“The solo Pianto della Madonna ‘Iam moriar, mi fili,’ sung by soprano Grace Davidson … is something of a showstopper, exquisitely beautiful. And so it goes through over 76 minutes of music. The singing is creative, dramatic, perfectly attuned to the needs of each selection, and precisely executed without sounding academic or stuffy.” — Classical Candor

A major re-evaluation from a towering pianist is under way.” — The Sunday Herald “Peter Donohoe ensures that the slicing, acidulous felicity of Prokofiev’s writing is purely invigorating.” — Sunday Times Recording the Prokofiev Sonatas is an important landmark for Peter Donohoe, who first came to international recognition in Moscow in 1982, when he won second prize at the 7th Tchaikovsky International Competition. He was asked by the publishers Boosey & Hawkes to prepare the definitive edition of the scores for them in 1985, and he also recorded Sonatas 6, 7 & 8 for EMI in 1990. In fact you have little choice: buy it, please.” — Musicweb-International (review for SOMM 87) Jacques Ibert (1890–1962) is a significant French composer whose success began early, when he worn the Prix de Rome. He became sought after for his essentially Galli style, lightness of touch, and genuine melodic gift. His String Quartet — hardly ever recorded — is a major work of great power. The Souvenir for quartet and double bass is a premiere recording, specially sent to the Bridge Quartet by publishers Alphonse Leduc.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 6, Op. 74 “Pathétique” • SCHUMANN: Overture to Manfred, Op. 115

The Wihan Quartet, formed in 1985, is heir to the great Czech musical tradition. The quartet’s outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech heritage, and of the many classical, romantic, and modern masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire, is widely acknowledged.

In February 1893, after an intense but hugely successful tour in the Russian city of Odessa, Tchaikovsky embarked on the composition of his Sixth Symphony. It is one of his greatest achievements, marrying a sweeping structure with exquisite emotional depth.

It is difficult to surprise a modern music lover with an unknown recording of this opera, one of the greatest masterpieces of Tchaikovsky’s catalogue. Nevertheless, the Melodiya vaults have preserved a remarkable 40-year-old recording. The lead parts were performed by the up-and-coming stars of the 1970s USSR Bolshoi Theatre: Zurab Anjaparidze, Tamara Milashkina, Valentina Levko, and Yuri Mazurok. Although all these performers are now known throughout the world, this particular interpretation was a recording debut for many of them. The recording also features vocalists who were already established masters: Irina Arkhipova, Vera Firsova, Mikhail Kiselyov, and Viktor Nechipailo. The Bolshoi Orchestra and Choir are conducted by prominent maestro Boris Khaikin.

His works in other genres may not be as popular, but as a symphonist Rachmaninov ranks as one of the greatest Russian composers. His initial works, such as “The Rock” and “Caprice bohémien,” were composed in the early 1890s soon after his graduation from the Moscow Conservatory, while Symphony No. 3 and Symphonic Dances concluded his last, American period. Rachmaninov’s contribution to vocal and choral music, both sacred and secular, is as essential. His three cantatas, composed in different years, reflect the composer’s creative evolution: the rejuvenating “Spring,” the gloomy “The Bells,” and the nostalgic “Three Russian Songs.” On this CD Rachmaninov’s symphonic works and cantatas are performed by the USSR State Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov, one of the best interpreters of the composer’s music, and by the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society led by Dmitri Kitayenko.

Editions Hortus Jean-Baptiste Dupont: organ REGER: Fantasy and Fugue in C minor, Op. 29 • Zwölf Stücke, Op. 59 “Jean-Baptiste Dupont is one of today’s rare organists who can maintain his inspiration right to the end.” — Diapason (review for Vol. 1) “A complete rendition with an original, proper tone which may well figure amongst the greatest.” — Classica (review for Vol. 1) Max Reger is one of the major composers of the German organ school. He is greatly appreciated by Anglo-Saxon organists, but his music has been long looked down on by French organists. Now, Jean-Baptiste Dupont gives us a taste of Reger’s music with this second volume of the composer’s complete organ works. The goals of the project are twofold: on the one hand, to fill a certain discographic insufficiency; on the other hand, to attract the attention of organists and music lovers to this music by the originality of the undertaking.

This is why, in 1987, he decided to destroy all of his earlier compositions! This new recording features the composer’s Eighth Symphony, a panoramic work with infinite landscapes. In the third movement a bagpipe rings out to the tune of “Amazing Grace,” played beautifully by soloist François Marchal. It often exhibits characteristics of impressionism, minimalism, or jazz. Sometimes it suggests certain tones or tonal centers, but above all it wants to be accessible. After the era of complex modernism, in which experiment occupied a central place, Craens believes that returning to a normal relationship with the audience is essential. Music may again be “just beautiful,” without ulterior motives. In this way, the composer strives to build bridges between his own individual expression, and his audience.

On April 9, 1924, the French composer Jean Wiener organized a concert at the Salle des Enseignants, which included the world premiere of Villa-Lobos’ Trio for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Also influenced by Stravinsky, the work of Jean Françaix was celebrated for its refinement, elegance, and humor. His Divertissement for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon was composed in 1947 for the Trio André Dupont. The third composer presented on this CD, André Mehmari, is characterized by the ease with which he moves in the fields of both popular and concert music.

A collection of music that demonstrates the sonority of the instruments designed by Leonardo da Vinci

Íñigo López de Mendoza, Marquis of Santillana, was born in 1388 and was considered to be the first poet of the 15th century. This recording includes the Marquis’ 10 serranillas, plus one of his numerous songs and a villancico-serranilla song dedicated to his daughters.

Serranillas del Marques de Santillana (1388–1458)

This beautiful selection of music features instruments specially reconstructed for the occasion: the hand organ, lyra da braccio, and viola organista. The repertoire concentrates on music that is contemporary to this universal genius, and to accompany these unique instruments, a small renaissance chamber orchestra was created.

This CD contains six sonatas for keyboard (from the convent of Encarnación de Osuna) and six pastorelas for pianoforte (from manuscript 2998 of the Montserrat Abbey), performed by Sevilian pianist Pedro Piquero. Blasco de Nebra’s music brings to mind sensations such as tenderness, sweetness, fantasy, and languor. In the adagios of the Pastorelas, these qualities are so pronounced that they become almost painful, like the pain of a poignant hesitation unexpectedly reaching dissonance, or of the sensual delight kindled by the solitary, naked sound of a single note after all the others have faded.

The disc also includes Manen’s Fantasia Sonata, in which Wagnerian resonances merge with Mediterranean brightness, and a series of pieces by Felip Pedrell’s nephew Carlos, which provide a good example of the late Romanticism that particularly suited the tastes of guitarists, and a significant portion of the audiences, in the first half of the century.

The pieces are often found in his concert program, and here for the first time ever we have a complete recording of the composer’s collected piano works! Rune Alver made his debut as pianist at the age of 20. He was born in Bergen and educated at Bergen Music Conservatory and the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he received his diploma in 1986. Also on this CD is an adaptation of Dvoˇrák’s famous American string quartet for woodwinds, recorded by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Wind Quintet. A modern and stylistically flexible symphony orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic demonstrates an artistic flair that allows for a variety of styles, from classical to contemporary, in a historically authentic manner. Chief Conductor Edo de Waart is responsible for the orchestra’s main repertoire. After his piano studies at the Brussels Conservatory, his interest and urge for authenticity pushed him in the direction of historical instruments. His pioneering recording of the sonatas of C.M. von Weber at the beginning of the nineties marked the start of a flourishing career as a fortepiano artist. In that same period he founded the Florestan Fortepiano Trio. This ensemble (later renamed Tröndlin Trio) was one of the first to perform the classical romantic repertoire on authentic instruments. When France Springuel won the fourth prize of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, she took her place among the greatest cello soloists in the international concert world. She also was prizewinner at the TIJI Competition in Bratislava, and received the “Prix du jeune soliste” in Montréal. In 1983 Springuel was proclaimed “Soloist of the Year” in Canada, Switzerland, France, and Belgium, and in 1986 she was the “Festival Star” at the Flanders Festival. She has been performing with Jan Vermeulen since 2010.

Fortunatov However rewardingly Dmitri Shostakovich endowed pianists with chamber music, Russian violinists felt somewhat neglected by their giant with his only late Sonata, Op. 134 of 1968. So, it seemed obvious to compose arrangements of works for violin and piano. Some of these have established themselves in concert life, but others, although of no lesser quality, have remained largely unknown. David Frühwirth started his training at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Paul Roczek, Jürgen Geise, and Rugiero Ricci. He continued his studies in Lübeck with renowned pedagogue Zakhar Bron, where he graduated at 20 years old before Pinchas Zukerman invited him to New York to work on additional postgraduate diplomas. His partner on this disc, Ukrainian pianist Milana Chernyavska, has established herself as one of the leading pianists of our time. In December 2007 Marie Vermeulin won a magnificent Second Prize at the Olivier Messiaen Competition, following her brilliant studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon and further studies with Lazar Berman. However, this was only the first step in her journey to explore all of the challenges of Messiaen’s work, in which Roger Muraro, the preeminent proponent of Messiaen’s works, has encouraged her.

Vie de Famille presents a series of snapshots in sound, inspired by behavior that seems familiar and at first sight, harmless. But suddenly, there are moments of madness; virtuoso explosions of a sort. The composer unrolls his story like a string of beads; thanks to his complete control of the trajectory, he leads us as though hypnotized into the hidden recesses of this composite and paradoxical work.

When Joseph Haydn arrived in London on January 2, 1791 at the age of 58, it was as a composer at the height of his powers who had already left an indelible mark on the piano sonata, string quartet, and symphonic genres. Once liberated by the death of his employer Prince Esterházy, he left for England almost immediately. He knew his stay could bring him international fame, and to achieve this he wrote with incredible frenzy, producing his final masterpieces in genres to which he would not return: symphonies, trios with piano, and the three London sonatas played here. Mathieu Dupouy plays an original fortepiano by Jakob Weimes (Prague, 1807).

Jean Françaix (1912–1997) stands out in the genre of 20th-century French composition. A gifted musician, composer, and pianist, he had the great fortune to develop his musical talents, from an early age, in a family of musicians. His education developed, as well as contacts with authoritative exponents of French culture, through leading figures of musical art: Nadia Boulanger for composition and Isidore Philipp for piano.

This disc presents an exploration of both C.P.E. Bach’s world of expression and a neglected instrument, the tangent piano. Carl Philipp Emanuel’s music was much pored-over by Haydn and much admired by Beethoven; it also profoundly influenced countless other composers and this program shows just how deeply his influence ran. The recording also offers an opportunity to hear the tangent piano, an instrument that was very popular in Germany at the time but has since fallen out of favor.
