Zookeeper

Pink Chalk

Selling Points

• From the legendary frontman of Mineral and The Gloria Record. • Mineral reunion tour begins shortly after release! • Will be promoted at sold-out shows countrywide. • RIYL: Mineral, The Gloria Record.

Media & Marketing • • • •

Press and PR handled by Beartrap PR. Reviews in key media, from Pitchfork to NPR. Album premiere hosted at popular websites. Mass media e-mail to thousands of followers.

Zookeeper’s triumphant return shouldn’t be overshadowed by the reunion of ringleader Chris Simpson’s legendary project Mineral, a band that played a pivotal role in bringing emo into the mainstream in the nineties. The two are very different animals, and while Mineral may bask in the warm wave of nostalgia, Zookeeper is still Simpson’s most evocative and mature vehicle. On their latest effort, Pink Chalk, Simpson’s voice guides us through an orchestra of soft landscapes painted by piano, guitar, lap steel, horns, and percussion that will likely garner comparisons to Neutral Milk Hotel, Belle & Sebastian, and Wilco. A can’t-miss! “A bit of an emo legend.”

The inter-generational partnership of alto saxophonist Darius Jones and pianist Matthew Shipp seamlessly meshes the talents of two of the most restlessly inventive and deeply gifted instrumentalistcomposer-improviser-leaders working today. This singular duo project was first revealed in 2011 on the 13-part song cycle Cosmic Lieder, widely hailed as a wholly original and deeply compelling work of great emotional and intellectual heft, and seemingly arriving from the future. Since then, Jones and Shipp have continued to develop and broaden their exclusive language live in performance. The Darkseid Recital is their brand-new album of cosmic lieder, triple distilled from NYC engagements at Jazz Standard and The Stone. It is yet another unimpeachably potent work, devoid of cliché. The approaches here range widely, from entrancingly lyrical and gentle ear candy to liquid flows of notes designed to caress to a shredding intensity that can potentially be quite frightening. All of them are rendered with laser-sharp focus with intent toward catharsis, resulting in a whole that is both warmly accessible and uncompromisingly inventive.

“A form of pure expression that transcends notions of genre or style.”

“Wonderfully dense with information and ideas.”

When they work together as FBN, it is as a complete musical collective; every communion is an auspicious and deeply rewarding event. They are without question one of the finest improvising units in the world today. Love and Ghosts is their long-awaited third release, following 2011’s Out of This World’s Distortions, and was recorded during their inaugural tour of Europe that same year. • Debut album from rising comic Nate Fridson. • Recorded live at the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase in Ann Arbor, MI. • RIYL: The Sklar Brothers, Nate Bargatze.

Detroit-born, Brooklyn-based comedian Nate Fridson has been called “smart,” “original,” and “better than I expected” by both peers and audiences alike. A “talented writer with an ear for sarcasm,” and “a man who’s willing to use other people’s quotes in his bio.” The material on this debut album is edgy, yet clean, and also sometimes it isn’t those things. Best Guy So Far confronts relationships, music, dating, family, sports, and anything else Nate finds even remotely interesting — he’s easily distracted. He can be seen regularly at the show he hosts Sunday nights at Beauty Bar in Manhattan.

Since the late ’80s, the enigmatic Jouni Havukainen has been responsible for some of the brashest and most intense releases of the post-industrial genre. This new CD can be seen as a prequel of things to come, with three brand-new tracks in which we see ISN delve into more obscure ambient territories. Alongside these new pieces, the CD features reworked, remixed, and upgraded material used during live performances, giving new life and direction to some well-known passages and lesser-known tracks with ISN’s trademark bombastic sound and vocals. A brand new album is scheduled for release in late 2014, and this CD serves as the perfect appetizer while we wait for the main course.

The members of Better Off are no strangers to the Nashville alt-rock scene, having played in various other projects in the area, but this new incarnation undoubtedly sees this group of musicians at their peak… or on their way to it. The album they’ve created in (I Think) I’m Leaving feels remarkably mature and developed for a debut release, sure to excite fans of a wide range of tastes. Comparisons to the likes of Jimmy Eat World, Brand New, and Knapsack seem fitting, yet Better Off provide enough of their own take on the sound to create a unique brand of emotional rock. These are stirring, well-crafted songs that reveal themselves more and more with each subsequent listen.

After delivering their first 7” EP Spite to satiate the hunger of the hardcore masses, the first Sheer Terror full-length in 18 years is about to drop on our heads like a bag of cinder blocks. Recorded in early 2014 by Dean Baltulonis at Thump Studios in Brooklyn, Standing Up For Falling Down pulls no punches. “I am so fucking proud of my band!” says Paul. “There was never a NYHC/punk record that ever sounded like this … hard as fucking nails!” In the longstanding tradition of Sheer Terror, this record is everything you know and love, and then some. Paul Bearer delivers one of his greatest vocal performances to date, and the band is harder and tighter than ever. From the brutal pummeling of “Heartburn in G” to the melodic melancholy of “Sandbox Tonka,” there’s plenty of gritty, dirty, hard-driving punk here.

Call forth Rory Kelly’s name on Pandora Radio, and you’ll find him mixed into the company of artists ranging from ZZ Top to Motörhead. Blame it on the heady highs in the air that permeates the Black Mountains of North Carolina, but the state has produced an artist that is bringing new dimension to the tour de force that is America’s beloved Southern Rock. A player in league with prodigies, Kelly is a self-taught musician who picked up the guitar as a boy and cut his chops in the rural town of Marion. While his mother slung drinks behind the bar, Rory strummed alongside his father, drummer Mike Kelly, in a family-dominated house band in a local music dive.

The Eye of Time is the solo project of French musician Marc Euvrie. His musical development is deeply connected with the French DIY punk and hardcore scene, though he has been classically trained as well. He used to play in several bands before he began to translate his personal reflection of our complex world into music, which initiated The Eye of Time. Where the previous record disclosed the coldness of our time, destructing everything that is meant to be our deep nature and presenting the despair of our situation, Acoustic embarks on a little glimpse of hope, finding some strength to keep fighting for the nature of things and their vital qualities. Best known as half of post-classical/electronica duo Piano Interrupted, London-based French producer Franz Kirmann goes back to his electronic roots with Meridians, his second album. Strongly influenced by movies (he cites filmmakers Wong Kar Wai, Michelangelo Antonioni, Sergio Leone, and David Lynch among his musical influences), Kirmann has a weakness for walls of sounds and fragile melodies, which to him are the sonic equivalent of slow-motion sequences, travelling shots or landscapes in cinemascope.

Refining John Lemke’s blend of prepared piano and field recordings with hand-crafted beats and swampy bass lines, this deeply moody and danceable release bends genres with refreshing ease. Working across a variety of media, Lemke explores all things sonic through live performance, sound design, and his work as a documentary film composer. The Walizka EP is his latest solo release on Denovali Records.
