Born Salomon Amzellag in 1922 in Safi, a town along the Atlantic coast, Samy grew up in Rabat, Morocco’s capital city.

In the 1950s–60s, he sang standards as well as his own songs, reflecting on society and the damages caused by colonialism.

Samy El Magribi passed away in 2008, leaving behind a splendid repertoire whose flavor is rendered on this album.

This album presents a repertoire of songs and melodies passed on by elder singers in Central Brittany—songs to dance to, walk to, or just listen to. These songs, which were sung at rural gatherings linked to farm work, market fairs, and religious pardons, have been revisited with respect and buoyancy by two outstanding singers: Yann-Fañch Kemener and Eric Menneteau .

Within a decade he would be the most famous Indian musician on the planet. His association and experimentation with western music artists like The Beatles and Yehudi Menuhin did much to expose the world to raga, the classical music of India. For Ravi Shankar music is a spiritual discipline on the path to self-realization. By this process individual consciousness can be elevated to a realm of awareness where the revelation of the true meaning of the universe—its eternal and unchanging essence—can be joyfully experienced. Ragas are the vehicles by which this essence can be perceived. In this concert, Ravi Shankar performs a beloved evening raga, “Raga Bihag,” named after the province from whence the piece is said to have originated.
