William van Ekeren: piano, vocals BACH & BUKOWSKI: Walking and Living Through This An extraordinary mixture of piano and singing through which Bach’s baroque music and Bukowski’s hard-driven lines sound simultaneously! Willem van Ekeren formed several bands as a teenager, and as the years passed he found himself drawn more and more to classical piano. In 1994 he chanced upon the book The Last Night of the Earth Poems by Charles Bukowski, and he immediately fell in love with it. In 1997, while reading it for the third time, he was struck by the fact that “You know and I know and thee know” was the ultimate text for the F minor prelude of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier. The next day at the piano he started to combine the two pieces, and the results are presented on this excellent disc.

Release Date: August 10, 2010 Anneke Veenhoff: fortepiano Nicole van Bruggen: basset clarinet Jane Rogers: viola MOZART: Grande Sonate (anon. arr. of the Clarinet Quintet in A, K. 582, for fortepiano & basset clarinet (premiere) It may seem surprising that after three decades of ‘early music’ research, critical discoveries can still be made about a great composer such as Mozart—particularly discoveries around his well-known masterpieces. This recording presents the premiere recording of the Grande Sonate, an anonymous arrangement for fortepiano and basset clarinet of Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581. Both the Clarinet Quintet and the Concerto in A major, K. 622, were originally written for an instrument called the basset clarinet, which has four more chromatic notes at the bottom of its range than an ordinary clarinet. Since the manuscripts to both pieces were lost, clarinetists have had to make educated guesses about the passages that may have included these low notes. Significantly, this arrangement includes some of these basset notes, making it an important source for those wishing to restore the piece to its original form.

The orchestra was founded in 1845 and had an uneven history as it struggled to survive, but in more recent years it has gained in reputation and toured in other countries including China. The orchestra appears in Madrid and Barcelona regularly, and has been designated as one of the great world orchestras.

The Evil Penguin pays homage to Belgian clarinet virtuoso Walter Boeykens with a series of three CDs! It is only fitting that at the beginning of his life’s autumn, Boeykens wanted to record the Clarinet Quintet, the masterpiece that Brahms wrote after he had (re)discovered the clarinet late in his own life. The result is a deeply moving registration by a truly great artist. The full extent of Boeykens’ importance becomes obvious when watching the bonus DVD that accompanies the recording (a key passage is Boeykens’ work with Pierre Boulez while premiering the latter’s composition Domaines). DVD is PAL format, not NTSC, but is compatible with some newer machines and most computer platforms.

Like Toots Thielemans, clarinet virtuoso Walter Boeykens is one of the few Belgians who have achieved world fame in music. On this vintage recording, Boeykens tackles some seldom-played but fascinating 20th century repertoire. Both the neo-classicism of Marcel Poot & Jean Françaix, and the dodecaphony of August Verbesselt, reflect the 19th century tradition, but also react against its pathos. Recorded with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Belgian Radio in the famous acoustic of the Flagey building in Brussels.

On his third recording for the Penguin, Walter Boeykens explores 19th century chamber repertoire for two clarinets. There are interesting family ties between the original and the current performers. Mendelssohn wrote his Konzertstücke for two clarinets for father and son Heinrich and Carl Baermann, both exceptional clarinet virtuosi. Carl—no mean composer himself—wrote a Duo Concertant, which he performed with his father. And like Heinrich, Walter Boeykens has a talented daughter (Anne) to play the second clarinet in this program of delightfully accessible salon music.

Bach preferred the smaller clavichord for home entertainment. Benjamin-Joseph Steens challenges our listening habits by performing the mythical Goldberg Variations on the clavichord, demonstrating that—despite its delicacy—the instrument does full justice to Bach’s intimacy and emotion, as well as to the dazzling architecture of the music. Handel. While oboes and recorders abound as solo instruments in Handel’s operas and oratorios, there are almost no obligato flutes in them. Although it has been contended that the timbre of the flute was too intimate for an expansive character such as Handel’s, the flute sonatas in Opus 1 are quintessentially “operatic” in nature, expressing the full range of affects between the delicate and the dramatic. On this recording, Belgian traverso champion Jan de Winne teams up with Italian virtuosi Lorenzo Ghielmi and Marco Testori to explore the “Italian” dimension in the flute sonatas, and to revitalize these astounding works with thrilling musicianship and superbly alert interaction.

Emanon Ensemble Tarquinia

The four composers on this CD avail themselves of an accessible musical language, which is meant to immediately appeal to the listener. Peter Welffens’s impressionist piece is a dance suite of straightforward, clear lyricism written for the choreographer Aimé de Lignière. Anton van Wilderode’s vivid poems, rich in imagery, provide Fritz Celis with a treasure trove of materials for a highly refined, atmospheric, and colorful composition. Alain Craens depicts three moments of a summer day: the leisurely awakening in the morning, the dynamism and playfulness of noon, and the quiet of evening. His starting point is a children’s song, which appears in all three parts in various guises. Joseph Jongen’s work on this CD is one of his very best. The rich and subtle colors of this exhilarating music betray the influence of impressionism as well as the hand of the master organist.

Important Records Jozef Van Wissem: baroque lute The Day Is Coming • Amor Fati (Love Is A Religion) • Son Of Dawn • After The Fire Has Devoured All It Will Consume Itself • Ex Nex • Our Hearts Condemn Us The title Ex Patris (“from the fathers”) plays on the idiomatic baroque lute compositions presented here, which emulate the classical repertoire. The four compositions on Ex Patris form a circular narrative of interlocking repetitive melodic series, kicking off with the pro-apocalyptic track “The Day Is Coming.” “Amor Fati” channels a deep interest in both love for religion and religious belief in love. “Son of Dawn” consists of mirrored lute harmonics that serve as an intro to the 13-minute elegiac “After The Fire Has Devoured All It Will Consume Itself.” The piece builds and releases tension, with layer upon layer of ecstatic melody. At the end, even the work itself gets devoured but it remains eternal, with no potential beginning and without end.

Chopin’s influence on the development of music in the 19th century was immense—employing a unique harmonic language enriched by chromaticism, he was the first composer to break away from the diatonic tonalism of the Viennese Classical masters. His immaculate style and effortless virtuosity paved the way for the piano to become the Romantic era’s predominant means of musical expression. A new school of cantabile playing emerged through his example, changing the way future generations of pianists would approach the instrument.

Mostly published during the 1830s and 1840s, two sets (Op. 85 and 102) appeared after the composer’s death, in 1850 and 1868 respectively. These works were seen as both fulfilling and disregarding the diverse musical and aesthetic demands of the age. Sympathetic critics approached the Songs Without Words as “characteristic” or “poetic” music capable of transporting the listener to another realm and, as such, providing a welcome departure from the musically and emotionally vacuous products of modern virtuosity.

Wellesz’s operas of the 1920s contain a significant amount of virtuoso choral writing, and this quality carries over into his church music, although on the whole they are written in a simpler, more traditionally tonal idiom.

Certain works of the prolific but short-lived Szymanowski, particularly his two violin concertos and the concert pieces for violin and piano, maintain their popularity internationally—but that leaves so much still to be discovered. And the name of Simon Laks is only just beginning to emerge from oblivion. His cello sonata here receives its first recording.

Even though it was the focus of one of the most written-about events in 20th century American music history, it was not to be heard again for 62 years, until American conductor and musicologist Maurice Peress searched out the original score and restaged the 1927 concert in the very same Carnegie Hall on July 12, 1989. This world premiere recording now makes it possible to hear the original, which contained Antheil’s most advanced ideas: futurist, machine-age, ragtime-inspired music of a complexity beyond human playing capabilities and a conception beyond most music composed in 1925.

Portuguese-born Sequeira Costa has had a long and distinguished career, giving his first recital at the age of seven in 1936. By the age of 16, he completed his official studies and gave a recital programming Chopin’s 24 Etudes and Four Ballades. Costa was a pupil of Vianna de Motta (one of the last pupils of Liszt), and later in London with Mark Hamburg, in Paris with Jacques Fevrier & Marguerite Long, and in Lucerne with the great Edwin Fischer. REBAY: Grosses Duo für Gitarre und Quint-Bassgitarre • 4 Variationen über Schuberts Wiegenlied • Sonata in A minor for Guitar Solo • Guitar Sonata in D minor

On this new recording from Stradivarius, dedicated to Antonio Vivaldi’s Concertos Op. 10, Stefano Bagliano plays recorder and conducts the Collegium Pro Musica, an ensemble specializing in 17th and 18th century repertoire performed in accordance with the style of that age and using true copies of original instruments.

This recording attempts to repair a deep historical injustice: Ferdinand Rebay, although popular as a choir director and a composer of vocal music, is quite unknown for his guitar compositions. This new CD marks an end to a half-century of oblivion and announces a latecomer among the great 20th-century guitar composers.

He also read and re-read his favorite poets—Baudelaire, Verlaine, and Rimbaud—of which he owned several first editions. During the months spent in the muddy trenches of WWI, he often sought consolation from their works, which had been sent by his mother to the battlefront. In this way, he was able to while away the long hours of waiting, moral loneliness, and physical suffering. This third volume in a series from Ensemble Calliopée opens the doors to a more poetic Durosoir, in a language that engenders a sweet and romantic daydream.

In Madrid, he became “Domingo Escarlatti” and lived as a music teacher to Queen Maria-Barbara. He wrote almost 555 sonatas, in which he created an explosion of wide-ranging sounds from Italy and Spain. As he was able to utilize the technical possibilities of the harpsichord to the fullest, he produced the mournful notes of the hunting horns as well as the passionate chords played on a flamenco guitar. This program also presents the “Fandango” of his disciple, Padre Antonio Soler, a sort of virtuoso dance on an ostinato. The harpsichord played on this disc is an Italian model, conceived by Philippe Humeau, with a warm sound that is ideal for this repertoire.

Joaquín Turina (1882–1949) was one of the most important Spanish composers of the first half of the 20th century, whose hometown of Sevilla shaped both his personality and his oeuvre. The Wilten Boys’ Choir, conducted by Johannes Stecher, perform the work in the version for choir, soloists, pianos, and percussion, which further emphasizes the work’s frequently percussive character.

They interpret them on instruments that Mozart himself preferred: Irnberger plays a violin by Jakob Stainer, while Badura-Skoda plays one of the few preserved original Anton Walter fortepianos.
