Overview The Dry Spells, a San Francisco-based female-led ensemble, creates a unique sound drawing from traditional folk ballads of lost loves, unimaginable sorrows, and nostalgia for a forgotten past, charged with an array of electric and acoustic instrumentation and intricate vocal harmonies. The band, made up of past and current members of SF’s critically lauded retro-prog-psych transcendentalist outfit Citay, finds inspiration in the intersection of traditional folk music with electric instrumentation. On the band’s debut album, Too Soon for Flowers, the Dry Spells prove gifted at songwriting as well as interpretation, presenting a song cycle that invites listeners to join them as they traverse an arboreal path less taken, to an uncertain yet revered destination. Along the way, there will be epic songs of deep-sea weddings, sirens, and gold rush tragedies, each illuminating a bit of the path ahead and offering another piece of the puzzle.

“Harmonies that evoke the minimal post-punk of Electrelane and the maximal ethno-folk-punk of Camper Van Beethoven.” — SF Bay Guardian

Press Quotes “Jerome Reuter has taken his apocalyptic folk project ROME to another level of excellence … an artist that possesses an uncanny ability to mix the breadth of beauty with the depth of despair.” — Virus-Mag “ROME’s sound contains the romanticism of neo-folk, but with a punk aesthetic that lifts the sound and imagery it produces away from the other artists who dominate this genre.” — Judas Kiss magazine

Selling Points • Well established neo-folk band with a cult following. • Long awaited fourth album from this exceptional band. • US tour in Fall 2009. • Beautiful four-panel embossed digipak. • Promo copies will be sent to DJs/radio stations and print & web media. • MySpace campaign with 100,000 contacts. • Ads with Vampire Freaks.

Overview With Flowers From Exile, the Luxembourg folk formation ROME surpasses all of its work to date, which includes three full-length albums in just a few years. Early releases were apocalyptic and aggressive in nature, while 2008’s Masse Mensch Material revealed the band’s inner vision. ROME’s universe was expanding via proud resignation and sweet melancholy. The group’s latest album goes a step further in this direction. Similar to the early albums of legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen, stories from the (inner) exile are told with fatalistic gestures and dark timbre—of the longing for a lost homeland, of loneliness and eternal travels, but also of unexpected friends and the homeland in one’s own heart. Songs such as “The Secret Sons of Europe” and “To Die Among Strangers” form a song cycle full of metaphors for estrangement. Highly detailed arrangements use the sound of flamenco guitar as well as mysterious samples, pulsating beats, and sad melodies. In ROME’s songs, there lives a stoic sense of the melodramatic. As well as Cohen, one must look to icons such as Tom Waits and the late Johnny Cash in order to describe the lyrics and voice of Jerome Reuter. Flowers From Exile is just as much an emotional as a critical work—the personally stamped album of a modern singer-songwriter that tells of journeys both within and without. Reuter’s moving vocals and Patrick Damiani’s complex musical arrangements leave the musical roots of folk far behind, sending “flowers from exile” to all listeners who are prepared to recognize themselves in the restless spirits this 12-part song cycle conjures.

DJ Spooky & Matthew Shipp Trio DJ Spooky & Matthew Shipp Trio Genre: Jazz/Hip-Hop Label: La Huit DVD: LAH DVD 16 Price Code: U (SRP $19.99) Amaray; Box Lot 25

DJ Spooky and Matthew Shipp represent the quintessence of contemporary New York sound. Their concerts exude an urban energy that springs directly from street music, but with an element of historic, cultural, and social conscience. Here, a radical yet simple shooting method captures this bold energy: four handheld cameras onstage with an interior, embedded point of view, caught up in a whirlwind of rhythms and hyper jump-cut editing that saturates the senses. This DVD presents a rather demanding musical and visual adventure that does a good job of rendering the tensions present in an America that—at the time the film was shot—hadn’t yet attempted to revive its dream.

Selling Points • Re-release of 1961 album features Ray Barretto, Clark Terry, Doc Cheatham, and more. • Will be featured in a major Lincoln Center festival two weeks before release date. • Anticipate major PR coverage from NPR, New York Times, Fader, and much more.

Overview This 1961 Riverside Records album is one of the greatest ruses of 20 th century American pop music, a forgotten masterpiece of cross-cultural disguise and masquerade. Neither Juan nor his Latin Lantzmen were actually Lantzmen, and only some were actually Latin. Juan was John Cali, an Italian-American banjo picker and radio veteran best known for his work with the Vincent Lopez Orchestra and a string of solo banjo outings. His Latin Lantzmen included some of the biggest names in ’50s and ’60s Latin music—conguero Ray Barretto, timbales guru Wilie Rodriguez, pianist Charlie Palmier—playing alongside African-American jazz greats Clark Terry, Doc Cheatham, Lou Oles, and Wendell Marshall. The sole Lantzmen was Yiddish vocalist Ed Powell. Mazel Tov, Mis Amigos was far more musically vivid than many of its Latin-Jewish ancestors, laced with flashes of jazz improvisation and montuno vamping. “Papirossen,” a usually mournful ode to cigarettes, is done as a blazing, quickstep mambo. “Yossel, Yossel” had become popular as “Joseph! Joseph!,” a crossover swing-era hit for the Andrews Sisters and Glenn Miller, but the Lantzmen stick with the original Yiddish version only to turn it into a cha-cha. “Havah Nagila” also gets the cha-cha treatment, and “Die Greene Koseene,” the classic 1920s Abe Schwartz ode to a greenhorn cousin on the Lower East Side, conjures different 1960s New York immigrant worlds with its makeover as a Dominican merengue.

Overview Balmorhea’s All Is Wild, All Is Silent has received praise from critics, fans, and—most importantly—from the band’s close friends, many of whom are musicians. The band asked a few of these friends if they’d like to remix a track, and from Eluvium’s blissful drones to Bexar Bexar’s metallic wall of noise, the result is distinctly more experimental than the original album, but no less joyous or haunting.

A message from Andrew W.K.: “It gives me great pleasure to announce my partnership with The Evaporators as we release a new split 7” EP! I’m honored to be part of this special musical moment. I’ve been a fan of Nardwuar since I first saw him on bootleg VHS copies of his cable access TV shows. Then I found out about The Evaporators, and I was even more blown away. I’ve recorded my own cover versions of two classic Canadian punk tunes: The Leather Uppers’ “Don’t Sell Hot Dogs Tonight” and Subhumans “Oh Canaduh.” Plus, you get your own dose of The Evaporators, with the original tune “The Bombs In My Pants” and a cover, “Oh Non,” originally by 1960s Montreal group Les Hou-Lops.”

Synthesisia I Dreamed a World of Darkness and You the White Light Shining Genre: Experimental Label: Bluesanct CD: BLE 87 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99)

Isaac Edwards has become known for his persistently patient, detailed work as the arranger and keyboardist for Odawas. Time and again he has enveloped gentle voices and songwriting with hints of danger, tangents of love, and endless amounts of emotion that may or may not have been there in the first place. As in life, he likes to take music to its moment of fatality, where it must make a grasp for immortality or die penniless and alone.

Overview Bluesanct announces the fourth release in the Art Vinyl series. Like its predecessors, this is a beautiful single with an exclusive recording on one side and a screen-printed image of the song on the other side, all housed in a letter-pressed sleeve. This exclusive 12-minute epic not only gives us the drones and hushed guitar Boduf Songs are known for, but also ventures into their (partially) suppressed doom underpinnings. The record is accompanied by gorgeous specially commissioned artwork by Norwegian artist Johannes Hoie, whose apocalyptic scenes perfectly embody the yearning for the black sun that is Boduf Songs.

ESSO TRINIDAD STEEL BAND

VAN DYKE PARKS PRESENTS THE ESSO TRINIDAD STEEL BAND “Produced by Van Dyke Parks, the Esso Trinidad Steel Band’s selftitled LP is a wonderfully funky collection of calypso-inspired renditions of pop hits like the Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ and Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Cecilia.’ The sheer magnitude and intricacy of the steel drumming is astounding. The two-dozen percussionists are like cogs in a colossal machine, each … working in perfect harmony with the others and all of them essential to the outcome. Parks’ sun-kissed production contributes mightily to the overall party vibe. This music is the tropical fantasia of the collective unconscious.” — All Music Guide

Press Quotes “Vol. 1 comprises seven compositions, each tagged with appropriately cosmic titles like ‘Outer Nothingness’ and ‘Nebulae.’ Ra’s bass marimba and electronic celeste consort with the supple pulse of Boykins’ peripatetic bass and the two erect luminous tonal lattices for the horns to hang upon.” — Derek Taylor

Recorded by Richard Alderson on April 20, 1965, this set of tunes finds Sun Ra introducing groundbreaking concepts by using synthesizers and having the Arkestra musicians double on percussion.

Overview Ezra Carey’s story on The Fire Keeps Us Warm is one of grief, loss, depression, revival, and acceptance, told with stark sincerity without making the record a downer. Drawn from a well of grief and self-destruction, Carey’s songs do not overflow with the selfpity and woe-is-me sentiments that they easily could, given the trials of his life during the album’s conception. Tethered by Andrew Schneider’s elastic bass playing and anchored by Kevin White’s powerful drumming, Pig Charmer is the perfect vehicle for Whitehead’s angular, soulful songwriting. The three-part composition, with its great humility and contemplative simplicity, heralded a new period of work and was the first in a series of masterpieces inspired by Tibetan Buddhism: Adnos II (1980), Adnos III (1981), Songs of Milarepa (1983), Jetsun Mila (1986), and the Trilogy of Death: Kyema (1988), Kailasha (1991), and Koume (1993). Recorded in the composer’s studio in Paris.

Overview 1970 was an important year in Eliane Radigue’s musical life, since it was the year just before she acquired her ARP 2500 synthesizer. In the last year that she dedicated to feedback, several milestone pieces saw the light of day: Omnht, a wonderful sound installation for three out-of-phase tape loops and wall-mounted loudspeakers; Labyrinthe Sonore (premiered at Mills College in collaboration with Pauline Oliveros, Maggie Payne, and William Winant); Opus 17, one of her first compositions in fixed duration (according to Rhys Chatham, a decisive piece that would change his own compositional career); and Vice-Versa, etc., which appears to be her very last feedback loop composition. Originally, only 10 signed and numbered copies of this little box set were released— needless to say, this is a work that has been nearly forgotten! The work is now reissued as a double CD, with the tape played respectively forwards and backwards at four different speeds, corresponding to the standards of the tape recorders of the time. This will allow dedicated listeners to experiment with simultaneous playback of the work’s different versions, recreating the conditions of the original installation.
