NAIL WELCOMES FiXT

pg 3

FiXT is a forward-thinking independent music & media company founded and owned by flagship artist Celldweller. The FiXT label is focused on building the careers of dedicated artists who blaze new trails that transcend genres and entrance listeners. From the big screen to the club floor, FiXT sets the soundscape for a new frontier.

NAIL WELCOMES RIPPLE MUSIC

pg 5–7

Hard-driving, guitar-mad, heavy rock ‘n’ roll! Ripple Music is the record label by music fans for music fans. Or as Captain Beyond Zen Webzine says, “The best record label in the world for ’70s hard rock and classic rock.” Ripple Music exploded onto the music scene in 2010 with 10 releases, and proceeded to spend the next 12 months building a roster of established veterans and youthfully exuberant authentic rock acts. As of early 2012, Ripple has 11 artists that call the label home, with more on the way. Originally started as a music review blog under the name The Ripple Effect, proprietors Todd Severin and John Rancik set out to create an artist-friendly home for the music that has always meant so much to them—authentic rock ‘n’ roll. In part to preserve the music, in another part to advance it, the members of Ripple Music spend day after day passionately working the music for a new generation of hard rock fans.

NAIL WELCOMES LENTONIA records

pg 14

Inspired by France’s innovative traditions of pop and electronica, the founders of Lentonia Records release emerging artists in vinyl, CD, and digital formats. The independent label works first and foremost with female musicians, in genres ranging from electro-pop and dark wave to electro-rock and “hip-pop.”

Blue Stahli arrives at your party in suave style, with a bombshell on each arm and martini in hand—but by night’s end he will be throwing burning couches into your pool. Such is the one-two punch of the debut self-titled album, 10 tracks of cathartically vengeful alternative rock with a streak of Ray-Bansporting electro-funk that gives it a sexiness punk never had. Stahli doesn’t shy away from playing with the reigning dance styles of our day, but each track retains the distinct flavor that wrenches your head open, climbs in, and uses your brainy bits to pantomime Pete Townsend’s entire history of guitar-smashing. With powerful vocal hooks and a knack for hybridizing genres—such as album closer “Give Me Everything You’ve Got’s” epic flash-bang of frenetic punk riffage and dubstep bass warble—Blue Stahli is an album aimed squarely at the front lines of alternative music.

The folks at the 2011 Download Festival felt it. Fans who saw them opening for Black Stone Cherry felt it. The lucky masses who will be at Hammerfest 2012 are about to feel it. Soon, everyone will know the band that Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot has called “absolutely awesome stuff!” Trucker Diablo’s The Devil Rhythm is a 40+ minute, high-octane thrill ride down the rock ‘n’ roll highways! Mixing bits of southern rock with classic rock ‘n’ roll and injecting modern-day melodic sensibilities, The Devil Rhythm embraces a rebellious rock attitude that is capturing the imagination of a new generation of rock fans. “Easily one of the best ass-kickin’ rock bands to come out of Ireland in at least a decade.” — My Global Mind “WOW. This hard rocking outfit from Northern Ireland’s release of The Devil Rhythm (on Ripple Music) is destined to set fire to the stale offerings on the current platter of modern hard rock. Most bands simply don’t have the skill—or smarts—to mesh the old and new school rock, but Trucker Diablo gets the job done and then some.” — Now This ROCKS!

The Moog combine the sexiness of dirty garage rock with warm synth fuzz and massive pop hooks to bypass the dark matter of familiarity in their genre. The boys are no strangers to working with the biggest names in the industry; their last two albums include collaborations with Jack Endino (renowned for his work on Nirvana’s Bleach) and Geoff Ott (Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan). This time around, The Moog went after the man that inspired them, Ken Scott, who has engineered albums by The Beatles, Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, and more. The Moog encapsulated Scott’s unique vision and created their own version of rock ‘n’ roll essence, and Seasons in the Underground is the sound of a band leaving behind comparisons to incite their own sonic revolution. “Rough-around-the-edges garage pop tunes.” — SPIN “With Buzzcocks-sounding intros and fuzzy pop bodies … they have a fucking star with a capital F in lead singer Tonyo, who struts, preens, and confronts with the best of them.” — Tiny Mix Tapes

Cross Coltrane with The Clash and it would resemble the sound of this record. Instead of a vocalist, saxophone-legend-to-be Kamasi Washington takes the lead and raises the bar for instrumental intensity. The compositions range from short, punk-minded flurries to thematic uptempo romps, rounded out with a few expansive journeys. Kamasi’s tonality is comparable to that of a young Pharoah Sanders and bonds well with the electric undercurrent laid down by punk drummer/guitarist Lumpy and bassist/ keyboardist Matt Mongomery. “A collective of talented in-house players from San Francisco-based label Wide Hive. Producer and label owner Gregory Howe, who clearly has a great ear, has penned a striking selection of soul-fused jazz tracks for his house band.” — BBC Music magazine

It has been two years since Eri Yamamoto’s last album of wonderfully melodious songs. Folks around the world get effusive when they hear her music, and that is an organically beautiful reality. Yamamoto has also been busy writing, and The Next Page presents a treasure trove of all-new compositions. Swinging eloquence, luminous lyricism, a deep rapport with her long-standing trio, and refreshingly original material are the key factors to this music. She breathes new life into the jazz piano trio format every time she plays. Because there was so much new material when it came time to record, it was decided to format this album as two distinct sets, akin to hearing her live in a jazz club, with a short break in between. While it was recorded in highest fidelity sound at Systems Two Studio in Brooklyn, the presentation is based on her regular engagement at Arthur’s Tavern, NYC as well as her popular appearances at Cornelia Street Café, NYC. The trio has been working together for 16 years, and this seventh album moves their music forward onto The Next Page. Joy remains their aim! “Yamamoto’s playing, unhurried and unforced, demonstrates an active imagination and gift for melody; her improvisations favor focused introspection, in the spirit of someone who stops along the way to pore over the small details of everyday life that often elude those who hurry on.” — All About Jazz “A lovely touch and an active musical imagination … each piece shines with its own interior light.” — BBC “One would think that the piano trio format would have played out its creative potential long ago, but there’s not a cliché to be found within a hundred miles of this lovely recording. Highly recommended.” — Other Music

Darius Jones Quartet

Book of Mæ’bul (Another Kind of Sunrise) Selling points

• Third part of Jones’ highly acclaimed first trilogy! • Conclusion of the first chapter in the Man’ish Boy epic, which will encompass nine volumes. • Features highly talented generational peers Matt Mitchell, Trevor Dunn, and Ches Smith. • This is avant-garde jazz music that has been purposefully designed to embrace the listener. It might just be one of the finest jazz (or otherwise) record albums to be released in 2012! • RIYL: Miles Davis Quintet, Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet, Jason Moran, Charles Lloyd.

2011 was a banner year for alto saxophonist/ composer Darius Jones. The promise of his acclaimed 2009 debut was met and further illuminated by a pair of utterly distinct albums, each of which gave and received a great measure of love: Cosmic Lieder introduced a standing duet project with established jazz master Matthew Shipp (who celebrated his 50th birthday last year, and released the crowning Art of the Improviser), and Big Gurl (Smell My Dream) animated the bodacious titular character via Jones’ bad-ass trio with Adam Lane and Jason Nazary. Now, 2012 reveals the magical third character in the Man’ish Boy epic, and if God is paying attention, shall see the appreciation of Darius Jones swell to a level concordant with his voluminous musical gifts.

“Equally earthy and avant-garde … intellectually stimulating though anything but academic … the appealing unruliness to his music coexists with authority.” — JazzTimes

Book of Mæ’bul (Another Kind of Sunrise) elevates Darius’ estimable work as composer and bandleader to a new level of creative magnitude. It is his first Quartet release, and once again features a stunning new book of compositions written specifically for the project. Sublime melodies, purposefully juxtaposed meters, love, and beauty map the exquisitely detailed yet fluid movement of the music. Book of Mæ’bul, inspired by Jones’ lifetime just before and right after his 2005 arrival in NYC, is the third part of the first chapter in the Man’ish Boy epic. From this point forward, the inspiration behind/revelation of each new volume and character will be in real time.

Lords of Acid, the Belgian electro-industrial-techno outfit fronted by the legendary Praga Khan, has returned with Deep Chills, the outfit’s first new album in 12 years. Khan & longtime collaborator Erhan Kurkun (music and arrangements) follow up the smash success of the comeback single Little Mighty Rabbit with an all-new sonic orgy. From the Our Little Secret-era bounce of “Pop That Tooshie” to the driven, acid-house-flavored, anthemic beats of “Children of Acid” and the elecro-rock vibe of “Love Bus,” Deep Chills offers an innovative, updated take on the deviant sounds that make Lords of Acid so loved.

The surf rock and punk flavored “Surfin’ Hedgehog” will have you singing along instantly. The alt-country tinged “Slip N Slide” answers the question “What if Cowboy Junkies wrote really, really dirty songs?” The track “Paranormal Activity” features guest vocals by Zak Bagans (TV Host/Producer for Ghost Adventures and Paranormal Challenge, NY Times best-selling author of Dark World) and blends dark, menacing, stabbing trip-hop, haunting synths, and classic Lords of Acid grooves. Now, despite numerous lineup changes, world tours, over 2.5 million album sales, and every possible point of crisis and conflict a band can face, Lords of Acid returns with a new crew of deviants, dilettantes, and sonically transmitted diseases.

The early ’90s were a prosperous time for the industrial music underground, marking the transition toward a more caustic and aggressive sound. At the forefront of this new machine rock movement was 16volt, whose 1993 debut album Wisdom helped usher in what would come to be referred to as “coldwave.” Sadly, the original album has been long out-of-print, available via 16volt’s website as a digital album only … until now! In 2012, Metropolis Records releases Wisdom to the masses, remastered and featuring several never-before-heard remixes and bonus tracks. Featuring production from renowned figures like Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy) and Keith “Fluffy” Auerbach (Ministry), this re-release is a momentous occasion for fans of 16volt and industrial rock alike; a piece of underground music history that shows no signs of aging after almost two decades.

Joan of Arc has always been an unpredictable band. In their 17-year history they have consistently sidestepped convention and expectation, often leaving less-adventurous listeners scratching their heads in the wake of their insane (and perhaps brilliant) endeavors. In 2011 Joan of Arc released their most conventionally “rocking” album in years, the Albini-engineered Life Like. Now, the band explores the other extreme: an epic instrumental soundtrack to the 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc. Recorded live on opening night of the 2011 Chicago International Movies & Music Festival, the new album is the latest unexpected turn for the band. Joan of Arc have composed a dark, flowering sonic counterpart to the film’s grim subject matter (a rather haunting depiction of savage religious persecution). Released in vinyl and digital formats only, Joan of Arc Presents: Joan of Arc is intended to be synced manually to the film, all Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz style. If you were to find yourself stranded in such a place with nothing but a radio receiver, Gustaf Hildebrand imagines that this is what you would hear; low rumbling soundscapes interspersed with bursts of static, com-chatter, and signal interceptions from a distant world. This split vinyl record is being released as a companion piece to two new releases by Duane Pitre and Eleh. “Feel Free” is a new composition by Duane Pitre that has three possible manifestations: solo performance, group performance, and sound installation. At the core of all of them is the pillar of the work, an open yet orderly system whose intention is to produce potentially infinite variations of selfgenerating rhythm and melody. The installation version is void of any performers, and is meant to embody a certain stillness. And while the listener may become familiar with what seem to be recurring patterns, no sounds are ever looped, but are rather continually moving forward, yet still remain suspended.

A major new composition written by Duane Pitre. Installation version released simultaneously on split vinyl with Eleh. Full promo mailing via Important Records. Ads booked with The Wire. RIYL: Pauline Oliveros, Ellen Fullman, Eliane Radigue, Barn Owl.

The two major focal points in the creation of composer Duane Pitre’s “Feel Free,” his new work for a unique sextet combination, were rhythm and melody. An open yet orderly system intended to produce potentially infinite variations of self-generating rhythm and melody was carefully created for this piece, allowing the sextet musicians to approach these factors in a freer manner. This musical system, combined with the fixed elements of the composition, spawned a rich foundation of harmony & rhythm that sounds and feels exotic and new. The title, “Feel Free,” derives in part from one of the composition’s instructions to its performers. It suggests that they should feel free to interact with (or ignore) one another, as well as with the random, real-time, computer generated patterns of guitar harmonics (the pillar of the work). This approach creates a performance that is unique upon each occasion that it is performed; it is free from its own restraints. “Strings cascading over one another like warm honey … immense waves of warm, majestic harmonics completely engulf you.” — Cyclic Defrost Track Listing: Feel Free: Section I, Section II, Section III, Section IV, Section V

After tackling American maverick composer Charles Ives—and being rewarded with a Grammy nomination—vocalist Theo Bleckmann takes on the songbook of British pop recluse Kate Bush. A jazz singer and new music composer of eclectic tastes and prodigious gifts, Bleckmann makes music that is accessibly sophisticated, unsentimentally emotional, and seriously playful. This project goes beyond merely recreating Kate’s Bush music, taking it to further realms of sound and interpretation. Joining Theo in this venture are longtime collaborator percussionist John Hollenbeck, bassist Skúli Sverrisson, and keyboardist Henry Hey. “From start to finish, Bleckmann’s explorations of his cult hero in the pop world provide the ideal vehicle for him to rise above his own cult status in modern jazz.” — DownBeat “Kate Bush is a special fit for him. The arc of her career, uneasily abutting art-rock and alternative music, jibes with his own off-kilter profile.” — Nate Chinen, New York Times “One of the most flexible and uncategorizable figures on the New York scene—since the mid-’90s he’s been doing his thing in a niche of his own invention, somewhere between jazz, cabaret, classical, experimental, and improvised music.” — Chicago Reader

Those who are lucky enough to cross paths with his music should consider themselves fortunate.” — SeattleShowGal.com “Bertram has his own clean & cutting tenor and his songs combine the rustic vibe of the Northwest with the Southern twang of the Mississippi capitol named for the 7th President of the United States. Bertram fits into the continuum of new singer-songwriters like M. Ward, Jim James, Ray Lamontagne, and Josh Ritter, yet brings his own unique sense of storytelling to the proceedings.” — WXPN.org

After getting its start under a different name in 1997, Grendel (named after a character in Beowulf) has developed a massive following in the electro-industrial scene. Renowned for unorthodox and original use of orchestration, and obscure samples incorporated with harsh and pounding EBM structures, Grendel has perfected a unique spin on aggrotech. Previous releases such as End of Ages, Prescription Medicide, Soilbleed, and Harsh Generation all stand as scene favorites and still dominate dance floors worldwide. Now, after three long years of silence, Grendel emerges from the studio with the all-new Timewave:Zero. With this new release, Grendel returns to its signature sound and pushes aggrotech further into new territories, continuing the band’s tradition of delivering cutting-edge harsh EBM. Be a part of the harsh generation and live by the bassline! Combining harsh beats with deep, mostly German lyrics to create unabashedly old school rhythms modernized for today’s dance floors, Skyla Vertex burst onto the scene with crushing remixes for Santa Hates You (Rocket Heart EP) and Reaper (Dirty Cash). Now, the band’s debut album Urwerk proves that Skyla Vertex deserves the attention they are starting to receive. The album, which shows that harsh beats and an intellectual approach do not need to contradict each other, is a full concept album with 16 tracks (including remixes by Nachtmahr, Peter Spilles, and guest vocals by Orange Sector). Skyla Vertex is an intriguing new act on the German electro scene, and Urwerk is an incredible debut.

This album reflects William Corsello’s more introspective and experimental songwriting, a slight departure from their freshman release Select a Gather Point. Nine of Clubs is a study in music production, rather than a documentation of a live band. Taking that into perspective, the listener is brought to different eras of music with every song. Different styles and sounds help differentiate recognizable genres from one to the next, all the while keeping it within the wide realm of rock. Important Records is proud to welcome back James Blackshaw for his first full-length album since O True Believers, released in 2006. Blackshaw has since forged a remarkable career, achieving critical praise for his dexterity, deep songwriting, and beautiful arrangements. The six original pieces contained on the album are based alternately around nylon-string classical guitar and grand piano, with spare and subtle vibraphone and B3 organ parts overdubbed by Blackshaw himself. Love Is The Plan is an incredibly warm and intimate recording, and perhaps Blackshaw’s most concise, consistent, and overtly melodic to date. “One of the best and most original instrumentalists in the new, acoustic renaissance.” — David Fricke, Rolling Stone Track Listing: Love Is The Plan, The Plan Is Death • Her Smoke Rose Up Forever • And I Have Come Upon This Place By Lost Ways • A Momentary Taste Of Being • We Who Stole The Dream • The Snows Are Melted, The Snows Are Gone Key Markets: San Francisco, New York, Portland, Boston Also Available IPT 84 (O) O True Believers (793447508429)

Six years after Anoice’s first release in 2006, they finally come out with The Black Rain, which is their reaction to both the darkness and hope that engulfed Japan after the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. The Black Rain was written throughout 2011, and recorded in Tokyo and London. It is both a reflection on disaster and a prayer for healing. The structure of this release flows as an album full of preludes working up to the gigantic full band composition, titled “Finale.” As this finale comes to a close, the attentive listener is rewarded with a soft landing called “Fall Asleep.” Most of the arrangements for The Black Rain are comprised of strings, piano, and organ. Pianos were recorded at various locations, including a hotel ruined by the earthquake.
