Rachel Barton Pine: violin J.S.BACH: Complete Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin “Bravura technique and soulful musicianship.” — New York Times “An exciting, boundary-defying performer.” — Washington Post Best-selling violinist Rachel Barton Pine’s relationship with the music of Bach runs deep. She first heard and fell in love with Bach’s music in St. Paul’s Church in her hometown of Chicago. That church is where Rachel first played Bach’s music, at the age of four, and where she returned to record Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas in its beautiful yet clear acoustic. This recording is released to coincide with the 330th anniversary of J. S. Bach’s birth, and is a testament to Rachel’s lifelong relationship with one of the cornerstones of the violin repertoire. Stephan Loges: baritone Maggini Quartet Members of the New London Orchestra CORP: Fields of the Fallen • Dawn on the Somme “Ronald Corp is Britain’s most prolific choral conductor-composer, and with this work he breaks fascinating new ground … a beguiling work, full of scrunchy dissonances but graceful to the ear.” — The Independent These poignant settings by English composer Ronald Corp are a memorial to the First World War and specifically to the Battle of the Somme, which occurred 100 years ago in 1916. The disc comprises two song cycles for baritone with instrumental accompaniment. Fields of the Fallen is a collection of settings of German and British poets, all of whom died during the Great War. It serves to highlight both the differences and the similarities between the two aspects of this bitter campaign. Dawn on the Somme was specifically written to commemorate this bloody and lengthy battle of 1916. Written for string accompaniment, it includes Ronald Corp’s powerful lament with a stark, first-hand account of the war. Release Coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. It was atypical for Hungarian composers between 1945–2000 to write large-scale works; the two composers featured on this disc, András Szőllősy and Gyula Csapó, differ from the mainstream in that each of them usually does.

Adrienne Krausz: piano RACHMANINOV: Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 36 (1931 edition, 2nd version) • LISZT: Sonata in B minor Rachmaninov composed the first version of the B-flat minor sonata in 1913 (exactly 60 years after Liszt composed his B minor sonata), and revised it in 1931. Pianists will argue hammer and tongs about which is the “true” B-flat minor sonata, and matters are further complicated by the fact that Vladimir Horowitz made and performed his own version, with the composer’s consent. What persuaded pianist Adrienne Krausz that the 1931 version is the definitive one, was that Rachmaninov considered it necessary to revise the piece, and felt it was important to remark at the beginning of the new edition that it was “revised and modified by the composer.” Although the piece can be divided into three movements on the basis of tempo indications, like the Liszt sonata this is actually a large-scale work conceived as a single trajectory.

Not only did he enrich the repertoire with many fine scores, he was one of a select group of composers, including Chopin and Liszt, who took the genre in a new direction due to his groundbreaking approach to texture, chords, shifting harmonies, and the use of the pedal, among other features. This selection of vernal songs depicts spring in various musical ways; a common thread in most is that Spring is seen as the force of nature that chases away Winter, and keeps the cold at a distance. Beyond this, the songs vary widely. In the focal point of the program, the allegorical song “Viola” by Schubert, personifies spring and the flowers, as spring is the lover and bridegroom-to-be of Viola, the well-known violet.

In the 18th century it was common practice to hear excerpts from the public’s favorite operas and ballets performed in transcriptions for wind sextet — or sometimes wind octet — both occasionally with an additional bass instrument. This “Harmoniemusik” was all the rage in the last quarter of the 18th century, particularly in Vienna but also in Prague and Budapest. This CD features Harmoniemusik of some of Mozart’s most beloved arias from his operas La Clemenza di Tito, Don Giovanni, and Le nozze di Figaro.
