Storyville Records is one of the world’s greatest jazz record labels, and the oldest independent jazz label in Europe. Named after the notorious New Orleans district where jazz was born, the label was launched in Copenhagen in 1952 by jazz fanatic Karl Emil Knudsen. By late 2003, when this self-styled “Doctor of Jazz Archaeology” passed away, his Storyville label was considered by the jazz cognoscenti to be the Scandinavian equivalent to America’s Blue Note Records. The Storyville archive includes recordings by Louis Armstrong, Ben Webster, Duke Ellington, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and Benny Carter, to name but a few. Storyville was also instrumental in launching the careers of some of the most influential Danish jazz artists, including Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Fessor’s Big City Band, and the legendary Papa Bues Viking Jazz Band. In 2005, a Danish company named Editions Wilhelm Hansen acquired Storyville from Knudsen’s family. We are sure that Karl Emil would be delighted to know that his label lives on within a fiercely independent music company that shares his passion for great music.

Dave Liebman leads the brightest New York jazz musicians in dynamic fashion through incredible arrangements of the jazz legend’s compositions, seldom arranged for big band. • Features all-new arrangements of Dave Liebman’s compositions, including “As Always” arranged by Grammy finalist Pete McGuinness (“Smile”). • Made up of the brightest, most creative New York jazz musicians, the level of musicianship in Liebman’s band is so high that it easily breaks the boundaries of the traditional big band. • In addition to Liebman’s compositions and the writer’s creative arrangements, the unique sound of the DLBB is due to how easily the group traverses the line between tonality and atonality, executes dramatic stylistic changes and, most importantly, creates collaborations of improvised music that are so well-aligned with the compositions it is hard to tell what is improvised. • This, coupled with Liebman’s never-ending pursuit of all possible avenues of expression in his soprano sax playing, offers the listener a new approach to the big band tradition. • Service to jazz radio and JazzWeek reporting stations. classic reissue
Newly repackaged classic reissue of a CD that has been absent from stores for quite some time! • Since My Goal’s Beyond was originally released in 1971, its reputation has continued to grow and it has come to be regarded as a modern classic. • “Peace One” and “Peace Two” offer a heady mix of jazz and Indian classical music, something quite unfamiliar at the time but which, in retrospect, can be seen to anticipate some of the world music developments to come. • McLaughlin assembled an especially interesting mix of musicians for “Peace One” and “Peace Two,” planting the seed for what would flower into the enormously influential Mahavishnu Orchestra. • If “Peace One” and “Peace Two” look ahead into the future, the lovely group of intimate acoustic solos that follow are more of a tribute to McLaughlin’s past, and recently formed, influences and associations. • Liner notes in English & French. John McLaughlin: guitars Billy Cobham: drums Dave Liebman: saxophone Charlie Haden: bass Airto Moreira: percussion Badal Roy: tabla Jerry Goodman: violin Mahalakshmi: tamboura • Peace One • Peace Two • Goodbye Pork Pie Hat • Something Spiritual • Hearts and Flowers • Phillip Lane • Waltz for Bill Evans • Follow Your Heart • Song for My Mother • Blue In Green “The startling thing about this record is that it points the way toward two directions McLaughlin would take in the future—exploring Indian music and the acoustic guitar—and this while he was in the thick of the burgeoning electronic jazz-rock movement … Throughout, McLaughlin’s acoustic lines faultlessly straddle the line between the subcontinent and jazz, and the ethereal results still hold up beautifully today.” — All Music Guide “This album is a true masterpiece. My Goal’s Beyond set standards for acoustic guitar playing that remain today. McLaughlin’s soloing and chord playing was a revelation even to those familiar with his electric guitar style. He snapped the steel strings with the confidence of a warrior. His playing was amazingly fast, yet still melodic, and his tune selection was unusually eclectic. He was coming from an entirely new place. MGB is considered to be a milestone in the career of John McLaughlin, and the history of acoustic jazz guitar. To this day, there are many who claim it is still the greatest of all McLaughlin records. I recommend listening to this record once a month for the rest of your life.” — All About Jazz Key Markets: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Seattle, Portland

New releases
This compilation celebrates songwriter, guitarist, and Grammy Award winner JJ Cale in new instrumental recordings by leading ZOHO Roots artists and their musical collaborators. • JJ Cale, one of the truly distinctive songwriters and a true original of the American Southwest, has created a large catalog of rootsy, laidback, and laconic songs that have been covered by the likes of Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Band, Bob Dylan, and Santana. His last major label release with Eric Clapton, Road to Escondido, won a Grammy Award in 2008. • This compilation features many of Cale’s most famous songs from early in his career in the 1970s, such as “Cocaine,” Crazy Mama,” “Money Talks,” and Cajun Moon.” • This 14-track instrumental compilation recasts many of JJ’s greatest songs across a wide range of roots music styles, from the contemporary electric blues of Swamp Cabbage and the Nashville country sounds of Dixie Tabernacle to the arena-sized, early Led Zeppelin-styled hard rock of Rufus Huff and the acoustic bluegrass of Tim & Roddy Smith’s Groove Gang. • Other “celebrity” contributors to this tribute include vocalists JJ Grey (Mofro), Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie, Jeff Beck), bassist Darryl Jones (Rolling Stones), keyboardist Mike Finnegan (Jimi Hendrix, Taj Mahal), and drummer Charley Dreyton (Herbie Hancock, Iggy Pop). • Publicity by Jim Eigo, Jazz Promo Services. • Ads in DownBeat and Blues Revue. • Rufus Huff: Crazy Mama • Rufus Huff: Cocaine • Swamp Cabbage: Don’t Cry Sister • Swamp Cabbage: Cajun Moon • Swamp Cabbage: Same Old Blues • Walter Parks: Don’t Cry Sister • Dixie Tabernacle: Any Way The Wind Blows • Dixie Tabernacle: Lies • Greg Skaff: Don’t Wait • Greg Skaff: Money Talks • Michael Powers: Louisiana Women • Michael Powers: Travelin’ Light • Tim & Roddy Smith’s Groove Gang: Ride Me High • Doug Phelps & Larry Goad: Down To Memphis “How cool, a tribute to Cale and he isn’t even dead yet … In the wake of his Grammy win with Clapton, ZOHO Roots got the label’s gang fired up to pay tribute to the southern treasure and it seems like very little coaxing was needed to get people on board and to give their all. Since a Cale album is a once in a blue moon thing, this sort of greatest hits from august vets and sure-footed newcomers is a dandy thing. Suppose this is your first taste of Cale and you wouldn’t be able to handle his laconic style on his own records. This is a fine place to jump in, only 40 years too late. Check it out.” — Midwest Record Key Markets: Nashville, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles

• Since Gootch was formed back in 2005, their lineup hasn’t changed much and neither has their style: consistent, straightforward rock & roll served up hard, loud, and tight. It’s not surprising that bands such as AC/DC, Hermano, Motörhead, Danko Jones, Velvet Revolver, Queens of the Stone Age, Wolfmother, and Kyuss are listed as their greatest influences. • Fans with an appetite for international heavy rock who are familiar with Belgian bands such as Millionaire, Arid, Triggerfinger, Cowboys & Aliens, and Channel Zero will certainly dig Gootch. • Avoiding the clichés and corporate blandness that suffocate music today, this band is like a breath of fresh air for music fans. Inspired by the great classic rock of the past, Gootch will help pave the road for tomorrow. Rock should never be safe! • Promo copies have been mailed to all relevant media: magazines, radio stations, and websites.

• Metro is the debut album from experimental multi-instrumentalists Taku Hirano and Daniel Pearson, otherwise known as the band Tao of Sound. The rich selection of songs on the album were all composed, arranged, produced, and performed by the duo, with the exception of two compositions from renowned musicians Kitaro and Kenji Bunch. • The album appears after an impressive career run performing and recording with a wide array of talents, including some of the biggest names in the American music industry: Jay-Z, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, and Nine Inch Nails. • Having made a name for themselves as expert remix artists (including such recent, notable works as Kanye West’s “Heartless” and tracks from the Michael Jackson Remix Suite), this album allows the Tao of Sound to step to the front of the stage with their eclectic, ever-changing style. Alternately pulsating and mellow, the varied compositions on Metro cover an impressive gamut of styles and sounds, informed by the breadth of their experience with other artists. • Full promo servicing to all national, indie, and online retailers along with national and regional co-op advertising. Consumer print advertising will mirror publicity and editorial efforts. Multi-tiered campaign targeting NPR, nationally syndicated and commercial specialty programs, CMJ & NAR reporting stations, selected AAA stations, satellite providers, webcasters, and regional public broadcasters. • This Paradise Music compilation, compiled by electronic producer Helios, was designed to mirror the chilled grooves of Ibiza and its famous Café del Mar nightclub. As such, listeners are greeted with silky smooth lounge pieces, sultry rhythms, and sunny melodies that recall a sunset (or sunrise) in the tropics. The music offers a mix of tempos to keep things interesting. Seventy-eight minutes of non-stop peacefulness … the cover says it all. • “Tree Top,” the album’s opening track by Helios, starts the album off on a cool note with a nice blend of laid-back beats and electric guitar. • Jazzy tones and light new age elements blend on songs by Wax Club and Chris Conway. • Midway through the album, the tempos drop into the soft dreamy realm with relaxed tracks by Llewellyn and Andreas, before returning to the funky side with the nicely chilled “Onwards” from Aetherium. • A great album for setting a perfectly chilled atmosphere. • Emotions quietly stir and resonate in this deeply self-reflective album exploring the terrain between melodic electronic/ambient and modern minimalism. These six pieces utilize gentle melody, harmony, and sonic tonality to poignantly reflect upon the passage of time, life lived, lives passed, and a time of renewal: a sigh of the ages expressed in sound. • For this journey, Roach drew on his essential collection of beloved analog synthesizers including a classic 40-year-old Arp String Ensemble, a historic polyphonic synthesizer that swirls and rolls upon itself like the strong currents of a rushing mountain river. • Sigh of Ages is the result of extended periods of solitude and personal reflection for the acclaimed composer. Sculpted and refined in his deft hands, the source material of life itself took on a voice that spoke from a deep emotional well of subtle contemplation. • RIYL: Arvo Pärt, Harald Budd, Erik Satie. • Roach piece recently included on Eckhart Tolle’s Music to Quiet The Mind CD. • Perfect release for contemplation, relaxation, meditation, and yoga. • Free Steve Roach iPad app out to coincide with release of Sigh of Ages. • Radio service with special focus on Echoes, Hearts of Space, Sirius Ambient, and Somafm. • Direct push to fan base via website, MySpace, and Facebook. • Winston McAnuff was born in the hills of Jamaica in 1957, where reggae was ingrained in his life from an early age. Onstage, this pastor’s son—nicknamed “Electric Dread”—steps beyond his role as Rastafarian preacher, performing with a fiery spirit that is as distinctive as it is jovial. But where does his boundless energy come from after so many years of silence? • In contrast to his stage charisma, on this DVD we share moments in an intimate setting. Against a neutral backdrop of a stage under construction, with guitar in hand, he recounts stories about Rasta culture. His words and prayers evoke poetry from far-off Jamaica, the land of his first musical inspiration and his first life-changing encounters. Even though this great island is far away, the ghosts of elders are ever-present. Electric Dread philosophizes… Winston McAnuff: vocals Thomas ’Drummy’ Joint-Lambert: drums Daniel ‘Dan’ Moustin: bass Xavier ‘Cubix’ Begue: guitar Jimmy Zaccardelli: keyboards Guillaume ‘Stepper’ Briard, Eric ‘Rico’ Gaultier: saxophones Thomas Henning: trombone

New Releases • Django Reinhardt, the pure genius, became the greatest European jazz musician. The Rosenberg Trio, from the Netherlands, is estimated to be leading gypsy ensemble in the musical genre of “Manouche Swing” or “Gypsy Jazz” that owes its very existence to Reinhardt. • The Trio will play the Montreal Festival in July 2010. • Following the great gypsy musical tradition, these three cousins were taught to practice restlessly, playing the classics over and over again. After the release of their first album, Seresta (1989), their career has taken them worldwide. • Django was always a pioneer: a restless composer (although he could not write or read music), an unequalled guitar player who immediately sensed the potential of the Selmer (Maccaferri) guitar, and even an explorer of its amplified sounds. Even today, 100 years after his birth, Django remains surrounded by a double aura of prestige and mystery.
