STAN KENTON The Progressive Years: 1941–1947
CD: JAZ 1031 ( J )
• One of the great cult figures in the history of jazz, Stan Kenton provided his orchestra as a vehicle for brilliant, adventurous arrangers, and his highly original music gained him a devoted following • Kenton’s big band provided the progressive jazz of the 1940s as he mixed vocals and dance numbers with the cutting-edge music that most interested him • His big band, larger in number than most on the scene, stood apart from both the swing and the bebop eras, with less emphasis on swinging than on dense harmonies • On this remarkable collection, hear the cuts that most defined Kenton’s unique sound, gathered together on a single CD for the very first time, with remastered sound, detailed notes by Scott Yanow and rare historic photos

Se l l i n g P o i n ts • Billy Eckstine was one of the top singers to emerge in the late 1930s and 1940s, with a deep baritone voice that stood apart and became very influential on future jazz singers. He had a broader range than his contemporaries; most of the male singers in black swing orchestras either performed jump tunes or sang ballads with high voices • Eckstine used his deep, masculine voice with equally high skill on romantic ballads and jazz songs, and he was even an underrated scat singer. Eckstine also holds a special place in jazz history because of his leadership of one of the very first bebop orchestras • This important compilation contains 20 of Mr. B’s most beloved jazz recordings, heard together on a single CD for the very first time, with remastered sound, detailed notes by Scott Yanow and rare historic photos

CEES SLINGER with Ben Webster Then and Now: 1966 – 2000
• This album from Cees Slinger, a top choice for American artists touring Europe since the ‘60s, features 1996 recordings with Ben Webster and one from 2000 with his regular quartet. Both prove the extraordinary technique and sensitivity of this pianist • This material has never been available before – a real collector’s item! • Cees Slinger is an outstanding piano player who has recorded and performed with Bud Freeman, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Philly Joe Jones and Clifford Jordan, to name a few • “This was the first time we played these tunes with Ben, or even laid eyes on the music. Soon after this session we found out they were part of his more-or-less standard repertoire at that time. I played them many, many times with him during the years he lived in Amsterdam, and I can truthfully say that Ben Webster contributed enormously to my musical education. I loved him dearly.” — Cees Slinger

• Jazz master, pianist and arranger Ted Howe rocks on his second release on Summit, swingin’ the music of pop/rock icon Elton John with full aplomb into the jazz scene! • Joined by jazz superstars Joe Labarbera and John Patitucci, this disc delivers what Howe fans have learned to expect – the unexpected and the extraordinary! • Ted Howe invents and uncovers Elton’s jazz roots, from vintage favorites to obscure gems and contemporary classics • Originally hailing from Boston as a student of famed Berklee teacher Harry Smith, Howe eventually joined the Berklee faculty himself. He then went on to tour, conduct, arrange and play with some of the most famous names in show business, including Mel Torme, Bud Shank, Zoot Sims, Buddy DeFranco and Joe Williams, to name a few • Striding in as Fats Waller, then swinging with Nat King Cole-style block chords, Howe’s “Bennie and the Jets” blasts from the past to any generation • As a cha-cha, you’ll love “All the Girls Love Alice” too much to sit down, as subtle harmonic sophistication reinvents the story of “Alice” • Elton’s eloquent instrumental “Carla Etude” inspired Howe’s jazz waltz treatment à la Bill Evans. Sink into John Patitucci’s haunting arco bass and Joe Labarbera’s brushes and spice • Greasin’ in from big band to blues, “Philadelphia Freedom” takes on a new identity. But, believe it, Elton devotees can still sing along! • On “Border Patrol,” Patitucci’s exquisite upper register floats in a contemporary melodic presence...but gospel soon takes hold as this trio com-mu-ni-cates! • Howe’s translation of “Circle of Life”: mambo! Vibrant, fast-moving and fiery, this is an exciting, virtuostic display of Latin percussion, expanding the “Circle” beyond the jungle • Sinatra missed “Blues Eyes”...but you won’t, as Howe strides in again for a time travel back to the days of classic dark lounges for this romantic gem • Service to over 300 radio stations • Mailing to over 100 press/internet/digital radio outlets • Ads will run in JazzTimes • KEY MARKETS: Atlanta (Hometown). Baritone Gerhard Hüsch (1901–1984) was one of the most admired lieder interpreters of the 1930s, and later a famous teacher. Noted for his warm sound, flawless enunciation, and unwillingness to over-dramatize, Hüsch was considered one of the most intelligent singers of his era. He was the first to record both of Schubert’s song cycles, producing interpretations that remain benchmarks for many listeners. Historic recordings, 1935 and 1937.

Leo Slezak (1873 –1946), sometimes referred to as “the German Caruso,” was one of the most celebrated tenors at the Vienna Court Opera. His exquisitely beautiful lyric-dramatic voice was preserved on more than 450 record sides from 1901 until 1937. The present selections date from 1905 through 1928. RACHMANINOV: Vespers (“All Night Vigil”), Op. 37
Rachmaninov’s passionate setting of the Russian “All Night Vigil” is to the Eastern Orthodox liturgy what Bach’s B Minor Mass is to the West. Consulting Rachmaninov’s manuscripts and correspondence, and working with Russian language and cultural specialists, the virtuoso SWR Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Marcus Creed, has drawn upon every artistic source available to make this new recording of Rachmaninov’s transcendent Vespers.
RAVEL: Le tombeau de Couperin • Shéhérazade • Menuet antique • Tzigane • Daphnis et Chloé, Suites 1 & 2
“The two Daphnis Suites are quite distinctive…clear as a bell. Bour allows you to hear more of Ravel’s textural, harmonic, and melodic subtleties than just about anyone else, finding music where so many others merely make noise. The engineering, dating from 1967–77, is consistently good for its vintage. A true collector’s item.” — Classics Today

BRAHMS: Ein Deutsches Requiem
From the date of its premiere in 1868 to the present day, Brahms’s moving early masterwork has spoken to generations of listeners, and few conductors have approached this familiar score with the sense of awe and reverence shown by Carl Schuricht. A very special dimension of this CD is the magisterial performance of a young Hermann Prey. Historical recording, Stuttgart, November 7, 1959.
Classic historic performance (Stuttgart, 1955) from Carl Schuricht, a master German conductor. His unmannered performances were praised for their warmth and attention to detail. He was noted for his musical intelligence and especially his ability to transmit his understanding of a work directly to the players in his orchestra. His Bruckner interpretations, especially his later recordings, were among the most lucid and insightful readings ever committed to vinyl. Neither rhetorical nor labored, Schuricht allows Bruckner’s vision to take wing in this recording. SEPTEMBER 2005

Suite of Baroque pieces arranged “in the style of” the “son jarocho,” or traditional style of Veracruz, including the Canario, Cumbees, Folías, Puerto Rico de la Puebla, La Jotta, Fandango, and more
• This unique album features the artistry of Ensamble Continuo, a group of instrumentalists who play the Baroque guitar, theorbo, jarana, and other traditional Latin instruments in folk and classical music, arranged in traditional styles of the various Mexican states • The subtitle of this album, “The Baroque spirit in the sound of Veracruz,” gives an idea of the unique musical experience any listener will enjoy. The music of the old courts and the music of the peasantry blend in perfect harmony • Mexican music is a labyrinth of forms, genres, instruments, names, influences, languages, and even religions, all of which become intertwined to influence each other • In Mexico, music and instrument join and complement each other in the “son,” i.e., the characteristic style of each cultural area. Jalisco has its son de mariachi, Oaxaca its son istmeño, etc. In Veracruz, it is known as son jarocho; literally, “uncouth sound” • In this recording, the artists set out to interpret the music of the Hispanic Baroque guitar from a Mexican perspective, showing in this case how the Baroque and the “Veracruzano” are two faces of the same coin – distant in time, but close in essence

• Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1958, Yefim Bronfman emigrated to Israel at the age of 13 and later to the U.S., where he pursued his training at the Juilliard School and the Marlboro and Curtis Institutes under Rudolf Serkin, Rudolf Firkusny and Leon Fleisher • Bronfman celebrated his international debut in 1975, accompanied by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Zubin Mehta. He soon acquired an excellent reputation as a pianist on the stages of the world’s major concert halls • Highlights of recent years include concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and the Vienna Philharmonic • Yefim Bronfman also gives regular piano recitals in the leading concert halls of the United States, Europe and the Far East. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with the Emerson, Cleveland, Guarneri and Juilliard Quartets • Other long-term musical partners include Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Lynn Harrell, Shlomo Mintz and Pinchas Zukerman. Yefim Bronfman became an American citizen in 1989 • Born in 1936, American conductor David Zinman has risen to the pinnacle of his career in the last decade. After bringing the Baltimore Symphony to major status, he became musical director of the Aspen Music Festival and then took the helm of Zurich’s beloved Tonhalle Orchestra • Zinman’s discography of some 100 recordings have won five Grammys and two Grands Prix du Disque • Founded in 1868, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra is Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra. Today it gives over 90 concerts each season featuring more than 50 different programs with the world’s leading conductors and solo artists • David Zinman sees Piano Concerto No. 3 – the only one in a minor key – as a kind of “Eroica” for piano and orchestra. Just as Beethoven opened the door to an entirely new symphonic world with his third symphony, the Eroica, he also broke new ground with his third piano concerto • For Yefim Bronfman, the Fourth is the concerto “with the broadest emotional spectrum, and at the same time possibly the most dramatic”

Felix MENDELSSOHN String Quartets, Vol. 2
CD: ANO 577440 (C)
• A total of eight works by Mendelssohn have come down to us which can be ascribed to the genre of the string quartet. Already in his first proper quartets we can see that the young composer was not only building on the classical models of Haydn and Mozart, but had also made an intensive and creative study of Beethoven’s late quartet works • The Henschel Quartet have been awarded a number of prizes for their interpretations, e.g. for their much-recognized recording of Ginastera string quartets for Arte Nova • The quartet performs regularly in prestigious chamber music cycles worldwide and is a guest at numerous renowned music festivals • The Henschel Quartet has won numerous prizes since 1995, and their highly-acclaimed stand-in for the Juilliard Quartet in London’s Wigmore Hall, broadcasted by the BBC, led to international recognition as one of today’s finest chamber ensembles • “Performances of character and individuality…an approach that uncovers essential features of [Mendelssohn’s] style and personality.” — Gramophone

• Franz Berwald (1796–1868) and his music were largely forgotten until the late 20th century, when his works, especially his four symphonies, were revived with overwhelming success • After decades of almost total neglect, Berwald has come to be considered what one modern critic called “the most individual and significant musical personality Sweden has ever produced” • Although Berwald used isolated features of Nordic folk music, he was more of a romantic nationalist and also differed clearly from his national contemporaries who deferred to Liszt and Wagner in matters of tonal idiom, form and structure • Conductor David Montgomery was the last pupil of the legendary conductor René Leibowitz. He made his debut in 1969 at the Schönberg Festival in Lyon. That same year, he began his work as Associate Conductor with the Santa Fe Opera. Numerous appearances as conductor and pianist in Europe and the United States followed • Montgomery’s film debut took place at Columbia Pictures as conductor in 1993, and behind the scenes as historical consultant for Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence

Leosˇ JANÁCˇEK Sinfonietta Christiane Edinger, violin/SWR Symphony Orchestra/Václav Neumann, conductor JANÁCˇEK: Sinfonietta, Op. 60 • Violin Concerto • Suite from the opera “The Cunning Little Vixen”
Janácˇek first achieved worldwide fame with his Sinfonietta of 1926, written when he was already 72 years old. Its brilliant, tuneful originality has enabled it to become the chief work of this long under-appreciated genius to take its place in the standard repertory. This recording also presents two other orchestral masterpieces: the Violin Concerto, subtitled “Pilgrimage of the Soul,” which was originally written in 1926 and reconstructed in 1988; and the orchestral suite from his fanciful opera The Cunning Little Vixen. The eminent Czech conductor Václav Neumann is joined here in the concerto by the brilliant violinist Christiane Edinger, who today performs with the leading orchestras.

Sviatoslav Richter, piano LISZT: Sonata in B minor • Funérailles, from Harmonies poètiques et religieuses • Transcendental Etudes Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10 & 11
• Sviatoslav Richter (1915–1997) is numbered among the finest pianists of the 20th century. He exhibited all the best traits of the Russian school of playing: dynamism, lyrical expressiveness, and a wide range of tonal color • Combined with his typical thoughtfulness, subtlety, and attention to style, these qualities assured Richter of a distinguished international career. For many listeners, indeed, he was the paragon of balance among virtuosos, the pianist who exhibited the greatest equality among the elements across his musical palette • The West first became aware of Richter through recordings made in the 1950s. He was not allowed to tour the U.S. until 1960, and then created a sensation. Touring, however, was not Richter’s forte. He preferred an intimate concert venue, and in later years took to playing in small, darkened halls, sometimes with only a small lamp lighting his piano • The centerpiece of this release, the B minor Sonata of Liszt, was recorded live in Carnegie Hall on May 18, 1965 when Richter was at the height of his powers, and only one week after Vladimir Horowitz had appeared on the same stage for his famous “Return Recital” • Funérailles recorded Budapest, 1958; Etudes, Moscow, 1956

• The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is a standard Russian Orthodox liturgical text; Rachmaninov used it for the earlier of his two great sacred choral works (the other is the Vespers, or “All-Night Vigil”) • This work of symphonic proportions was composed in less than three weeks. After it was completed, Rachmaninov wrote to a friend that he had been carried away by the project and that it had been a long time since he had written music with such pleasure • Vladimir Minin was born in St. Petersburg in 1929, where he received his early musical training singing in the boys’ choir. Minin went on to direct choirs throughout the former Soviet Union before founding the Moscow Chamber Choir in the early 1970s • With strong ties to various contemporary composers, Minin and his singers have premiered many works and have performed a wide range of repertory • In 2000, the choir recorded Rachmaninov’s The Bells and Taneyev’s cantata St. John of Damascus with Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra for Deutsche Grammophon. The Moscow Chamber Choir can also be heard on a disc of Russian orchestral favorites in this series

• As a youth, Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978) absorbed the folk music of his native Armenia and the neighboring states of Georgia and Azerbaijan, and these elements found their way into his rhythmically and melodically vivid compositions • Khachaturian composed incidental music to Lope de Vega’s comedic play La viuda de Valencia (The Widow of Valencia) for a 1940 Moscow production. It is one of his most colorful and delightful scores, and he later created a suite of six brief excerpts • The following year, Khachaturian was commissioned to compose incidental music for a revival of Mikhail Lermontov’s Masquerade in celebration of the author’s centenary. It has remained one of his most successful works • Azerbaijani-born conductor Veronica Dudarova was appointed conductor of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in 1960, a position she held for almost four decades • In 1991, Ms. Dudarova founded the State Symphony Orchestra. Winner of the highest awards both from the former Soviet Union and the current Russian Federation, she appears as guest conductor with orchestras throughout the world

USSR Symphony Orchestra/Evgeni Svetlanov, conductor TCHAIKOVSKY: Swan Lake Suite, Op. 20a • The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a
• Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet, commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and premiered in March of 1877. Although wildly popular today, Swan Lake was very coolly received at first, partly because the performance was poorly choreographed and performed • It was not until the great choreographer Marius Petipa revived Swan Lake in 1895, two years after the composer’s death, that the ballet achieved the success it deserved, and it has been a central part of the repertoire ever since • The Nutcracker was Tchaikovsky’s third ballet and last completed stage work. The scenario was based on a fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann and meticulously reworked by Petipa, who co-choreographed the premiere production in December of 1892. Again, the initial reception was cool, but it wasn’t long before The Nutcracker joined Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty as repertory staples • Evgeni Svetlanov (1928-2002) was one of the many distinguished graduates of the Moscow Conservatory • Under his direction, the USSR Symphony Orchestra became one of Russia’s finest ensembles, and is particularly notable for its traditional Slavic sound. Svetlanov recorded widely, and his interpretations are prized for their color and vitality

Nikolai RIMSKY-KORSAKOV
• Western audiences know Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov as a composer of orchestral showpieces such as Scheherazade. Russian audiences, on the other hand, know him equally well as an opera composer • Like many opera composers who sought to develop a wider audience, Rimsky-Korsakov mined his operas for music that would be suitable in a purely orchestral setting. The result is a series of marvelous suites – though even some of these are real rarities! • The best-known of the three suites on this album is probably Le coq d’or (The Golden Cockerel), Rimsky-Korsakov’s last opera (1909) and his biggest success outside of Russia • The Snow Maiden was Rimsky-Korsakov’s fourth opera, premiered in St. Petersburg in 1882. Later, the composer would deem it his finest work. It includes the popular “Dance of the Tumblers” • Least familiar is Pan Voyevoda (1903), an opera on a Polish historical subject which makes use of some authentic folk songs • Included as an encore is Rimsky-Korsakov’s infectious military setting of the Russian folk song Dubinushka • Along with Kondrashin and Rozhdestvensky, Evgeni Svetlanov was one of the three most famous Russian conductors of the later 20th century

CLASSICAL Martino BITTI & Nicola Francesco HAIM Violin Sonatas Alessandra Talamo, violin/Ensemble Respighi BITTI: 8 Sonatas for violin & basso continuo • HAIM: 4 Sonatas for violin & basso continuo
Martino Bitti (1656–1743), a fine violinist and composer among the ranks of those succeeding Corelli, is nearly forgotten today. Most of his career was spent in the court of Florence, where he was one of the originators of the oratorio form. His surviving works, including several violin sonatas, were not exhumed until the 1950s, when an Italian musicologist pronounced his music “of admirable taste and extreme naturalness,” with a “spontaneous and rich vein of melodic invention.” Little remains of the music of Nicola Francesco Haim (1678 –1729), an Italian composer of German parents, who is better remembered today for writing a number of librettos for Handel’s operas. The director of the Tiepolo Baroque Orchestra, Vania Pedronetto, notes that “The Tiepolo Orchestra and the Red Priest have a common aim in life – to serve words. Even when there are no words and the language is music. So do not expect the sound in this recording to be monotonous and singsong, or for us to attempt to impress you with screams and sudden bursts of chaotic sound. In his sacred music, Vivaldi uses a heartfelt, ethereal language, which is never dull, but subtly ironical and at times even impassioned.”

Giovanni Battista BASSANI Balletti, Correnti, Gighe e Sarabande, Op. 1
ORDER DATE AUGUST 26, 2005
Ensemble Armonico Cimento/Marco Ghirotti, harpsichord & director BASSANI: 12 Sonatas, Op. 1 (Bologna, 1677)
Each of these unique sonatas consists of four movements in the same sequence: balletto, corrente, giga and sarabanda – four favorite dance forms of the Baroque. The composer Bassani (ca. 1647–1716) worked back and forth in the musical establishments of Ferrara and Bologna. His Op. 1 “sonatas” are really instrumental suites. His decision to end each one with a sarabanda was not followed by subsequent performers, almost all of whom preferred the giga as a conclusion. Ensemble Armonico Cimento is one of Italy’s numerous successful Early Music groups, with members drawn from the famous Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Royal College of Music in London, and the École de Musique Ancienne in Geneva, Switzerland.

• A full-length opera and song recital by the late, great tenor, taped in color in 1971 • This DVD also contains two bonus tracks that will thrill any serious opera fan: two radio interviews with Franco Corelli by Stefan Zucker from the early 1990’s (one also includes bass Jerome Hines). These bonus tracks are jam-packed with analyses of singers and singing! • Bonus 1: the radio interview of Franco Corelli and Jerome Hines by Stefan Zucker of March 3, 1990. (3 hrs., 30 mins.) Among the topics: Franco Corelli compares Maria Callas and Magda Olivero. The true story of Callas’s “Rome walkout.” Discussion about Maria Caniglia, Beniamino Gigli, Enrico Caruso, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Mario Del Monaco, Jussi Björling, Aureliano Pertile. American vs. Italian vs. German style. Demonstrations of different kinds of portamento. Corelli justifies booing. The claque at the Met: who paid them to cheer, who paid them to boo, who paid them not to boo. Bitchy Leyla Gencer. When Italians come to America, they always try to be temperamental. Corelli’s high D. Lina Pagliughi, Robert Merrill, Cornell MacNeil, Giangiacomo Guelfi, Gino Bechi. • Bonus 2: the radio interview of Franco Corelli by Stefan Zucker of March 30, 1991. (2 hrs., 30 mins.) An in-depth critique of Aureliano Pertile by Corelli, with recorded arias and ensembles from Lohengrin, Otello, Ballo, Luisa Miller, Forza, Iris, Manon Lescaut, Pagliacci, songs by Denza, Rotoli and Tosti. Also, Corelli on Edita Gruberova and Chris Merritt in I puritani. Mr. and Mrs. Corelli have an on-air fight. • This DVD has PCM audio rather than compressed formats such as Dolby Digital, which retain only a fraction of the original sound • “Franco is very much himself. He sings to the audience as he sang to me in his living room – with the same gestures and mannerisms. And they love it! He flings himself into the encores with wild abandon. Gives spinal chills. The most personality of any Corelli video. Many of his fans say it is their favorite.” — Stefan Zucker • Bel Canto Society DVDs, videos and CDs are advertised and reviewed in Gramophone, International Record Review, Classics Today, Classical CD Review, Classic Record Collector and Opera News

Zoltán KODÁLY Orchestral Works Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra/Adam Fischer, conductor KODÁLY: Háry János Suite • Dances of Galánta • Variations on a Hungarian Folksong “The Peacock”
Previously available, this superb recording of 20th-century Hungarian masterworks is now repackaged and offered at mid-price. Adam Fischer, acclaimed for his complete Haydn Symphony cycle on Nimbus, is the conductor of the excellent Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra. Zoltán Kodály was second in esteem only to Béla Bartók among modern Hungarian composers; his colorful orchestral works are perhaps more accessible than Bartók’s, especially the delightfully tuneful suite from his brilliant comic opera Háry János, the story of an outrageous braggart. The “Viennese Musical Clock” section was used for 36 years as the theme of The Vocal Scene, George Jellinek’s popular public radio show.

César Vezzani was a true tenor-fort, equivalent of the Italian lyrico-spinto, and therefore assigned the demi-caractère roles which demand a wide vocal range. In addition, Vezzani’s brilliant top notes place him firmly in a line of French dramatic tenors who can claim their heritage from Gilbert-Louis Duprez (1806 –1896). Considered in France to have been the most important dramatic tenor performing between the World Wars, Vezzani spent his entire career in regional opera houses, never performed at the Paris Opera, and consequently is without a present-day reputation. Nearly 80 minutes of very rare historic recordings on this single disc!

New releases from GRAND TIER! Opera d’Oro’s Grand Tier series presents the best-selling Opera d’Oro titles with libretto and deluxe new packaging at mid-price! The Opera d’Oro series has been an unqualified success in the budget category. Now, in response to popular demand, the best titles are being reissued with complete librettos in the original languages and fresh new English translations; stimulating essays on the operas by eminent writers on music; and striking artwork commissioned from Rafal Olbinski.
“Verrett is quite interesting. Hers has always been an individual timbre, perhaps not beautiful in the conventional sense, but unique, and possessing an innate animal intensity that can snarl or purr. Almost at odds with this seething quality is Verrett’s refinement as a musician, more apparent back in 1973, when she was in her prime, than in later outings... this sounds like a carefully prepared production, in which nothing is handled carelessly, everyone on his toes and in fine form. The sound is wonderfully clear, present and undistorted.” — Opera News Shirley Verrett, Plácido Domingo, José Van Dam, Kiri Te Kanawa, Richard Van Allen, Thomas Allen, et al, vocal soloists/Covent Garden Orchestra & Chorus/Sir George Solti, conductor BIZET: Carmen (complete opera)

“Geraint Evans’ Wozzeck is a powerful, tragic presence… Balancing clarity and madness, power and impotence, nobility and crudeness, it is one of the great portrayals of the role on disc. It is Böhm’s conducting that sets this performance apart, however, thanks in large part to the Vienna Philharmonic, which has rarely been captured playing with such violence and grit…Böhm seems to have the final catastrophe in sight from the very beginning, and each climax is more harrowing than the last…do not pass up this inexpensive release; it is an extraordinary document not to be missed.” —Gramophone

SMETANA: Dalibor
DONIZETTI: Maria Padilla (complete opera)
Maria Padilla was one of the most successful of Donizetti’s mature later operas in his own time, but curiously it has not been in the forefront of the Donizetti revival that has flourished over the past few decades. First mounted during Carnival season in Milan in 1841, it remained popular for about 17 years, and then sank out of sight until this London revival in 1973. Every Donizetti fan will want this great budget recording!
An exciting performance of Smetana’s historic-tragic operatic masteripiece, Dalibor, a romantic tale of chivalry and patriotism. Gustav Mahler first conducted Dalibor in Vienna and this probably represents his performing version. Never before available at budget price, this opera stars the legendary soprano Leonie Rysanek along with her younger sister, Lotte, also a fine singer, and the heroic tenor Ludovic Spiess who will surprise those who haven’t heard of him! Live performance in German, 1969.

“ This set was recorded live in Verona in 1970, when Plácido Domingo was still barely known, and it captures him in fantastically exciting form – if you want proof that he’s one of the last century’s greatest voices, just listen to this.” —Rough Guide to Opera This thrilling live performance of Manon Lescaut stars tenor Plácido Domingo near the beginning of his career, in the youthful prime of his voice, and legendary soprano Magda Olivero as the young Manon.
First performed on May 16, 1829 in Parma, Zaira was a resounding failure and never given again in Bellini’s lifetime, though the composer re-used parts of it in later works such as I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and even Norma. Today, it is evident that the opera has a great deal of beautiful music in it and that the initial rude reception had more to do with audience politics than intrinsic worth. In any case, any Bellini lover will have to have this rare recording starring the great Renata Scotto, at budget price! SEPTEMBER 2005

HORROR NEW LABEL! “One of the more memorable low-budget 1950s monster movies, The Blob deals with a gelatinous alien mass that gobbles up a small town, growing bigger as it feeds on human beings. Steve McQueen is the good-hearted juvenile delinquent who tries to warn the adults, but they don’t listen. This Pennsylvania-shot chiller has a number of well-done scenes, including an attack on a movie theater showing Daughter of Horror, as well as the standard drag racing and other teenage hijinks. Kitschy, but fun.” — All Movie Guide Fe at u r e d A rt i sts Steve McQueen/Aneta Corseaut/Irvin S. Yeaworth, director

• One of the most memorable giant monster films of the ‘50s, this sci-fi classic follows the story of a shapeless, flesh-dissolving mass that emerges from a fallen meteor and grows larger with each victim it absorbs • At first scoffed at by the police, teenage hero Steve Andrews (Steve McQueen in his first lead role) and his girlfriend Jane Martin (Aneta Corseaut from The Andy Griffith Show) enlist their drag-racing buddies to alert the town to the danger before being trapped in a diner that is completely enveloped by the Blob in the film’s spectacular climax • Featuring a hit theme song by Burt Bacharach & Hal David and special effects that are still impressive today, The Blob rocketed Steve McQueen to fame • A key influence for many special effects-based horror films! • Widescreen; Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound
“Just the thing for spooky Halloween-night viewing, this good-looking film from director Harald Reinl tells the story of the horrible Count Regula (Christopher Lee), who murdered a dozen virgins and drained their blood. For these heinous crimes, he was drawn and quartered. Thirty-five years later, his undead servant resurrects him for revenge and a 13th victim (pretty Karin Dor), whose blood will give Regula eternal life. Some chilling visuals (a haunted forest with corpses growing out of trees, swarms of vultures in the castle corridors, the obligatory pendulum) and assorted creepy crawlies (pits of snakes, spiders and scorpions) make this a real old-fashioned scare-fest, and it is not too bloody for horror-hungry children. Very loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe’s Pit and the Pendulum, this film delivers on its promise to frighten.” — All Movie Guide Fe at u r e d A rt i sts Christopher Lee/Karin Dor/Lex Barker/Harald Reinl, director

“A composer who has experienced the sweet taste of Broadway success…” — PBS.org “Over the course of an incredibly diverse and successful career, New York-born composer Charles Strouse’s musical star has shone very brightly over Broadway, Hollywood, television, pop and concert music for 45 years. The muchhonored Strouse is best known for his legendary Tony-winning Broadway musicals Bye Bye Birdie, Applause and Annie…[and] songs from those shows have become tried and true American standards!” — ASCAP.com “Musical theater fans packed Merkin Concert Hall last Monday night to enjoy the sweet, hum-able tunes of longtime Broadway composer Charles Strouse…From 1960 to the present, Strouse’s Broadway shows have included Bye Bye Birdie and Annie, two of the biggest hits of all time…the event also provided a valuable opportunity to hear many of Charles Strouse’s lesser-known songs…hidden in the American musical theater songbook, these songs are worth discovering.” — Theatre Scene

• A delightful tango album that exudes the rich history and sensuality of exotic Buenos Aires! Carlos Garcia, who has been steeped in the music of his homeland for decades, credits the remarkable atmosphere of this legendary city for infusing his music with the true essence of the tango • Garcia, who directs the Tango All-Stars on this recording, was born in 1914. He began his musical career as a pianist during the 1930s, gradually gearing his performances more and more towards the traditional music of Argentina • After he returned to the world of tango, he began conducting studio orchestras and accompanied many celebrated singers. In addition to tango, Garcia’s musical interests have expanded to involve him in such diverse and eclectic fields as jazz and Hawaiian music. Such influences have given his style a rich, broad appeal • Garcia once stated in an interview that of all the musical genres in which he had worked, it was the tango that gave him the fullest arena in which to exercise his abilities. He claimed that when working in the realm of the tango, his arrangements seemed to flow with the utmost ease and creativity, and he believed that the remarkable atmosphere of Buenos Aires deserved credit for his fluent and natural music

Se l l i n g P o i n ts • This is the first on-location recording of the folk music of the Garifuna people. The songs reflect the varied history of the nomadic Garifuna, who constantly roam from their home of San Vicente Island • Music and dance are at the core of their lives; their music features the rhythmic dynamism and diversity that derives from their African heritage, along with repeated melodies of inherent beauty and simplicity, accompanied by a variety of traditional drums, tortoise shells, clappers, maracas and conch shells, which are used as wind instruments • Aurelio Martinez and Lucas Caldren formed Lita Ariran in Honduras in 1989 with the goal of reinforcing the cultural identity of the Garifuna. Due to modern economic conditions, many of these people have been leaving their villages and their country to seek better opportunities in the U.S. and elsewhere • Lita Ariran are struggling to preserve the gradually disappearing traditions in light of these circumstances, playing a valiant role as the irreplaceable successors of the traditional arts of their people

Se l l i n g P o i n ts • A passionate exploration of traditional Gypsy violin music featuring Laszlo Berki at the head of an authentic ensemble of violins, bass, clarinet and cimbalom! • This CD contains mainly traditional pieces at the heart of the Gypsy repertoire. These perfectly coordinated ensemble pieces center around the first violinist, who leads the ensemble. In their performance of the czardas, the slow opening lassu section is played with a deeply moving lyricism and pathos, and is followed by the friss section, in which the tempo picks up as the performers play fiercely passionate rhythms with flawlessly coordinated dynamism. Since these orchestras rarely use musical notation, and improvise according to their mood and that of the audience, the same piece will never be played in the same way, either by different ensembles or even by the same ensemble on different occasions • Laszlo Berki is among the most renowned exponents of the Gypsy violin. As well as working with his own ensemble, which performs on this recording, he is active with the National Folklore Ensemble and a one hundred-piece Gypsy orchestra. In 1992, the same year in which this project was recorded, Berki organized an international festival of the Gypsy arts. This festival was an important event which presented the Gypsies — a people with a long-established reputation as nomads — the opportunity to come together and cement the cultural and ethnic bonds which link them • An innovative spirit with a strong grasp of the traditional, Berki believes that in order for Gypsy violinists to present an always- challenging performance, they should not blindly follow tradition, but should constantly strive to play their music in an inspired and uninhibited manner, a philosophy which is strikingly manifest on this recording

• The Republic of Korea is a country where shamanism continues to play a completely natural part in everyday life. Shamans perform a wide variety of rites all year round in the context of seasonal functions, festivities, and religious ceremonies • Kim Suk Chul is the leader of a group of performing artists of shamanist background active all along the eastern seaboard of South Korea, from the cities of Gangneung in the north to Pusan in the south. The Korean government has recognized him as an Important Intangible Cultural Property (No. 82) • Korean shamans are by no means the mystical beings one might envisage. They serve as mediums between the gods, liberating people’s conscious awareness and spirits through their vocal and instrumental performance. The shamans of the eastern seaboard present performances with unparalleled polyrythmic qualities using instruments such as the gwaengwari and jing gongs, the jegum cymbals, the double-headed hourglass drum janggu, and the double-reed woodwind hojok. At shamanistic ceremonies, the musicians may be called on to play and dance for several days on end; this means that they have to master more than one hundred rhythm patterns, both individually and as an ensemble • This disc presents three sprawling, epic songs containing the essence of the shamanist music of Korea’s eastern seaboard SEPTEMBER 2005

• The 20th in the critically acclaimed Ethiopiques series, Live in Addis takes Ethiopiques – and Ethio-jazz – to a new place. The Either/Orchestra, a 10-piece jazz orchestra based in Boston, are among the first non-Ethiopian artists to become serious interpreters of Ethiopian music over the last eight years • Recorded live at a historic concert – the first performance by a U.S. big band in Ethiopia since Duke Ellington in 1973 • The results blend state-of-the-art playing and an exotic, captivating Ethiopian program into a kind of Buena Vista Social Club Addis-style, featuring several Ethiopian elder statesmen performing with a big band for the first time since the 1960s, and two younger singers doing so for the first time • Inspired by the great Ethiopian pop and jazz of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the E/O has brought the full array of modern jazz and Afro-Cuban innovations to an Ethiopian repertoire • The E/O’s previous release, Neo-Modernism, went to #2 in the CMJ Jazz Chart; all of its releases have made the Top Ten • Extensive U.S. tours throughout 2005 • Large mailing to public and college radio • Independent publicist will promote the E/O 20th Anniversary Season • KEY MARKETS: Boston, New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Iowa City, Des Moines, Cleveland, Madison and Ann Arbor
