TRACK LISTING The Beat Goes On • Livin’ In My Skin • Buried Alive • (Blues for) Robert Johnson • Mimi • Pretty Beat • The Ballad of Hollis Brown • In the Beginning • Feel Like Goin’ Home • Freedom Song • Dearly Beloved • All Light Up • Balboa Island

SELLING POINTS Balboa Island is legendary British rock group The Pretty Things’ long-awaited eleventh studio album in a forty-three-year recording career. Their first CD release in over eight years, many already regard it as on par with their very greatest sixties and seventies recordings. • From the stadium-sized rock of “All Light Up” through the raw acoustic guitar blues of “Feel Like Going Home” and the Beatles/Abbey Road style of “Dearly Beloved,” The Pretty Things have crafted a dark album—brooding, powerful, mysterious, and edgy. • Founded in 1964 by lead vocalist Phil May and lead guitarist Dick Taylor— who was the Rolling Stones’ original bass guitarist prior to starting The Pretty Things—the band has always followed its own fiercely independent path. Although the huge international breakthrough of the Rolling Stones or The Who has eluded them, their uncompromising musical integrity has given them a cult following around the world. • The thirteen new songs—mostly originals, but also containing an acoustic cover of early Bob Dylan song “The Ballad of Hollis Brown”—have a rawness, intensity, depth, and passion unmatched by any of their contemporaries: The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, or The Who. • First 5,000 copies of the North American release of this CD include a beautiful full-color poster of original artwork by lead vocalist Phil May, making this first edition an instant must-have collector’s item for the group’s many fans! • September/October 2007 US tour in preparation. • Media campaign by Jazz Promo Services aimed at national rock/blues print and e-media. “With each visit to Chicago … Joey DeFrancesco seems to attain another, still-more-remarkable degree of technical fluidity.” — Chicago Tribune “Joey DeFrancesco is rightfully known as an incredibly talented organ player. He’s got an array of solid CDs that document his rise to the top. He can fit into any setting, from hard bop to the electronic funk of 1980s Miles Davis. He can swing a room of lead balloons … He’s had the audacity to usurp his idol, the legendary Jimmy Smith, atop annual critics’ polls … [and] critics and observers say he’s responsible for the re-birth of the Hammond B-3 and organ music’s place in jazz.” — All About Jazz “The music of Joey DeFrancesco—an important force in the revival of the Hammond B-3 organ as a jazz instrument—runs the gamut from soul-jazz and bluesy grooves à la Jimmy Smith to hard bop to the more advanced modal style of John Coltrane disciple Larry Young.”

— All Music Guide “No less significant in the story of Joey’s ascendancy is the ability he has shown to create excitement. The tension he is capable of building brings back to mind a tradition that began some fifty years ago, when Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts began stirring up audiences around the country.” — Leonard Feather

SELLING POINTS Franco-African jazz singer Cécile Verny, who entered the German jazz charts in Spring 2005 at #13 with her album European Songbook, has set yet another milestone with The Bitter and the Sweet, continuing the tradition for which her ensemble has long been celebrated. • Verny applies African roots, French song tradition, and smooth jazz “scat-robatics” to unite the rhythmic, pulsing compositions of her quartet. Here, her incredible voice sounds more personal than ever. Excellent musicians accompany her, highly inspired and very skilled, and their performances demonstrate modern jazz at its best. • Cécile Verny was born on the Ivory Coast, raised in France, and now lives in Germany. In either English or French, she is a singer who knows intuitively how to make magic—and how to do so with her ensemble, creating dreamy songs with incredible intensity, swing & blues that tingle and drive, and chanson sounds full of warmth. •

STEVEN HALPERN In the Om Zone

SELLING POINTS This release features a group softly chanting a continuous Om mantra combined with keyboards and other instrumentation—a powerful, user-friendly soundtrack to empower meditation and yoga. The entire album is tuned to the fundamental harmonic frequency of the cosmos. • According to the ancient Vedic spiritual traditions of India, Om is the eternal, primordial sound in which past, present, and future are included. Om is considered to be the basic sound of creation, from which our world came into existence. • Many people love to chant with others at the end of yoga class, but are uncomfortable chanting alone at home. In the Om Zone provides an instant “yoga class” of backup chanters, giving new meaning to spiritually oriented, good karma karaoke. • In the Om Zone supports listeners in using their voices to send healing frequencies to the body, mind, and spirit. • Soothing sustained voices chant Om in harmonic fifths, creating a continuously flowing soundscape perfect for yoga and meditation. Other highlights include the dynamic world grooves of the Hot Chakra Band, the universal “Om Nama Shivaya” mantra, and a transcendently chilled version of the Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows.” • Many listeners experience an immediate and pleasurable “buzz.” • Part I features six meditative tracks with voices and keyboards. • Part II adds world rhythmic grooves to the Om chant. • Ads with New Age Retailer, Leading Edge Review, Whole Life Times, and New York Yoga. • Various radio interviews. • Steven Halpern’s catalog has soundscanned over 415,000 units. • New Living Expo 2007 appearances. •

GORDON JACOB Symphonies 1 & 2 London Philharmonic Orchestra/Barry Wordsworth: conductor JACOB: Symphony No. 1 • Symphony No. 2 in C Gordon Jacob (1895-1984) was a pupil of Vaughan Williams and of Stanford at the Royal College of Music, which he attended from 1920 to 1924. He was then taken onto its teaching staff, resigning in 1966. • In the year of the Festival of Britain (1951), he had three London premieres, but beginning with the promotion of the avant-garde by the BBC in 1959, the music of his generation began to fall into disrepute and is only now being rediscovered. • Jacob’s output of some four hundred works comprises instrumental, vocal, choral, and chamber music for every conceivable combination of instruments and voices. • These two works were written fifteen years apart, with a personal language that was unique to Jacob. • Ads with Gramophone. •

London Philharmonic Orchestra/Sir Adrian Boult: conductor ELGAR: Symphony No. 1 in A flat, Op. 55 • Symphony No. 2 in E flat, Op. 63 Elgar’s two symphonies have a special place in English musical history. When they were first played they towered head and shoulders—in sheer technique, let alone content—above previous symphonic offerings by British composers. • Today when we have the magnificent symphonies of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Bax, Rubbra, Britten, and others to set beside them, they still stand apart, having already achieved the status of classics. SINIGAGLIA: Vier Lieder, Op. 15 • Drei Lieder, Op. 17 • Drei Lieder, Op. 23 • Quattro Romanze, Op. 34 • Tre Canti, Op. 37 • Romanze

R.82 & 85 • Concerto for lute, 2 violins & basso continuo, R.93 Vivaldi’s works for lute have been somewhat under-appreciated, especially in the case of the Double Concerto, R.540, which is surely a masterpiece. Vivaldi drew on his charges at the Venice Foundling Hospital, who could provide him with a wide range of instrumental sounds for the works requested of him by the Bohemian Count von Wrtby.

Not many compositions by Leone Sinigaglia (1868-1944) are remembered at all these days, and this lapse is now deservedly being corrected with the present recording. These works are from the thirty surviving examples of the composer’s chamber songs, preserved by the Fondo Sinigagli of the library at the Verdi College of Music in Turin. The songs use lyrics by German, Italian, and French poets, as well as some folk lyrics.

Alessandro Solbiati (b. 1936) is one of Italy’s leading modern composers of orchestral music, known for pursuing what he calls “a sense of tradition,” i.e., infusing music with “what has always been true, alive, and common throughout the history of composition”—the opposite, says Solbiati, of “neoclassicism,” or mere academicism. This is the fourth Stradivarius release featuring Italy’s leading symphony orchestra, the National Orchestra of Italian Radio and Television.

One of Italy’s outstanding New Music ensembles presents works by native composer Mauro Lanza and French composer Gérard Pesson, who wrote these three works while living in Italy from 1991 to 1995.

To his tonal language he also brought elements of folklore (in this case, Hebraic), and thus many passages in his music remind one of similarly conceived works by Béla Bartók or Dmitri Shostakovich. • The music of Georg Kirkor (1910–1980) was also heavily influenced by “modern” compositional techniques of the West. • The name of Michail F. Russian Philharmonic Orchestra Samuel Friedmann: conductor BIZET: Carmen Suites 1 & 2 • L ’Arlésienne Suites 1 & 2 After Bizet’s death, Fritz Hoffmann fashioned two suites from the most popular musical material of Carmen, and thus the work has triumphed not only in the theater but upon the concert stage as well. • Bizet had already accepted the commission to write incidental music for Daudet’s melodrama L ’Arlésienne before he began work on Carmen. The music was poorly received at the premiere in 1872, and after only a few performances the play was discontinued. • Later, Bizet revised parts of his theatre music and formed them into the Suite No. 1, which was received ecstatically at its premiere. The Suite No. 2 was put together by Ernest Guiraud after Bizet’s death. • Samuel Friedmann was born in Kharkov in 1940. He graduated from the Kharkov Conservatory as a violinist in 1964, and from the Leningrad Conservatory as a conductor in 1966. • Until 1973, Friedmann performed throughout the Soviet Union. In 1973 he immigrated to Israel and began his international career. His concert activities have led him to the US and many European countries. •

Europa Symphony Wind Soloists Wolfgang Gröhs: conductor MOZART (arr. Triebensee): Don Giovanni (version for winds) Harmoniemusik (music for a small wind band) enjoyed a great vogue in Europe in the last quarter of the 18th and first quarter of the 19th centuries. J.Ch. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Rosetti, Krommer, Druschetzky, and numerous other composers of varying stature composed for the medium. • In Vienna, in particular, the nobility vied with one another in maintaining ensembles (usually pairs of oboes, clarinets, horns, and bassoons) of the finest available musicians. Transcriptions of popular operas of the day were especially in demand. • Joseph Triebensee was born in Wittengau, Bohemia in 1772, and received composition lessons from J.G. Albrechtsberger, who was Beethoven’s teacher. • Triebensee became leader of the octet of Prince Alois Lichtenstein in 1796. While in this post, he was very active as a composer and transcriber. • He succeeded Carl Maria von Weber in 1816 as director of the opera in Prague, retiring in 1838. He died there in 1846. • His transcriptions for winds are based on operas, symphonies, keyboard works, and ballets popular in his time. The date of the Don Giovanni transcription is unknown. • The Europa Symphony is composed of the best Romanian orchestra instrument players and soloists, and benefits from the support of the Austrian government. •

George Enescu Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra Cristian Mandeal: conductor BRAHMS: Symphony No. 3 in F, Op. 90 • Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a Brahms’s Third Symphony was written during the summer of 1883 in Wiesbaden in the Taunus Mountains, where Brahms liked to spend his holidays. Brahms made light of his new work when writing to his editor, Fritz Simrock: “You see, it is such a small symphony that it could be achieved within eight days.” • The Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn were composed during the summer of 1873 but previously existed in a version for two pianos (Op. 56b). The theme of the “Haydn Variations” originates from the second movement of a Divertimento for Winds. Today it is doubted that Joseph Haydn was its original composer. • The Romanian Philharmonic Society was founded in 1868. Its conductors have included significant figures in Romanian music not to mention Enescu himself, whose name the orchestra incorporated into its title in 1955. • The current conductor is Cristian Mandeal, who studied with both Karajan and Celibidache. He has conducted numerous major orchestras and more than forty world premieres. •

This recording comes from a revival at La Scala in 1991. • The Old Maid and the Thief was an opera Menotti wrote for radio in 1939. A theme from the opera inspired this 1953 composition rooted in Italian Renaissance organ style. • The seven Canti della Lontananza, or “Songs of Absence,” were written in 1967 and dedicated to Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. • Gian Carlo Menotti (b. 1911), an Italian-American who has dared to center his career on writing operas, won the Pulitzer Prize for Music among other awards. RAPHAELLA ALEOTTI

LUIGI BOCCHERINI

The Nuns of San Vito

Stabat Mater

Cappella Artemisia/Candace Smith: director

Barbara Vignudelli: soprano/Benedetto Marcello Chamber Orchestra/Flavio Emilio Scogna: conductor

ALEOTTI: 23 selections from Sacrae cantiones BOCCHERINI: Stabat Mater (first version, 1781) Raphaella Aleotti (1575-1646?), the first Italian nun to have published any music, was concert mistress of the Nuns of San Vito, a convent in Ferrara, Italy. Her collection of Sacrae cantiones was published in Venice in 1593. A contemporary described the nuns’ playing and singing “with such grace, and genteel manners, and such just and sonorous intonation of the voices” that it was almost unbelievable.

Order Date: July 19, 2007

Of all the settings of the traditional Stabat Mater text by the great composers, perhaps that by Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) is least known, a fact that seems perplexing today when there are countless recordings of the Stabat Mater (admittedly beautiful) by a much less famous composer, Pergolesi. The present work may indeed be Boccherini’s most important vocal composition, as he was best known for his instrumental works.

Air Power: The Story of the US Air Force traces the development of the United States Air Force (USAF) in the twentieth century. From uncertain beginnings as the Army Air Force in 1907, the USAF has grown to become the greatest instrument for projecting military power ever devised.

AIR POWER: THE STORY OF THE US AIR FORCE UP AND AWAY 1907–1942 In Up and Away 1907–1942, we follow the evolution of US air power from its birth in 1907 to its emergence during World War II as the greatest air force ever conceived. During this thirty-five year period, aviation technology grew by leaps and bounds, evolving from the simple bi-planes of the Wright Brothers to the giant bombers and fighter aircraft that would come to play a critical role in the conduct of the war.

THE BEGINNINGS 1907–1939 In this chapter, we examine the birth of the Army Air Force, its role during World War I, its subsequent contraction after the war, the struggle of the early advocates of military aviation to persuade the Pentagon to develop an air force, and the beginnings of the modern Air Force during the 1930s. The Beginnings: The Air Force in WWI • Retrenchment: The Post War Years • The Struggle for Recognition • The Gathering Storm • The Giant Stirs • Prelude to War

THE GLOBAL AIR WAR 1939–1942 In this chapter, we trace the development and use of air power in the first three years of World War II. This period saw a massive expansion of American air power, from approximately 200,000 men to more than 2 million, and from approximately 2,500 planes to more than 50,000. The World at War • Counterstrike: The Doolittle Raid • Holding the Line: Midway • The Tide Turns • North Africa: The End of the Beginning • The Giant Unleashed • Air War Over Germany • The 8th Air Force • Air War in the Pacific

AIR POWER: THE STORY OF THE US AIR FORCE THE GIANT UNLEASHED 1943–1960 In The Giant Unleashed 1943–1960, we trace the role of US air power during the last three years of World War II, its emergence as a global air power in 1946, and its subsequent role and strategy during the Cold War.

THE ROAD TO VICTORY 1943–1945 In this chapter, the strength of US air power reaches a new peak, to more than 2.4 million men and approximately 80,000 aircraft. Bombers took the war to the heartland of Germany and Japan in daily bombing raids, while the control of the air by US fighters provided essential cover to ground troops in the European and Pacific theaters of operations. In this chapter, we examine the role of US air power during the Cold War. In 1947, the Army Air Force was reorganized into a separate branch of the military known as the US Air Force. When war broke out in Korea, US air power played a pivotal role in slowing down the communist advance and defending the Pusan perimeter until reinforcements could arrive. During this period, the Strategic Air Command was organized as the primary instrument of American nuclear deterrence.
