WELCOME to the nail family CONSOULING SOUNDS

p. 4

Embedded in the platform for art beyond boundaries, ConSouling Sounds is acting out its own beliefs. The mailorder and the label have taken up the mission to promote all “post” or “doom” music, and to help it find its way to the audience. Why? A simple reason: these innovative types of music continue to hold only a shadowy position in the entire musical landscape. Many interesting bands and unique undertakings never even get the chance to develop. Through the label, ConSouling Sounds offers them the chance to step into the spotlight they deserve. The label is continuously updating and expanding its catalog to make it into a tasty dish for fans as well as those new to the scene.

FIREHOUSE 12 RECORDS

p. 6–7

Firehouse 12 Records is the label arm of Firehouse 12, an award-winning bar, state-of-the-art recording studio, and unusually intimate music venue located in New Haven’s historic Ninth Square District. Co-founded in 2007 by Firehouse 12’s chief engineer Nick Lloyd and acclaimed cornetist/composer Taylor Ho Bynum, Firehouse 12 Records was created to ambitiously document the creative ethos of some of improvised music’s most innovative practitioners. Firehouse 12 Records has an extensive and growing catalog of releases by legendary creative musicians like Anthony Braxton and Bill Dixon, as well as releases by younger groundbreaking artists like Taylor Ho Bynum, Mary Halvorson, and Tyshawn Sorey.

THE RECORD MACHINE

p. 21

The Record Machine is an independent record label, established in 2003 and based in Kansas City, Missouri. In the 10 years since, they have worked with bands from all over the U.S. The goal of The Record Machine is to make an organic community of artists and help connect them with listeners. Tim Finn of the Kansas City Star remarked that the label has “assembled a stable of diverse artists who are making music that deserves national attention.” In 2011, the label founded and curated the inaugural Middle of the Map Fest in Kansas City. The festival, which has featured artists like Fun., Two Door Cinema Club, Neon Indian, Mates of State, Daniel Johnston, Cursive, and Raveonettes, has been an overwhelming success in its first few years!

If the Blue Stahli who created the first two volumes of Antisleep was the fun-loving master of funk who crashed your Hollywood Hills garden party to cannonball off the roof into your pool, the Blue Stahli who made this third volume is the one who, clad in black and backlit by one flickering exit sign, appears in your rearview mirror as you get into your car late one night in a dimly lit and otherwise empty parking garage. Is he there to warn you of imminent danger? Is HE the imminent danger? All you know is that the funk is gone and a sinister chill in the air is making the hair on the back of your neck rise. Better get your key into the ignition … whatever happens next, your life won’t be the same after Antisleep Vol. 3! These 13 new cinematic pieces of instrumental action will be indispensable during YOUR next car chase, dangerous escape, or alien encounter.

Online promotion through social media and specialized news groups. RIYL: Aderlating, Abruptum, Beherit, Swans, Merzbow.

Brutally cathartic and impossibly suffocating, this is doom and noise with a seriously terrifying cinematic edge. This is the 2x10” vinyl reissue of the 2011 album by Gnaw Their Tongues, originally unleashed into the world of the living by Crucial Blast. Finding itself among an extensive discography of pitch black ritual noise chaos, Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus is among some of Gnaw Their Tongues’ most affecting work: an apex of dramatic, nightmarish violence where the doomed distortion and clattering percussion intermingle with alien string squeals and hopeless, depraved shrieks.

Little Women

Lung

Selling Points

• The highly anticipated new album from Brooklyn’s genre-defying Little Women is an epic long-form composition that incorporates tone poem evocation, pop group melodicism, all-vocal intonation, and unparalleled shrapnel-sharp shredding as some of its sonic vista. • Following Throat, their highly acclaimed 2010 release, Lung surprises again in the group’s extreme commitment to transform the listener with their impeccably sculpted sound. • Cover art by renowned underground guitar maestro Mick Barr (Orthrelm/Ocrilim). • RIYL: Lightning Bolt, Little Dragon, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Alice Coltrane, The Thing, Death Grips.

Media & Marketing

• Service/promotion to national press/e-media and targeted regional press by AUM Fidelity. • Service/promotion to college/non-commercial radio by AUM Fidelity. • Ads with Point of Departure, All About Jazz, and more cross-genre online sites.

Lung, the highly anticipated new composition from Brooklyn’s genre-defying Little Women, is an epic without precedent. Where their astonishing and critically acclaimed 2010 suite Throat grabbed listeners by their necks from the first seconds, Lung arises slowly from silence to embrace and entrance. Tenor saxophonist Travis Laplante, alto saxophonist Darius Jones, guitarist Andrew Smiley, and drummer Jason Nazary collectively composed and refined this piece over more than a year. It is a collaborative work at the purest level, and is by far their most dynamic work to date. “Staggering. It has structure and elegance in a tornado of noise, and beauty that cuts through the maelstrom like a ray of light.” — CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“Little Women toggle between extremes with impressive fluidity, and the transitions consistently make sense.” — CHICAGO READER “Little Women make blistering horns vs. guitar music that blazes past the crossroads of jazz and rock to raise dust on the scenic routes of metal and noise.” — IMPOSE

The studio recording of Chicago-based flutist/composer Nicole Mitchell’s extended work inspired by Afro-Futurist writer Octavia Butler (1947–2006), the first science fiction author to receive the MacArthur “Genius” Grant. The piece, realized by her decade-old group Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble, received its world premiere in June 2007 at the 12th annual Vision Festival in New York and was performed again at the Chicago Cultural Center in December 2007. It has been called “dense, dramatic, and daring” (JazzHouse), “haunting and extraordinarily moving” (All About Jazz), and “reminiscent of some of the best work of Sun Ra.” (JazzReview).

Firehouse 12 welcomed esteemed pianist/composer Myra Melford to its roster with the release of The Whole Tree Gone, her first recording as a bandleader since 2006. Recorded in the label’s own state-of-the-art studio, this is Melford’s second release featuring her eclectic ensemble Be Bread, a longstanding collection of frequent collaborators that currently performs as an all-acoustic sextet. The Whole Tree Gone documents the latest evolution of eight original compositions she has been performing with this ensemble, and others, for the past five years. Most of the music on this record came from a suite titled The Whole Place Goes Up, written in Fall 2004 with the support of a Chamber Music America grant.

Bending Bridges is Brooklyn-based guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson’s second recording with her working quintet, and third consecutive title as a leader on Firehouse 12. As on 2010’s Saturn Sings, which appeared on nearly 100 Best of the Year lists, she is joined by trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, saxophonist Jon Irabagon, bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith for a program of new original compositions written specifically for this ensemble. Among other accolades, Halvorson has been described as “hugely inventive” (DownBeat), “daringly unpredictable” (The New Yorker), “a distinct voice” (Slate), “the most original jazz guitarist in a generation” (Washington City Paper), and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Village Voice).

Apparent Distance is a four-part suite commissioned through a 2010 grant from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Since the composition’s premiere in August 2010, the sextet has performed the work on tour and at the Saalfelden Jazz Festival, Banlieues Bleues, and New York’s Crosscurrents Festival. The Village Voice’s Jim Macnie wrote: “Whether they’re lines that swirl upward, chasing their own tail, or lines that spill downward, like a Slinky on a staircase, the elemental motifs of the composer’s pieces are full of springy kinetics. But they’re more than mere nu-jazz puzzles. Bynum wrings emotion from his crew. His use of texture and trajectory has to do with his appreciation of passion.”

Originally hailing from Ljubljana, Slovenia, Torul surprised many electronic music fans with the 2011 release of the album In Whole. The band established itself with the singles “Try” and “Partially Untamed,” both of which climbed into the alternative charts such as DAC, GEWC, DAT20, and EAC. International press and media praised the band as one of the next big things in innovative electro. Torul creates a strong, unique spin on trance-influenced, highly danceable electro-pop, much in the vein of bands such as De/Vision, Mesh, and Iris. Hook-laden and lush, with highly danceable beats, Tonight We Dream Fiercely shows the band continuing where the last album left off.

Kristoph Bathory has been creating music under the name Dawn of Ashes since 2001. Starting off as a horror-industrial act, the sound of DOA has evolved over the years, embracing elements of metal, rock, industrial, and other aggressive music. The new album, Anathema, combines visions of horror, hatred, sexual perversion, and other shocking content, spewed forth in the form of a unique blend of industrial-metal and shock-rock. Featuring guest appearances by Nero Bellum of Psyclon Nine and Gary Zon of Dismantled, Anathema is a catastrophic symphony that stands as a new twist on evil.

Devil To Pay’s fourth full-length album, and debut with Ripple Music, Fate Is Your Muse is an introspective lyrical journey that careens from the metaphysical, to the absurd, to the pragmatic (and back again), all set to bone-crushing heaviness wrapped in elaborate vocal melodies and elegant guitar phrases.

“The magic of Devil To Pay is that … they pump out a song with care and devotion, and then warp it into a whiskey-fueled blast. These songs have the heart, soul, and passion that many modern heavy musicians lack.” — NUVO NEWS

My Only Warm Coals neatly sums up a 15-year span of Emil Amos’ basement home recordings in 19 songs. There are records that come from the soul. No matter how primitive the recording techniques may be, the soul makes its way to the heart and mind of the listener. Samtvogel is one of those records. Günter Schickert recorded this amazing piece of human greatness in 1974, using the media he had at the time, putting his brain to work to find the best way of taping everything he had to say. After three months of work, between June and September 1974, Samtvogel was privately issued that same year. It would later be issued on the Brain label, with a small change in the artwork — titles added to the front cover, which weren’t on the original private pressing. Brain also reissued it on the label’s Rock On Brain LP series, this time with a completely different sleeve. The album contained two tracks on side one and just one on side two, and its sound has often been compared to the most explorative works of Syd Barrett. However, it must be pointed out that Schickert did not need any mind-spreading substances to allow his sounds to float out of his mind and soul; they just came out in the most natural way. It will appeal to fans of the echoed atmospheric guitar work of other Krautrock innovators such as Ash Ra Temple, Manuel Götsching, or A.R. & The Machines, and some may find on the vocal passages certain resemblances to Damo Suzuki in Can!’s Tago Mago era. Sitting at the crossroads between Oxbow’s Eugene S. Robinson and Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart, Sal Mineo is a pure/impure distillate of experimentalism based on 30-second to three-minute-long focused bursts of sonic crime, which plumbs the cooling depths of a pleasure-cruise death trip. These two undisputed heavyweights of musical and emotional non-compromise, whose music leaves tender bruises by whatever sweet blow is rendered, are ready to crack rooms in two with their high-precision silencer of a duo show, combining the best and most free-roaming of both their artistic domains. Eugene S. Robinson puts the work in. From past collaborative efforts with Lydia Lunch, Marianne Faithfull, Gus Van Sant, Steve Albini, DJ Rupture, Bill Cosby, Kathy Acker, Allen Ginsberg, Jarboe, Old Man Gloom, and a passel of side projects passing from electronica to post-punk, Robinson’s work with his primary group Oxbow covers two decades of chaotic complexity, several releases, a few soundtracks, and even a few books. Jamie Stewart has embraced a stevedore’s dedication to the “work harder than any others” ethos over the course of eight records and even more compilations and collaborations — Michael Gira, Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, Carla Bozulich, Larsen, Shearwater — plus splits, singles, live albums, and an endless touring schedule that covers the globe. Stewart’s multi-instrumentalism and obsession with structural chaos and clarity seals whatever deal needs sealing.

Lush with texture, deep with color, and free in its unbound expression, The Crackling maintain their emotional musical vocabulary in this evocative creation. The musical diversity found within the members of the group puts them in demand by several different projects, from Mother Mother and The Be Good Tanya’s to the Gord Grdina and Tyson Naylor Trios. A handful of the best free jazz musicians in the Vancouver scene join the group here, including JP Carter, Peggy Lee, and Jesse Zubot. Josiah Boothby and Eyvind Kang, both from Seattle, also join on their respective instruments. Debra Jean Creelman was responsible for backing vocals, and special guest Dan Mangan sings on two tracks. Lawrence, Kansas’ favorite sons (and daughter), Cowboy Indian Bear make both a reaffirmation and a grand leap forward with their second full-length album Live Old, Die Young. It was captured alongside producer/engineer Joshua Browning over three years that included a grueling touring regimen through multiple blizzards, blown tires, shouting matches in art galleries, travels to exotic locales, and the loss of beloved family members. Trust that the joys and adversities of that period all find their way onto LO,DY in multiple ways.

The Golden Sun of the Great East, the eighth Juno Reactor album, hones the exotic mix of surging trance beats, cinematic vision, and lustrous world music flavors that characterized its predecessors, from propulsive turbo-opener “Final Frontier” to evocative satellite serenade finale “Playing With Fire” and its panoramic chorale of synths, strings, and haunting voices. In between, tracks such as “Invisible,” “Guillotine,” and “Trans Siberian” surge on mammoth waves of sparkling riffs, turbulent drums, and diva vocals, all directed by Watkins’ unique sense of drama. While “Tempest” and “Zombie” introduce darker atmospherics, “Shine” and “To Byculla” hop off the pounding-beats express to deliver a subtler strain of exotic, emotional flow. Studded with future classics, the album seems built for a stratospheric live show. Babes In Consumerland is the new Snog album. It is also the best album the band has ever recorded. Coming a full 21 years after their debut left-field dance floor hit “Corporate Slave,” Babes In Consumerland sees the band in transition as never before. Though not mentioned explicitly lyrically, band mastermind Dee Thrussell’s long journey to recently arrive as a transgender woman informs every musical gesture and plaintive lyric. Joined by dear friends and collaborators Atom TM, Felix Kubin, Ash Wednesday, John Justin Stewart (Grace Jones), and the City of Prague Philharmonic Choir, this is electronic music as you’ve never heard it before: blindingly articulate, fearless, and yet strangely accessible. This year’s incarnation of the legendary Snog is an all-female powerhouse trio delivering slyly subversive electronic pop. You have been warned. Track Listing: The Plug-In Drug • Everything Is Under Control • Adolph’s Library • Bleak Is My Favourite Chic • Otto Rahn • The Corporate Homoerotic Cyclists • The New Cocksucker Blues • Soul Invictus • 21st Century Lullaby • Apocalypse Fatigue Key Markets: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tampa, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Antonio, Boston, Denver, Houston, Seattle, Portland, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Detroit, Pittsburgh

Two By Four is some kind of musical summation of the evolution of Piano Interrupted over the past three years, from an exclusively studio project centered around the manipulation of Tom’s piano by Franz’s computer, to a fully-fledged live band with the addition of Greg Hall on the cello and Eric Young on percussion. Some of the tracks on the album have appeared in various forms on previous releases, but the spirit of the band is one of exploration, mutation, recycling, and reinventing, and the album documents this journey and how the music has evolved though the years. Switchblade have been seething and writhing within Sweden’s prolific underground music community since 1998. Ten years later, with three more albums plus a Swedish Grammy® nomination under their belt, Switchblade are still titans of minimalism, and [2003] marks an integral part of their discography.

Haight Ashbury:

The Beat of a Generation

A wonderful slice of American history that changed the country forever! In a brief four-year span in the late 1960s, in a quaint San Francisco neighborhood less than a mile square, a creative movement emerged that would ignite a musical genre. What would come to be coined “the San Francisco Sound” served as the soundtrack for a counter-culture revolution that would forever challenge the perception of the American ideal. This movement climaxed in a single California season known as the “Summer of Love,” in a neighborhood that provided a canvas for this artistic burst of imagination: Haight Ashbury.
