“Cam Newton conveys a lust for life via passionate and primarily upbeat choruses that often bespeak a worldbeat groove amid peaceable melodies, layered strings, and soprano saxophonist Michael Bard’s dream-laden lines along with the intermittent injections of Far Eastern rhythmic structures … the artist’s often expressive, prismatic aural canvasses translate into ethereal, soothing, and moderately energetic motifs. Hence, fans of Shadowfax, the Paul Winter Consort, or perhaps Oregon may want to pay special attention to this affable and altogether attractive set.” — All About Jazz

“Amelia Cuni is one of the very few Westerners to have mastered the complexities of Indian vocal music … It is all more remarkable that she sings dhrupad, a style which is usually the exclusive province of men … Cuni is an excellent performer who explores the subtle nuances of each raga in extended alap sections and metered compositions. Her acute rhythmic control and fine sense of intonation lead to many inspired, beautiful, and surprising musical moments.” — Songlines “A clear, and typically multicultural, highlight was a captivating conceptual setting of Indian dhrupad vocalizing by Italian Amelia Cuni, in collusion with electronic manipulation by Werner Durand and elaborate projections by Uli Sigg … alternately sensual, bold, and contemplative.” — Los Angeles Times “Amelia Cuni is one of only a handful of Western women to seriously study dhrupad, an austere style of classical North Indian music; whatever the technical specs of her vocal control, she sounds like a master to me, but with a vulnerability that undercuts the machismo that is mastery’s trap … At times, these layers of voice and image began to flutter like rose petals in the winds of time, and without budging from his seat, this reviewer simply left the hall.” — The Wire “This is ‘crossover’ at its most fruitful, in which irregular dance rhythms come tumbling out against the nasal yet dusky singing of the Italian-born Cuni, whose voice makes a good case for reincarnation.” — The Times Amelia Cuni: dhrupad vocals Werner Durand: electronics Raymond Kaczynski: percussion Federico Sanesi: percussion CAGE: Solo for Voice 58: 18 Microtonal Ragas

WORLD PREMIE EMIERE PREMIERE RECORDING!
The world premiere recording of Solo for Voice 58 by legendary American avant-garde composer John Cage. American premiere concert November 2 in Berkeley, CA. • Italian-German dhrupad singer Amelia Cuni is the ideal interpreter, trained in classical Indian singing but also able to improvise on ragas in a new music context. Cuni has developed from Cage’s score of eighteen raga scales a remarkable and unique interpretation that belongs to both the classical Indian and Western experimental traditions. • Percussionists Ray Kaczynski and Federico Sanesi utilize both Eastern and Western instruments, and composer/performer Werner Durand performs both traditional Indian drones and specially-designed electronics. • Includes an extensive booklet with essays by Amelia Cuni, Indian music scholar and composer Sandeep Bhagwati, and Cage scholar William Brooks (University of York). • Long regarded by the musical establishment as a fringe figure, John Cage (1912– 1992) is widely regarded today as an anchor in the sea of modern music. Born in Los Angeles, Cage traveled to Europe in his late teens, then studied with Henry Cowell in New York and Arnold Schoenberg in L.A. • In the late 1940s he became interested in Eastern philosophies, especially Zen but also Hinduism, which influenced the composition of the work on this CD. In addition to composing, John Cage was a lecturer and performer in both Europe and the US, and wrote several books on his theories. Today much of his music, once considered bizarre, has entered the mainstream of contemporary culture. • Service to radio stations. Email to 3,000 Other Minds supporters. Press release to San Francisco arts media and major national arts media. Mailing to university music libraries.

Bach’s time. • Set to both Latin and German texts, these geistliche Konzerte are remarkable not only for their emotional and theatrical writing for the voice, but also for the close linking of the instrumental parts with the vocal lines. • Dieterich Buxtehude (ca. 1637–1707) was a Danish-born organist and composer of the German Baroque. Regarded at one time as mostly an influence on later composers, Buxtehude has risen steadily in modern estimation and is now considered the most important German composer between Schütz and Bach. •

Chamber Choir of Namur Les Agrémens Jean Tubéry: conductor PACHELBEL: Toccata in C • Motet: Jauchzet dem Herrn • Cantata: Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan • Partita: Was Gott tut das ist wohlgetan • Motet: Gott ist unser Zuversicht • Christ lag in Todesbanden • Cantata: Christ lag in Todesbanden • Fantasia in G • Cantata: Jauchzet dem Herrn Despite the universal fame of Johann Pachelbel’s beloved Canon in D, the tercentenary of his death went almost unnoticed in 2006. • The present recording of Pachelbel cantatas thus fills an important gap in the discography related to the history of religious music in Germany in the Baroque period. One happily discovers a composer immersed in the polyphonic practice of central Germany, close to the ancestors of J.S. Bach and well aware of new influences from Italy. • These compositions are organically linked to the melodies of Luther’s chorales, and by their shape and size constitute an obvious link between the seventeenth century and the first cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. • Johann Pachelbel (1653–1706) was a prominent composer and organist of his era. While working at the Eisenach court in Thüringen, he became a close friend of J.S. Bach’s father, Johann Ambrosius Bach. • As a parish musician, Pachelbel wrote most of his music for church services, especially for Mass and Vespers, when both singers and instrumentalists took part. His instrumental accompaniments are unusually rich. • Although much of Pachelbel’s music is lost, around twenty-six motets; nineteen “spiritual songs;” and thirteen Magnificats, geistliche Konzerte, and Masses have survived. •

JEAN-BAPTISTE STUCK Tirannique empire… Jean-François Novelli: bass/Arnaud Marzorati: baritone/Ensemble Les Lunaisiens STUCK: Impatience • Jealous Mars • Heraclitus and Democritus These three French cantatas were composed between 1706 and 1714 by Jean-Baptiste Stuck (1680–1755), also known as Batistin. • This is currently the only available recording of music by this long-neglected French Baroque composer. • Stuck came to Paris around 1705 and was for a long time well known as an opera composer. He was also one of the first cellists to make it popular as a solo instrument. • Many contemporaries considered his cantatas to be models of the genre. An editor of the time wrote that, “his cantatas brought him infinite honor.” •

GIAN DOMENICO DEL GIOVANE DA NOTA Alla Napoletana: Villanesche & Mascherate Suonare e Cantare/Jean Gaillard: conductor DEL GIOVANE DA NOTA: 20 selections of Napolitane, Villanesche, and Mascherate This program is structured around the figure of Gian Domenico del Giovane da Nota (1510– 1592), organist and later master of the church of the Annunciation in Naples. • In addition to a number of madrigals and motets, he left us one of the richest and most typical collections of Canzoni Villanesche (1545). These works, also known as Napolitane, were songs on popular themes, originally written for three voices in the Neapolitan dialect. • The program is enriched by a selection of varied instrumental pieces, featuring not only instruments that were fashionable during the Renaissance (recorders, post horns, reed instruments, violas, lutes, guitars, percussions, and bagpipes), but also typical Neapolitan instruments such as colascioni, tammorri, and tromba degli zingari (gypsy trumpet). •

TORU TAKEMITSU Songs Dominique Visse: countertenor/François Couturier: piano TAKEMITSU: 20 Songs While Takemitsu’s reputation as one of the 20th century’s greatest modernists is recognized around the world, his accomplishments as a songwriter are largely unknown outside of Japan. This recital displays his stylistic versatility and knowledge of popular song idioms. • Throughout his highly creative life, Toru Takemitsu (1930–1996) composed numerous concert works; over a hundred film scores; many incidental scores for radio, TV, and theater; a detective novel; and critical works on music, film, and literature. • He was a leading intellectual with an insatiable appetite for popular culture (especially film) and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of Western popular music. • The songs on this program come from all stages of Takemitsu’s creative life, from the 1950s to the year of his death, and each is a superbly crafted miniature—by turns tuneful, elegant, and fragile. • Ads with BBC Music magazine, Gramophone, and International Record Review. •

STRAVINSKY & DEBUSSY Les Ballets Russes, Vol. 1 SWR Symphony Orchestra, Baden-Baden & Freiburg/Sylvain Cambreling: conductor STRAVINSKY: Le Sacre du printemps • DEBUSSY: Jeux • DUKAS: La Péri Hänssler Classic is proud to present the first in a series of recordings dedicated to the music composed for Ballets Russes in performances under the expert musical direction of Sylvain Cambreling. • The Ballets Russes was established in 1909 by Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev, and created a sensation in Western Europe because of the great vitality and creativity of Russian ballet compared to what was current in France at the time. It became the most influential ballet company in the 20th century, and that influence has lasted to the present day. • The Ballets Russes featured sets and costumes designed by such artists as Braque, Picasso, Dali, and Utrillo and music by composers that included Debussy, Milhaud, Poulenc, Prokofiev, Ravel, Satie, and, most notably, Igor Stravinsky, whom Diaghilev spotted when he was virtually unknown and whose career he launched. • Ads with BBC Music magazine, Gramophone, and International Record Review. •

SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart Roger Norrington: conductor MOZART: Symphony No. 1 in E-flat, K.16 • Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K.183 • Symphony No. 41 in C, K. 551 “Jupiter” These Mozart symphonies were recorded in two weeks at the European Music Festival in Stuttgart in September 2006. More than twenty Mozart symphonies, ranging from his earliest to his last ten, were chosen to represent the superb range of his output. • As usual with the Stuttgart RSO, Maestro Norrington aimed to recreate as much as possible the playing style of the period. The exact orchestra size of each symphony at its first performance was used (the smallest was a mere eighteen players). • Roger Norrington founded the Schütz Choir in 1962, beginning a decades-long exploration of historical performance practice. He has made numerous recordings of 17th–19th century repertoire, first with the London Baroque, then with the London Classical Players. Norrington is currently chief conductor of the Stuttgart RSO and the Salzburg Camerata Academica. Since 1997 he has been associated with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, which took over from the London Classical Players. • Ads with BBC Music magazine, Gramophone, and International Record Review. •

Handel seems to have been especially moved by this particular text. He gives each of the five main soloists a distinctive profile, and even the vocal supporting roles are unique and intentionally individual. • In none of his other oratorios does Handel call for a more differentiated orchestra. Alongside the strings, he uses oboes, recorders, bassoons, trumpets, timpani, and trombones. • Helmuth Rilling has taught generations of choral directors, discovered of many of today’s most gifted singers, commissioned numerous masterworks from the great composers of our time, and been a tireless musical scholar, rescuing many glorious works from obscurity. Sir Henry Wood (1869–1944) is one of the most beloved figures in British musical history. For half a century he conducted the popular Promenade Concerts, which after his death were officially named the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts but today are called the BBC Proms. • Wood was influential in providing access to classical concerts to a working-class audience that had formerly been effectively excluded, and at the same time he greatly raised standards of orchestral playing in England. While introducing the public to a great range of orchestral music, he also championed music by living British composers. • His own orchestrations of instrumental music by famous composers were extremely popular in his day, but are seldom heard in our time. • Of special interest is Wood’s orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition, which he withdrew after Ravel’s version became more popular. • Ads with Gramophone. • •

JOHN JOUBERT Symphony No. 1 London Philharmonic Orchestra/Vernon Handley: conductor JOUBERT: Symphony No. 1, Op. 20 New recordings! CD single! John Joubert was born in 1927 in Cape Town, attended the Royal Academy of Music in London in the 1940s and ’50s, and has been based in Birmingham since 1962. • For years Joubert led a double career as academician and composer, but he took early retirement as a professor in 1986 in order to devote time exclusively to composition. Since retirement, he has completed two large-scale projects including the oratorio Wings of Faith. • Joubert’s music has a strong sense of melody. His First Symphony was commissioned in 1955 by the Hull Philharmonic Society and first performed the following year under the baton of Vilem Tausky. Although very much a youthful work, written when Joubert was still in his twenties, it nevertheless represents his coming-of-age as a composer. • •

Frank Bridge (1879–1941) is most often mentioned as the teacher of a later and more famous British composer, Benjamin Britten, but his own music has become more and more admired after a long period of neglect. • It was his orchestral music that suffered most; the suite The Sea was the only one of his fifteen major orchestral pieces to be performed with any regularity. Oration (1930) and Phantasm (1931) were Bridge’s most substantial orchestral works and his only concertos. J.S. BACH (arr. Eshpai): Goldberg Variations J.S. Bach’s apparently infinite resourcefulness of invention, as manifested by his enormously prolific output, is perhaps best summarized by one work: The Goldberg Variations. Oboist Dmitri Bulgakov became convinced of the capacity for the keyboard original to be arranged for a homogenous quartet featuring the oboe. Composer Andrei Eshpai was approached with this proposal, and the whole concept came to fruition in the form we hear on this disc.

No wonder, then, that even some of the kings and noblemen applied themselves to this creative field. Often, however, they preferred to remain anonymous in their compositions, so authorship cannot always be ascertained. • This CD features compositions by three medieval European kings: Richard I the LionHearted and Henry VIII of England, and Alfonso X “The Wise” of Spain. Also includes other pieces performed at courts or attached to life at court (dances, songs of troubadours and trouvères, and those dedicated to the rulers). • Richard the Lion-Hearted was the grandson of a famous troubadour and was reared among artists. Both Henry VIII and Alfonso X had good musical educations and were patrons of the arts. • Musica Antiqua Consort was founded by mezzo-soprano Vera Zlokovich after her groundbreaking research into the performance of old Orthodox liturgical chants. •

ALESSANDRO SCARLATTI Sinfonie da Concerto Grosso Accademia della Magnifica Comunità/Enrico Casazza: director A. SCARLATTI: Sinfonie da Concerto Grosso, Part 1, Nos. 1–6 • Flute Concerto in A minor Alessandro Scarlatti (1660–1725), father of the more famous Domenico, was an important composer of his era—mostly of vocal works, including over 700 secular cantatas, forty oratorios, and more than a hundred melodramas. Many discussions of the elder Scarlatti barely mention his instrumental music, but he did write some of great quality. • The twelve Sinfonie da Concerto Grosso, the first half of which are recorded here, are especially intriguing since they feature the flute. Scarlatti had always expressed an aversion to wind instruments, which he found perpetually out of tune. •

On the contrary, at a certain point this interest was transformed into a predilection: the guitar became one of the standardbearers of an entirely personal experimentation that Petrassi undertook beginning more or less in the years 1957–58. •

ALESSANDRO SCARLATTI Complete Works for Keyboard, Vol. 1 Francesco Tasini: harpsichord A. SCARLATTI: 16 Toccatas, Fugues & Arpeggios for harpsichord Recently, the importance of Alessandro Scarlatti has been revaluated particularly as the real founder of the important “Neapolitan keyboard music school.” • Scarlatti’s keyboard music, at one time considerably obscured by preference for his son’s corpus of sonatas, directly or indirectly influenced the keyboard works of his contemporaries Gaetano Greco (1657–1728) and Francesco Mancini (1672–1737). • Alessandro Scarlatti’s reputation at the beginning of the eighteenth century can be deduced from the enormous quantity of manuscript copies of his works conserved in libraries all over Europe. This is true, above all, of his keyboard compositions, which come from multiple scattered sources. •

Mercedes Gómez: harp Janet Paulus: harp LUNA: Carnaval, for two harps • Two Pieces, for two harps • Four Pieces in Ostinato, for two harps • Impromptus (3) for two harps • Sonata for two harps • Partita for two harps • Suite for two harps Armando Luna is an accomplished composer from Mexico City whose works are both challenging and exciting. Luna studied with Mario Lavista, a well-established Mexican composer who in turn studied with György Ligeti. • Luna’s style is not derived from Mexican folk or pop idioms, but is rooted in the contemporary classic composers. His works have been performed all over the world. • Some of the works for two harps on this CD were commissioned by Mercedes Gómez for her students at the National Conservatory in Mexico City. • The success of a student concert in 2000 led to a request for more such pieces from Luna, and so Gómez and her harp duo partner Janet Paulus made a commitment to make this CD and introduce the music to a wider public. • The performers and the composer revised much of the music together, and the new versions were premiered at the Conservatory in October, 2003. The recordings were made between then and 2005. •

At the same time, it represents the continuity of a compositional and performing oeuvre that started three decades ago. • Mexican composer and guitarist Guillermo Diego is recognized as one of the most prominent figures in the concert music of Mexico. For his work in developing the guitar repertoire, he is considered one of the principal renovators of instrumental music in his country. • For the better part of his thirty-year career, his works have been presented in the most important venues, such as the Palacio de Bellas Artes and International Cervantino Festival as well as in the US, France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Brazil, Canada, and Thailand. • On various occasions Diego has been the recipient of grants from the National Foundation for Arts and Letters (Mexico) as well as the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation in the US. • This release is another in the popular series of beautifully packaged Urtext recordings featuring music of Latin America! •

His successor continued Peter’s cultural policies and built the St. Petersburg court into a center of splendor in the Western tradition. • Under the regency of Peter’s niece Anna Ivanovna (1730–1740), who was also interested in promoting music, ballet, and theater, the first Italian opera was performed in Russia with great success. • Tsarina Catherine II “The Great” (1762–96) was a great patron of the arts; she inspired composers and even wrote opera libretti herself. Under Catherine, many Italian, French, and German artists—including those who composed the works on this CD—found their way to St. Petersburg; some of them stayed the rest of their lives. • Joseph Starzer (1726–1787) came from Vienna, Anton Ferdinand Titz (1742–1810) and Daniel Steibelt (1765–1823) from Germany, Pierre Baillot (1771–1842) from Paris, Luigi Madonis (1690–1770) from Venice, and Maxim Sozontovich Berezovsky (1745– 1777) from the Ukraine. • This cosmopolitan group of emigrés brought Baroque musical culture to a zenith in Russia, but their contributions have remained little-known abroad. •

Liszt) In Schubert’s time, the burgeoning middle class sought to create higher standards of culture in their homes, and one popular way was the pursuit of chamber music. • The piano was one of the most important instruments for music making in this new pursuit by the citizenry; it also played a central role in Schubert’s creativity, and the great number of works he wrote for piano four-hands is significant. • Schubert’s four-hand music was written for active music making in small circles, and can be regarded as musical entertainment in the highest sense of that concept. • This new release includes one of Franz Liszt’s later arrangements of Schubert’s four-hand piano marches from Op. 40 and Op. 121. • The Cologne Piano Duo has won numerous international competitions in the US, France, and Italy. They have given concerts in important centers of musical activity, including New York and Miami; have accepted invitations to well-known music festivals in the US, Australia, and Europe; and made appearances on radio and television both in Germany and internationally. • Their artistic specialization is in important but little known classic, romantic and contemporary music, as well as the standard works for two pianos and for one piano four-hands. •

Kyoto Symphony Orchestra Uwe Mund: conductor SMETANA: Má Vlast [My Fatherland] (Vyšehrad, Vltava [The Moldau], Šárka, From Bohemia’s Fields and Meadows, Tábor & Blanik) Bedˇrich Smetana (1824–1884) was the first composer to create a Czech form of classical music. His symphonic cycle Mà Vlast (My Fatherland) is considered a monument to the composer’s homeland unequalled in music history. • In the seclusion forced upon him by deafness and financial difficulties, Smetana created a splendid apotheosis of his native country. The six pieces are based on short programmatic descriptions of nature, folk art, history, and the myths of the Czech people. • The most famous is the second tone poem, Vltava, better known under its German title of Die Moldau. • Following his graduation from the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz in 1961, Uwe Mund was immediately engaged as conductor of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. Two years later, Herbert von Karajan chose him to be solo voice coach at the Vienna State Opera. • In 1998 he took over as chief conductor of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra in Japan. • The Kyoto Symphony Orchestra (KSO) was founded in 1956 as a municipal orchestra under the direct management of the Kyoto city government. It is the fourth oldest orchestra, and the only one managed by a public authority in Japan. Today, the KSO is one of the most admired orchestras in Japan. •

Chorus of the Musikhochschule, Mannheim Kurpfälzisches Chamber Orchestra Gerald Kegelmann: conductor Sabine Goetz: soprano Barbara R. Grabowski: alto Christoph Wittmann: tenor Rudolf Piernay: bass Abbé VOGLER: Requiem in E (arr. Dr. Joachim Veit) Abbé Georg Joseph Vogler (1749–1814) was a Catholic priest who also happened to be highly educated, and became one of the most noted music teachers of his era. Among his many successful students were Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer. • Abbé Vogler worked all over Europe—in Germany, France, Russia, England, and Portugal but longest in Sweden, where he was music director for King Gustavus III and music teacher to the crown prince. • The Requiem’s premiere took place after the composer’s death in 1814, when critics compared it favorably to Mozart’s great Requiem in D. • The Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester is the chamber orchestra of LudwigshafenMannheim. In 1777, at the height of musical life at the royal court in Mannheim, Abbé Vogler founded the Mannheimer Tonschule. The history of the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim is directly influenced by this great tradition, and it is a special duty for these musicians to follow this important heritage as they do on this recording. •

Adelina Scarabelli, William Matteuzzi, Enzo Dara, Maurizio Comencini, Bruno de Simone: vocal soloists Orchestra & Chorus of Teatro La Fenice, Venice Vittorio Parisi: conductor ROSSINI, MOZART, SALIERI, CIMAROSA & ZINGARELLI: L’ape musicale (complete opera) A rare complete recording of an opera, or more accurately azione teatrale (theater piece), put together in 1829—in America—from the music of various composers, including Mozart, by Mozart’s famous friend and librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte. • Da Ponte created three versions of this hodgepodge, creating the final version in 1829 in both Italian and English, with a first performance in New York City. • The music was “borrowed” from previous works by both Mozart and his famous rival, Salieri, as well as Domenico Cimarosa, Nicola Zingarelli, and finally, Rossini. • The play itself, L’ape musicale (“The Musical Bee”) is the only thing by Da Ponte. He is most famous for the three librettos he wrote for Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte, but he also worked with composers such as Martín y Soler and Salieri. • After getting in various scrapes and troubles from Venice to Vienna, Da Ponte finally came to the US, where he ran a grocery store in Philadelphia and later a bookstore in New York. • Making friends with Clement Clarke Moore, author of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, Da Ponte got an appointment at Columbia University as its first Professor of Italian Literature. He became a US citizen in 1828, at the age of seventy-nine. •

This CD is the first to present highlights from this exciting but long-forgotten opera. • Giacinto Calderara (1730–1803) was a highly talented composer who composed and conducted several hundred works of vocal and instrumental music over a career of fiftyfour years. • His greatest operatic triumph was Ricimero, first given in Turin in 1755. It is based on the true-life story of a king of the Goths during the late Roman Empire, and his conflict with an unlawful king of Norway. • Calderara is known to have studied music in Naples, and then served as music director for the cathedral at Asti, Italy for several years. He composed two opere serie in three acts. The first, Alessandro nell’Indie (“Alexander the Great in India”), with libretto by the famous Metastasio, was produced in 1752. • The other was Ricimero, first performed at the Teatro Regio, Turin, on December 26, 1755. The libretto of this work was by one Francesco Silvani. •

Alain Vanzo, Andrée Esposito, Iris Plaque, Ivan Saur: vocal soloists Opera of Nice Orchestra & Chorus Antonio de Almeida: conductor GOUNOD: Roméo et Juliette (complete opera) A large number of operas—at least eighty—have been adapted from the plays of Shakespeare, but few of them have survived. Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette has remained one of the handful of “Shakespeare operas” in the active repertoire, and it has had a very considerable success as Gounod’s second most popular, after Faust. • The opera had its premiere in Paris, at the Théâtre-Lyrique, on April 27, 1867. It was successful, and was given in both London and New York before the year was out. • This live performance, from the Nice Opera in 1976, was originally issued on LP but has long been unavailable, despite winning warm praise from critics around the world. • Conductor Antonio de Almeida (1928–1997) was one of the world’s authorities on French Romantic music. His efforts on behalf of French music won him the French Legion of Honor. Born in France, Almeida studied at Yale with Hindemith and made his conducting debut in Portugal. • He was invited by Sir Thomas Beecham to conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, after which he became a regular guest conductor with the Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony. •

Giangiacomo Guelfi, Amedeo Zambon, Anna Maria Rosati: vocal soloists RAI Orchestra & Chorus, Milan Nino Bonavolontà: conductor GIORDANO: La cena delle beffe (complete opera) The fortune of Umberto Giordano (1867–1948) was made by Andrea Chenier, whose opening night in 1896 was a triumph. It has remained his most popular work ever since, but he did write other fine operas that deserve revival. • One of these is his next-to-last opera, La cena delle beffe (“The Dinner of Mockers”), based on a play by Sem Benelli, a writer whose sensational themes titillated Italian audiences in the early twentieth century. The play and the opera are packed with lurid incidents, some of which still seem shocking today! • La cena delle beffe was first performed at La Scala on December 20, 1924. The conductor was Arturo Toscanini, and the cast included tenor Hipolito Lazaro and soprano Carmen Melis, major stars of their era. • The London Times reported that the opera was “crowned by an enormous success,” and it was given a season later at the Metropolitan Opera with stars such as Titta Ruffo, Beniamino Gigli, and Frances Alda, conducted by Tullio Serafin. The New York Times proclaimed it “a sweeping success.” Benelli’s play was already familiar to New Yorkers from a 1919 Broadway production starring John & Lionel Barrymore. • After twelve performances in two seasons, La cena delle beffe disappeared from the Met repertory, but by 1930, it had been produced in more than forty cities, from Buenos Aires and Barcelona to Prague, Chicago, and Warsaw. In the following six decades, however, it was staged only seven times until successful revivals at the 1987 Wexford Festival and Zurich in 1995. • This live performance comes from a RAI radio broadcast in 1972. •

“This Trovatore must go near the top of the list.” — Robert Levine, Classics Today Carlo Bergonzi, Gabriella Tucci, Piero Cappuccilli, Giulietta Simionato: vocal soloists Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, Milan Gianandrea Gavazzeni: conductor VERDI: Il trovatore (complete opera) This recording, which has been a best-seller in the standard Opera d’Oro budget catalogue, represents a live performance by the world-famous La Scala opera company of Milan when they were on tour in the Soviet Union in 1964, and determined to prove their mettle to the exacting Russian audience. • Soprano Gabriella Tucci was an outstanding Verdi soprano of her day, singing with purity of line, intelligence, and involvement. Tenor Carlo Bergonzi, famous for his exquisite sense of Italian style, was at his youthful peak when this recording was made. • Giulietta Simionato was another long-lived singer, here at the end of her public career, after being widely acknowledged as the world’s greatest operatic mezzo. •
Pierro Cappucilli, who would later become one of the most valued Italian baritones, is heard here at the very beginning of his illustrious career. • Conductor Gianandrea Gavazzeni was one of the most reliable Italian operatic conductors for many years, and here gives one of his most exciting readings, inspired by the enthusiasm of his Slavic audience. •

STRAUSS: Der Rosenkavalier (complete opera) Another entry in the immortal catalogue of conductor Carlos Kleiber (1930–2004), a colossus among 20th-century musicians. Although Kleiber had one of the most limited repertoires of any conductor, within his sphere he was often unapproachable. • His legendary recording of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony has been called the greatest of all the countless versions recorded over the past hundred years. Likewise his recording of Weber’s Der Freischütz, called by some critics “the greatest opera recording ever made.” • Any addition to the Kleiber discography is a major event, and this Rosenkavalier is no exception, especially when it is made available at budget price! • Born in Berlin to a father who was also a famous conductor—Erich Kleiber—Carlos was taken to Argentina as a small child when his family fled Nazi Germany. He worked his way up through the European opera houses, demanding exacting standards of his players, becoming reclusive, and never giving interviews. He never held a permanent position with any orchestra, preferring to remain a wandering “guest conductor.” • He was especially famous for his opera performances, and Der Rosenkavalier was among those in which he was considered peerless. • Live performance, Munich, July 13, 1973. •

Seven complete operas starring the brilliant Leyla Gencer—great live opera recordings at budget price in one space-saving set! • Exciting live recordings taped 1958–1970! • In a world dominated by singers from the countries with the most deep-rooted operatic cultures, Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer (b. 1928) seemed an exotic quantity to many Western audiences. Her career remained somewhat at the fringes, but a cadre of fans has always rooted for her devotedly, and their numbers have only grown as more people are exposed to her passionate artistry through recordings. • Her voice was not large, nor her production absolutely even, but she compensated for these liabilities with many other talents: her voice was flexible in coloratura, she was able to float exquisitely soft high notes, she adhered closely to the score, she could vary her vocal color, her phrasing was minutely nuanced, and above all she was an intelligent and passionate interpreter of superior dramatic insights. •

“Pato Banton had been kicking around the UK scene for years before he finally recorded this, his debut album, and one wonders why it took so long. Like the best toasters, the DJ has a quick wit, and is an entertaining mimic—his imitations of his mother are worthy of a standup comic … Banton established his reputation with this record, and many of these songs remain live favorites to this day. TRICKS OF PETER THE CHEATER Tricks of Peter the Cheater is an adaptation of Paaji Peter, written by legendary Bengali children’s literature author Shri. Sukumar Roy.
