A tantalizing fusion of ancient and modern, Byrdland explores the world of the Renaissance song accompanied by a modern-day saxophone quartet. • All the songs on the disc were written by the great composers working in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. • World-famous countertenor Lawrence Zazzo was inspired to record these songs with saxophones after performing at a friend’s wedding in San Francisco where the only accompaniment available was a saxophone quartet. In London during the second half of the eighteenth century, there was already an established local tradition of printed music containing keyboard reductions of concert repertoire. One such print was Geminiani’s “Celebrated Six Concertos, as performed by Mr. Cramer.” This was Wilhelm Cramer (1746-1799), a precocious prodigy who had studied under Stamitz and was already a member of the famous orchestra in Mannheim. He was considered one of England’s most brilliant violinists for some twenty years.

ˇ Antonín DVOrÁK Piano Quintets Arcus Ensemble ˇ DVORÁK: Piano Quintet in A, Op. 5 • Piano Quintet in A, Op. 81 Along with Smetana, Antonín Dvorák ˇ is the outstanding example of Czech nationalism in nineteenth-century music, albeit allied to Germanic compositional techniques. • In 1988, five young Viennese artists founded the Arcus Ensemble, a group comprised of a piano and string quartet. Their common interest, besides the standard repertoire, lies in the investigation of seldom-played compositions and unusual configurations. • The ensemble frequently requires the participation of other instrumentalists such as wind players, percussionists, or singers, thus forming many different chamber music groups able to perform an almost unlimited number of works of all styles. • Their main focus is on repertoire of the twentieth century, as well as works by contemporary composers that have been written for the ensemble. •

Maurizio Croci performs on two Sebald Manderscheidt organs in Switzerland, of great interest as examples of historic organ building. The 1657 instrument is in St. Nicolas Cathedral, and the 1667 organ in the chapel of Hôpital des Bourgeoises. The prize-winning artist was born in Italy in 1970 and has made three previous recordings.

Respighi (1879-1936) is known to the wide public for his colorful orchestral tone poems, but he had a particular fondness throughout his career for the art song, some with orchestral accompaniment, others (like those recorded here) for voice and piano. These were composed at the height of his creative period, from 1914 to 1920.

Gérard Grisey (1946-1998), a giant of contemporary music in France, was one of the prime movers of what came to be known as the “Spectral Movement,” or Spectralism, in the mid-1970s. This genre emphasizes the pitch, timbre, and rhythm of individual sounds in composition, usually employing computer analysis of sound waves and their evolution through time. This approach was developed at IRCAM in Paris and gradually became a major influence in avantgarde music.

Frédéric Zigante, one of the world’s pre-eminent and most-recorded classical guitarists, was born in 1961 in France and graduated from the Verdi Conservatory of Milan. He was a pupil of Alirio Diaz and Alexandre Lagoya, among others. He now gives recitals in Italy and abroad, and has recorded nearly twenty CDs, including several world premieres. This album of Bach’s complete lute music, transcribed for guitar, establishes him as one of the modern masters of this immortal repertoire.
