Selling Points · A swinging program of big band jazz from the SWR Big Band—destined to be another Grammy winner for the band! · Saxophonist/composer/arranger Frank Foster, born in Cincinnati in 1928, is one of the last prominent exponents who played a substantial role in the success of Count Basie’s legendary orchestra both as soloist and arranger · Besides Neal Hefti and Quincy Jones, it was particularly Frank Foster and Thad Jones (celebrated on this CD) who determined the distinctive sound of the Basie Band with their arrangements in the fifties and sixties. After Basie’s death in 1984, Foster advanced to the position of the new bandleader of the Basie Organization from 1986 until 1995 · Frank Foster’s engagement as a guest conductor for the SWR Big Band (then called the SDR Big Band) took place within the context of a production and concert series created in the late nineties by then-SDR jazz producer Hans Thomas

“Eric Burdon, the former leader of the Animals, is back with a stunning new disc. The Brit who helped reintroduce Americans to the blues in the early sixties with classics like ‘House of the Rising Sun’ fills these fourteen tracks with his big, bad baritone, echoing the wisdom in the saying: it’s the singer, not the song.” — NEW YORK POST

Selling Points · Eric Burdon was the legendary lead vocalist of the Animals, who had more hit records than any other British R&B group of the sixties except the Rolling Stones · Burdon relocated to California in the late sixties and became a leader of the West Coast psychedelic scene. He discovered the group War and recorded with them from 1969–1971 before going solo in the mid-seventies and recording prolifically for the next three decades · A great companion to his new hit CD Soul of a Man, Wild & Wicked includes live recordings from Los Angeles’s Roxy in 1976 and rare studio recordings from an unreleased soundtrack to an unreleased film

Selling Points “Born and raised to play the blues” pretty much sums up the life and times of keyboardist, songwriter, and producer Barry Goldberg, who the Los Angeles Times once described as “the greatest blues organist in the world.” The tracks on Chicago Blues Union were recorded between 1964 and 1965 and feature Charlie Musselwhite, Eddie Hoh, Bobby Jones, Roy Ruby, Mike Bloomfield, and Harvey “The Snake” Mandel.
Freddie King was one of the linchpins of modern blues guitar. Although originally from Texas, King spearheaded Chicago’s modern blues movement in the early sixties, and helped set the stage for the blues-rock boom of the late sixties. The first eight tracks here were recorded live at the Texas Opry House in 1976, accompanied by the Bugs Henderson Band. The others were recorded live in Texas and Oklahoma.

Selling Points · First-ever complete Eldridge Holmes release features legendary recordings produced by Allen Tousaint and includes the cream of New Orleans musicians (Meters, Neville Bros., Dr. John, and more) · Born in New Orleans in 1942, Eldridge Holmes recorded almost exclusively with producer Allen Tousaint from 1962-1972 · 1960s New Orleans was full of incredible singers who didn’t achieve the fame they deserved outside that city. Eldridge Holmes, one of the most soulful vocalists to record in the Crescent City, is also one of it’s most obscure. Between 1962 and 1972 he recorded just over thirty soul and funk sides, many among the best to come out of the city (Funky16Corners) · His music encompassed R&B, pop, gospel, country, and more. After 1972 there is no evidence that Holmes ever recorded again before he passed away (Funky16Corners) · Considered by soul music scholars to be one of the greatest southern singers of the genre to come out of New Orleans, Holmes recorded for Alon, Jet Set, Desu, Sansu, Decca, Atco, Brown Sugar, Kansu, and Pama in his ten-year career before succumbing to heart disease in 1998 · Eldridge Holmes is long overdue for a proper tribute!

The birth of Echo Helstrom is a blessing. — PORTLAND TRIBUNE
Press Quotes “With Ross Seligman’s voice and guitar (most often acoustic) mixing with the violin, the songs have a bit of a symphonic quality that the stringed instrument inevitably brings, but it’s done in a very unique, poppy setting that brings to mind the mid-nineties college-rock of bands like REM and Sordid Humor with a more modern, soaring quality that’s highly infectious … beautiful and catchy all at once, clearly evident of more stellar releases to come.” — DELUSIONS OF ADEQUACY “Consider them your geek art band of the week that just might stick around … everyone from the White Stripes to the Moody Blues seems to wander through this disc at one point or another as the band veers from arena rock to rural folk, chamber music to postmodernism.” — SPLENDID “Rock enough for the parents currently subjected to their children’s emo band of the week, indie enough for the kids tired of hearing their forty-something parents blasting Wilco on NPR.” — REBEL X

Selling Points · Echo Helstrom has been called an “orchestral rock band” due to their instrumentation and wild arrangements, and their new album runs the gamut of genres, from chamber music to punk rock and everything in between · Echo Helstrom is not quite straight-ahead rock or the latest pop band in the Top 40, but rather a unique combination of your favorite band with a symphony · Echo Helstrom may have an incomparable sound, but their influences are apparent, ranging from Radiohead and Coldplay to Neil Finn and Ireland’s Donal Lunny · Vocalist/guitarist Ross Seligman is also a member of Blanket Music (HUSH Records) · U.S. tours throughout Fall/Winter 2006 · Publicity campaign by XO Publicity · Radio, e-media, and MySpace publicity

“If you’ve followed David Zinman’s Beethoven symphony cycle, this will need little introduction or special pleading from me. This is a tremendous disc that I’ve already played many times. Yefim Bronfman is a superb pianist and in Zinman he has a partner who has the ability to make this music sound dangerously new. Well worth its very modest price!” — GRAMOPHONE EDITOR’S CHOICE, DECEMBER 2005 [ANO 640100, CONCERTOS 3 & 4] “These are sensational performances. They have everything: drama, poetry, and a real point of view … the result is a wonderfully combustible mixture that marries style and spontaneity, discipline and improvisational freedom in a true partnership of equals. This, after all, is what a classical concerto is all about. Exceptionally natural sonics allow the musical excellence of the readings to speak for itself. A marvelous disc!” — CLASSICSTODAY, 10/10 RATING [ANO 640100, CONCERTOS 3 & 4] Yefim Bronfman, piano/Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich/Swiss Chamber Choir/ David Zinman, conductor BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat, Op. 73 “Emperor” · Choral Fantasy in C minor, Op. 80 · Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Op. 112
Ludwig van BEETHOVEN · Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1958, Yefim Bronfman immigrated to Israel at the age of thirteen and later to the U.S., where he pursued his training at the Juilliard School and the Marlboro and Curtis Institutes under Rudolf Serkin, Rudolf Firkusny, and Leon Fleisher · Bronfman celebrated his international debut in 1975, accompanied by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Zubin Mehta. He soon acquired an excellent reputation as a pianist on the stages of the world’s major concert halls · Highlights of recent years include concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, and the Vienna Philharmonic · Other long-term musical partners include Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Lynn Harrell, Shlomo Mintz, and Pinchas Zukerman · Born in 1936, American conductor David Zinman has risen to the pinnacle of his career in the last decade. After bringing the Baltimore Symphony to major status, he became musical director of the Aspen Music Festival and then took the helm of Zurich’s beloved Tonhalle Orchestra · Zinman’s discography of some one hundred recordings has won five Grammys and two Grands Prix du Disque · Ever since 1999, when the Tonhalle Orchestra was awarded the German Record Critics’ Award for its seminal recording of all Beethoven’s symphonies, the oldest symphony orchestra in Switzerland has been the focus of international interest · Beethoven’s “Emperor” concerto is the most dramatic of his five piano concertos, and one of the most popular in the entire genre. First performed in 1812, it is still a concert staple · First-time listeners to Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy are inevitably taken aback by its similarities to the far more famous final movement of the Ninth Symphony, and indeed it was to become a sort of model or study for that magnificent finale · Seldom heard in concert today, Beethoven’s dramatic choral piece Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage was composed in 1814/15 to two poems by Goethe and dedicated to the great German poet, who received a copy of the score from Beethoven in 1822, the year of its first performance

This CD brings together compositions from slightly more than a hundred years, featuring treatments of the “railroad” theme—now idyllic or impressionistic, now realistic or even smacking of social criticism, but in classical form. The feeling of intoxication induced by sheer speed, the implacability of mechanical forces, the menace inherent in acceleration, the clatter of the wheels, the whistling and hooting of the valves, but also the stillness following a thunderous journey—all these are found with varying degrees of accentuation in the colorful and exciting orchestral works featured on this disc. A highly enjoyable, thematic program, presented with great enthusiasm by the Kaiserslautern ensemble.

Bruckner had started to compose his Ninth Symphony immediately after finishing his Eighth in August of 1887. This work took up more than nine years of his life. Bruckner worked longer on it than on any of his other symphonies, yet never finished it. The work is, as the Bruckner scholar Manfred Wagner expresses it, a “compendium generale” of the composer’s life work, bringing together all he had previously accomplished. The late Carlo Maria Giulini was one of the twentieth century’s greatest orchestral conductors, and rare recordings like this one are in high demand by collectors. Over the years Giulini held posts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and Los Angeles Philharmonic, and worked with many others. Although for many years an outstanding conductor of Italian opera, from 1967 onwards Giulini decided to focus instead on the concert repertory, where he could have more control and less need for compromise. In this performance, recorded live in September of 1996, the legendary conductor’s Bruckner tends to be long-breathed and glowing. Giulini is an absolute master of the difficult transitions and uses slight, natural-sounding fluctuations in tempo.

The Symphony in Three Movements was composed during the height of WWII (1942–45) and reflects the composer’s impressions, mostly gained through cinematic representations, of the ongoing war. The Symphony in C was composed during one of the darkest periods in Stravinsky’s life—years marked by illness and the death of his mother, his wife, and a daughter. However, in trying to focus on formal concerns in the music, Stravinsky tried to keep his personal feelings out of the symphony. The first two movements were composed in Europe and reflect more of a traditional style. The third and fourth movements were composed after Stravinsky moved to America and herald his growing experiments with rhythmic meter change. The final composition on this CD, Symphony of Psalms, is based on various Psalms from the Bible and consists of three parts. The score’s inscription à la gloire de Dieu, “to the glory of God,” reveals Stravinsky’s purpose for the work. Born in Dresden in 1927 but reared in Argentina, in the 1950s Michael Gielen began to gain a reputation as a conductor of both the Viennese classics and contemporary music, of which he is now an acknowledged master. His mastery of twentieth century idioms is unquestioned. 8% ALLEGRO RESTOCK DEAL [OCTOBER 2, 2006 – OCTOBER 30, 2006]

BRAHMS: Alto Rhapsody, Op. 53 · “Auf dem Meere” (final chorus) from Rinaldo, Op. 50 · SCHUBERT: Gesang der Geister über den Wassern, D.714
· German conductor Helmuth Rilling (b. 1933) has long been acknowledged as one of the world’s experts on the music of J.S. Bach. He founded the Gächinger Kantorei in 1954 and gained an international reputation · Often referred to as “the master-singers of Stuttgart,” the Gächinger Kantorei are distinguished from other choirs by requiring superior music training of all candidates for membership, and by suiting themselves to the requirements of the works to be performed, from twenty-four to over one hundred singers. Its members come from all over southwest Germany and the German-speaking regions of Switzerland · The choir has played a considerable part in the rediscovery and representation of the Romantic choral repertoire, especially works by Brahms and Mendelssohn · Since 1965 Helmuth Rilling has also been conductor of the Stuttgart Bach Collegium and has toured with both ensembles around the world · Maestro Rilling presents a program of sweeping German Romanticism inspired by the works of Goethe and represented by the immortal Alto Rhapsody of Brahms, Schubert’s Gesang der Geister über den Wassern, and an excerpt from the Brahms rarity Rinaldo · Rilling and his Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart are joined by the world-class talents of alto Lioba Braun and tenor Carsten Süss in performances that unquestionably establish Rilling as the preeminent interpreter of the Germanic choral tradition · This program is further evidence of the continuing vitality of Helmuth Rilling’s musical concept as well as the relevance of Goethe for the twenty-first century · Destined to become one of the great choral discs of the decade, this album will be a most valuable addition to any choral music collection · Towards the end of the 1860s, Brahms was lodging with the Schumann family and began to realize a growing affection for Clara’s daughter, Julie. On subsequently being told that Julie was engaged to be married to an Italian count, Brahms’s reaction was to turn to composition as a solace and to set a piece for contralto, his favorite voice. The result was the Alto Rhapsody, two anguished verses of Goethe set to music of intense yearning · Written in 1820, Gesang der Geister über den Wassern (Song of the Spirits Above the Waters) is one of Schubert’s most complex choral works, a virtuoso setting of a poem by Goethe for eight-part men’s chorus and low strings. The poem is part Romantic mysticism and part dramatic description of nature, with waterfalls gushing forth from rocky crags and tumbling over stones & boulders until the water gathers into a gentle stream flowing into the glassy sea · The cantata Rinaldo is among the largest of Brahms’s works for vocal and orchestral forces. Indeed, only Ein deutsches Requiem surpasses it in length and breadth, and yet it is almost never heard today · Completed in 1868, Rinaldo is again a setting of Goethe, with a theme taken from the time of the Crusades. The closing chorus, presented on this album, is its most famous highlight

This 2-CD collection features the complete instrumental introductory Sinfonias and Sonatas for the Cantatas of J.S. Bach. While many of these movements have come down to us in versions as violin or harpsichord concertos, Bach would as often rearrange pre-existing works for use in his cantatas. The breathless Prelude for the Third Partita for solo violin would be transformed into a festive score with trumpets, drums, oboes, and organ, and even the Third Brandenburg Concerto would be recycled as the Sinfonia to Cantata No. 174. All performances and recordings taken from the multi-award winning Edition Bachakademie.

Throughout her career she appeared with leading orchestras and such conductors as Paul Paray, Felix Weingartner, George Enescu, Hermann Scherchen, Louis Auriacombe, Milan Horvat, and Georges Sebastian, and in recitals with Pablo Casals, Pierre Fournier, George Enescu, and Edwin Fischer · Gianoli was featured several times in performances at the Strasbourg and Lucerne Festivals, and made numerous recordings for the Westminster, BAM and Ades labels. In 1947 she was appointed professor of piano at the École Normale de Musique in Paris · These live recordings were made between 1947 and 1955 · Although Reine Gianoli is not a “household name” among pianists like Horowitz and Rubinstein, she has a very active and ever-growing cult following who look forward to any new releases of her hard-to-find recordings · Mozart’s seventeen piano sonatas are cornerstones of the keyboard literature. Often deceptively simple to play (the sonata in C, K.545 is affectionately known to students as “the beginner’s sonata”), they are full of poetry, humor, and drama · Reine Gianoli thankfully avoids the trap of treating these works like fragile china, as was once the tradition; she plays them for their full red-blooded qualities · These monumental recordings in the Legendary Treasures series have been re-mastered in excellent twenty-bit DLC® sound

Lyrita Returns To The American Marketplace! This Month’s Featured Composer: Edmund Rubbra (1901–1986) Lyrita Recorded Edition is one of the UK’s longestestablished and most highly regarded independent Classical record labels. Few independents have specialized in British music to the extent Lyrita has—and none with Lyrita’s devotion and flair! Lyrita founder Richard Itter produced a remarkable catalogue, which includes many world premieres and composer-conducted recordings. His pioneering efforts on behalf of the major twentieth century English composers Arnold, Alwyn, Bax, Finzi, Holst, and Ireland (to name only the most familiar) set a benchmark for technical quality and musical judgment. Lyrita also shed international light on composers previously known mostly in England, such as the skillful symphonist Edmund Rubbra. As a child, Rubbra gave a complete piano concert of Cyrill Scott’s works and impressed Scott so much with this performance that he accepted Rubbra as a private student. Through Scott, Rubbra met and began to study with Gustav Holst and later Ralph Vaughan Williams. Rubbra’s uncertain career gained momentum and respect after the completion of his first three symphonies. These symphonies’ premieres caused such a rumble that they were enough to establish his position among the top contemporary British composers. The third symphony, Rubbra’s breakthrough, was for years in the active repertory of orchestral programs in the UK. “Commentators have noted a certain Sibelian cut to its opening idea but everything else strikes you as being completely personal,” says Gramophone’s Good CD Guide. It is a very genial work, filled with lovely pastoral tones, and featuring a brilliant variations and fugue in its finale. Active service in World War II forced Rubbra to delay the completion of his fourth symphony until 1942. Appropriately, Rubbra conducted its premiere performance in military dress. The fourth symphony, also featured on this month’s Rubbra release, exemplifies many of his compositional techniques. The Penguin Guide calls the opening of the symphony “among the most beautiful in all English music of our time.” The first movement begins with a germinal phrase, which reappears in varying transformations creating a focused, cohesive effect. This is the symphony in which Rubbra, afraid he was sounding too much like his teacher, broke away from the “Holst sound” and really established his own voice. Rubbra went on to complete eleven symphonies, which are among the most significant contributions to the twentieth century repertory. Last month, the release of LYR 235 featured Symphonies 2 & 7, and early next year LYR 234 will bring us Symphonies 6 & 8. These are essential recordings for any collector of twentieth century symphonies.

“This music possesses eloquence and nobility, and clearly tells of deep and serious things. Let me say that the performances by the Philharmonia under Norman Del Mar are as dedicated as their earlier accounts of the Sixth and Eighth Symphonies. The recorded sound is pretty much state-of-the-art, with superb clarity and presence and transparent well-defined textures. This is an important issue and is strongly recommended.” — GRAMOPHONE Philharmonia Orchestra/Norman Del Mar, conductor RUBBRA: Symphony No. 3, Op. 49 · A Tribute, Op. 56 · Overture Resurgam, Op. 149 · Symphony No. 4, Op. 53
· Edmund Rubbra (1901–1986) was a fundamentally conservative English composer of working-class origins who wrote large symphonic works that seem at once very much of their time and place, and yet universal in appeal · Rubbra began piano study at the age of eight, but at fourteen was compelled to take a job as a railway clerk · At age sixteen he gave a recital of the music of Cyril Scott, a British composer he much admired at that age, and hearing of it Scott took the young lad as a private pupil · Rubbra went on to win a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where he studied composition with Gustav Holst and wrote his first works · In later years Rubbra lectured at Oxford University and taught composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama · His eleven symphonies, along with other works, have been growing steadily in public awareness and appreciation since his death, and he has developed a strong, almost cult, following · Conductor Norman Del Mar, who began his career as assistant to Sir Thomas Beecham, specialized in British composers and made more than seventy recordings

Alan Rawsthorne (1905–1971) is perhaps the only notable composer who started a career as a dentist. Tiring of teeth, he turned to music but didn’t achieve any recognition until age thirty-three. His twenty-six film scores eventually made him wealthy, but he wrote also a fine body of concert works.
Arnold Bax was unique among British composers in creating a sound world that evokes a wild, romantic, legendary landscape. His seven symphonies are all pictures of northern seas and forests, bathed in mystical light. The Seventh (1939) rounds off the series with a serene, autumnal epilogue.

Mozart’s final composition, the Requiem, remains one of his most beloved works and one of the great choral works of all time. This fresh, inspiring performance features middleEuropean artists whose talents were long obscured behind the Iron Curtain. Immediately after its foundation (in 1992 as the “Philharmonia Romania” by its principal conductor, Wolfgang Gröhs), critics praised the Europa Symphony for its extraordinary sonority and transparency, as well as its well balanced sound and dynamic. The orchestra is composed of the best Romanian orchestral musicians and benefits from support by the Austrian government. Since 1994, the orchestra has been known by the name of Europa Symphony, indicating on one hand its international alignment and on the other hand expressing its intense collaboration with artists and orchestra instrument players of the whole of Europe. The orchestra plays periodically in Romania, participates in numerous festivals, and collaborates with soloists of international reputation.

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975), though one of the most original of Russian modernists, was accused in such works as the Symphony No. 11 (1957) of bowing to official demands and restrictions upon his art. Indeed, at first glance, the title of this massive work brings to mind those state-inspired spectacles so highly prized by Soviet cultural officialdom during the years of Communist domination. In four tableaus the work reflects the events of the tragically unsuccessful revolution of 1905, in which the participants were slaughtered unmercifully by Czarist troops, an event which provided the composer with some of the starkest and strongest feelings imaginable. David Montgomery was the last pupil of the legendary conductor René Leibowitz. He made his debut in 1969 at the Schoenberg Festival in Lyon. That same year he began his work as associate conductor with the Santa Fe Opera. Numerous appearances as conductor and pianist in Europe and the United States followed. His film debut took place at Columbia Pictures as conductor in 1993 and—behind the scenes— as historical consultant for Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence.

In exile in Switzerland following the turmoil attendant on the Russian Revolution and forced by the aftermath of World War I to make a virtue out of the unavoidable shortage of means, Igor Stravinsky created something extraordinary, marking the beginning of modern music theatre: The Soldier’s Tale—to be read, played and danced (1918). He worked in lively and amicable cooperation with the librettist Charles Ferdinand Ramuz; with René Auberjonois, the painter responsible for the set design; and finally with conductor Ernest Ansermet. The content of the economical and clearly articulated work is based on folk tales from the collection by the Russian author Alexander Afanasiev (for example, The Deserter and the Devil), but is also reminiscent of the Orpheus myth, in which music has power over life and death. A Faustian conflict is played out in the world of itinerant theatre companies and traveling entertainers: a young, credulous soldier fatefully sells his violin to the devil, causing him to fall under the latter’s diabolic spell and be lured down to hell. Another excellent recording from Ross Pople and the London Festival Orchestra. 8% ALLEGRO RESTOCK DEAL [OCTOBER 2, 2006 – OCTOBER 30, 2006]

The repertoire of this CD is intended to give an example of the skills of the Rubin Quartet while still demonstrating their expertise in as many different stylistic areas as possible. After three familiar works from the Classical, Late Romantic, and Second Viennese schools, this CD ends with a piece by the contemporary composer Jean-Christophe Feldhandler (b. 1962), in which notes, extent, dynamic, development, and even symmetry come into their own. It was written as the first part of a trilogy (with differently arranged parts) and was first performed on the occasion of the 1994 Festival in Nancy by the Rubin Quartet (to whom it is also dedicated). When founding the Rubin Quartet in 1992, four female musicians from Cologne, Paris, and Amsterdam had in mind the ruby, the key to all hearts. Since then, playing in the quartet has been the center of their lives and their work has produced a widely varied range of concerts, awards, and CD recordings.

In 1909 Maurice Ravel received a commission from the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev for a ballet for his already legendary ensemble, the Ballets Russes, which had just completed its first successful season in Paris. The idea and scenario for Daphnis et Chloé were from Mikhail Fokine, Diaghilev’s former star choreographer, who turned to an antique Greek shepherd romance as subject. The premiere took place in 1912, at the Théâtre du Châtelet, with only modest success. The music to Daphnis et Chloé finally found triumph in form of the two orchestral suites, which Ravel formed from the most important of the ballet’s themes and brought to performance in 1911 and 1913. Daphnis et Chloé, which he preferred to call a “choreographic symphony,” is Ravel’s greatest work for the stage and numbers among his most impressive works overall. The main aim of the SWR Symphony Orchestra since it was founded in 1946 has been to increase audience awareness not only of the symphonic repertoire of the past two centuries but also of the music of the twentieth century.

Mendelssohn’s oratorio Paulus—besides the great oratorios of Handel and Haydn, and Bach’s Passions—counts among the most important works in the history of the genre, along with his own Elijah. Paulus was composed between 1834 and 1836, and the premiere took place in 1836 in Düsseldorf, bringing Mendelssohn his first European fame. The Bach Ensemble of the EuropaChorAkademie was founded in 1986 by Joshard Daus and, under his artistic directorship, has won an excellent reputation in the concert halls of Germany and abroad. For many years now Professor Joshard Daus has been considered an authority in the field of symphonic choral music. His regular musical collaboration with maestro Sergiu Celibidache, which began in 1986, led to his appointment as choral director of the Munich Philharmonic from 1990 to 1993. Mily Balakirev (1837–1910)—composer, pianist, conductor, arranger, teacher, organizer, and tireless champion of Russian music—was one of the most significant figures in his country’s musical history. With his brilliant and forceful personality he became the natural leader of a group of composers who became famous as the “Mighty Handful”: Borodin, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui, and himself. Balakirev was a complete master of the art of piano writing, a rarity among Russian composers, and his sadly neglected works are in urgent need of revival. Julian Jacobson’s career has been almost as varied as that of Balakirev; he is a solo pianist, ensemble and duo partner, composer and arranger, conductor, and teacher. In 2003 his marathon performance of all thirty-two Beethoven piano sonatas in a single day (repeated in 2004) attracted international media coverage as well as great critical and public enthusiasm. He has recorded more than a hundred solo works for the BBC as well as several solo albums for Meridian, and has toured in over thirty countries on five continents.

“I am sure he will like the Trio and the Quartet,” wrote Mozart to his sister in June 1788 of the works on this recording, asking her to play them to Michael Haydn (brother of Joseph). Mozart himself loved playing chamber music, as both a pianist and string player, and this must have been an important reason why he wrote such original and vital music in this genre. Mozart’s enthusiasm is reflected in our time in the remarkable career of pianist Diana Ambache, who has specialized for years in the music of Mozart, made seven CDs of his music, and founded the Ambache Chamber Orchestra to play it. The Ambache Chamber Ensemble, founded in 1984, is an offshoot of the orchestra and consists of its principals; it too plays only the music of Mozart and his contemporaries. Over the years the group has given regular performances at St. John’s Smith Square and the South Bank, and recorded several Mozart CDs for the Meridian label. They toured the U.S. in 1987. Diana Ambache herself has toured extensively internationally, performing in thirty-three countries on five continents.

MOZART: Symphony No. 41 in C, K.551 “Jupiter” · Clarinet Concerto in A, K.622 · Overture to Le nozze di Figaro
Although the artists on this recording are not widely familiar outside of Italy, Stradivarius decided to release this album in view of the exceptional artistic quality of the performances, which have continued to win admiration since the original concert of November 6, 1999, held in the Teatro Regio in Parma. This was a presentation of the Italian Mozart Association, which that season offered a cycle of Mozart concertos and other works including his seldom-heard stage piece Il sogno di Scipione.

The present recording of works by Alessandro Solbiati and Massimo Botter is dedicated to the “unquiet spirits.” This music throws open the door onto visions that are as boldly grandiose as they are, perhaps, out of step with the present time: the gothic, luminous sense of space present at sacred sites and the forgotten immensities of nature. Solbiati and Botter each avoid writing music that merely consoles and tempers the soul. Be it sacred or secular, the unquiet is not something to get rid of in the name of fulfillment, but is the principle that generates life.

BUSSOTTI: Fragmentations · Labirinti
Sylvano Bussotti (b. 1931) has long been considered one of the most controversial of all contemporary composers. He is best known for his wildly theatrical works, for which he coined the term “Bussottioperaballet,” so it is all the more intriguing to come upon an album of music for the harp! Composed in 1962, Fragmentations is unique in that one performer plays two instruments, each tuned differently. Labirinti, written 1987–1992, was dedicated to Alain Danièlou, painter, musicologist, philosopher, and writer; it is an outstanding example of Bussotti’s ability to create subtle shades of tone color and sophisticated ideas.

· Founded by Sigiswald Kuijken in 1972 to explore Baroque orchestral practice, La Petite Bande quickly established the performance standards for all who followed · Noted for their impeccable artistry, attention to detail, and refined stylish musicianship, La Petite Bande have impressed audiences and critics throughout the world with their “new” interpretations · The orchestra takes its name and constitution from Lully’s own orchestra at the court of Louis XIV. All its members are internationally renowned specialists in the early music field · The German motets by J.S. Bach were written for specific occasions. They form part of the German a cappella tradition, in which the instruments play colla parte—that is, doubling the vocal parts · Bach’s motets are among the high points of his output. We are told that when Mozart inspected the handwritten parts during his visit to Leipzig, he was moved to tears · Some historical research has suggested that Bach never had more than eight singers at his disposal, even for double-choir pieces, and so Sigiswald Kuijken has chosen to assign only one singer per part in this recording of the motets. Maestro Kuijken feels that the smaller vocal quartet greatly improves the clarity of the musical lines · Many recordings of the Bach motets include the four-part motet “Lobet den Herren, alle Heiden,” but it has not been included here because Maestro Kuijken has serious doubts about its authorship

When a new building, the Artisten, was erected for the School of Music at Gothenburg, Sweden in 1988, three organs were commissioned, the principal one being a nineteenth-century-style French symphonic organ of forty-three registers in the style of the great organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The result, built by the Dutch Verschueren firm, is one of the finest instruments in its class in the world. All the works on this album were written for exactly this type of instrument, and are performed by Holland’s greatest living organist, Jacques van Oortmerssen, a former student of the legendary Marie-Claire Alain and successor to Gustav Leonhardt at the Waalse Kerk in Amsterdam.
Franz SCHUBERT Winterreise Thomas Oliemans, baritone/Bert van den Brink, piano SCHUBERT: Winterreise (“Winter Journey”) (complete cycle of 24 songs)
Schubert’s cycle of twenty-four songs, Winterreise, is a powerfully eloquent, heartrending diary of the winter journey of a rejected lover, whose unquenchable pain leads him to quiet madness and a longing for death. The piano accompaniment is often vividly wrenching, suggesting falling leaves, growling dogs rattling their chains, or the ominous beating of the wings of a crow, yet Schubert’s pure harmonies keep the music well away from the edge of melodramatic hysteria. Born in Amsterdam in 1977, baritone Thomas Oliemans studied with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, among others. He is by now an experienced, prize-winning concert artist who recently recorded a successful CD of songs by Poulenc and Fauré. Pianist Bert van den Brink (b. 1958) is an accomplished artist in both classical music and jazz.

“I have been completely taken by Russian cellist Alexander Kniazev’s reworking of three of Mozart’s sonatas for violin and piano. Mozart has not only been transcribed for cello and piano; he has been Romanticized. And it works wonderfully well in these meltingly lovely performances by Kniazev and Russian pianist Edouard Oganessian. This is a special release, particularly if you already know this music. You will be surprised.” — CRISIS Alexander Kniazev, cello/Edouard Oganessian, piano MOZART: Violin Sonata in G, K.301 (tr.cello) · Violin Sonata in F, K.376 (tr. cello) · Violin Sonata in G, K.379 (tr. cello)

Although Mozart wrote no fewer than thirty-four sonatas for violin and keyboard, he didn’t compose even one for cello. Alexander Kniazev’s remarkable transcriptions of three of the violin sonatas for cello and piano go some way to remedying that deficiency. They transform the works, too: the cello brings out the rich, proto-Romantic sonorities implicit in the music.

Elena Suliotis, Piero Cappuccilli, et al., vocal soloists/Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, Milan/Gianandrea Gavazzeni, conductor CATALANI: Loreley (complete opera)
· This performance, recorded live at the La Scala opera house in Milan on February 13, 1968, is the only recording of this opera ever issued with complete libretto at mid-price · Alfredo Catalani (1854–1893) was long ignored internationally among the numerous Italian opera composers of the late nineteenth century · In recent years Catalani has become more familiar with a revival of interest in his masterpiece, La Wally, one aria from which has always had currency and which achieved even wider fame in recent years from its use in films and commercials · This has led to further explorations, including a revival of Catalani’s nextbest stage work, Loreley, the first of his operas to attract attention outside of Italy · Like La Wally, Loreley has always had one excerpt which has kept the opera’s title in circulation, the atmospheric “Dance of the Ondine” (also known as “Dance of the Water Spirits”) from Act III, occasionally heard in concert programs and on recordings of light Romantic orchestral music · Greek soprano Elena Suliotis was a musical “comet” whose first appearances in the late 1960s caused considerable critical excitement— a voice, the New York Times said, with “the potential for greatness” · After a short career, Suliotis developed vocal problems and her career was truncated. This is one of the rare recordings preserving that short period of vocal splendor that has become a modern legend

· Don Carlo has an unusual place in Verdi’s canon: it is one of his greatest operas, yet one of the least performed · Originally written in French as Don Carlos for the Paris Opéra in 1867, it is more often heard today translated back into Italian, as in this exciting performance recorded live in Vienna on October 25, 1970 · Verdi believed almost fanatically in the merit of the work, and his tinkering with it extended over a period of twenty years · Don Carlo is a work of overwhelming musical and dramatic impact when produced as on this 3-CD set, and once digested often becomes a favorite with anyone with a taste for Verdi · This is one of the most spectacular casts ever assembled on one stage for Don Carlo. Nicolai Ghiaurov was the leading bass of his era, Franco Corelli the most exciting Verdi tenor, and then-mezzo Shirley Verrett at the peak of her career; Verrett has remained for most opera fans the Princess Eboli on disc — a thrillingly dramatic portrayal

OPERA “Auber’s music has an irresistible snappiness, and the Offenbach-like energy of the exchanges is compelling … the patter songs (reminiscent of Rossini), sparkling coloratura, and decadent waltzes are beguilingly slick.” — ROUGH GUIDE TO OPERA Le domino noir: Janine Micheau, Joseph Peyron, Liliane Berthon, et al., vocal soloists/Lyric Orchestra & Chorus of Radio France/Jules Gressier, conductor/ Fra Diavolo highlights: Aldo Noni, Giuseppe Campora, Mitì Truccato Pace, Fernando Corena, et al., vocal soloists/RAI Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Milan/Alfredo Simonetto, conductor AUBER: Le domino noir (complete opera)
· A complete performance of Auber’s sparkling opera Le domino noir, plus highlights from another Auber opera, Fra Diavolo · Performances recorded live in Paris (1950) and Milan (1952) respectively · Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) produced a series of thirty-six operas, all in collaboration with the famous librettist Eugène Scribe, who also provided texts for Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and more · Le domino noir (“The Black Mask”) was one of the most successful of Auber’s many operas. First given on December 2, 1837 at the OpéraComique in Paris, it ran for some 1,000 performances until 1882, and is still revived often in France · Fra Diavolo (“Brother Devil”) is perhaps his best-known work today, and its famous Romance favorite, often known in English as “On Yonder Rock Reclining,” has long been a popular French encore · Janine Micheau was the most famous soprano in France in the immediate post-World War II era, in both lyric and coloratura roles. She had equally successful careers in opera and on the recital stage, starring at the Paris Opéra in the role of Mélisande in Debussy’s opera · Among the many interesting artists in these performances is Giuseppe Campora, perhaps one of the most underrated tenors of his generation. Campora did not have the vocal weight of a Domingo or Pavarotti, but he was distinguished by elegance of sound and a pure tone of great charm

· A live recording from Monaco in 1974 conducted by the legendary, elusive Carlos Kleiber · Kleiber never recorded Der Rosenkavalier commercially, and this live recording boasts very good sound · Born in 1930, the son of another fine conductor (Erich Kleiber), Carlos Kleiber is widely recognized as one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century. He had a cult following through much of his career, and since his death in 2004 it has only increased in intensity · He seldom appeared in public and was more famous for canceling appearances than making them. His behavior may have been eccentric, but his artistry was sublime · The premiere of the opera on January 26, 1911, at the Hofoper in Dresden, was a magnificent success, and Der Rosenkavalier’s luster has scarcely dimmed in the ensuing years. It remains the most popular and oft-performed opera by Richard Strauss, who in turn is the most famous German opera composer of the twentieth century · The music is a deft blend of Viennese schmaltz and modernisms, making the listener feel warm, comfortable, and dreadfully chic at the same time · Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874–1929) created seven librettos for Strauss, of which this was the second, achieving perhaps the most perfect operatic collaboration since Da Ponte and Mozart

For the director of such award-winning films as Grizzly Man and Woyzeck, the music is never an “add-on” but always an integral part of any creation, whether feature film or documentary · In 2004, Werner Herzog came to Munich to see Stefan Winter because he wanted to find some very special music for his films The Wild Blue Yonder and The White Diamond. Winter played him Ernst Reijseger’s recordings, and Herzog found what he was looking for · Herzog’s musical vision led to extraordinary recording sessions in Paris and Ludwigsburg with Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger, Senegalese vocalist Mola Sylla, and the Voches de Sardinna Tenore e Cuncordu de Orosei · An initially unlikely assemblage led to this powerful, unique, and extraordinary work. Uniting it with vintage recordings from Friedrich Händel’s “Dank sei dir Gott” featuring contralto Emmi Leisner, a very original score was produced · Ernst Reijseger and Stefan Winter remixed the music recorded for Herzog to create an autonomous album. The answer can be found on Jewface, consisting of Jewish minstrel songs that took vaudeville stages by storm at the turn of the twentieth century.
