— Jazziz

Se l l i n g P o i n ts Se l l i n g P o i n ts From 1994, the first Tiny Bell Trio release (featuring Brad Shepik on guitar and Jim Black on drums) is a classic of New York downtown jazz, and among the first to work with Balkan dance rhythms. Fine playing, great tunes (from originals to arrangements of Weill, Kosma & Tailleferre as well as a Hungarian czardas) and superb sound quality; described as “an early glimpse of Douglas’s unconventional brilliance” by All Music Guide.

Wayne Horvitz’s first “Zony Mash unplugged” record (originally released in 2000 as American Bandstand), with Horvitz on piano plus Tim Young (guitars), Keith Lowe (bass) and Andy Roth (drums). Unlike Zony Mash, though, this band still tours! Blends introspective chamber jazz and Satie-like impressionism with Americana, waltzes, a tango, and even surf guitar. Received 4½ stars for an abundance of “warmth and sensitivity” by All Music Guide.

“A fantastic-sounding record…the music is laid-back and a bit melancholy, with a layered folk-rock eclecticism…time and again it manages to be both tuneful and highly angular in the same breath.”

“Jensson holds tight rein on his bandmates, always keeping things within melodic bounds…such contrasts [make] this album so compelling and interesting musically.” — Soundstage.com

— All Music Guide

Se l l i n g P o i n ts Se l l i n g P o i n ts The follow-up to Forever features a similar mix of memorable melodies and alert interplay in even better audiophile sound. Received 4 stars from All Music Guide and called “accessible and highly original” by Audiophile Audition.

OCTOBER 2005

This quintet date by Icelandic guitarist Jensson (a mainstay of Jim Black’s AlasNoAxis) was rather overlooked on its initial release in 2004. A great band (Black, Herb Robertson, Andrew D’Angelo and Trevor Dunn) interprets his quirky, sometimes lyrical compositions with avant-jazz/rock fire. Called “a joy throughout” and “a superb release and a boon for fans” by One Final Note, this release received 4½ stars from All Music Guide.

THE MILLS BROTHERS The Best of the Early Mills Brothers: 1931–1942 CD: JAZ 2011 ( J)

• Although today the Mills Brothers are most remembered for their later performances that helped define middle-of-the-road pop music, in the 1930s they were one of the most innovative jazz vocal groups ever to record • Their ability to imitate instruments and sound like a full combo while utilizing only an acoustic guitar was unprecedented, and gave them a unique and exciting sound. Early vaudeville performances and radio broadcasts led to big breaks in New York, and by the early 1930s they were world famous recording stars, and were appearing in several movies • Here are the key recordings of these great vocalists from the period of their peak creativity and uniqueness, gathered together on a single CD for the very first time, with remastered sound, detailed notes by Scott Yanow and rare historic photos

“These aren’t your father’s classical musicians. They’re young, dressed-down and prefer Depeche Mode to, say, the church choir.” — Dallas Observer “Determined to provide an alternative to what he calls the ‘museum attitude’ in classical music, Landson set out to write a different kind of classical music that appeals to more people...Landson combines ageless techniques of the classical genre – development of thematic material and structural cohesion, for example – with a distinctly contemporary edge. But not contemporary as in Elliott Carter or John Adams... ‘It’s a lot more pop- or rock-oriented,’ Landson says.” — Baltimore Sun Neo Camerata (Vesselin Demirv, 1st violin/Jane Hunt, 2nd violin/Mark Landson, viola and composer of all album material/John Landefeld, cello/Jeanne Schumann, piano) Travels, for string quartet • Dream on a Cirrus Sky, for cello & piano • Vokante Heroa, for string quartet & piano

• Neo Camerata has been described as “changing the future of chamber music” with a revolutionary combination of virtuoso musicians, riveting original music, and a piquant sense of humor – creating what critics have called a “genre busting,” “technically impressive,” “emotionally stirring,” and “totally cool and amazing” experience • Since their debut performance in January 2004, the group has been going where no other classical group has ventured, performing their original new classical music on the same bill as pop acts like Bobby McFerrin, singer/songwriter Ben Jelen (whose 2004 effort on Maverick Records Give It All Away debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Heat-Seekers Chart), Rejane Magloire (Technotronic) and in places like New York’s Cutting Room, the Cannes Film Festival and Sir Elton John’s Vienna Life Ball • All of the music on the album was composed by the group’s founder and violist, Mark Landson. His music is at once very emotional and intelligent, and has been self-described as “a journey of mind and emotion” • This unique album appeals to a broad spectrum of classical listeners as well as those on the periphery of classical music. It is the first album of truly classical music that can be considered classical-crossover • Press promotion in cooperation with Allegro press program. CLASSICAL Gaetano PUGNANI Trios & Sonatas for 2 Violins Ensemble L’Astrée PUGNANI: Trio for 2 Violins, Op. 1, Nos. 1 & 6 • Sonatas for 2 Violins, Op. 4, Nos. 1 & 3, Op. 5, Nos. 2 & 3

Gaetano Pugnani (1731–1798) was a successful opera composer, but music publishers had a particular enthusiasm for his chamber works for their exceptional quality. His trios, duets and sonatas were fought over by publishers in London, Paris and Amsterdam, largely because he experimented with what were then considered cutting-edge compositional devices and forms. In his trios and sonatas for two violins, the expressive nature of the proceedings and Pugnani’s obviously serious approach ensured he did not treat his chamber works as throwaway background music for polite society gatherings, and that he never indulged in the rather fatuous elegance so common among exponents of the stile galante.

Antonio VIVALDI Concertos for Solo Lute Paolo Cherici, lute VIVALDI: Lute Concertos Rv.108, 93, 425, 230 & 532 • Lute Trios Rv.82 & 85

These are transcriptions by lutenist Paolo Cherici for solo lute of well-known instrumental concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, perhaps the most prolific and popular of Baroque concerto writers. The artist explains that “although downsizing material intended for a number of instruments to just one – the lute – was both complex and difficult, I am thoroughly convinced of the results and do not believe Vivaldi’s actual music is in any way compromised. Of course, there is not the body and variety of tone color that can be achieved with orchestral forces, but this is more than compensated for by the lute’s combination of discretion, refinement and wealth of resonant timbres.” CD: STV 33676 (R) File Under: Classical

His music also exhibits influences of Maderna, Boulez and Cage, and has been remarked upon for its thorough assimilation of most of the elements of avant-garde music since about 1950. This is the first volume in a projected Donatoni Edition from Stradivarius in honor of this important 20th-century Italian composer and teacher. These works span a period of 26 years and exhibit various aspects of Donatoni’s art.

“ This madcap comedy is all the funnier to a British watcher for being set in London – but not London as we ever knew it. A disreputable journalist plans to rebuild the city’s bombed Italian church by putting on an opera concert at Covent Garden, pledging a friend’s restaurant as collateral. • Famous singers of the day perform excerpts from Ballo, Barbiere (2 selections), Carmen, Chenier, Norma, Pagliacci plus songs. Five great stars in one film! • In this screwball comedy, a group of Italians present an opera concert in London, with Schipa, Gigli, Caniglia, Gobbi and Bechi. The singers play themselves, with Bechi and Gobbi getting the most singing and screen time • The arias are fully staged and vividly filmed, with lots of close-ups. With few exceptions, the camera stays directly on the singers. The print is superb • One of Bel Canto Society’s best B&W films! • “Nobody ever sang ‘Figaro, Figaro, Figaro’ with more inflections than Bechi. But the highlight that really leaps out is the ‘Toreador Song,’ where he provides a walloping spinal chill. Bechi was the most exciting baritone of the post-war period. Gobbi was the most artistic – here he sings the ‘Prologo’ and ‘Dicitencello vuie’ silkily, with exquisite legato. Schipa imbues every word of ‘Se il mio nome’ with meaning, so that it becomes spoken song. Gigli is a perfervid Chénier. The legendary Caniglia makes the only on-screen appearance of her career, singing ‘Casta diva.’ The 20-year-old, pre-Hollywood Lollobrigida looks innocent yet nubile.” — Stefan Zucker • This DVD has PCM Audio rather than compressed formats such as Dolby Digital • Bel Canto Society DVDs, videos and CDs are advertised and reviewed in Gramophone, International Record Review, Classics Today, Classical CD Review, Classic Record Collector and Opera News • Italian with English subtitles, B&W, 85 min

• The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with the Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. Allegro is now the exclusive U.S. distributor of these recordings • The latest volume in the acclaimed re-packaging of the complete Bach Cantata series on Challenge Classics which has now reached Vol. 19! • Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach’s most impressive opus • The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world, with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards • The Amsterdam Baroque Choir, founded in 1992, consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers • Born in Zwolle, Holland, in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship • Koopman’s extensive activities as a soloist and conductor have been recorded on a large number of LPs and CDs for labels including Erato, Teldec, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon • Begun in 1994, this series was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis “Echo Klassik” in Germany • The series will continue to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world’s leading experts on the music of Bach • Each set includes a thick, informative booklet • The cantatas of volume 19 can be divided into three groups. Four works (BWV 72, 88, 129 and 193) belong to the third Leipzig series, lasting from 1725 to 1727; five (BWV 145, 159, 171, 174 and 188) belong to the group known as the Picander cycle of 1728-29, which was not completed or has not survived complete; two works (BWV 51 and 117) belong to the period after 1730, in which Bach composed new church cantatas only sporadically • His first five years as Thomaskantor cost Johann Sebastian Bach unusual effort, as he had undertaken to compose the church cantatas appointed for each Sunday more or less by himself. He was not contractually obliged to do so, but he adhered quite strictly to this plan at least for two years and loosened it a little for the third yearly cycle, which was spread over two or three years. Even so, Bach never got stuck in a routine, as he was constantly discovering new facets of the cantata genre

CLASSICAL Jean-Philippe RAMEAU Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts Trio Arcangelo Corelli (Anke Fackert, violin/Peter Lamprecht, viola da gamba/ Joachim Vogelsänger, harpsichord) RAMEAU: Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts (5)

In composing his Pièces de clavecin en concerts, Rameau (1683 –1764) created a grand work of chamber music, and at the same time, the first-ever piano trios. The independence of the instrumental parts achieved here far surpasses what Haydn, Mozart and even Beethoven did in their piano trios. It is not until Schubert that we meet with trio writing of comparably elaborate texture. Trio Arcangelo Corelli formed in 1984. At first they worked intensely on early Italian violin music, especially on Corelli’s sonatas, and therefore chose the great Roman master as their “patron saint.” Based in Düsseldorf, they have given innumerable concerts and made radio and CD recordings.

Born in 1926, Hans Werner Henze long ago became recognized as one of the greatest and most original composers of the later 20th century. The three works on this disc, all written in the 1950s, reflect the period in which he lived in Italy and brought a new lyricism and color to his music. The Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, one of provincial Germany’s best ensembles, is led here by three different distinguished conductors. Stanislav Skrowaczewski is the best known to American audiences, having served as conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (now Minnesota Orchestra) for 11 seasons, and making a classic recording with them of the complete orchestral works of Ravel.

• Aleko was Sergei Rachmaninov’s first opera, and his earliest success. He composed the one-act melodrama in 1892 at the age of 19 in less than three weeks, and was awarded the Moscow Conservatory’s Gold Prize • Even more importantly, perhaps, the vocal score was published and a first performance arranged at Moscow’s prestigious Bolshoi Theater, where it shared a double bill with Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta at the elder composer’s insistence • In 1897, Aleko was premiered in St Petersburg, the title role being taken by the famous bass Feodor Chaliapin. Chaliapin would go on to record the cavatina, endearing it to generations of record collectors • Russian bass Evgeni Nesterenko joined the roster of Moscow’s famed Bolshoi Opera in 1971. Recorded in 1987, tenor Raúl Giménez presents a panorama of popular 20thcentury songs by composers of his native Argentina. These songs have their roots in Argentinean folk-idioms and in the simple lyricism of country life, and most are written in popular style. The fresh, rustic harmonies of Buchardo complement the strongly rhythmic elements, reflecting popular dance rhythms that characterize the selections of Guastavino. This reverence for tradition is continued in the songs of Ginastera, with their clear references to fast dance rhythms.

Heinrich MARSCHNER Der Vampyr (2 CDs) CD: OPD 7016 (2L)

• Heinrich Marschner (1795–1861) was a popular Early Romantic opera composer in Germany whose works disappeared for a few decades but have been successfully revived in recent times • Two of his operas, the proto-Wagnerian Hans Heiling, and the spooky Der Vampyr, have had frequent performances and recordings lately, but we do not think there is a better version of Der Vampyr than this one! • Recorded live in Munich in 1974, the performance features a number of major singers, something rare in “non-standard” operas. The recorded sound is quite exceptional, too! • First performed in 1828, Der Vampyr has a hair-raising Gothic plot about Lord Ruthven, a vampire much like Count Dracula, and his thirst for the blood of young females • The music is much in the vein or Mendelssohn or Weber. Wagner was a great admirer of Marschner and actually quotes one of his themes quite literally in Die Walküre

ROSSINI: La Cenerentola (complete opera)

• Among Rossini’s numerous comic operas, La Cenerentola (1817) has long held a place second only to The Barber of Seville • In fact, for many years it was often more popular than The Barber, until its extreme vocal difficulties became too much for a generation of singers not trained in the Rossini style, and its fantastic atmosphere fell afoul of a preference for verismo, the school of realism • In recent years, the revival of the bel canto style and intense interest in resurrecting authentic Rossini manuscripts has brought about a happy new lease on life for La Cenerentola, which once again is rivaling The Barber in popularity • The libretto by Jacopo Ferretti, though based on the Cinderella fairy tale as told by Charles Perrault, is far different in tone. Rossini and Ferretti agreed to suppress the supernatural themes and create a comedy of manners steeped in irony • This live performance, recorded in Naples in 1958, is one of the finest of its era, with a virtual all-star cast thoroughly schooled in the Rossini style

Trio Sonatas

Flute Quintets

La Magnifica Comunità/Enrico Casazza, baroque violin & conductor

Nicola Guidetti, flute/Nuovo Quartetto Italiano

TARTINI: 8 Trio Sonatas

Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770) was the great Italian violinist of his era, and remains eternally famous for his virtuosic “Devil’s Trill Sonata.” The rest of his output has suffered needless neglect, and this recording displays the beauty and skill of his musicality in eight additional works. These “trio sonatas” (works in sonata form for three instruments or parts – in this case violin, cello and harpsichord) have been overlooked as “minor works,” but actually they are of great interest when properly played.

BOCCHERINI: Flute Quintet in F, G.440 (premiere) • Flute Quintet in G, G.438 • Flute Quintet in B-flat, G.442

Luigi Boccherini (1743–1805) wrote more quintets than any other composer – 137 altogether. Boccherini’s music is not considered profound, but it gets high marks for being tuneful and pleasing to the ear. In fact, Boccherini is listed in the Guinness Book of Music Facts and Feats as “most ingratiating composer.”

This is the first volume in a projected series on Tactus called “The Italian Guitar in the 19th Century.” Mauro Giuliani (1781-1828) was the progenitor of this school of guitar music, so substantial and attractive, yet so needlessly overlooked in favor of the Spanish composers.

VERACINI: Sonatas for Violin Solo, Op. 1, No. 1-6

This is the first of two CDs presenting the 12 violin sonatas, Op. 1, by Veracini (1690–1768), a prototype for the far more famous Paganini of a later era, being a wizard on the violin, a composer as well as performer, vain and extravagant, and prone to weird behavior. First and foremost, he was a brilliant violinist. By age 25 he was regarded, according to Charles Burney (the best-known music historian of the 18th century), as “the greatest violinist in Europe.”

Otello (2 CDs)

I Capuleti e i Montecchi (2 CDs)

“ With Vinay as Otello and Furtwängler at the helm, this was bound to be something magical. Vinay is in towering form, a powerhouse of a man, and he makes the final scene unutterably painful…Furtwängler’s perception of the work’s architecture has a magisterial finality to it, making this performance a unique fusion of passion and intellect.” — Rough Guide to Opera Ramón Vinay, Dragica Martinis, Paul Schöffler, Anton Dermota, et al, vocal soloists/Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus/Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor VERDI: Otello (complete opera)

Chilean singer Ramón Vinay is little remembered today because of the rarity of his recordings, but he is considered by many to be the greatest Otello of the 20th century. Historic 1951 recording from the Salzburg Festival.

“Captures a trio of superb performers in their prime, in music that ideally suited their talents. Scotto’s Giulietta is rich, impassioned and youthful, Giacomo Aragall as Romeo is lucid, ringing and fluid right through his range, and Luciano Pavarotti, here singing Tebaldo, is simply magnificent. Add Claudio Abbado’s loving attention to orchestral legato and the excellent La Scala Chorus, and you have a rare example of first-class modern-day bel canto.” — Rough Guide to Opera Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Scotto, Giacomo Aragall, et al., vocal soloists/La Scala Orchestra & Chorus, Milan/Claudio Abbado, conductor BELLINI: I Capuleti e i Montecchi (complete opera)

Bellini’s telling of the Romeo and Juliet story, first staged in 1830, is one of his finest early works, and after decades of neglect it has almost returned today to the standard repertoire. Live 1967 recording.

THE AVIATORS

MAFIA WARS

Pioneers of Aviation: Boeing & Lockheed

Mafia Wars

This DVD celebrates the lives of three men – William E. Boeing and Alan & Malcolm Loughead (pronounced “Lockheed”) – who created the modern aviation industry. First-hand accounts document their achievements – from the planes they designed to the giant multinational corporations they built.

The combination of bloody gangland feuds and a worldwide police crackdown has decimated many of the leading mafia families. This comprehensive DVD examines the battles waged by the mafia gangs to control the lucrative Atlantic City casinos and the international police crackdowns that sealed their fate.

Episode 1 profiles America’s legendary aviation pioneer William E. Boeing, and the company he founded. Episode 2 tells the story of brothers Alan & Malcolm Loughead and the company that bears their name.

Episode 1 offers an inside look at the bloody gangster feud over control of the gambling profits in Atlantic City casinos. Episode 2 discusses why both the Sicilian and American mafias were virtually wiped out during the 1990s.

One of the pioneering groups of the meren-house/ reggaeton movement! Tres Equis was way ahead of its time, and Kenny “La Roca” Reyes was a tremendous producer whose talents helped this group gain popularity among the DJ community. El Vacilon features a re-mix version of “Everybody Salsa,” originally by Modern Romance, and a special guest appearance by bachatero Danny “Mano de Ceda” Garcia on the track “La Gozadera.” This CD will light up any house party!

Tres Equis is internationally recognized as one of the pioneering groups of the musical genres meren-house and reggaeton. Capicu introduced a new method of mixing merengue rhythms and street hip-hop elements. In particular, “Bailalo” marries a traditional merengue song, “Compadre Pedro Juan” with Kenny “La Roca” Reyes’ crazy house beats. A must for any serious Latin house collector!

• Polyphonic choral music forms an important part of the cultural heritage of Bulgaria. The primary features of this music are its method of vocalization without a trace of vibrato, and the use of discordant harmonies based especially on clashes of minor seconds and major sevenths • This music had remained hidden to the general public until 4AD picked up a recording of various female Bulgarian choirs and released it under the title Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares…Nonesuch grabbed the American rights and the album became a surprise best-seller in the late 1980s • The origins of all of this success spring from the founding, in 1952, of the first Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir by Philip Koutev. Koutev revitalized dying folk traditions, collecting folk tunes and creating complex arrangements for female choirs. This original female choir was the key group participating on the Le Mystère CD • This same choir is part of The Philip Koutev National Folk Ensemble, heard on this rich collection of traditional vocal and instrumental music. The ensemble consists of 120 members, including forty singers, sixty dancers, and twenty instrumentalists, and is a Bulgarian cultural ambassador that frequently tours around the world

Se l l i n g P o i n ts • Arguably the most famous of all Arabic musicians, Hamza El Din hails from Nubia, the now-underwater land of the Aswan High Dam in Northern Africa. His 1963 album on Vanguard, Music of Nubia, was the first recording of Afro-Arabic music to be distributed in the West. He is a titan of world music, an ambassador of Nubian culture, the founder of the modern Nubian music tradition, and the world’s greatest player of the oud (an Arabic lute-like instrument) • Hamza El Din first started singing as a means to warn his people about the inevitable destruction of their land due to the High Dam. He spent years wandering and collecting traditional music. He later studied classical Arabic music, and then in Rome began working on a synthesis of Arabic, Nubian and Western music • When he was finished studying in Rome, the High Dam had been built and he was homeless. Since then, he has become a citizen of the world, traveling and playing on all continents, and eventually emigrating to the Bay Area in California • Muwashshah is a tribute to Ziryab, a legendary African slave who escaped from the court of Baghdad to become one of Arabic music’s most important composers, and is one of El Din’s most celebrated recordings, called “a triumph” by All Music Guide

PAPI BASALDUA & GRUPO CANTARES

• Though not well known in the rest of the world, Papi Basaldúa and his Grupo Cantares are immensely popular in Latin America, especially in Argentina, where they fill large arenas, and in their homeland of Paraguay. The group is made up of three brothers and their sister, and is one of the foremost exponents of Paraguayan folklore • Basaldúa studied harp with his father, and was already participating in recordings at the age of eight. His younger brother Hugo is a vocalist and plays guitar, and has won songwriting contests in Paraguay. The youngest brother Yiyo also sings, and plays folk instruments such as the quena. And their sister, Hilda Maria, is a highly attractive and original singer, taking most of the lead vocals, and is also an expert in Paraguayan folk dance • In performances, Papi Basaldúa and his Grupo Cantares prize the purity of their tradition while at the same time expressing the feelings and emphases of the modern Paraguayan people… herein lies the secret of their great popularity in their homeland
