ALLEGRO CLASSICAL WELCOMES

Transart

p. 4–5

Hervé Corre de Valmalète, head of the TRANSART label, has always believed there was a place in the world for an authentic label combining the best recording techniques with intensity, risk, and pure communication with its audience. An audacious project with pianist Georges Pludermacher was the trigger. After offering majors to record Beethoven’s complete sonatas live—and in the absence of answers—Hervé Corre decided to carry through the 10-CD box on his own, and to create the TRANSART label. The audacity of such an initiative, combined with the quality of the musicians, inspires the label’s artistic choices. The selected repertoire is entirely harmonious with each artist’s talent, and each recording is thought of in a unique, artisanal way. TRANSART recordings are testimonies of rare and precious moments.

SAYDISC

p. 20–21

The famous Saydisc catalog is now available again! Featuring traditional music, music boxes, nostalgia, and highly unusual recordings, Saydisc started its unique musical journey in 1965 and became renowned worldwide for an innovative, unusual approach to record publishing. Saydisc albums have become collector’s items since the retirement of owners Gef & Genny Lucena in 2000, but popular demand has inspired them to reintroduce the catalog to the marketplace. Saydisc comes to Allegro Classical via Nimbus/Wyastone.

Release Date: April 12, 2011 Dickie Landry: saxophone Kurt Munkacsi: tape recording LANDRY: Fifteen Saxophones • Alto Flute Quad Delay • Kitchen Solos Cover Sticker: First-ever reissue from founding Philip Glass Ensemble member Dickie Landry. Limited Edition of 500. LP Includes Download Code. Following two jazz LPs issued on the legendary Chatham Square label (which he co-ran with Philip Glass and engineer Kurt Munkacsi), Dickie Landry released Fifteen Saxophones on the Northern Lights & Wergo labels in 1978. The recording simultaneously exhibits Landry’s boundary-pushing saxophone playing and his understanding of the minimalists’ emphasis on long-form treatises on sound itself. Using intricate Revox tape delays on “Fifteen Saxophones,” “Alto Flute Quad Delay,” and the side-long live document “Kitchen Solos,” Landry’s strong personality as a player shines through the walls of sound he has created. Limited vinyl version packaged in a high-quality, heavyweight, tip-on jacket with download code.

Following a survey of the complete works for solo piano, and last year’s acclaimed releases of chamber works for violin and piano, Avie continues exploring the composer’s oeuvre with the world-premiere recording of his Symphony No. 1, with Gramophone Award winner Thomas Zehetmair conducting Northern Sinfonia. This is paired with Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 6, as Gál was an acknowledged scholar of his 19th century forbearer who penned the book Franz Schubert and the Essence of Melody, leading some to consider the composers “kindred spirits.”

Cat # DPH 34082 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case; Box Lot 25

Mátyás Seiber’s three string quartets span his career—from the astonishingly assured student essay of the first quartet, composed at age eighteen, to the mature synthesis of his third and final Quartetto Lirico. Seiber’s work was nourished by several of the 20th century’s most significant stylistic trends, from jazz and serialism to the folk music of his native Hungary. He was also, like many of the mid-century’s most important artists, an émigré and an influential teacher; Hugh Wood’s booklet essay pays tribute to his lasting influence on a generation of British composers.

Oxana Shevchenko revealed an extraordinary command of structure, rhythmic dynamism, and sheer pianistic exuberance in her performance. She seized the moment with unbridled musical commitment and drive, and carried away the first prize with unanimous approval from the distinguished international jury. Just three days after her triumph in the concerto final, Shevchenko returned to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the setting of the first two rounds of the competition, to record a varied recital program for Delphian as part of her first prize. Dorothy Lewis-Griffith: piano GERSHWIN: An American in Paris • Novelette in Fourths • Porgy and Bess (exc.) • Second Rhapsody Dorothy Lewis-Griffith was introduced to Gershwin’s music at age 12, through a priceless gift. A gentleman in her hometown, planning a move to New York City, did not wish to be encumbered by his huge collection of 78 RPM records. Acquainted with the child’s musical ability, he offered them to her through her father. The manuscript to Novelette in Fourths was incomplete; however, Gershwin extended the piece in one of his piano rolls recordings. In 1994, Lewis-Griffith extracted the sixteen-measure extension aurally from that recording, and she has included it in her rendition on this CD. (Since 1994, the piece has been published in its complete form.) She performs Melody No. 17 and Sleepless Night exactly as they were written in those manuscripts, without a break as one work.

Mélanie Bonis, born into a modest Parisian family, was in no way prepared for a career in music. Her family was opposed to her taking piano lessons, so she taught herself how to play the instrument until the age of 12, when a close friend of the family finally convinced her parents to send her to music school. An exceptionally gifted student, she was soon introduced to Cesar Franck, who opened the doors of the Conservatoire to her in 1876.

Ralph van Raat: piano Radio Chamber Philharmonic Otto Tausk, Pascal Rophe: conductors VLEGGAAR: Piano Concerto • Ayre of solace • Dead as Disco In an interview with composer Giel Vleggaar (1974), he mentioned Prince, the pop legend who achieved worldwide fame with music in which straightforwardness and danceability go hand in hand with deliberate structures. This principle also forms the basis of Vleggaar’s music. He, however, uses different means: not a rock group, but ensembles of principally acoustic instruments, played by professional musicians. His Piano Concerto, premiered in the ZaterdagMatinee at the end of January and featured on this disc, stands by these principles.

On one hand, Beethoven stands for the free and uncompromising artist who vouches for human ideals. On the other, he grasped music itself, linking themes and motifs with unprecedented power. In this respect, Nietzsche’s witticism that Beethoven wrote “music about music” can be understood as appropriate praise.

While the first disc took us on a musical journey around the world, Romanian Rhapsody takes us to the pianist’s home(s): the title piece by George Enescu is a veritable hymn to Romania, where she began her career. Among others, he was a disciple of his father and Pau Casals, who transmitted all the geniality of his cello. Fuga Libera

J.S. BACH

Orchestral Suites Il Fondamento/Paul Dombrecht: conductor J.S. BACH: Orchestral Suites Nos. 1–4, BWV 1066–1069 Bach’s Suites have been the subject of a lot of recent research, and the work of the famous American musicologist Joshua Rifkin didn’t escape Paul Dombrecht, the heart and soul of Il Fondamento. After Fasch, Telemann, Arriaga, and Albinoni, the magnificent Flemish ensemble returns with the complete orchestral suites in which the smoothness, technique, and taste of its musicians serve a crystalline transparency. J.S. BACH

Notenbüchlein (The Little Notebook) Koen Plaetinck: marimba J.S. BACH: Sonata No. 1, BWV 1001 • Minuets, BWV Anh. 114–116 • Polonaise, BWV Anh. 119 • March, BWV Anh. 124 • Musette, BWV Anh. 126 • Suite No. 1: Prelude & Fugue, BWV 866 In its explorations of “Bach in all its forms,” Fuga Libera was waiting for the rare bird capable of provoking reflection on the genius of the Cantor on the basis of the marimba, which would no doubt have fascinated him. Showing the same ease with 18th century timpani as in his position as percussionist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Koen Plaetinck has seduced numerous specialists of ancient music, among them Sigiswald Kuijken and Philippe Herreweghe. Here is the marimba at its highest level, at the service of Bach, in a series of unusual and utterly convincing transcriptions.

Béla BARTÓK & J.S. BACH Sonatas for Solo Violin Tedi Papavrami: violin BARTÓK: Sonata for Solo Violin • J.S. BACH (tr. Papavrami): Fantaisie & Fugue, BWV 542 • Suite, BWV 822 When Tedi Papavrami began planning a CD program Bartók’s Sonata, he soon ran up against the difficulty of choosing the other works that would echo the piece. Bach’s Fantaisie & Fugue BWV 542 had fascinated him from the first time he heard it, and his choice for the second transcription readily went to a work of a thoroughly different nature. The Suite, BWV 822 for harpsichord charmed him straightaway with its orchestral overture à la française and Italian influences.
