This collaboration between Brazilian artists Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho is a wonderfully off-kilter record full of fantastic hooky and strange tunes that range from full-on freakouts to quiet pastoral numbers. Paebiru offers an atmospheric blend of both artists’ sensibilities; sung and chanted vocals are no more or less important than any of the other elements, which include classical acoustic and fuzzy electric guitar, piano, organ, flute, sax, and a range of percussion. In Brazil, from the late 1960’s onward, Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, Tom Ze, and many others blended elements of psychedelic rock, jazz and indigenous folk with more “classical” instrumentation and urban styles such as bossa nova and samba. As much a political identity movement as a cultural one, Tropicalia artists as a whole were interested in using artistic expression to remove barriers, and as a means of enabling other societal freedoms.

Another super-rare gem, brought to you by Mr Bongo from the legendary Rozenblit catalog, The Gentleman is the holy grail of Brazilian psych. Formed by Hugo Leao in 1966, The Gentlemen was a garage rock band from Pernambuco that came together via inspirations from the “Jovem Guarda” movement and the ’60s psych-rock sound from the UK. “Sorriso Selvagem” is the first track on the groundbreaking self-titled album from 1972, sounding like a mixture of Santana and Deep Purple. The single “Christina,” featuring the great Zé Ramalho, will be reissued later in 2012.

Os Canibais had a meteoric rise to fame starting in 1964 in Rio de Janeiro. The group was originally made up of Aramis (guitar/vocals), Serginho, and Max (vocals) and later brought in the wonderful Denise Baker (vocals) and Horacio (piano). Originally the group was to be called “The Drunks” but after careful consideration they chose the much catchier Os Canibais (“The Cannibals”). Signed by Jonas Silva, who headed up A&R at Mocambo, the band’s first single sold over 100k copies and made it into the Top 10. The result of a 1964 jam session organized by Astor Silva and Wilson das Neves, this record was originally released in 1975 on the Brazilian label Discos CBS. Neves is a key figure in the history of Brazilian music, having played drums with practically every great musician of his generation. The idea behind the record was to break the traditional bossa trio mold, creating a harder-edged jazz and bossa sound that allowed for more soloing and improvisation, and the result is a stone-cold classic essential for all Brazilian music fans.

With debut album Entropy, King of Spain was Matt Slate, a one-man band armed with a guitar and a laptop.
