes some way to help it along. While utterly different from each other, the pieces recorded here cover almost the entire creative life of Jolivet. Mario Caroli is one of the outstanding masters of the flute in Italy today.

The enormous success of the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo (1901–1999) assured him a place as the most important Spanish composer following World War II, although its popularity was never equaled by any of his many other works. Joaquín Turina (1882–1949) became one of the grandfathers of the twentieth-century Spanish musical tradition. Turina was fascinated by the possibility of featuring Spanish motifs and melodies in a rich orchestral setting, as can be heard in his Canto a Sevilla (1927). Guitarist Luis Orlandini was born in Chile and began guitar studies at age eleven. A major prize led to many concerts and radio appearances throughout Germany and in many European countries. Since 1994 he has been a professor of music in Santiago. Born in Barcelona, soprano Ana Rodrigo is today one of Spain’s best-known singers, from zarzuela to opera and sacred music. Since the 1994 season, Adrian Leaper has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria.

English composer Gustav Holst (1874–1934) is universally loved for his popular orchestral suite The Planets, but much of his other estimable orchestral music is seldom heard. This CD offers a sampling of the very best “beyond The Planets.” Ross Pople studied at the Paris Conservatory and, at age twenty-six, was invited by Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez to be principal cellist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the youngest ever in the history of the orchestra. In 1980 he founded the London Festival Orchestra, whose numerous recordings for Hyperion and ASV have attracted positive reviews, and he has been seen often on the BBC. The repertoire of the London Festival Orchestra embraces the very widest range – from the eclectic and contemporary to the classical and baroque, from Boccherini and Bach to Tippett and Tavener. The excellence of the LFO’s playing is reflected in the outstanding reviews its recordings have universally received.

Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) was, along with Schubert, Schumann, and Hugo Wolf, one of the four pillars of German art song, or lieder. These composers, along with their worthy if lesser compatriots Loewe and Franz, produced a body of intimate vocal chamber music that reached such a pinnacle of subtlety, power, and beauty that it has never since been matched. This CD opens the window on a pair of sterling young interpreters who bring a breath of fresh air to the songs of Brahms, so many of which tell of spring and green forests. Baritone Roman Trekel was born in Pirna and at first studied oboe. In the 1980s, he switched to voice lessons at the famed Berlin Hochschule für Musik, where he graduated with distinction. He joined the Berlin Staatsoper in 1986 and has sung leading roles in Mozart, Wagner, and Verdi, but scored his first huge success as Pelléas in Debussy’s opera in a new production conducted by Michael Gielen. He went on to win First Prize in a 1989 lieder competition in London, which led to a long roster of concert and song recital engagements. He has sung under many of the world’s great conductors, and since 1996 has sung regularly at the Bayreuth Festival.

FALLA: El amor brujo • Three dances from El sombrero de tres picos • Noches en los jardines de España
• At the request of the Spanish dancer Pastora Imperia, Manuel de Falla (1876– 1946) composed the ballet El amor brujo (Love, the Magician) in 1914/15. In the following year, he finished an arrangement of the work for orchestra alone. Gregorio Martinez Sierra wrote the libretto of the ballet, based on an Iberian saga • El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat, 1919) was based on a tale by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, and Martinez Sierra wrote the ballet adaptation. There are several key dance sequences that Falla added at the express request of the ballet’s commissioner Sergei Diaghilev, who had learned to love Spanish dancing during World War I when he sought refuge in Spain. Spanish gypsy dancing thus inspired all three of the dances recorded on this CD • In Noches en los jardines de España (Nights in the Gardens of Spain), which was composed between 1911 and 1915, Falla created a work of art inspired by the famous buildings of the region: the Moorish royal palace Generalife and the Alhambra in Granada • In 1993, Ricardo Castro became the first South American pianist to win the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition. His concerts led him to Vienna, Hamburg, Toronto, Zurich, Munich, London, Stockholm, Madrid, and Paris • The Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, which has been in existence since 1845, has gained an outstanding international reputation: it is a permanent guest at well-known festivals in Europe and has worked with such soloists as Alfredo Kraus, Placido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé, Sabine Meyer, and Maria João Pires • Since the 1994 season, Adrian Leaper has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the orchestra. • In 1855, Liszt was commissioned to compose a mass for the consecration of the Basilica in Esztergom, some ninety kilometers away from Budapest • Although Liszt’s Missa Solemnis for Esztergom stands within the tradition of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and was written for a large orchestra, the composer clearly shows that he is striving for simplicity and conciseness in a form that conforms to Catholic rite • After passing his flute examinations with distinction, Jacques Grimbert continued studies at the Paris Conservatory National Superieur de Musique under Messiaen, Milhaud, Dufourcq, Fourestier, and Rosenthal. Studies then followed in Basle under Pierre Boulez • He also assisted at the rehearsals of great symphonic works by, among others, Bernstein, Celibidache, Maazel, Mehta, Ozawa, and Solti (1970–1976) • The diversity of his research and engagements led to the founding of various ensembles and festivals (Chœur National, Florilegium Musicum de Paris, Ars Europa, Musique aux Invalides, Festival de Musique Sacrée de Paris) • In 1975, he founded a choir and orchestra of the Sorbonne University in Paris, and in 1976 became a professor and music director there. • Medea is one of the most fascinating yet contradictory characters of Greek mythology. The daughter of Hekate and niece of Circe, she was considered a famous magician who took lives and then spread them anew, presiding over celestial growth and death. The legend of her as a killer of children developed much later • Christa & Gerhard Wolf ’s libretto for Georg Katzer’s composition is based on the novel Medea – A Modern Retelling, published by Christa Wolf in 1995 • Medea in Korinth shows typical parameters of an oratorio. However, Katzer forgoes the recitative, for example, that takes on the narrative function of the oratorio • The arias, duets, chorales, and fugues near the end of the sections are not part of Medea. Only at the very end, the chorus leaves its acting role, citing a choral intonation and thus entering the role of a reflecting chorus. For those reasons, Georg Katzer does not consider his composition an oratorio but “oratorical scenes” • Born in 1935 in Silesia, Georg Katzer was a master composition student of Hanns Eisler at the Akademie der Künste of the German Democratic Republic. In 1982, he founded the Studio for Electroacoustic Music. Since 1963, he has been working as a freelance composer in and around Berlin • Born in 1929, German writer Christa Wolf worked for years as an editor, but has been a freelance writer since 1962. Her novel Medea – A Modern Retelling was published in 1996 in Munich

WAGNER: Die fliegende Holländer [The Flying Dutchman] (complete opera)
• Wagner’s early masterpiece is heard in an authoritative, truly classic performance from the composer’s own theater in Bayreuth, Germany, the shrine and Mecca of the true Wagnerite • Some of the greatest singers of the era lead the cast, including CanadianAmerican bass-baritone George London (1920 –1979), the first American ever to sing the Dutchman at Bayreuth; beloved Viennese soprano Leonie Rysanek (1926–1998), known as the “Queen of Hearts” at the Salzburg Festival; and German bass Josef Greindl (1912–1993), a stalwart of the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, where he sang in 1,369 performances, mostly Wagner! • The opera was inspired by Wagner’s reading of a book by Heinrich Heine, Edward Fitzball’s The Flying Dutchman or The Phantom Ship, and Wilhelm Hayff ’s Geisterschiff (Ghost Ship), as well as his own perilous sea voyage in 1839 • Der fliegende Holländer is one of the most vivid and colorful of all German Romantic operas, with music that is often hair-raisingly exciting. • This classic performance of Richard Strauss’s Elektra, recorded live on August 7, 1957, is a priceless record of one of the greatest overall casts ever assembled for this explosive drama • Today’s listener will be startled to see the famous name of soprano Marilyn Horne, long since become an operatic superstar, listed as the “fourth maid” in this production of fifty years ago, but this was at the very beginning of her now legendary career • The “fifth maid,” Lisa Otto (b. 1919), was also to have a fine solo career later on, especially in Mozart, and the “third maid,” contralto Sieglinde Wagner (1921–2003), had an unusually long career of forty-four years as an opera and concert singer • The great conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos (1896–1960) was born in Greece but made most of his successful career in the U.S. He was conductor of the New York Philharmonic 1951–1957 and was a mentor to Leonard Bernstein, who succeeded him • Recordings conducted by Mitropoulos are among the most desired collectors’ items in the catalogues today, as he made few recordings during his lifetime Order Date: July 23, 2006

Gioacchino ROSSINI
Tristan und Isolde (3 CDs)
L’occasione fa il ladro
“Magic happens as Kleiber conducts with fire, unearthing little nuances that others throw away, always in the interest of the piece at large. For the Kleiber-Tristan experience, this is the recording to get...” — JENS F. LAURSON, IONARTS.ORG
Margherita Rinaldi, Stefania Malagù, Carlo Gaifa, et al., vocal soloists/RAI Orchestra & Chorus, Turin/Vittorio Gui, conductor
Helge Brilioth, Catarina Ligendza, Yvonne Minton, Kurt Moll, Donald McIntyre, et al., vocal soloists/Bayreuth Festival Orchestra & Chorus/Carlos Kleiber, conductor WAGNER: Tristan und Isolde (complete opera)
As all collectors lament, recordings of the late, great conductor Carlos Kleiber are far too few. Kleiber made a studio recording of Tristan and Isolde, but this live performance from Bayreuth in 1974 is generally considered to be superior. The soloists are unsurpassed in their roles, and the conducting is perhaps the best one will ever hear.

ROSSINI: L’occasione fa il ladro (complete opera)
Giaocchino Rossini (1792 –1868) was just twenty years old when he wrote this little comedy (known in English as “The Opportunity Makes the Thief ”) – but it was far from his first opera. In fact, it was his seventh. Written in just eleven days, the little farsa was received coolly on its first night on November 24, 1812, and gained scant notice during four subsequent performances. Mountings after that were infrequent and it was to become one of Rossini’s least-known comic operas. Recent revivals, like this live performance captured in 1973, have given it a new lease on life, as it is full of the breezy charm of its amiable composer.

TIPPETT: The Midsummer Marriage (complete opera)
MEYERBEER: Les Huguenots (complete opera)
Michael Tippett (1905–1998) became one of the most influential and respected British composers with several major operas to his credit, of which The Midsummer Marriage is still the best known. First performed at Covent Garden on January 27, 1955, to mostly hostile reviews; since then it has slowly acquired ever more positive notices. This recording of the 1955 broadcast of the world premiere starring Joan Sutherland is one of the most legendary documents in the history of modern opera.
This live broadcast from Vienna in 1971 brings together one of the most outstanding casts ever assembled for this rarely heard opera, a situation due in great part to the lack of singers able today to satisfy Meyerbeer’s sometimes almost superhuman demands on the human voice. When Les Huguenots was popular at The Met, in the late nineteenth century, performances were known as “nights of seven stars” because no fewer than seven superstar vocalists were required to put the opera across.

Tappa is a form of Indian classical vocal music whose specialty is its rolling pace based on fast, subtle, knotty construction. The arrangement of words, with the help of tone vibrations performed in an exquisite vocal style, create a charming atmosphere. Syamasangeet, a rich branch of Hindu devotional songs or hymns to the goddess, are the epicenter of all energy of this universe.
Kazi Nazrul Islam, known as the “rebel poet” of Bengali literature and the “Nightingale of Bengali music,” was one of the most colorful personalities of undivided Bengal between 1920 and 1930. Nazrulgeeti presents some of his more popular compositions.

Lulendo Angola
CD: BUD 7263 (Q ) Digipak File Under: Africa
QTY NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
· Lulendo is one of the too-rare contemporary artists to come up with new, original music using African instrumentation. The likembe (elsewhere known as sanza or kalimba) can even qualify as the most African of all instruments in that none exist outside of Africa and the African diaspora · As a child listening to his grandfather, Lulendo developed a passion for this lovely, melodic percussion instrument, which he taught himself to play. On his new album, more ambitious than 2001’s À qui profite le crime, his innovation lies in the way he uses the likembe, revealing it as ideally adapted to the funky rhythms of such groups as Earth, Wind and Fire · A refugee living in Paris since 1982, Lulendo defines himself as an African from Angola. Deeply marked by the terrible civil war that drove him away from his native Luanda, Lulendo delicately expresses his nostalgia and the sorrow of separation · His beautiful voice, ranging from tenor to falsetto, may remind the listener that he was once a backing singer with Papa Wemba · Features exciting work by some great instrumentalist guests: Didier Lockwood’s jubilant violin, John Helliwell’s Creole clarinet, and the bluesy accents of Claude Samard’s pedal-steel guitar · Lulendo has received accolades in National Geographic, Le Parisien, Libération, NovaPlanet, Zurban, World Magazine, Mondomix, Africa International, Lylo, Chrous, Africultures, and more · National campaign by Allegro Media will service top print magazines; NPR and college radio blanketed nationally
Renat Sette Solo In a warm, powerful voice, Renat Sette revisits songs collected in the Haute Provence region in Southern France. The scientific accuracy of his research and the aesthetic exactness of his updates contribute to the formal achievement of this work. His approach respects these traditional songs of ingenuous lyricism, whose themes are often metaphorical. By their power of evocation, their resonance in today’s times and their intrinsic seduction, brilliantly interpreted by Sette, reveal an unknown, multicultural facet of Haute Provence.
