“Chatham was the initial music curator of Lower Manhattan’s The Kitchen during the 1970s … His new record evokes many performers he booked at The Kitchen—Laurie Spiegel, Tony Conrad, La Monte Young—yet retains its own character in the longer run. A neat trick, this, the better for being achieved with deceptively casual grace.”

Overview

Following up on the success of the most recent album Pins and Needles, The Birthday Massacre returns with Imaginary Monsters, a new EP consisting of three all-new songs and five remixes. The three new songs—“Forever,” “Burn Away,” and “Left Behind”—find the band at its creative apex. Dark, personal, and atmospheric, The Birthday Massacre builds its compelling blend of gothic, rock, and electronic music into a totally unique sound. To give the fans another perspective, The Birthday Massacre had five colleagues offer distinctive perspectives on tracks from Pins and Needles: SKOLD, Combichrist, tweaker, Assemblage 23, and Kevvy Mental & Dave Ogilvie add their own spin to TBM’s distinctive style.

Dance Or Die

Nostradamnation (Limited Edition) Selling Points

• Legends of the dark electro scene, with club hits “Psychoburbia” and “Dance Or Die” still in rotation. • Limited edition two-disc release. • Features remixes by Solitary Experiments and Miss Construction. • Facebook ad campaign to coincide with release. • Street teams will distribute promotional materials in select markets. • Full servicing to press, radio, and club DJs. • RIYL: And One, X Marks The Pedwalk, Syntec.

Overview

Berlin-based dark electro legend Dance Or Die returns! On Nostradamnation, members Wagner and A.N.G.O. (joined by Chris L. from Agonoize live) combine dark atmospheres with massive beats, deep vocals, aggression, and melody in their unique way. The group’s sinister, dance-floor-compatible visions of impending apocalypse stand out from the faceless crowd of bland carbon copies that make up the electro scene. Nostradamnation marks the impressive return of a band that, in the ’90s, provided a link between the gothic and electro scenes like no other, and whose unique fusion of styles left a distinct imprint on the club music of the time. Even now, two decades after the group’s debut, Dance Or Die’s sound is fresh, original, and unmatched.

After studies at the Lyon Conservatory and IRCAM, Pierre Jodlowski founded the collective éOle and the Novelum Festival in Toulouse. His activities as a composer have taken him to many venues in France and elsewhere, for new music as well dance, theater, the plastic arts, and electronic music. His work is spread over a number of domains, and beyond his musical universe Jodlowski works with images, interactive programming, and staging. He asserts the practice of a music that is “active” in both its physical dimension (gestures, energies, spaces) and its psychological dimension (evocation, memory, cinematographic aspect).

Japan’s drum(s) and bass duo Ruins is renowned around the globe for its mind-bendingly fast and complex hyper-progressive rock onslaught. Hardcore, psych, speed metal, art rock, funk—all are incorporated into the music, but what comes out is irrefutably original. On 1986–1992, we unearth the band’s earliest material, much of which is long out of print and never heard by Western audiences. Ruins founder Yoshida Tatsuya has extensively remixed and remastered 23 songs from the band’s first seven years, including their debut 7”, the cut from the NGII compilation, tracks from the first 12” EP, selections from their debut LP, and remixed “best of” tracks from the Stonehenge and Burning Stone LPs.

With releases on DNT, Gilgongo, and SKiN GRAFT, Gay Beast has garnered a reputation for uniqueness on the rock fringe, their sound being both too weird for the stereotype of a “gay band” and “too gay” for the noise-rock set. Upon examination of the influence blender, one finds remnants of Devo, Captain Beefheart, equatorial pop-rock from the ’60s and ’70s, No-Wave, and feminist theory. This concoction, delivered via Gay Beast’s unique political approach to composition, is explored heavily on their third album To Smithereens.

Recorded with Mark Michalik at Drasik Studios (The Swellers, Much The Same), this album contains 13 driving tracks for every walk of life. The sound is a poignantly topical, no-holds-barred, fast-paced punk rock with just enough artificial sweeteners to appease the ladies—as if melody, discord, and anger met in a cage match and ended in a tie. “Now that the original Fantastic Four have buckled, only these real-life comic punk superheroes remain intact—Peelanders Red, Yellow, Green, and Pink. Japanese New Yorkers, the PZ prog-pop monkeys found their calling on last year’s children’s CD P-TV-Z, for Austin indie Chicken Ranch Records.” — Austin Chronicle “Standing on the sidelines is not an option when Peelander-Z hits the stage.” — Time Out “As the diverse crowds in each performance can testify, Peelander-Z is more than just punk rock for anime nerds … Anyone with a lust for creative ridiculousness and hilarious absurdity will enjoy Peelander-Z, who have brought an interesting Japanese/American/superhero hybrid to eager audiences, forged their niche putting a totally unique spin on punk rock, and probably gotten laid more than once in the process.” — PunkNews.org “Panda punk RAWK, samurai action stars who could kick the Power Rangers’ asses any day of the year … they put on the most unbelievably fun shows (as anyone at this year’s SXSW could have told you).” — Razorcake

Paul Motian

The Windmills Of Your Mind Selling Points

• Vocals by Petra Haden (That Dog, The Decemberists), who has contributed to recordings by Beck, Mike Watt, Luscious Jackson, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, and many more. • One of the leading guitarists in jazz, Bill Frisell has recorded with Jan Garbarek, Kermit Driscoll, Joey Baron, and more. He provided music for the TV version of friend Gary Larson’s popular comic The Far Side. • Paul Motian, who came to prominence with the pioneering trio of pianist Bill Evans, is one of the most influential modern drummers. He has played with, among others, Thelonious Monk, Chris Cheek, Tony Malaby, Lee Konitz, Joshua Redman, and Brad Shepik.

Overview

In March 2011, Paul Motian celebrated his 80th birthday. On this celebratory album, Motian presents Broadway hits like “I Loves You Porgy” alongside original compositions. The artistic collaboration with Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan is a great musical gift for all lovers of Motian’s music, and the lovely vocals of Petra Haden, Charlie Haden’s daughter, complete this new quartet. This is a special musical event not just because Motion presents this quartet for the very first time, but also because producer Stefan Winter worked completely without any digital equipment or sound effects. The album is an extraordinary live-to-analog two-track production, wherein the unique momentum of the performance is the focus. The original analog tape is the one and only master.

PRESS QUOTES

“[Petra Haden is] a daydreaming geek girl who sings like an angel.” — Pitchfork

“Petra Haden’s vocals, alone or with some judiciously deployed overdubbed harmonizing, move with a fluidity that is perfectly mirrored in Bill Frisell’s guitar phrasing and sonorities.” — Amazon Editorial Review “Among jazz guitarists, Frisell is unique in his exploitation of variable timbre … and although his work is steeped in jazz, Frisell is a man of catholic tastes. His music includes characteristics of rock, country, and bluegrass, among various other styles.” — All Music Guide

Synastry is a collaboration between groundbreaking vocalist Jen Shyu and master bassist Mark Dresser that demonstrates new possibilities for jazz singing. Shyu, a member of influential saxophonist Steve Coleman’s Five Elements, is well known for her tonally exacting and rhythmically incisive singing. On Synastry, accompanied only by Dresser’s acoustic bass, her voice is thrown into stark relief, giving full evidence to her complete control of microtonal shadings, deep sense of rhythm, and highly developed ear for lyrical and melodic improvisation. In addition to English and Chinese, she sings in a wholly improvised vocalese that utilizes phonemes derived from her mastery of seven different languages learned through her studies of indigenous music in Indonesia, East Timor, Taiwan, Brazil, and Cuba. Dresser, who is well known for using extended technique to tap the full sonic potential of the acoustic bass, envelops Shyu’s voice in an aura of intimate mystery.

Press Quotes

“Shyu’s ability to hear dissonance, melody, and every inch of her own compositions allowed her to take on the role of both storyteller and instrumentalist, through her voice.” — All About Jazz “The key member of the line-up is arguably vocalist Jen Shyu. She has a unique tone, one that is both masculine and feminine, sliding between contralto and soprano, to bring as much ardour as grace to arrangements.” — BBC

Since their previous EP, Five Gallant Steeds, Dead Black Hearts has played live shows with the likes of Heartless Bastards, Electric Six, and Civil Twilight—all the while refining their use of multiple harmonic vocal lines and musical counterpoint to make The Southern Front catchy and instantly engaging, with subtleties that reveal themselves after each listen. Born out of the ashes of Philadelphia’s fledging 1970s punk rock scene, Bunnydrums shared the stage with such artists as R.E.M, Bauhaus, Tuxedomoon, Gang of Four, The Cult, Pylon, and many more before disbanding in 1986. The band took punk, new wave, and psychedelic rock to a new level—their sound was fresh, untapped, and highly unique. Metropolis Records is proud to present PKD, a reissue of Bunnydrums’ first record. Reminiscent of Joy Division and Killing Joke, Bunnydrums helped set the standard for today’s alternative artists.

Overview

Important Records is proud to release the fourth album, and second for the label, from Nathan Amundson’s Rivulets. With a beautifully authentic emotional depth, Nathan’s voice is his most compelling instrument, a tool for delivering pure emotion from his heart. Representing five years of work and nearly constant touring, this album reflects the intense nature of Rivulets as a three-piece. If you haven’t seen them on tour, this album will come as a revelation—recorded, appropriately, at the Sacred Heart Music Center, a cathedral built in the late 19th century.

The only modern title in this batch, this is hands down the best record I’ve heard front to back in years. The lush falsetto harmonies start with the opening track “I See Two Eyes,” followed by the Beach Boys-esque (I don’t use that lightly) harmonies on the next track “Lazy Minds Die.” The instrumentation is dense but crystalline. The production is astounding. Whenever I’ve played this record for people, it immediately takes over one’s attention. Please play this in store.

A band I followed in the early ’90s after a high school friend released 1994’s Flying suit. That same label just reissued Flying suit and did a retrospective, Finest specimens, that featured a couple of songs from this record. You’re Not a Dream was overlooked the first time around, but the band is recording more music these days and this is a fine time to revisit this release—much less quirky than previous efforts, but with the same ornate instrumentation and vocals.
