Overview
Stockholm’s Moneybrother is the solo project from Anders Wendin (originally of Monster fame), a soul-oriented blend of reggae, punk, pub rock, and even disco. Named after the two words his baby brother could pronounce in English, Moneybrother walked straight into listener’s hearts with his Swedish Grammy-winning 2003 debut Blood Panic. Since then, Wendin has continued to reach new heights throughout Europe with three more releases, not to mention a tomato soup brand that bears the Moneybrother name. Now, the artist has set his sights stateside with his first US full-length, Real Control.

“Imagine a Swedish Joe Strummer covering showier Bruce Springsteen songs and you’re about there.” — AllMusic’s 25 Crushworthy Bands
STREET DATE APRIL 13, 2010
It didn’t take long for touring American bands to take notice of Moneybrother’s distinct sound. Against Me!’s Tom Gabel often talks about Moneybrother when asked about his favorite bands, Sabot Productions released a US sampler of b-sides and tracks off Moneybrother’s debut and sophomore releases, and Franz Nicolay (The Hold Steady, World/Inferno Friendship Society) invited the artist to open for a recent US tour. With Real Control, Moneybrother continues to utilize elements of ’60s and ’70s soul like call-and-response vocals, sweeping string arrangements, and dramatic lyrics. From the Bjorn Yttling-produced opener to the epic closer, Moneybrother paints with the same pallet as Stiff Records-era pub rock bands, Dexys Midnight Runners, Thin Lizzy, The Clash, Springsteen, and, of course, the northern soul greats that so deeply inspired him.

The Cumbia revolution marches on! Los Angeles’ seminal Cumbia group is anything but a world music band. On their new album, the material is mostly their own, and their attitude owes more to punk than anything else. This is probably the first time the group was able to capture, in the studio, the manic energy that made them hits at Grand Performance in LA, Summerstage in NY, Japan’s Fuji Rock, and the UK’s Glastonbury festivals. Escape Room features trance-like, hypnotic Cumbias with a frantic edge.

For over 13 years, In Strict Confidence has been creating a unique blend of electronic industrial music. For 2010, the band is set to release La Parade Monstrueuse. Once again, Dennis Osterman’s trademark vocals flow flawlessly with the music, while both are accentuated by female vocals on several tracks. La Parade Monstrueuse is crafted with a more polished feel than its predecessors and only one thing in mind: ISC’s fans.

WUMPSCUT IS BACK!!! Nearly a year to date from his last outing, Rudy Ratzinger has returned with Siamese. His darkest album in over half a decade, Siamese revisits the elements that made Embryodead such a cult classic. Brooding vocals, destructive percussion, ominous synths, and captivating sequences draw listeners in, enthralling with each track. “Falling From Lucifer’s Grace” opens the album with an eerie air and quickly bombards you with its hard drums and corrosive riffs. “Siamese” and “Auf Wiedersehn Im Massengrab” slow things down a bit, while the acidic beats and sticky melodies of “Boneshaker Baybee” and “Loyal To My Hate” make them destined to be club favorites. Definitely not one to be missed in 2010, Siamese is exactly what Wumpscut fans have been waiting for.

X Marks The Pedwalk burst onto electro-industrial scene in the beginning of the 1990s. Their debut full-length, 1991’s Freaks, immediately established the act as a major force in the newly emerging industrial dance genre, and over the next few releases their sound evolved. Slowly the harshness faded away and the act experimented with blending in more mainstream techno elements, culminating in 1996’s Meshwork, which was met with cries of approval throughout the hard electro scene. The release of the album Drawback saw a triumphant blend of influences and musical growth, with styling ranging from mainstream electro to moody synthetic soundscapes. Then, at the peak of the acts creative output, X Marks The Pedwalk went dormant. Now, a decade later, the legend returns!

The project C-Drone-Defect, more than 10 years old, has become the insiders’ tip of the German electro scene. Both of their previous CDs, Neural Dysorder Syndrome (SPV) and Nemesis (NoiTekk), were very successful—but compared to the new album Dystopia they appear to be more like rough diamonds! Dystopia manages to raise the bar so high in terms of songwriting and composing that hardly any other project can compare. Driving rhythms, catchy keyboard soundscapes, and a perfect voice mix with great new ideas and creativity to create one of the most incredible electro albums of 2010. Threatening, dark, gloomy, and epic!

1.6 Band came up in the early ’90s NYC hardcore scene, formed by Kevin Egan in the wake of the collapse of Beyond (whose other members included Tom Capone and Alan Cage of Quicksand, and Vic DiCara of 108, Burn, and Inside Out). 1.6 Band is one of those bands that makes your jaw drop when you see them live. Their musicianship, precise stop/start timing, and stage presence make you want to scream. Take the songwriting of Dag Nasty and the time changes of No Means No or Victims Family, throw in an angry screamer, and you have 1.6 Band.

Throat is a suite in seven sections fully designed to be taken in as a whole; it is their full-length debut following their 2008 EP, Teeth, on the Sockets/ Gilgongo labels. Simplistic by design, yet horrifically complex by execution, Little Women’s combination of free jazz with the Brooklyn-inspired speed of Mick Barr and the brutal intensity of Coughs puts more feeling and saturation into every track than most bands’ entire discography. From his high concept records to busking in front of the New York Stock Exchange, Nick Jaina loves to experiment. Jaina made this album in the in-between moments, when the studio was otherwise empty, or late at night when his friend & studio engineer Lee Howard wanted to try out a new amp or microphone. It was a gradual process, allowing Jaina the time to deconstruct the songs and put them back together again. The result is an intimate album that is positive and upbeat, but also rich and dark. It adventures, endeavors, reflects, and drifts just like any great story.

Overview
Sasquatch has returned to wreak havoc with their explosive brand of rock and roll! The new album marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band: while this record continues to showcase their signature sound and technique, the production is bigger and the songwriting is more refined. Drawing on influences from ’70s metal, rock, and psychedelia, the band falls somewhere between an amalgamation of Black Sabbath, old Soundgarden, and a bastardized version of Grand Funk Railroad.

“Thundering out of the basements of Minneapolis, Gay Beast’s latest record, Second Wave, is full of erratic shifts in time signature, pleading yelps over razor-sharp eightbit keyboards, and pounding tribal percussion. Although not for the faint of heart, this frenetic trio’s music is miraculously danceable—the perfect soundtrack for a post-apocalyptic discotheque.” — The New Yorker

Crafting both pop singles and long-form dance tracks, Boston’s Mystery Roar produces recordings that are melodic, danceable, and contemporary. Their references are familiar; not forced: disco, blue-eyed soul, new wave, soft rock, and synth pop. The sextet’s live set is sweaty and passionate: signature three-part vocal harmonies are supplemented by vocoders, rhythmic guitars, acoustic and electronic percussion, and swirls of synthesized glitter.

Overview
2009 represented a year of woodshedding and high profile touring for Sugar & Gold. Following a series of SXSW appearances to sold-out rooms, the band embarked on a string of dates through the Northeast and Midwest opening for like-minded compatriots Of Montreal. Re-energized, the band returned to the studio and produced the critically lauded AYA Remix EP, released in October 2009 just in time for a six-week US tour. After appearances at the Monolith Festival, CMJ, and Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest, Sugar & Gold returned to SF to put the finishing touches on their upcoming LP. With an expanded palette that includes elements of electro, ’80s R&B, new wave psychedelia, and German minimalism—all woven together in a framework of transcendent modern pop—Get Wet! is a transcendent pop album that is as emotionally broad as it is stylistically eclectic.

System Syn has spent the past several years bubbling just under the radar in the electronic music scene. Postscript, The Mourning Ritual, and End were phenomenal releases, and were adored by fans around the world. However, their efforts were overshadowed by bigger names in the genre. Now all of that is about to change with their newest album for 2010—Strangers is System Syn’s crowning achievement, and will not be ignored! Musically, the song structures are impeccable. Sad, slow and mid-tempo tracks give way to angry, harder dance floor crashers—and as if the electronic sequences weren’t enough, live guitars and acoustic drums are sprinkled throughout the album. Much of Strangers revolves around relationships, and for each listener the songs will hold an entirely different meaning. Words cannot begin to describe Strangers. It is an album that needs to be experienced firsthand.

Overview
Following 2008’s devastating one-two punch (January’s Tintype & August’s Funeral Mixtape), The Pack a.d.’s third album marks a bold departure away from the blues and headfirst into straight-up garage rock/pop/punk. Recorded live off the floor to analog tape at Hive Studios in Vancouver by Jesse Gander (Japandroids, Bison b.c.) and mastered at GhettoRecorders in Detroit by Jim Diamond (Dirtbombs, Detroit Cobras), we kill computers is a rapid-fire assault of 13 heavy, heavy songs. The new record, a full year in the making, captures the ferocious energy of the band’s live show, unapologetic and loud as hell. Sonically charged and relentless, The Pack a.d. don’t play a song so much as attack it, and we kill computers is them coming at you at a run.

“I want to make white man spirituals. I want to give names to the ghosts, as a way of saying ‘we know who you are.’ I want to explore facets of our lives that are bestial, as well as ones that are angelic. I want to make guesses about who you are. I want to arrive slowly, and leave swiftly. I want to peer through the largest telescope, squint through the most powerful microscope, and see infinity stretch in both directions. I want to somehow recognize our significance in spite of this. I want to stop obsessively searching for truth, and appreciate the ambiguity of living a human life.” — Chris Staples

APRIL 27, 2010
Beginning with their cover of Terry Riley’s “In C,” AMT went on to create “In E” and “In D” as well as their collaboration with Ultrasound on “In G.” Now they return to the concept, with four new tracks—”In A,” “In Z,” “In 0,” and “In Infinity.” As far as music is concerned, a scale could be anything. The names of the scales from A to G are no more than conventions, decided through human logic. However, beginnings and endings, nothingness and the infinite, are not conventions or human creations. Rather, they are part of the cosmos and can be applied to all things that exist. On these pieces AMT follows their belief in this truth, journeying from beginning to end, from end to beginning, from nothingness to the infinite, and from the infinite to nothingness...

When Important originally released this set, it was met with instant acclaim and a lengthy, nationally broadcast feature on NPR. Restored, sequenced, and mastered by producer Jack Dangers, Wide Weird World is a tribute that seamlessly blends Jacobs’ early loop experiments, goof interviews, rare 45s from his MEA imprint, sound effects, and much more. The companion DVD, The Fine Art of Goofing Off, contains three half-hour programs that artist Bob McClay and Henry Jacobs collaborated on in the early 1970s. Contributors include artist Victor Moscoso, filmmaker Jordan Belson, theologian Alan Watts, and writer George Leonard. Bob McClay saved these films from the dustbin, and the world is richer for it.

Absurd folklorist Henry Jacobs returns with a selection of rare interviews, odd loops, sales pitches, early synthesizer demos, an ether-infused evening, and more! Produced in San Francisco and New York, Around The World With Henry Jacobs is a travelogue that continues the story begun with The Wide Weird World of Henry Jacobs, mixing archival material from the 1950s with recent improvisations by Jacobs. Guests include Stan Freberg and Dr. Irwin Corey, with Alan Watts returning for a visit, too. Also included is a special bonus disc: First Night, one of the true gems from the collection. Best known for his collaborations with Paul Flaherty, Michael Flower, and Thurston Moore—as well as a stint as the drummer for Björk’s Volta tour—Chris Corsano is widely considered to be one of the best drummers of his generation. Equally adaptive is UK saxophone giant Paul Dunmall, who has worked with jazz greats like Alice Coltrane and Evan Parker as well as funk and folk acts like Johnny Guitar Watson and Dando Shaft. After a chance meeting at the Lisbon Airport, Corsano left the Björk mega-tour to get down to business alongside the prolific Dunmall for some vital improvisation in England. This wonderfully recorded live set begins with Dunmall swirling away on the border pipes, and what follows is an impulsive and lyrical improvisation, alternating between sparse and impossibly textured. The melodies are expertly uncoiled so that they remain charged whether the tempo is at full speed or crawling, and the whole set gives the impression that this duo was fated to work together.
