“A gentle recording, this disc is as much a showcase for the plucking skills of Lonardi, Mela, and Micheli as it is for the precise voice of Renata Fusco. The most substantial pieces are the two continuo cantatas, affectingly and effectively performed; their subtle charms are fully realized by the ensemble, whose delicate accompaniment allows Scarlatti’s meticulous word-painting and fluent melody to glow.” — Early Music Review

Linus Roth: violin Julius Berger: cello Lar Wouters van den Oudenweijer: clarinet Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic James MacMillan: conductor MACMILLAN: From Ayrshire • Tuireadh • Kiss on wood • …as others see us… The third volume of James MacMillan’s recordings with the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic on Challenge Classics is devoted to works for chamber orchestra with soloists. James MacMillan is one of today’s most successful living composers, and is also internationally active as a conductor. His musical language is flooded with influences from his Scottish heritage, Catholic faith, social conscience, and close connection with Celtic folk music, all blended with influences from Far Eastern, Scandinavian, and Eastern European music. Since he won the Echo Klassik Award for his EMI debut in 2006, Linus Roth has made a name for himself as one of the most interesting violinists of his generation, and as a champion of wrongly forgotten works. Cellist Julius Berger has been a permanent fixture of the music scene for more than 30 years, in worldwide demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Dutch clarinetist Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer studied at the Juilliard School for Music in New York with clarinetist Charles Neidich. He has played in major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Musik Verein, and more.

Michèle Gurdal was only nine old when she played the solo in Joseph Haydn’s Piano Concerto in G major with the Belgian Chamber Orchestra, live on Belgian television. By the age of 17 she had already completed her studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in piano, chamber music, and music history with the Diplom de Premier Prix. She studied in the master class of Homero Francesch in Zurich, and with Professor Anatol Ugorski at the University of Music in Detmold.

KAIROS Agata Zubel: voice Klangforum Wien Clement Power: conductor ZUBEL: Labyrinth • Aphorisms on Milosz • Shades of Ice • NOT I The figure of the composer-performer is rarer today than it was in the past, and that of the composer-vocalist rarer still. The Polish composer and singer Agata Zubel (b. 1978) is one such rarity. Her special talents were recognized when she received the top award at the 60th UNESCO International Composers’ Rostrum in May 2013 for NOT I (2010). Zubel’s experience as a performer has undoubtedly had a bearing on her understanding of vocal production, and of the relationship between voice and ensemble. Doyle’s idea for each is to compose a live soundtrack for an imaginary film, with playback of pre-recorded acted scenes coming through loudspeakers together with live musicians, lit only by their music stands. In this way audience members are given the impression that they are present at the screening of a film — but one they cannot see, only hear. The first performance took place in February 2008 at the National Concert-Hall, Dublin, with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gavin Maloney.

Psophos Quartet DOHNÁNYI: String Quartet No. 1 in A major, Op. 7 • BRAHMS: String Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 51 “One of the finest young string formations in Europe.” — The Times The Psophos Quartet is most certainly a key player in the European musical scene. Following the example of the Ysaÿe Quartet, their elders and teachers, in 2009 the Psophos Quartet welcomed two new members, Eric Lacrouts (violin) and Guillaume Martigné (cello). This change proved to be an enriching experience in both human and musical terms, as the balance provided by these new forces gives the ensemble a serenity that perpetuates its maturity and its high standards.

They are hugely varied in style, ranging from lyrical to angular, from whimsical to tormented. English song devotees Mark Stone and Sholto Kynoch are joined by soprano Michelle Walton, who beautifully sings the female songs in the Brian canon. In addition Kynoch plays four short, song-related solo-piano pieces. The booklet contains full texts and notes on the songs, as well as the second half of a short biography of Havergal Brian’s peculiar and fascinating life. A wonderful insight into the compositions of one of England’s most singular composers of the 20th century!

Balbastre’s Pièces de Clavecin from 1759 are influenced on the one hand by his royal and aristocratic patrons, and on the other by his contacts among the bourgeoisie, finding a stylistic balance between the two social classes. All the movements are character pieces dedicated either to members of the nobility, or to artists or other highly-placed individuals from the Parisian upper middle classes. The elevated style of French noblesse and grandeur are mirrored in the opening numbers.

Stradivarius Sviatoslav Richter: piano BEETHOVEN: Sonata No. 29 in B flat major, Op. 106, “Hammerklavier” Sviatoslav Richter is an all-around performer who has tackled musical repertoire from Bach to Webern, but has not been a performer identified with the Viennese classical composers. Yet Richter’s Beethoven repertoire is enormous, and he has performed nine concertos and nine sonatas by Mozart as well as various works of lesser proportions and many violin sonatas. At the present time it is easier to see the Beethoven-Richter relationship relatively clearly. We do not know if Richter took into account the fact that Beethoven had been an avid reader of Homer, but this performance of the Hammerklavier is, without any doubt, epic.

Founder of the German violin school and author of an authoritative method — the Violin School, published in 1832 — Louis Spohr was a prominent artist in Germany after the Congress of Vienna, admired by Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Chopin. Today we remember him above all for his substantial chamber production, which includes four splendid Double Concertos for strings.

This project involves exploring and the study of the composer’s work, which in this case is Daï Fujikura. Taking the instrument as the starting point, this expands to include the orchestra.

According to the American composer Aaron Copland, the best way to learn something about the sixties is to listen to The Beatles’ records. Without any doubt, the music of The Beatles has been a major phenomenon not only of the sixties, but of the 20th century as a whole, and their inspiring tunes continue to live on in the widest variety of formats and arrangements. This CD brings together carefully selected and imaginatively arranged songs by Luboš Krtiˇcka (b. 1965), a composer of chamber, choral, and film music who is also active in the Czech rock and jazz music scene.

Holbrooke’s charming little suite for strings, dating from the early 1900s, is the forerunner of the Ballet Suite Pierrot, Op. 36b. It was performed in Bournemouth in March 1908, conducted by the composer, and won for him the Charles Lucas Medal. “La Belle Dame sans Merci” was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society for their 1883 season. The inspiration for this tone poem is Keats’ ballad poem of the same name. “Thalassa” is Somervell’s only symphony. It received its first performance in February 1913, by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by none other than Arthur Nikisch.
