In a dark room, through a haze induced by fog machines, an infectious sound floods your brain-space, a driving synth rock voyage guided by a female voice that commands attention in its come-hither breathiness. This transcendent experience is called Reporter, and now, the songs that have set countless dance floors ablaze have been laid to tape in top form. The band is certainly conscious of the past, employing their vast personal collection of ’70s/’80s equipment to create a sound influenced by Italo Disco and French House of previous decades. Simultaneously, though, they are obsessed with the future—the possibility of rising above the blasé indie rock aesthetic and onto a grand planet of light, movement, and pure energy, where a rock band can be an ecstatic phenomenon.

You The Darkness And Me is an exploration of solitude and reconnection with the earth. The music is as direct and innovative as Beirut or Neutral Milk Hotel, but the lyrical themes are unique to its writer, Dustin Hamman. The songs on this album confront some of the starkest realities about living in this world: there is only you alone to take care of yourself, and that responsibility begins anew every day. But, at the same time, it is a celebration of the beauty of the world—of the simple delight of walking in the morning, of envying the life of an oak tree, of staring into a nighttime lightning storm, and welcoming the excitement of it all.

This deeply personal record by the most recent member of The New Pornographers is bound to be one of 2010’s most innovative releases. Are You My Mother? is a beguiling album that—because of the wisdom and experience communicated by Kathryn Calder’s voice— gives the illusion of being written by someone in the twilight of their years, while at the same time expressing the excitement and wonder of a young woman who is just finding her own voice.
Press Quotes
“Kathryn Calder’s keyboards and vocals remain lovely and emotionally telling.” — All Music Guide “Kathryn Calder, who replaced Neko Case [in the New Pornographers] on vocals and keys, is incredibly charming and charismatic.” — Craig Ginn (singer/ guitsrist, The Hold Steady) in the Guardian “Onstage at Pitchfork Music Festival … it’s hard to tell that Kathryn Calder is standing in for an alt-country queen. Her clear alto voice blends perfectly with uncle Carl ‘A.C.’ Newman’s baritone, making it easy to tell she’s been doing this for a while.” — Venus “The only person in the New Pornographers you’ve never heard of, Calder might change her luck with this painterly wisp of a song [‘Slip Away’], from her upcoming solo disc Are You My Mother? ” — Washington Post

Noblesse Oblige was formed in London in 2004 by French actress/singer/songwriter Valerie Renay and German musician/producer Sebastian Lee Philipp. Their debut album Privilege Entails Responsibility is considered one of the classics of the independent electro underground scene. After moving to Berlin in 2007, the band released their second album, In Exile, to much critical acclaim. For 2010, Noblesse Oblige releases Malady, an occult concept album that cites as influences the visual mysticism of Kenneth Anger, Aleister Crowley’s storytelling, and the morbid melancholy of Christina Rossetti’s poetry. The album was initiated by the bands’ involvement in Robert Pacitti’s 2009 London Spill Festival Tarot Deck project, for which Noblesse Oblige were asked to visualize their own interpretation of The Lovers Major Arcana card.

Kolja Trelle a.k.a. Soman is by far one of Germany’s hottest exports in industrial dance music. Starting off as sound engineer and remixer, Trelle released his debut album Sound Pressure in 2003. With his music, he created a strong fusion of modern industrial beats and rhythms combined with the influence of warm melodic trance sounds. Featuring the club hit “Divine,” Sound Pressure quickly began storming DJ playlists worldwide, as did Soman’s follow-up efforts, such as the DAC chart-topping Unleash EP and the album Mask. Soman now returns to Metropolis for the new Noistyle, and once again delivers an album of uncompromising sound structures, mixing noise, electro, industrial, and techno to devastating effect. As with each of its predecessors, Noistyle expands the boundaries of Soman’s beatdriven repertoire.

Italian heavy rock band The LoveCrave joins Metropolis Records with brand new album Soul Saliva, a masterpiece of original modern rock with great personality and awesome songwriting. Soul Saliva is a rock album incorporating great ideas with a deeply modern way of producing and arranging music. Its musical style pulls influences from across 30 years of music, from the ’80s to today, without being afraid of experimentation. Gloomy elements mix with powerful guitars, driving percussion, singer Francesca Chiara’s enchanting vocals, and elegant synths. The lyrics touch on subjects such as war, rebellion, violence towards women, and childbirth. Deep, modern, and angry, Soul Saliva is a must for fans of hard rock.

Overview
With The Giant Crushes You, Abner Trio has created an album that triangulates exactness, rawness, and beauty. Nearly three years in the making, Abner Trio’s second full length is hands-down the most accomplished documentation of their mathy, artsy, honest, and allaround original blend of indie-rock. This giant of a record may indeed crush you, but that’s only because it’s giving you a bear hug and it doesn’t know its own strength. Boosted by a fearless, punch-you-in-the-face positivity that is both rare and refreshing, Abner Trio mashes tumbling guitar lines, bewildering arrangements, and idiot savant spoken word into songs that (amazingly) sound a lot like pop music. Beneath the weirdness, the music of Abner Trio contains an unwavering and highly developed pop sensibility, brought to the forefront by their densely layered and meticulously arranged vocal melodies. Bothering very little with traditional song structures, AT seems to allow the songs to move where they’re supposed to, lilting and bursting along like a feelgood Sebadoh gorged on US Maple.

Bill Baird (Sunset) created these rich ambient works using primarily analog keyboards, piano, and other acoustic instruments, as well as a variety of guest performers. The album was created directly following a period of intense focus and frustration recording a major label album for Capitol Records. Dedicated to 2” 24-track tape as quickly and as unfussily as possible, the album nevertheless comes across as an intensely focused and rewarding exercise in ambient music. The snapshot quality of the recordings carries an undeniable immediacy, and the qualityintensive recording process adds a natural depth not felt in the run-of-the-mill laptop-derived ambience.

Until 2009, Sleep Good was just a moniker for Will Patterson’s solo recordings, but it has now become a live band with four other members: Willis McClung, Michael Bain, Marc Miner, and John Kolar. Skyclimber was recorded onto a ½” eighttrack tape machine in Patterson’s bedroom. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered directly onto tape without the help of a computer, and without any edits. Though recorded with strict analog limitations, you won’t hear anything resembling the “lo-fi movement.” The warm analog sound is simply the perfect match for Sleep Good’s effortless pop.

Press Quotes
“True to the evocation of the duo’s name, that of a Japanese songbird heralding the coming summer, the music plays with contemplative bliss and edged rock psychosis.” — Byron Coley & Thurston Moore, in Arthur “This is bliss-out drone music the way it was meant to be experienced, in massive mind expanding chunks. Shimmery clouds of ambient high-end guitar drone and squiggly brain tickling twinkles, with pulsing low end and distant clatter. Gorgeous, otherworldly, and totally essential.” — Aquarius Records

Press QUOTES
“The most important and consistently underrated space rock unit of the ’70s, Cluster (originally Kluster) was formed … as an improv group that used everything from synthesizers to alarm clocks and kitchen utensils in their performances. Continuing on as a duo, Moebius and Roedelius eventually recorded many landmark LPs—separately, as a duo, and with all manner of guest artists from Brian Eno to Conny Plank to Neu!’s Michael Rother—in the field of German space music often termed kosmische.” — All Music Guide

Longtime collaborators Laura Watling, Ed Mazzucco, Tim Morris, and Dwayne Palasek began working together in the 1990s as The Autocollants. In 2006 they teamed up with Matthew Bice (who incidentally runs Shelflife Records with Mazzucco) to form Tears Run Rings. Their diaphanous debut EP, A Question and an Answer, was self-released in the spring of 2007, and a long player entitled Always Sometimes Seldom Never emerged on Clairecords one year later. The band’s second album, Distance, arrives in August 2010.

It wasn’t too long ago that four of Lubbock’s most-loved veteran musicians decided the state of Texas country music was dismal at best, and horrifying at its worst. Somehow, over the last 20 years, it became acceptable for a group of frat boys to show up in thrift-store AC/DC shirts, play half-assed Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes about drinking Lone Star and smoking weed, and call that “country.” Well, good friends, The Beaumonts didn’t think it was “all that damn country,” and decided to do something about it. What resulted was the truest of true country, something akin to the creation of the universe, but with Telecasters. Behold, good friends, and delight in the majesty of The Beaumonts! Put on your dancin’ shoes, put a call in to your best girl, and get the bail money down from the closet, because The Beaumonts are comin’ to your town, and you’re gonna need to be ready. Are you ready?

Overview
Remixed and remastered for the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Andrew Lamb’s New Orleans Suite is a testament to the continued power and relevance of jazz, pouring out a wide range of emotions for listeners: shock, anger, sadness, and hope. Warren Smith uses a plethora of percussion add-ons to uniquely color the CD’s six selections. The space and eerie sounds on “The Backwater” are meant to describe waiting in darkness and sunlight for days without help. The title is drawn from the old Bessie Smith classic “Backwater Blues,” in which the Empress of the Blues sings what it’s like to wait in floodwaters to be rescued. Tom Abbs takes a beautiful cello solo on “Katrina’s Path,” and throws in tasteful didgeridoo braying in addition to his muscular bass playing. Lamb plays harmonica and clarinet, in addition to his usual freight-train tenor. Recorded three weeks after the hurricane, Lamb, Smith, and Abbs are a storm unto themselves, making something beautiful out of such suffering.

“They kind of rock a sweet Torche-esque thing with the heavy but catchy melodic shit. Like most bands like this that are good, they bring in an influence from ’90s heavier hardcore shit like His Hero Is Gone as well.” — itmifpitw.com

Formed in 2008 in Denver, Black Sleep of Kali started when guitarist\vocalist Taylor Williams moved to Denver from Salt Lake City. In March 2010, the band headed to Salt Lake to record with Andy Paterson. Eight songs were recorded in a blur of five long, hard, frustrating days, but the band emerged confident with its Small Stone debut. The album, titled Our Slow Decay, is full of huge riffs, catchy vocals, and furious drumming that is sure to leave its mark on the doom/metal genre.
