QTY NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
“
”
A session that can be an introduction for someone who wants to get into the essence of jazz—and will delight those who already know and can’t get enough of it. — JAZZTIMES
Press Quotes
“Perhaps the word ‘perfection’ is seen too often in music reviews. Nevertheless, One More: Music of Thad Jones deserves that honor … seasoned fans know and love these compositions and novices won’t find a better introduction to an unforgettable jazz composer. One More: Music of Thad Jones just never stops swinging.” — JAZZREVIEW.COM “The music on this CD has no cacophony, no torrent of notes going nowhere … everything meshes like the innards of a fine Rolex chronograph. I am satisfied that jazz as we know it and love it is alive, and not only well but strutting along main street in its Sunday best. It can get no better, unless we have a second coming of our mates in bop heaven. There are not enough stars in the heavens to rate this album.” — CALIFORNIA COAST JAZZ “This is as true and honest a tribute as you’ll find, partly because of the presence of ex-Jones-Lewis Orchestra members and others of their generation and partly because of the Jones-like essence of the arrangements. There’s transcendent soul here—may as well call it love—as if Jones has returned for a visit.” — THE NEWS & OBSERVER
Featured Artists Jimmy Owens, trumpet, flugelhorn/James Moody, tenor & soprano sax/Frank Wess, tenor & alto sax, flute/Benny Golson, tenor sax/ Bob Brookmeyer, trombone/Hank Jones, piano/Sir Roland Hanna, piano/Richard Davis, bass/Mickey Roker, drums

HIP-HOP “All the Way Live in ‘82 succeeds in forever preserving a handful of fleeting moments from hip-hop’s golden age (minus the apprehension, sheepskin coats, and angel dust, mind you). Culled from an assortment of earlyeighties live performances, this collection is as ‘real’ as hip-hop gets. All of the elements that made them legends in their own time are captured here: the harmonizing, the DJing, the camaraderie, and the showmanship. Taped at various locations including a Connecticut roller rink and then mastered for clarity, this record celebrates the true spirit of hip-hop.” — THE SOURCE

This is the definitive album of the early songs of Ned Rorem, and arguably the greatest collection of American art songs ever recorded Recorded by Columbia Records with the composer at the piano First time on CD, with completely refurbished sound Rorem’s first major album—one that catapulted him into the national classical music spotlight when it was originally released in January 1964! Electrifying performances by the greatest soloists of the day Superb poetry by a range of writers from Robert Herrick, John Dryden, and Ben Jonson to Gertrude Stein, Elizabeth Bishop, and Theodore Roethke Decades ago, Time magazine called Ned Rorem “the world’s best composer of art songs,” and few have challenged that judgment since Although he has written exceptionally fine orchestral music, his songs and choral pieces seem destined to remain his best-known legacy, in part because they are so performer-friendly. Singers love to sing his songs, and church choirs find his choral works exceptionally satisfying Uniquely, Rorem became just as famous for his literary efforts, which now total fourteen books of music criticism, lectures, and his flamboyantly frank personal diaries His inner life has thus become perhaps the most public of any composer in history. He has admitted that his music is as much a diary as his prose, and yet “a diary … differs from a musical composition in that it depicts the moment, the writer’s present mood which, were it inscribed an hour later, could emerge quite otherwise. I don’t believe that composers notate their moods, they don’t tell the music where to go—it leads them … why do I write music? Because I want to hear it—it’s simple as that. Others may have more talent, more sense of duty. But I compose just from necessity, and no one else is making what I need” In 1948 Rorem’s song “The Lordly Hudson” (included in this recording) was voted the Best Published Song of that year by the Music Library Association As a body of work, his songs are universally admired as among the best of the twentieth century, demonstrating his unique ability to keep the poet’s meaning intact while suffusing it with music Rorem has rejected the complexities of serial music and other “modern” theories of composition, opting instead for a simple, clear, diatonic approach—but as has often been remarked, the surface naiveté of his music conceals great depths of feeling and meaning. As critic Alec Ross has written, “his music is too mysteriously sweet to die away” The five vocalists on this recording were all among the best of their era, particularly in the art-song genre, and all made numerous recordings on major labels Soprano Phyllis Curtin (b. 1921) was a well-known star of New York City Opera and the Met (especially in Mozart) before becoming one of America’s leading voice teachers at the Berkshire Music Center, Yale University, and finally Boston University, where she served as dean of the School of the Arts until her retirement in 1992

CLASSICAL Viktor KOSENKO Eleven Etudes in the Form of Old Dances Natalya Shkoda, piano KOSENKO: Eleven Etudes in the Form of Old Dances, Op. 19
CD: TOC 36 (R) Standard Jewel Case File Under: Classical
Viktor Kosenko (1896 –1938) was one of the most important Ukrainian composers and pianists of the first half of the twentieth century. His music is the result of an organic synthesis of the late-Romantic piano tradition and elements of the national musical style. The innovative aspect of Eleven Etudes in the Form of Old Dances, Op. 19 lies in their unification of two different genres: they are both concert etudes and dances. They offer a combination of the late-Romantic piano tradition, Baroque dance forms, and Ukrainian folk music. These bright and clever pieces receive here their first-ever recording outside Ukraine. A native of Kharkiv, Ukraine, Dr. Natalya Shkoda is the winner of numerous classical music competitions including the MasterWorks Festival Concerto Competition in Houghton and Keyboard Competition for the Contemporary American Music in both harpsichord and piano. Shkoda is active both as a performer and musical critic. She has given a large number of performances around the world, and currently makes her home in Texas.

Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger (1580–1651) was one of the most innovative and original composers in early seventeenth-century Rome, and a virtuoso on the lute and chitarrone, or theorbo. His Second Book of Arias, published in Rome in 1623 for one and two voices, are extraordinary works that reveal both his vivid imagination in setting poetry to music, and his flair for dramatic gestures. Victor Coehlo is on the faculty of the University of Calgary and is an established scholar in the field of Renaissance music. He is the editor of Performance on Lute, Guitar and Vihuela in the Cambridge series of manuals on historical practice and modern interpretation.

“Dynamic, accomplished, and imaginative musicians.” — BOSTON GLOBE “Roumain … has emerged as something of a hero in the demanding New York arts world. The New York Times put a Roumain performance at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall at No. 3 on its list of Top 10 classical music events.” — SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE “Classical music hasn’t gone through this kind of renaissance since, well, the Renaissance.” — CBS EVENING NEWS (ON ROUMAIN)
The Lark Quartet (Maria Bachmann & Deborah Buck, violins/Kathryn Lockwood, viola/Astrid Schween, cello) SCHICKELE: Scherzo from Quartet No. 2 “In Memoriam” · MORAVEC: Atmosfera a Villa Aurelia · Vince & Jan: 1945 · GERSHWIN (arr. Silverman): He Loves and She Loves · Fascinatin’ Rhythm · Do It Again · Clap Your Hands · Sweet & Low Down · ROUMAIN: Quartet No. 5 “Rosa Parks” · Klap Ur Hands [Remix]
· The works on this recording represent the Lark Quartet’s longtime association with new music and adventuresome programming · There is traditional string quartet playing, but also the string quartet as never heard before. The exploration of this new voice, however, is a thoughtful one rather than a mere attempt to be different · The works chosen reflect the Lark Quartet’s long and close association with the composers Peter Schickele and Paul Moravec, and with the Quartet’s more recent discovery, Daniel Bernard Roumain. The Gershwin songs are also explorative, with the unearthing of Stanley Silverman’s elegant translation of them that goes well beyond the expected · Performing with a unique blend of excitement, individuality, technical brilliance, and an unusually sonorous quartet sound, the Lark Quartet has won the acclaim of critics and audiences alike · Building on the group’s illustrious commissioning history, the Lark continues its bold approach to wide-ranging musical styles · Peter Schickele is internationally recognized as one of the most versatile artists in the field of music as a composer, pianist, author, and satirist. His works, now well in excess of one hundred for symphony orchestras, choral groups, chamber ensembles, voice, movies, and television, have given him “a leading role in the ever-more-prominent school of American composers who unselfconsciously blend all levels of American music” according to the New York Times · Paul Moravec, recipient of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Music, has composed over ninety orchestral, chamber, choral, lyric, film, and electro-acoustic pieces · Daniel Bernard Roumain (“DBR”), the son of Haitian immigrants, is a composer/performer/band leader who seamlessly blends funk, rock, hip-hop, and classical music into a new and highly personal sonic vision. His dramatic, soul-inspiring pieces have been commissioned and performed by orchestras nationwide including the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s · The centerpiece of Klap Ur Handz is the world premiere recording of DBR’s new string quartet, dedicated to civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks · Earlier this year, DBR’s music was highlighted in a feature story on NPR’s All Things Considered. The broadcast included a focus on the Lark Quartet’s first rehearsal of Quartet No. 5 “Rosa Parks” · For more information on the Lark Quartet, visit www.larkquartet.com · For more information on DBR, visit www.dbrmusic.com Order Date: September 22, 2006

· The present volume sets Shostakovich’s large-scale works against his smaller pieces written for various occasions · Sonata No. 1 is the young Shostakovich at his most daring and intransigent. Shostakovich often performed this sonata, and its stormy torrent of energy amazed enthusiastic listeners · In October 1942 Shostakovich received news that his piano teacher L. Nikolaev had died, and he decided to write a tribute piece, Sonata No. 2. This asceticsounding work, shot through with the tragedy of war and the siege of Leningrad, was composed in the spring of 1943 · Three Pieces were composed in 1920 and contain imitations of past styles. The Children’s Notebook was intended to teach children music with a gradual increase in difficulty. The acid wit heard in the works of the 1940s turns up in the Charlie Chaplin-esque Murzilka. Three Variations on Glinka were composed for the fortieth anniversary of the 1917 Revolution, and were Shostakovich’s last major work for solo piano

Benigne de BACILLY & Charles MOUTON Airs & Dances Claudine Ansermet, soprano/Paolo Cherici, theorbo BACILLY: 16 Airs · MOUTON: 13 Dances
Benigne de Bacilly (1625–1690) was a talented poet, composer, and singer who excelled in all types of airs. Between 1661 and 1688 he published secular and religious airs for solo voice and basso continuo. He devoted his whole life to reforming French song, and his treatise L’art de bien chanter (1668) is his major manifesto, laying down a theory of French pronunciation. The present recording is an anthology of secular and religious airs, each of which is preceded by a piece for lute by Charles Mouton, a lutenist and contemporary of Bacilly’s. Mouton’s stylized dances are well suited to Bacilly’s airs, since both have a number of points in common (including sources) and because of the decisive influence of dance rhythms on most French vocal works. Paolo Cherici here plays a theorbo, close relative of the lute, and often used in place of it in that era.

BUXTEHUDE: La Capricciosa • 12 Suites for Harpsichord • More Palatino • Courant simple • Preludium manualiter
• Dietrich Buxtehude (ca. 1637–1707) was a Danish-born organist and composer of the German Baroque; he was organist at St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck most of his life • Although known today mostly for his organ and vocal works, he produced a large number of pieces for the harpsichord, as well as a few chamber sonatas • Regarded at one time as mostly an “influence” on later composers, including Bach, Handel, and Telemann, Buxtehude has risen steadily in modern estimation and is now considered the most important German composer between Schütz and Bach • One of the most famous incidents in Baroque music history was Bach’s 200mile journey on foot to hear the elderly Buxtehude play the organ. Bach was entranced and overstayed his trip. Buxtehude was so touched he offered Bach his organ job—but a condition included marriage to his eldest daughter, and Bach diplomatically declined • This 2-CD set inaugurates an exciting edition on Challenge Classics of the complete works of Buxtehude performed by Ton Koopman and colleagues • Since many of Buxtehude’s works, including all his oratorios, have been lost, this edition fills a particular historical urgency to keep his surviving legacy alive • This first volume focuses exclusively on the composer’s harpsichord works, performed on two instruments built by Willem Kroesbergen after historical models • Dutch harpsichordist, organist, conductor, and scholar Ton Koopman is universally acknowledged as one of today’s pre-eminent Early Music performers, sitting very near the top of an impossibly crowded field • Ton Koopman’s extensive activities as a soloist and conductor have been recorded on a large number of LPs and CDs for labels including Erato, Teldec, Philips, and Deutsche Grammophon • In 1979 he founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the Baroque, whose recordings have won numerous awards • Buxtehude’s music is catalogued using Georg Karstädt’s BuxtehudeWerke-Verzeichnis (abbreviated as BuxWV), first published in the 1970s

Igor Roma Romantic Pieces for Piano
A unique program of great Romantic piano masterpieces, including Igor Roma’s own arrangement of the Alkan work based on Aesop’s Fables. Roma, a winner of many international piano competitions, started his successful career in 1996 when he won the first prize at the International Competition Franz Liszt in Utrecht, where his performance convinced the jury not to award the second prize, so the other two finalists divided the third prize. His repertoire is very wide; he plays both Bach and Messiaen, and includes less-known pieces by Szymanowski, Kurtag, and Falla. Igor Roma has played with many famous orchestras and conductors in Europe, Africa, and Asia. His concerts have been often broadcast live on TV. He has also participated at various international festivals. He has performed with colleagues at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam before Queen Beatrix, and at New York’s Lincoln Center. Igor Roma also frequently plays chamber music with renowned musicians.

BREAKING NEWS!!! U.K. Classical Independent
Lyrita Returns To The American Marketplace! One of the most respected ‘independent’ labels, Lyrita Recorded Edition (which will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary in 2009), has concluded a comprehensive license deal with Allegro’s business partner Wyastone Estate Limited, producers of Nimbus Records. The agreement calls for the reintroduction of the entire Lyrita catalogue over the next two years. Wyastone will undertake the digitization of Lyrita’s original analogue masters, most of which have never been available on CD, and anticipates that the catalogue will then exceed 130 titles. There have been few (if any!) independents that have specialized in British music to the extent that Lyrita has— not to mention with the label’s devotion and flair! The consistent approach and high standards of Lyrita founder Richard Itter have produced a remarkable catalogue that includes many world premieres and composer-conducted recordings. His pioneering efforts on behalf of the major twentieth century English composers Arnold, Alwyn, Bax, Finzi, Foulds, Holst, Ireland, Rawsthorne, Rubbra, and Wordsworth (to name only the most familiar) set a benchmark for technical quality and musical judgment. Richard Itter says, “I am proud of the Lyrita recordings. I have been privileged to work with the most wonderful orchestras, conductors, soloists, and instrumentalists and incredibly dedicated producers and engineers. They all became deeply involved in this marvelous neglected, forgotten, or unknown music and breathed vibrant new life into it. With this new agreement many of you will be able to discover this for yourselves. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.” Damon Sgobbo, Allegro’s VP of Sales, added, “The Lyrita label not only fills one of the very few remaining gaps in any classical music lover’s collection, but is also truly in a class by itself on all levels. The attention to detail for the audiophile is astounding, and the level of these performances of often-overlooked English masterpieces by some of the greatest English conductors, composers, and orchestras of the twentieth century are simply second to none. We are very excited and extremely proud to welcome them back to Allegro. It’s been way too long!” Antony Smith and Adrian Farmer, directors of Wyastone Estate Limited, have worked closely with the Lyrita catalogue for many years. This new agreement is the fulfillment of a long-held ambition to restore a truly magical catalogue to its rightful place.

QTY NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
“The late Trevor Harvey gave a warm and well-deserved welcome to the English, Scottish, and Cornish Dances, when these recordings, conducted by the composer, first appeared. Now with Arnold’s latest set of Irish Dances added, as well as the two movements which were written to go with the two sets of English Dances as the ballet, Solitaire, it is even more of a winner. It is even more compelling than the very recent Chandos issue of the same coupling from Bryden Thomson and the Philharmonia. Arnold regularly takes a broader, more warmly expressive view without ever sacrificing tension, often springing rhythms more infectiously — the analogue sound on the Lyrita issue is given a splendid transfer. It is less analytical than the Chandos, but with plenty of presence it is just as full and brilliant. The new items, in digital sound, very well recorded too, bring no feeling of inconsistency.” — GRAMOPHONE
London Philharmonic Orchestra/Malcolm Arnold, conductor ARNOLD: English Dances, Sets 1 & 2 (Opp. 27 & 33) • Solitaire • Irish Dances, Op. 126 • Scottish Dances, Op. 59 • Cornish Dances, Op. 91
• The eighty-fifth birthday of Sir Malcolm Arnold (b. 1921) has provided the ideal occasion for the re-release of several of his irreplaceable Lyrita recordings conducting his own beloved works, of which these dances for orchestra are certainly the best known • This disc is one of the rare recordings to have all the dances on one CD, and of course the only one conducted by the composer • Although acknowledged early in his career as one of the great trumpeters of the age, the need to express himself through composition finally demanded all of Arnold’s time • By the mid-1950s Arnold was often bracketed with Benjamin Britten and William Walton as one of the most sought-after of the “serious” composers in England • His catalogue includes nine symphonies, seven ballets, two operas, one musical, over twenty concertos, two string quartets, music for brass and winds, and 132 film scores including The Bridge on the River Kwai

“The best example of Arnold’s genius can be heard in his perhaps greatest work, a masterpiece in my opinion, Symphony No. 4 (1960) … Arnold’s own version on Lyrita with the LPO is a must here. He takes the time and effort to draw out every subtle nuance that his work has to offer.” — PAUL JAMES’ MODERN MUSIC REVIEW
“Alwyn’s technical mastery and his ability to conceal ingenuity make for consistently strong, immediate music-making. It is most welcome to have his own interpretations restored to the catalogue, with the CD transfers offering bright, full, well-balanced sound, only slightly edgy on high strings.” — GRAMOPHONE

ALWYN: Overture, Derby Day (1960) • Symphonic Prelude, The Magic Island • Four Elizabethan Dances (from the set of six) (1952) • Sinfonietta for Strings (1970) • Festival March
Malcolm Arnold’s nine symphonies are among the finest written by an Englishman. They are solidly constructed and full of surprising ideas and highly colored effects that please both critics and general audiences.
William Alwyn (1905–1985) was a British composer whose appeal has been steadily widening in recent years. This is one of two Lyrita recordings Alwyn made of his own orchestral music, and it is a most attractive introduction to his art.

Grazyna Bacewicz (1909–1969) was the first Polish woman to become a famous composer. Educated in Paris under the legendary Nadia Boulanger, she became a master violinist and most of her compositions feature that instrument. Seriously injured in a car accident in 1954, she then gave up performing and teaching to concentrate on composing. Pianist Ewa Kupiec is the preeminent interpreter and advocate of the music of Grazyna Bacewicz. Her previous release of the complete published piano music received global acclaim. Pianist Kupiec is joined by virtuoso violinist Piotr Plawner in spirited and authentic interpretations of this neglected master’s music for violin and piano. The music of Bacewicz is extremely accessible, yet modern. While she explored many different styles, her music is based in the traditions of Polish folk music. New interest in the music of Bacewicz makes this an extremely attractive addition to any collection.

This is the first release in the new Hänssler Classic Blüthner Artists Series, which is now being made available to the general consumer in America for the first time! Each disc will feature some of Europe and America’s finest pianists in concert and recital, demonstrating the extraordinary range of the famous Blüthner pianos. Austrian pianist Florian Krumpöck has distinguished himself throughout Europe for his sensitivity to the language of Schubert’s music. The poetic nuance of the Blüthner concert grand, and Krumpöck’s interpretations of these two popular sonatas, gives full rein to Schubert’s musical landscapes. Now in his late twenties, Krumpöck was a child prodigy, born into a musical family (his father was a cellist in the Vienna Philharmonic). He won great acclaim during the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition. He already has a worldwide concert career, has soloed with the greatest orchestras, has been featured on CD compilations, and now is conducting his own orchestra in Vienna. He has recently given a solo recital in Beijing to rave reviews.

· Along with Goethe, Heine, and Geibel, Eichendorff is one of those German poets whose works have most often been set to music. Some became so widespread that they were considered to be anonymous folk songs and their true author was forgotten · This new recording from master interpreter of the Lied Christoph Prégardien includes the songs of two composers who perceptively revealed the hidden music inside of Eichendorff ’s verse · From Schumann’s compendium of Romanticism, the Liederkreis, Op. 39, to the earthy, naturalistic settings by Wolf, this is a program of the German Lied that no collector will want to miss · One of the most important new Lieder singers to appear in decades, Christoph Prégardien already has over ninety recordings to his credit · Praised for impeccable phrasing, expressive nuance, and refined delivery, Prégardien is widely considered one of today’s finest exponents of the art song · Born in Germany in 1956, Prégardien began singing with the Limburg Cathedral Choir. Later, he studied at the Frankfurt College of Music, with private studies in Milan and Stuttgart · In 1978 he won the Federal Republic of Germany Vocal Competition in Berlin · An opera career followed across Europe, but also a major recital career which has emphasized the great Baroque oratorios and Passions, and works by both seventeenth and twentieth century composers · His first four records of Lieder met with resounding acclaim and were followed by more recordings of songs by Schubert and Schumann · This is Christoph Prégardien’s Hänssler Classic solo Lied CD debut!

Three hundred years of viola repertoire are represented in the enormous time span of this release. One of the earliest composers to use solo viola in an instrumental work was Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767). His Concerto in G is the oldest surviving viola concerto. Johann Neopomuk Hummel (1778–1837) is known today principally for his piano compositions, yet he completed compositions for every type and form of music other than the symphony. Paul Hindemith (1895–1963) composed, on the occasion of the death of the English King George V in 1936, the Trauermusik. The echoes of folk music dominate many of the works by the Israeli composer Oedoen Partos (1907–1977). The composer Alfred Schnittke, born in 1934, reveals the form of his viola composition written in 1989 in its title: Monologue. Rainer Moog was principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1974 to 1978. He has performed all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician.

It will always remain a mystery how the unsuccessful opera composer Schubert could celebrate his greatest success with a piece for the theater of dubious quality for which he allegedly composed the music. The result was the enchanting suite Rosamunde. The Concert Piece for violin and orchestra is a youthful composition of Schubert’s, written in 1816; it is one of the less well known of his works and can only rarely be heard on the concert platform. Schubert’s first symphonies were without exception not for the general public; the Third was written only for a private performance. Michael Gielen conducts Rosamunde on this release; the other pieces are led by Václav Neumann. The main aim of the SWR Symphony Orchestra since its foundation in 1946 has been to increase audience awareness not only of the symphonic repertoire of the past two centuries, but also of the music of the twentieth century. The SWR Symphony Orchestra is a permanent guest at the world’s most prestigious concert halls and music festivals.

Although George Enescu experienced his first international success very early on in his career, not only as a musician but as a composer, forty years after his death there are still only very few of his works —primarily the Romanian Rhapsodies (Op. 11)—performed in the standard concert repertoire. Among his compositions there are numerous forms and genres of orchestral and chamber music: the Symphony Concertante Op. 8 was written in 1901 in the style of a solo concert for cello and orchestra. Originally composed for voice and piano, the Sept chansons de Clément Marot Op. 15 are performed in this recording in a version for tenor and orchestra. Enescu’s chamber music culminated in his Chamber Symphony Op. 33, written in 1954, the year before he died.

Every one of his concertos is unique, a foray on unexplored musical territory pressing forward to new understandings of form and content · Concerto No. 20 is one of the few Mozart concerti in a minor key and, as such, it especially appealed to the later generation of Romantics. It was often played by Beethoven, who composed the cadenzas used on this recording, as Mozart did not leave us any of his own · Concerto No. 18 is one of six that Mozart composed in 1784. It was written for the blind pianist Maria Theresia Paradis, whom he had met in Salzburg in 1783 · Matthias Kirschnereit is one of the leading German pianists of his generation. His international solo career has taken him to five continents and he has toured the U.S. · He has very close links to the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, with whom he is recording Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s collected piano concertos for Arte Nova · Kirschnereit’s fascination with Mozart’s piano concertos dates back to his earliest youth. · In his “year of songs,” 1840, Robert Schumann composed no fewer than 138 songs, and in the next year created his youthful Spring Symphony (No. 1) · In the same year Schumann yearned for an exotic subject to be set to music. When Schumann’s former companion in joy and sorrow, Emil Flechsig, showed him his libretto Das Paradies und die Peri, created after Thomas Moore’s oriental epos Lalla Rookh, Schumann at once fell for the material · The composer was attracted magically by the image of purity, delicacy, and Madonna-like nature of the Peri, coupled with a fairy-tale magic world of the Orient · In Das Paradies und die Peri Schumann weaves Western worship of the Virgin Mary and the idea of redemption often brought forward during the time of the nineteenth century into an exotically transfigured world of elves · A native of Hamburg, Joshard Daus began a close collaboration with the legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache in 1986. This led him to the post of choir director at the Munich Philharmonic from 1990–1993 · Joshard Daus translated his ideals into reality with the founding and directorship of the EuropaChorAkademie starting in 1997. The Akademie arose out of a collaboration between the Johannes Gutenberg University and the Hochschule Bremen · As a forum for young European musicians, an educational institution, and a concert choir, the EuropaChorAkademie constitutes the ideal platform for working on choral symphonic music in its most demanding forms · The Southwest German Chamber Orchestra, Pforzheim, has released out over 150 records and CDs since its founding in 1950 Order Date: September 22, 2006

Peter Warlock, pseudonym of Philip Heseltine, was born in London in 1894 and became a friend and protégé of Frederick Delius. He published books and essays under his family name, Heseltine. The pseudonym Peter Warlock was reserved for the publication of his own compositions, mostly songs but also including orchestral pieces, choir, and chamber music — for example, the Serenade for Strings, the Six Italian Dance Tunes, and the Six English Tunes, recorded here for the first time. Ross Pople studied at the Paris Conservatory and at age twenty-six was invited by Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez to be principal cellist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the youngest ever in the history of the orchestra. In 1980 he founded the London Festival Orchestra, whose numerous recordings have attracted positive reviews, and he has been seen often on the BBC.

Thanks to his employment by various rich patrons, Arcangelo Corelli (1653–1713) was able to lead a life free of financial worries, and enjoy a steady demand for his compositions. In the year 1774—one year after Corelli’s death—the twelve Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 were published in Amsterdam. They display a new genre at its highest perfection. The Concerto Grosso was developed during the last decades of the seventeenth century and calls for an orchestra made up of various groupings of instruments in direct dialogue. This was the form later used by Bach in his Brandenburg Concertos. The most famous of Corelli’s is No. 8, known as the “Christmas Concerto.” The repertoire of the London Festival Orchestra embraces the very widest range—from the eclectic and contemporary to the classical and baroque, from Boccherini and Bach to Tippett and Tavener. The excellence of the LFO’s playing is reflected in the outstanding reviews its recordings have universally received.

The music of Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) reflects strongly his continually growing identification with Finnish nationalism, and his attention to ancient Nordic mythology and Swedish folk poetry. At the center of his output are the symphonies, distinguished by the composer’s unusual feeling for structure. Sibelius worked on the Fifth Symphony for almost six years. A first version of it, in four movements, appeared in time for the celebration of his fiftieth birthday, but only in 1919 did the final version—the one played most often today—appear. The Violin Concerto, written between 1902 and 1905, received poor reviews at its premiere. Sibelius revised it and it had a new premiere under the baton of Richard Strauss. Today it is considered one of the composer’s greatest works. Under the direction of Adrian Leaper since 1994, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria has gained an outstanding international reputation as a symphony and opera orchestra.

If music, like wine, is evaluated in terms of vintages, then 1927 was a very good year for the reed trio, typically comprised of an oboe, a clarinet, and a bassoon. 1927 heralded the creation in Paris of an elite ensemble with three of the city’s most eminent players: oboist Myrtil Morel, clarinetist Pierre Lefebvre, and the group’s founder, bassoonist Fernand Oubradous. Also that year and in the same city, Max Eschig published Heitor Villa-Lobos’ daring Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, and in Prague the radically eclectic Ervin Schulhoff completed his Divertissement for the same instrumental combination. Alexander Tansman’s Suite pour trio d’anches of 1949 is influenced by Stravinsky. Of all the works on the present disc, it is Rustiques by Joseph Canteloube that resonates most with wind players to this day. Known primarily for his Chants d’Auvergne, Canteloube again mined old French chansons and dances for inspiration, but this time he wove together tunes from all across the country.

Duo Tromboni (M. Dee Fabio & Stewart Sampó, trombones)/Ashley Toms, piano 13 selections of Italian opera arias and songs by Verdi, Puccini, Pergolesi, Donizetti, Mascagni, Leoncavallo & Rossini, arranged for two trombones.
Indiana University School of Music faculty trombonist M. Dee Stewart, always seeking performing adventures, invited the co-principal trombonist of the National Radio Orchestra in Turin, Italy, Fabio Sampó, to join him for this celebration of operatic highlights transcribed for two trombones. There are well loved selections from Puccini’s La bohème, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Verdi’s Aida, and more, along with songs of Rossini, including “Duetto di Due Gatti,” a riotous “cat duet” usually reserved for two sopranos. Stewart has a rich history of performance accolades. Fabio Sampó has performed as first trombone in the Toscanini Orchestra under Lorin Maazel, Forty Years of Music with Luciano Pavarotti, and the La Scala Choir. The music of Joseph Sickman Corsen (1853–1911) is a delightful discovery for most music lovers, although he has long been beloved on the island of Curaçao in the Caribbean, where he was born. He was more famous as a poet, the first to invigorate the vernacular Papiamentu language with literary aspirations. His musical accomplishments were less well known in his lifetime, as he preferred to write more serious “art” music than the ephemeral danzas and rumbas that were so popular as “salon music” at the time. He wrote in those genres, but with unusual creativity, sensitivity, and sophistication. The revival of Corsen’s music is attributable in large part to the interest and affection of his great-grandson, the pianist Randal Corsen. Trained mainly in jazz, Randal Corsen has selected twenty-three pieces by his ancestor for this unique recording and given them the nineteenth-century treatment they need and deserve. Randal Corsen was honored with the Edison Jazz Award in 2004 for his album Evolushon. Born on Curaçao in 1972, he studied in the Netherlands and now teaches at the Amsterdam Conservatory and elsewhere.

The voice of Herbert Ernst Groh (1906–1982) attracted attention at an early age, and he specialized in operetta from the outset. His career was dominated by broadcasting and recording, rather than the stage. Often compared to Richard Tauber, Groh left for his many admirers and vocal collectors a huge recorded legacy of well over 600 discs. The repertoire ranges from operatic arias and duets with other distinguished contemporary recording artists to numerous popular songs and well-known Italian and Neapolitan canzone—mostly sung in German. Advertising in Gramophone. Total playing time: over seventy minutes.

· Nadiezda means “hope” in Russian · Mikhail Tolpygo is a Russian violist, heir to the tradition of great chamber music players. He performed for Shostakovich, and has a natural command of this repertoire · Born in the Soviet Union in 1941, Tolpygo obtained his degree in viola from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, studying under Vadim Borisovky, himself a student of a friend of Rachmaninov · He also studied conducting with Igor Markevich and violin with Elizabeth Gilels · Tolpygo is internationally recognized as great interpreter of contemporary compositions, many of which have been written for him, although his repertoire embraces virtually all major works written for his instrument as well as the viola d’amore · He has made more than twenty-five recordings as soloist or as a member of chamber ensembles · From 1967 to 1991 he was principal viola of the USSR State Orchestra under the baton of Evgeny Svetlanov. He now holds the same position in Mexico’s National Symphony Orchestra · He is joined by Manuel González, a Mexican pianist trained in the former Soviet Union, who has also devoted his talent to Russian chamber music from the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth · González has performed in Mexico, the U.S., France, Germany, Spain, Cuba, and Russia, both in recital and as soloist. He performs regularly with Mikhail Tolpygo as well as in piano duos with Marta Garcia Renart · The transcription used in the Rachmaninov was made by Vadim Borisovsky and approved by the composer himself

Strauss, Respighi, and Rachmaninov are revealed and revered with transcendent intensity · Born in Uruguay, Daniel Noli studied in Romania and Russia on scholarships, winning two competitions in Italy and the Debussy Competition in France · He has concertized through Europe, Latin America, and the U.S. · Now living in Mexico, he is a professor at the National Conservatory of Music, and a member of the National Institute of Fine Arts · Reflections is an album on which Daniel Noli has chosen works that evoke “a smile, a tear, a suggestive landscape, an emotion that barely appears, a fleeing memory, peace, serenity. A moment trapped in our memory; a timeless instant” · “Noli possesses the nature of an authentic musician, a rich sensibility, and a clear musical intelligence; he has managed to build himself a transparent and dynamic technique that he uses in his warm, convincing, and at the same time well-balanced and splendid performances.” — OVIDU DRIMBA, HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF PIANO, BUCHAREST CONSERVATORY

Duetti Profani Matelda Viola & Paola Ronchetti, sopranos/Giovanni Caruso, theorbo/Gino Nappo, harpsichord/Luigi Polsini & Margarethe Thyssen, viola da gambas/Olga Ercoli, harp D’INDIA: 17 selections from Le Musiche, Book I (1609) and Book II (1615)
In 1615 the Venetian publisher Ricciardo Amadino issued Le Musiche by Sigismondo d’India (1580–1629), feeling certain that he was offering a product which would prove a commercial success, as had been the first book of monodies by the same author, published in Milan in 1609. The notoriety of the musician induced optimism: he had arrived on the scene of the new century demonstrating his abilities to maneuver excellently in all musical genres. The versatility of his muse, the quality of his writing, and perhaps the dedication of his first book of motets to Cardinal Maurizio di Savoia, all probably played a determining role in procuring D’India the appointment of maestro della musica da camera at the court of Duke Carlo Emanuele I. Beginning on April 1, 1611, he entered into the service at the Savoy court, earning a yearly salary of 200 ducats. He remained in Turin until May 1623, at which time he left (for reasons which remain obscure), and resumed his wanderings in search of another stable and prestigious position worthy of his reputation.

Antonio VIVALDI Concerti for Violin & Organ Il Rossignolo/Ottaviano Tenerani, director & organist VIVALDI: Concerti for Violin & Organ, R.554, 541, 542, 766 & 777 · Recorder Sonata in F, R.52
This recording features two complete collections: the concertos for organ and violin (in one case, organ, violin, and cello) and the sonatas for recorder and bass. Both collections contain aspects of exceptional interest. Although volumes have been written about Vivaldi and his instrumental compositions, the five Concerti a violino et organo obligati employing the organ have been practically ignored. One is immediately struck by the fact that the number of such works is extremely limited—a mere five, in fact—compared to the number of concertos dedicated to other instruments, and this is underscored by the rare occasions when Vivaldi used the organ as an obbligato instrument. In fact, Vivaldi was one of the first composers to remove the keyboard instrument from its fundamental but obscure role of a continuo player, and place it instead in the forefront of an instrumental ensemble. A few years later, keyboard instruments in general would become one of the most popular choices for solo concertos. Il Rossignolo (“The Nightingale”) is one of modern Italy’s finest Early Music ensembles, playing authentic instruments.

The widespread popularity of the guitar in the chambers of the aristocracy did not cease even after the French revolution. The instrument, having acquired the sixth string at the turn of the century (flaunting its “fashionable” form, shaped after the neoclassical lyre), continued to delight social gatherings in the salons of Europe. In this sense, the period of Napoleonic domination highlighted the socio-cultural elements responsible for one of the most fertile moments in the history of the guitar. The repertoires in prints and manuscripts from the first half of the 1800s are a further indication of the enormous popularity enjoyed by the guitar in this period. Its diffusion spread to the grand capitols of Europe—Paris, Vienna, and London— thanks above all to the Italian and Spanish players and the Viennese and Parisian publisher.

The Sixteen/Harry Christophers, conductor/Members of The Duke Quartet
TALLIS: Spem in alium (40-voice motet) · Te Deum · Sing and glorify · GIBBONS: O all true faithful hearts · BYRD: Deus venerunt gentes · TOMKINS: Know you not · O God, the heathen are come · Be strong
Newly recorded, Thomas Tallis’ forty-part motet Spem in alium, one of the great landmarks of polyphony, forms the centerpiece of this dazzling CD. Under the theme Music for Monarchs and Magnates, The Sixteen draws together music by Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, and Thomas Tomkins, some of it never before recorded. It explores the use of music for ceremonial, even propaganda, purposes by the state, contrasted with the composers’ private use of biblical texts to give public vent to their sometimes dangerous views in an England torn by political and religious strife.
Despite the mystic beauty of his music, John Tavener’s place in Western music is a controversial one, yet part of the attraction of his music must surely arise from its symbolic nature, a reflection of his deeply held Orthodox faith. This collection covers a wide range of Tavener’s celebrated choral output, including his immediately popular setting of William Blake’s The Lamb and the luminously spiritual Ikon of Light.

HANDEL: Israel in Egypt
Of all Handel’s great oratorios, Israel in Egypt is second only to Messiah in drama. It is dominated by massive virtuosic choruses, making it the perfect piece for The Sixteen. Hailstones and lightning, buzzing flies and leaping frogs are all brilliantly evoked for choir and orchestra. The epic nature of the story could not be more suited to Handel’s genius for storytelling and drama. This CD is based on the first published edition (1771), omitting five arias and two short choruses.

The vast power of the Royal Courts of England and Scotland may be long gone, but the sumptuous sounds of their worship are not lost. This disc brings together music of some outstanding but now little-known composers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and introduces a major new work by one of this century’s most remarkable composers. Robert Carver’s setting of the devotional text “O bone Jesu” has long been admired and has now proved an inspiration to James MacMillan as commissioned by The Sixteen.

· Brand-new recording from The Sixteen (recorded in 2006) features new editions and world premiere recordings · It was largely through the efforts of “Captain” Henry Cooke (c.1615–1672) that the choir of the Chapel Royal was successfully restored at the Restoration in 1660 · He invoked ancient press-gang legislation to purloin promising choirboys from cathedrals across the country. Two of them, Pelham Humfrey and John Blow, went on to write groundbreaking music · John Blow subsequently resigned his post as organist of Westminster Abbey in favor of his own pupil Henry Purcell, only to assume it again on Purcell’s untimely death · Cooke’s most important service to English church music was to put into practice Charles II’s explicit desire to have his royal anthems decked out with instrumental “symphonies” and interludes · The diarist Samuel Pepys regularly recorded the performances of Cooke’s novel new anthems by the Chapel Royal choir · Originally the Chapel Royal referred to a group of singers and clergy serving the spiritual needs of England’s sovereign, but later the term became attached to a building as well; several buildings, in fact, of which the Chapel Royal within St. James’s Palace, London (built 1702) is the one most often meant · The famed choir of the Chapel Royal achieved its zenith during the reign of Elizabeth I, when William Byrd and Thomas Tallis were both organists there · Advertising in Gramophone. CLASSICAL Monks of the Abbey of Notre Dame Gregorian Chant 26 selections of Gregorian Chant from Mass and Vespers One cannot speak of Gregorian Chant in the modern era without noting the pioneering work of the monks of the Abbey of Solesmes in France. In scholarship, and in preserving the chant in their monastic life, Solesmes has led the world. Many of the recordings made of the chant as the monks live it are widely available. While Solesmes has adapted the chant to the Novus Ordo Missal of Paul VI, one of its daughter houses, the French Abbey of Notre-Dame of Fontgombault, has retained the traditional Missal and thereby maintained the chant in its liturgical entirety. Fontgombault, together with many other traditional French Abbeys, has proved a success story. The monastic life is conducted strictly, vocations are plentiful, and guests leave the monastery uplifted by its spiritual and liturgical atmosphere. One priest visitor commented: “It’s like going to heaven.” Yet Fontgombault’s recordings of the chant, technically superior by far to their brethren’s at Silos, remain relatively unknown. This recording of Mass and Vespers was recorded to celebrate the ninth centenary of their Abbey Church.

Alexei Gorokhov was born in Moscow in 1927. His main violin teachers were L. Tseitlin and A. Yampolsky at the Moscow Conservatory, where he also received a degree in musicology. He won prizes at several international violin competitions and toured in the Soviet Union, Denmark, Sweden, and Romania. In 1957 he became a professor of violin at the Kiev Conservatory. These highly enjoyable performances were recorded 1973–78. The re-orchestrations and cadenzas for these works are by the artist, Alexei Gorokhov. Niccolò Paganini (1782–1840) revolutionized violin playing. He added one astounding new technique after another, until his performances were so amazing that many believed the rumor that he had signed over his soul to the Devil. The artist, capitalizing on his cadaverous frame and sunken cheeks, did nothing to discourage the idea. In the last ten years of his active career he became a sensation—a genuine superstar.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1924, Pnina Salzman began playing the piano soon after she learned to walk, and began performing in public at eight. Alfred Cortot, while on tour in Israel in 1932, heard her and invited her to study in Paris under his personal supervision. In Paris, Pnina Salzman studied with Magda Tagliaffero at the Conservatoire National de Musique, where she won the Prix de Piano at age fourteen. About the same time, Bronislav Huberman (the famous violinist & founder of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra), who attended one of her concerts in Paris, announced that it was a once in a lifetime experience to meet such talent, and recommended that she be engaged as a soloist with the IPO. Pnina Salzman was invited to play three piano concertos (in one evening) with the orchestra. This marked the beginning of a long association with the IPO. In Israel she is affectionately known as “The First Lady of the Piano.”

· Cio-Cio San (Madame Butterfly) has long been one of the very best roles of the great soprano Renata Scotto. In fact, in recent decades she has virtually owned it! · In her prime, Scotto had the unique ability to lighten her voice to sound convincingly young and innocent, and then to focus her tone at other times to command the full impact of the dramatic climaxes · This live 1967 recording finds the soprano at the height of her powers both as singer and actress particularly suited to this vivid role · Many opera lovers find this supercharged live performance superior in impact to Scotto’s studio recording, famous as it is

· Live broadcast, Turin, September 19, 1969 · Riccardo Zandonai (1883–1944) is a fascinating figure in the later history of traditional Italian opera. Long regarded by many as the putative heir to Puccini, just as Puccini was considered to have inherited the mantle of Verdi, Zandonai has managed to maintain a strong reputation mainly in Italy, although his most famous work, Francesca da Rimini, has been revived at the Metropolitan Opera with considerable success · Conchita’s storyline has strong parallels to Carmen. Conchita, too, is a flirtatious worker in a Seville cigarette factory. Zandonai’s score has a “strong sense of the picturesque, with many Spanish touches which at times parallel Falla rather than recalling Bizet.” —VIKING OPERA GUIDE · Zandonai came from a poor family and showed musical talent as a child; he began composing at age eight, and at fifteen entered the Rossini Lyceum at Pesaro where he studied with Mascagni · Despite his studies with Mascagni, Zandonai never fully espoused the verismo school of “realism” in Italian composing, although it is frequently noticeable in Conchita. He was generally closer to the Impressionists in spirit, though he cannot be said to be of the school of Debussy and Ravel, or even Respighi · His musical language is firmly traditional, but with opulent or piquant effects of orchestration superimposed to create a strong sense of poetic atmosphere · At age twenty-four he was befriended by Arrigo Boito, sometime composer and librettist to Verdi, and well-connected in the music publishing world. Boito recommended Zandonai to the publisher Tito Ricordi, who commissioned an opera that showed promise at its premiere in 1908. A second opera, Conchita, was even more successful, being produced both in Milan and San Francisco
“MacNeil was one of the last of the true dramatic Verdi baritones, and the end of his career left a void that is still unfilled.” — ALL MUSIC GUIDE
Cornell MacNeil, Renata Scotto, Richard Tucker, Noemi Souza, William Wildermann, et al., vocal soloists/Orchestra & Chorus of Teatro Colón, Argentina/Fernando Previtali, conductor Verdi: Rigoletto (Complete Opera)
· Live performance, Buenos Aires, August 22, 1967 · Although many of Verdi’s nearly thirty operas remain popular, Rigoletto, his seventeenth, is among the most beloved. Though its story is grim, and even gruesome at the end, its music is so memorable, so dramatically powerful, that it sweeps the listener along with it · This exciting live performance features some of the finest singers of its era, including Renata Scotto, one of the great Italian singers of her generation, and beloved American tenor Richard Tucker · Cast in the title role is a baritone who was once a well-known name on the operatic scene, and one of the most famous Rigolettos, but who is curiously forgotten by many today · Born in Minneapolis in 1922, Cornell MacNeill began his career singing Broadway musicals, but turned to opera with the New York City Opera in 1953 · His Metropolitan Opera debut took place in 1969 as Rigoletto. Over the years he would sing twenty-six different roles at the Met, in over five hundred performances · Although not considered a great actor, MacNeil had a sonorous, rolling baritone that thrilled audiences with the splendor of its ring · He was especially admired in the major Verdi roles, but he also triumphed in verismo parts such as Michele in Puccini’s Il tabarro and Gianciotto in Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini, the latter televised to a worldwide audience

4-Movie Christian 2-Pak
The Red Skelton Show – six 1/2 hour episodes Red Skelton’s show was one of the longest-running and most successful variety series on television. Making its debut in 1951 and running for more than twenty years, each episode featured comedy skits, gags, and vignettes starring Skelton and guest performers.
Celebrity-studded casts highlight these richly portrayed biblical stories! This DVD 2-pak includes the following sword-andsandal epics: 1960’s Esther and The King starring vivacious Joan Collins and Richard Egan; 1961’s David & Goliath starring Orson Welles and Kronos; 1962’s Old Testament starring bodybuilder & stuntman Brad Harris, Susan Paget, and Margaret Taylor; and 1966’s Gideon and Samson starring Fernando Rey, Rosalba Neri, and Ivo Garrani.
You Bet Your Life – fourteen 1/2 hour episodes Groucho Marx was the star of this game show, which began on radio in 1947. Although it was supposedly a quiz show, its most important asset was the interviews Groucho did with the contestants—who were picked primarily on the potential they had to be fodder for his jokes!
