Although greatly outnumbered by the combined power of the Royal Navy, the German battleships vastly outgunned most of the ships in the British Fleet and were a particular threat to merchant ships and their destroyer escorts. In this program, follow the Royal Navy’s campaign to sink the largest German battleships—the Tirpitz, the Bismarck, and pocket battleship the Graf Spee. The war in the Pacific was primarily a naval war. It was marked by a series of amphibious operations that gradually rolled back Japanese forces in the Southern and Central Pacific until Allied forces were on the threshold of the Japanese home islands.
