Few people were aware of Carlos’ early LP releases on the Brazil-based Chantecler label, the first of which was recorded when he was just 13 years old (Dez Dedos Magicos, 1958). Presented here along with Carlos’ second recording O Menino e o Violão (1959), we see a display of astonishing technical brilliance and an artistic maturity way beyond his years. These early LPs have been out of print for several decades, rare and highly sought-after by vintage guitar music collectors. None were ever previously released on CD! The first compilation devoted to Mario Lanza’s Neapolitan and Italian song recordings, representing the tenor at his interpretative peak in the genre! This collection comprises not only the highlights of his Mario! and Caruso Favourites albums, but the best of his earlier recordings of Neapolitan and Italian songs. It also includes a newly discovered rendition of “Mattinata.” Bonus tracks aside, the recordings are arranged chronologically, providing fascinating evidence of the rapid darkening of Lanza’s timbre during his final years, as his voice changed from a lirico spinto to a richer, pure spinto.

Simon Callaghan: piano COKE: 24 Preludes, Op. 33 • 24 Preludes, Op. 34 • 15 Variations and Finale, Op. 37 The name Roger Sacheverell Coke (1912–1972) is very little known, but he was a truly fine British composer whose music embraces a wide range of opera, symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and solo piano music. Coke dedicated his Second Symphony to his friend Rachmaninov, who often visited Coke in his home in the North of England. There is a feel of Rachmaninov’s Romanticism in Coke’s music, but it has its own unique language. Simon Callaghan, winner of the Prix Special in the 8ème Concours Jean Francaix in Paris, has made a special study of this scandalously neglected composer. This CD contains Coke’s two major piano works — a major discovery for lovers of British music! An in-depth interview featuring Callaghan’s work and discovery of Coke was recently published in International Piano magazine. He has also written a blog on Coke’s life and work for Gramophone (online now).

This year, the Estonian composer celebrates his 80th birthday. More than four decades ago, the musician Arvo Pärt fell silent, and went into retreat for eight years. His silence gave rise to a new kind of music, which has gained him international fame. “I have discovered that it is enough if a single note is beautifully played,” Pärt once said. Based on his study of the cathedrals of sound of the Renaissance, the composer has developed a very personal and original style: music inspired by spirituality, striving to accomplish the ideal of perfect simplicity.

The use of the sobriquet “King of Instruments” for the organ is well known, and the violin was the instrument of the royal courts of Europe from the 17th century until after the Enlightenment. The chiasmus offered by the juxtaposition of these two instruments was thus irresistible as the title of a disc that features works for violin and organ or piano by three organist-composers: Herbert Sumsion, Harold Darke, and Richard Pantcheff. Recorded in December 2014 in the Chapel of Jesus College, Cambridge, this disc highlights the Hudlestone Organ, built by the Swiss firm of Orgelbau Kuhn and installed in 2007.

Nimbus Alliance Vladimir Feltsman: piano SCHUMANN: Album for the Young, Op. 68 After charting four albums simultaneously on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Albums chart last year, eminent pianist Vladimir Feltsman turns to Schumann’s “Album for the Young.” Many of Schumann’s piano works are staples of the repertoire, but rarely is “Album for the Young” performed or recorded by first-rate musicians. This recording readdresses this disparity and reveals the character and qualities of these charming compositions. Pianist and conductor Vladimir Feltsman is one of the most versatile and consistently interesting musicians of our time. His vast repertoire encompasses music from the Baroque to 20th-century composers. A regular guest soloist with leading symphony orchestras in the United States and abroad, he appears in the most prestigious concert series and music festivals all over the world.

Charlotte de Rothschild The Songs of Roger Quilter CD: NIM 5930 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25
Few composers — especially song composers — can claim to have written works that have remained in print since they were first published more than 100 years ago. Roger Quilter is one such, though the number of his songs still in print is regrettably small. Quilter studied piano at the Frankfurt Conservatory, where his fellow students included Cyril Scott, Balfour Gardiner, and Percy Grainger. They were known as the Frankfurt Group, though they had little in common beyond a dislike of Beethoven. Quilter took the drawing-room song into another world: the sound and style is warm, tonal though often highly chromatic with an almost iridescent quality, a generous-sounding late-flowering Romantic color, and highly sensitive to the text. These songs are immensely rewarding to sing and play, and exploration reveals more and more of their sheer musical depths.

BMC Records György Philipp, Márk Bubnó, Tamás Bubnó: vocal soloists Levente Horváth Márton: organ Schola Cantorum Budapestiensis Tamás Bubnó, János Mezei: conductors SEREI: Sunday Vespers • ZOMBOLA: Vesperae per annum Singing the Evening Office — the Vespers — was a part of the celebration of the feast days for the priests and their congregations ever since the early centuries of Christianity. This practice survived until the end of the Middle Ages, and in certain regions of Europe, such as Transylvania, even up to recent times. Two Hungarian composers representing two modern generations, Zsolt Serei and Péter Zombola, reached back to this tradition and composed two Vespers cycles. These full cycles were not meant to be performed on one occasion; rather, we encourage ambitious choirs and congregations to select some pieces from them for one liturgical occasion, and insert them into the Liturgy in the way clausulae were inserted in the 12th–13th century Notre Dame organum practice. Works of real artistic value deserve to become part of the daily celebrated liturgy.

Johann Gottlieb Goldberg (1727–1756) would have never imagined that his name would be linked in history to the Aria and the 30 variations composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Undoubtedly, the Goldberg Variations are some of the most fascinating works for keyboard. Despite Bach’ss reticence for creating variations due to his always identical harmony, the humble Leipzig singer left us a huge art work that catches all who hear it.

Neilson Taylor, Alan Dudley, Vernon Midgley, Leslie Fyson: vocal soloists The Ambrosian Singers BBC Concert Orchestra Ashley Lawrence: conductor LEIGH: Jolly Roger (complete opera) In 1942 The Musical Times reported a “grave loss,” referring to Walter Leigh’s tragically early death, after he was killed in action while serving in a tank regiment near Tobruk just before his 37th birthday. Though during his lifetime he was often compared to Sir Arthur Sullivan, from a contemporary standpoint an equally pertinent analogy could be drawn with a composer from a later generation, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. With a cast headed by George Robey, known to audiences as “the Prime Minister of Mirth,” the comic opera Jolly Roger opened at the Opera House, Manchester in February 1933. Running for over six months, it enjoyed critical success from the outset.

This CD concludes the series of concerts at the Walcker Organ of St. Anne’s in Annaberg-Buchholz. Its stylistic disposition appears as ideal for French as well as for German romantic organ music, but also the baroque repertoire can be attractively interpreted, as the previous recordings in this series show. For this third volume Matthias Süß demonstrates the fantastic potential of the organ for modern and post-Romantic compositions.
