GERALD CLEAVER, WILLIAM PARKER & CRAIG TABORN FARMERS BY NATURE
Press Quotes “As a sideman, Taborn has thrived in polar extremes. He swung hard with sax bruiser James Carter, wandered open space with Roscoe Mitchell and Mat Maneri, and dove into ice-cold ambience with Detroit technocrat Carl Craig.” — JazzTimes “[Parker is] one of the true leaders in American music” — JazzTimes

Overview A fully improvised communion of three of America’s masters of music. The manifest intent: sowing seeds of sound and bringing them to full blossom. Recorded live at NYC’s new music venue The Stone, Farmers By Nature presents the entire concert of June 19, 2008, which was the third improv meeting of drummer Gerald Cleaver, bassist William Parker, and pianist Craig Taborn specifically brought together by Cleaver with the express intent of making a singular new music. Gerald Cleaver is a born and bred Detroit native and a product of the city’s rich music tradition. He continues to astound listeners around the world, and has been called to work and record with Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris, Mat Maneri, and many more. Pianist/composer Craig Taborn, who played with Cleaver while both were still in college, first achieved renown as a member of the James Carter Quartet in the early ’90s. He has since developed his own distinct language and concept on the keyboards as a leader. William Parker is among the most active and highly regarded musicians performing today. In March 2007, Time Out New York named him one of its 50 Greatest New York Musicians Of All Time. These three were first heard together on AUM Fidelity in the very different context of the Rob Brown Ensemble album Crown Trunk Root Funk (2008), and Cleaver is one of two drummers (along with Hamid Drake) featured on William Parker’s Double Sunrise Over Neptune (2008).

ELDER UTAH SMITH I GOT TWO WINGS
Selling Points • The long-awaited new production from the widely respected CaseQuarter label, whose previous three releases have drawn great praise from the New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, and more. • Published African-American scholar Lynn Abbott has deeply researched and written the definitive account of sanctified electric guitar preacher and star of his time Elder Utah Smith. • 128-page perfect bound book (6”x83/4”) contains photos, anecdotes, testimonies, and more. • Accompanying 18-track CD, produced by CaseQuarter’s Kevin Nutt, is the definitive collection of Smith’s recorded works (with five previously unreleased Utah Smith tracks) and features a stunning array of very rare contemporaneous tracks by COGIC friends and associates. • Service/promotion to national press, e-media, and targeted regional press by AUM Fidelity. • Service/promotion to college/non-commercial radio by AUM Fidelity. • Ads with Signal To Noise, Wax Poetics, Arthur, Yeti, and Point of Departure.
Overview Despite waxing three of the hottest electric guitar records of the pre-rock ‘n’ roll years, almost nothing has been known about the life of sanctified electric guitar preacher Elder Utah Smith … until now. AfricanAmerican music scholar Lynn Abbott’s years of research have produced a remarkable biographical study, finally shining a light onto the preaching, healing, and guitar playing-ministry of this groundbreaking performer, whose revivals and appearances were as well known and anticipated in his time as those of any other sacred or secular musician or performer. Filled with fascinating anecdotes and first-hand remembrances and testimonies, I Got Two Wings features many rare, unpublished photographs and a 18-track CD produced by CaseQuarter’s Kevin Nutt. The CD includes five previously unknown Smith songs along with relevant performances by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Elder Curry, Rev. F.W. McGee, and two rocking performances by Smith’s daughter.

Overview Performer, songwriter, and prominent indie fringe record producer Martin Bisi returns to the realm of his personal recordings with 12 songs that emanated from his legendary recording lair over the last seven years. Bisi has been at the forefront of studio recording since 1981, with a long discography that stretches from Iggy Pop, The Ramones, and White Zombie to John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, and Sonic Youth. On his fourth full-length solo rendering since 1989, he expands fourpiece rock into a mutant, experimental pop concoction. The record is a personal document of Bisi’s life, times, and ongoing creative process: backup vocals whispered into eight-track recorders in the corners of airport terminals, guitar overdubs in crowded college youth hostels, lyrics written during breaks in other artists’ sessions, and a spoken story of a crazy late-night encounter in a Brooklyn bar. Sirens’ songs are vignettes of love, obsession, and the jungle of gender interactions.
Press Quotes “Layered soundscapes of guitars married to some pounding postshoegazer rock … This record is just shockingly great. Fire up that browser and get out the credit card.” — The Big Takeover “Dreamy-yet-intense shoegazer pop. Rightfully, it should be loud.” — Magnet “Great songs … complete with guitar overload and 6-string beauty as well. A classic if anyone’s looking.” — Dagger

Overview There is something to be said for dedication and hard work, and The Sleepover Disaster is the embodiment of these qualities. The Californiabased three-piece has hit its stride with its first nationally distributed release after a number of critically acclaimed homemade releases and selfbooked tours. Blending a rich mix of swirling, lush guitars that build a wall of sound that carries intelligent lyrics over the top of a solid backbeat, The Sleepover Disaster has taken it to the next level. The members like to call it “nogaze”—taking the roots of the early ’90s shoegaze scene and giving it a 21st century twist. The Sleepover Disaster has played with Earlimart, Starflyer 59, Radar Bros, Great Northern, and Lagwagon. Along the way they’ve released four recordings, all receiving glowing reviews from outlets such as Magnet, Alternative Press, Paste, The Big Takeover, Dagger, and Losing Today. The band has also garnered college radio and independent radio play across the US, and internationally.

Overview As the feral child of the Montreal indie music scene, Chocolat forgoes pretension for passion. Their dirty, retro, futuristic ass-shaking mix of psychedelic garage and bluesy folk-rock is the soundtrack for the misadventures of modern day miscreants everywhere. Singer and former one-man-band Jimmy Hunt’s Dylanesque crooning glides over frenzied riffs, serpentine bass lines, greasy organs, and pounding drums spit out by a pedigree of rock stripes fought and earned for by members of Demon’s Claws (In The Red), CPC Gangbangs (Swami Records), and The Cockroaches (Solid Sex Lovie Doll). Chocolat’s genre-crunching debut EP is partly indebted to early Kinks, Brian Jones-era Stones, The Yardbirds, The Seeds, The Pretty Things, and Johnny Cash as well as the Velvet Underground with a twist of Jacques Dutronc. Plowing through a French yéyé revisionist history of American garage and English freakbeat, their relentless energy nonetheless defies language with their catchy tunes and makes it futile to label them “French pop.” The seven songs deal with familiar rock ‘n’ roll literary topics like sleeping with your best friend’s girl, closet transvestites, drinking off your girlfriend’s pay check, Johnny Depp, groupies, being broke, and of course, watching the one you love grow fat. The band’s refined psycho-sexual boogie, modern psychedelia, classic soul-pop songwriting, and the raw power of their live sets hasn’t gone unrecognized as they’ve played across Canada and in the US alongside the likes of Jay Reatard, The Black Lips, King Khan, Times New Viking, and The Besnard Lakes. The EP is now finally released in the US and Europe, and foreshadows their upcoming full length due in September 2009. Everyone agrees, Chocolat is better than sex!

Overview Hot Panda’s debut full length was recorded in Winnipeg at MidOcean Studios by Ryan McVeigh (Boats!, Intercontinental Champion). Comparisons to giant luminaries such as Daniel Johnston and Talking Heads have been swirling about, and while it is always nice to be compared to such bands, Hot Panda has certainly found their own sound. Leaving behind the frozen garage jam sessions in which their musical explorations began, Hot Panda has been taking their unique blend of Britpop, Gypsy swing, glam, and lo-fi indie back and forth across Canada and the US since their formation in 2006.

AUN Motorsleep Genre: Metal Label: Alien8 Recordings CD: ALI 80 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Digipak; Box Lot 50 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Overview AUN, a.k.a. Martin Dumais, is an ambient drone artist from Montreal who describes his take on outsider-metal-meets-shoegaze as “blight metal.” Elements of AUN’s sound can be traced to the classic period of ambient music created by the likes of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schultz, as well as to contemporary players like Tim Hecker and Troum. Motorsleep is broken into eight movements, all blending almost seamlessly. The intensity slowly picks up momentum over the course of the first few movements, reaching full power during the third and fourth pieces before eventually giving way to a series of closing tracks that recall the likes of Fennesz or a more menacing William Basinski.

Overview The Love Language sounds like the Arcade Fire drank several bottles of bourbon and recorded an album on a shitty 4-track. This lo-fi pop brilliance is sure to be one of the first great records of 2009. The band’s eight-piece lineup delivers fierce shows featuring great arrangements and tons of youthful energy. The songs lean heavy on ’50s pop forms à la Ricky Nelson, and Stu McLamb is one of the best vocalists of his generation. The first single, “Lalita,” is an undeniable charge, and the follow-up single, “Sparxxx,” is Southern goth jangle at its finest.

Press Quotes “Hi Red Center make fast, disjointed rock music that prominently features electronics, trombone, and vibraphone, but they’re hardly a typical post-rock or noise-rock group.” — Dusted

Overview The sophomore album from New York City’s Hi Red Center moves from poignant, nostalgic musical terrain toward a kind of pure, beaming, quantum velocity. The band’s second album, Assemble, moves in a clear, concise direction while somehow containing instrumentation that, here and there, seems to slide off-track, breaking into weirdly juxtaposed parallel trajectories. But for all of their esoteric and almost academic experimentation, a cheerful soulfulness comes through that distinguishes HRC from many of their musical contemporaries.

Overview With his third full-length, Bizzart’s patented sound-collage-hip-hop takes on a more focused form. Ever since 2003’s Ear Drung, Bizzart’s method has been drastically free, reveling in the process of throwing sounds against the wall to see what sticks—and, more importantly, to see what interesting patterns might emerge. With Future Stars and Small Wonders, Bizzart seems to have built upon this Jackson Pollack approach, channeling it into something all together new. Bizzart teamed up with producer Innaspace to create his most subtle, introspective, accessible, and rewarding record to date. In his first release since 2007’s Twilight & Ghost Stories, Chris Schlarb presents his jazz quintet alongside the analog warmth of Nathaniel Frank and the Wisconsin Magic. Each group follows its own muse, with the Chris Schlarb Quintet incorporating loose compositional structures in addition to free jazz mash. Drums, vibraphone, upright bass, euphonium, and dueling electric guitars converge on this unique archival recording from 2003 featuring Noah Phillips, Justice Constantine, Anthony Shadduck, and Danny Levin. Nathaniel Frank and the Wisconsin Magic, led by their multi-instrumentalist front man, take a hard-charging approach to small unit jazz fusion. Reminiscent of Frank Zappa’s stripped down Hot Rats album, the trio runs through four tight original compositions with time signature changes, inspired melodies, and youthful exuberance.

Jeff Greinke Winter Light
OVERVIEW A body of work that captures elements of baroque chamber music infused with Jeff Greinke’s unmistakable sense of texture and visual suggestion. Balanced between a study in classical chamber composition and ethereal ambience, Winter Light evokes a distant, icy, somber landscape peppered with the visages of long sought-after memories.

Sir Richard Bishop Improvika Genre: Alt Rock Label: Locust Music LP: LST 61 Price Code: V (SRP $22.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 25 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
By trade Sir Richard Bishop is a dealer of rare occult books and fine paper ephemera. For many in the musical cosmos, he has had occasion to travel the smoke-filled carnie circuit as one-third of the Sun City Girls medicine show. But in the twilight hours of a shadow world once sensed only by few, Bishop is a dazzling unaccompanied guitarist. On Improvika, the artist rides a very tall horse through a surrealist’s cowboy set that’s one part brut Peckinpah muscularity and two parts illuminated Jodorowskian symbolism … a very strange place, indeed. Armed only with a single steel string wooden guitar, bare-knuckled Bishop fends off the horrors & dangers of the night with ease as he spits out glorious white-robed arabesques, Django-inspired gypsy arcs, and Latin terracotta flourishes like so many spinning tumbleweeds in a one horse town that is his alone.

Press Quotes “Song by song he chants cut-up denunciations of the Vietnam War and Wall Street and hits atonal Carl Perkins notes while drummer Walter de Maria, who would go on to erect the celebrated land-art work Lightning Field in New Mexico in 1977, runs around the room hitting things at random, and in time.” — Greil Marcus, City Pages

Henry Flynt I Don’t Wanna Genre: Alt Rock Label: Locust Music LP: LST 39 Price Code: V (SRP $22.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 25 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Overview Henry Flynt shatters categories once again with this surprise collection of his short-lived basement rock protest band, The Insurrections. Let there be no doubt in anyone’s mind: Flynt’s version of protest music isn’t your cultural-commissar school of folk posturing. It’s aggro, and Flynt is an unhinged showman on helium-induced vox and electric guitar (his teacher was none other than Lou Reed). Imagine a mix of Sky Saxon (of Seeds fame) with a dash of Roky Erickson thrown in on vocals, a little bit of the Cramps’ scary monster dramatics thrown in for good measure, and the swamp chugalug laziness of vintage Pussy Galore, and you get an idea of what Flynt was up to at this phase in his non-career.

Press Quotes “A visionary spirit captured up to his eyebrows in creativity, as usual.” — All Music Guide
Selling Points • Collecting key material from 1963 to 1971, Raga Electric is a seven-piece distillation of some of Henry Flynt’s most adventurous, audacious, outsider musical endeavors.
Overview Raga Electric begins with a bonkers treatment of the jarhead anthem “The Marine’s Hymn” sung in a thick-tongued, fully untutored Hindustani vocalese. The title cut, “Raga Electric,” is a twisted, howling fake Hindustani rag with staccato untuned guitar and bleating screams recorded at Flynt’s home just a few short hours after catching Pandit Pran Nath at a downtown morning concert. Side-long closer “Free Alto” is a monstrous exploration of the ins and outs of the tenor saxophone which, upon hearing it, Terry Riley referred to as “a very articulated musical program.”

Press quotes “Homespun Americana and modern classical music aren’t as far apart as one might think … Flynt creates a swirl of evolving sounds on his violin.” — No Depression
Selling Points • A splendid collection of high lonesome hillbilly fiddle and ukulele instrumentals.
Overview Like a hidden relic from the far side of the Harry Smith catalog, these early 1960s recordings are a splendid collection of high lonesome hillbilly fiddle and ukulele instrumentals that are surely Henry Flynt’s most articulated statements to date of his honest to god affinity and love for that dry earth choogaloo upper mountain lower boogaloo foot stomping folk music. Standouts include the acid fried 13th Floor Elevatorsish “Sky Turned Red” and the 15-minute lazy Zen epic hum-and-strum album closer, “Blue Sky, Highway and Tyme.” No doubt, this is Appalachian bruit driving music bar none.

On BPHB Volume 2, avant-hillbilly master fiddler Henry Flynt scuffles through a most peculiar set of electrified and acoustic bumpkin fiddle howls and screeches circa early to mid-1960s. From the enviable opener, in which Flynt does his best to compete with the electro-echo buzz of a Jorgen Ingmann or Link Wray, to the beauteous instrumental glow of the extended modal country jam of “Jamboree,” Flynt proves once again that his is not a music simply rooted in the taut belt of New York isms, schisms, and jisms. This is music that howls from a unique voice whose love for the folk songbook (known and imagined) is as resonant as a cowbell and as deep as a freshwater well.

Overview Steeped in the fingerpick-guitar rudiments of folk music, inspired by the expressionism of classic jazz vocalists, and finding common ground in the minimalism and ear-taunting of the avant-garde, Laura Gibson alights on a branch of the music tree that no one else has found. Equally deliberate, and as a nod to the vinyl record era, Beast Of Seasons is split into two parts—Part 1: Communion Songs and Part II: Funeral Songs. The songs isolate distinct and familiar emotions from the many reactions to death, ranging from fear (“Where Have All Your Good Words Gone”) and denial (“Sweet Deception”) to brave acceptance (“Funeral Song”). Gibson’s accomplice for Beasts of Seasons was friend and Grammy Awardnominated producer Tucker Martine. The project offered Martine a departure from the grand visions of bands like The Decemberists and Sufjan Stevens, and the computer in Martine’s studio was eschewed in favor of a vintage, slightly shaky two-inch tape machine. Limited to sixteen tracks, many things were recorded live. Instead of laying down multiple horn tracks, they invited all of their horn-playing friends over one afternoon. Instead of multi-tracked vocal harmonies, they formed a choir of compatriots. In fact, many friends dropped in to contribute, including musical collaborator Rachel Blumberg (M. Ward, Bright Eyes), Nate Query (The Decemberists), Adam Selzer (Norfolk and Western, M. Ward), avant-garde violist and composer Eyvind Kang, solo artists Laura Veirs and Shelly Short, Danny Seim (Menomena), and many of the people who have formed Gibson’s touring band over the past two years (Cory Gray, Sean Ogilvie, Dave Depper, Jason Leonard, and Micah Rabwin). With Beasts of Seasons, Gibson offers up an intimate affirmation of mortality that is vulnerable and courageous, ordinary and extraordinary.

Overview The Bran Flakes are back! Six years since their last full release, Otis Fodder and Mildred Pitt return with the thrillingly fun I Have Hands on Illegal Art. Formed in 1992 amidst tape and zine trading scenes, The Bran Flakes have already put out seven releases of zany mashups and poppy audio collages that are more likely to cop a riff from Evel Knievel than anything on the current radio dial. Call them the cover boys of Cool and Strange Music or simply misfits with giant paper-mâché heads—these boys have amassed a cult following for their childlike concoctions that evoke flashbacks of a sugar-induced high while watching Sesame Street. The new album I Have Hands is 100% samples. No other band dares to invite Lawrence Welk, Mr. Rogers, Van Halen, and Strawberry Shortcake to the same party. One track uses Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” at its center, juxtaposes the familiar guitar pluck from Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” and ends with the Osmonds singing about freedom. While the look and feel is distinct, The Bran Flakes are right at home on the label that has championed Girl Talk, Steinski, and other samplephiliacs.

Overview Developed over a two-month period, Luke Temple’s self-titled debut under his new moniker is a remarkable departure from his signature singer-songwriter material. Many of the songs pulse with infectious Afro-beat and Krautrock-influenced grooves, calling to mind classic albums like Remain in the Light and Graceland. Overview
Loren Connors The Curse of Midnight Mary
In 1981 guitarist Loren Connors took his tape recorder to the Connecticut graveyard where the legendary Midnight Mary’s grave lies. The curse: anyone caught in her graveyard past midnight will die the next day. But Connors taped in that place and made this album, which was lost and forgotten until 2008. Recorded between his eight-volume Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations LPs and the folk albums he would make with Tom Hanford and Kath Bloom, these nine pieces meld those two forms. Connors, singing in a trancelike moan, reforms the Mississippi Delta blues on his acoustic guitar with flashes of melodic hooks and a percussive guitar style that erupts into boogie-woogie riffs and other world spirituals. A rare and essential peek into the mysterious early years of the American guitar master.

Overview After their debut garnered very good reviews from some unexpected sources, the boys in Giant Brain figured it was time to make a new one. So, Andy & Al Sutton and Philip Durr enlisted the talents of Eric Hoegemeyer. Though Thorn of Thrones retains the Teuto-American synergy and Detroit-cum-Dortmund freak-out elements of Plume, it is a darker, more dynamic record. Some have attributed this newfound skepticism and doubt to the current state of the world. We here at Small Stone wouldn’t know about that, but we feel that regardless, the sky is blue, the flowers bloom, and Giant Brain makes great records. “How long will YOU live?”

Selling Points • Features Alan Dubin (ex-Khanate, OLD), Jamie Sykes (ex-Burning Witch, Thorr’s Hammer, Atavist), Carter Thornton (Enos Slaughter), Jun Mizumachi (ex-Ike Yard), and Brian Beatrice (Emmy Award winning sound design/mix wizard). • Jamie Sykes is a percussive madman blasting out anything from tribal beats to ultra slow tom killings. • Jun Mizumachi is a renowned sound designer for film & TV, and a master of electronics including synths, factory noise, metal bashing, and other craziness. • Brian Beatrice is also a sound designer and mixer for film & TV. He mixed This Face as well as experimenting and adding additional sounds. • Carter Thornton is a crafty musician who actually makes his own instruments. Here, he plays guitar, bass, piano, and some unnamed homemade “things.”
Overview GNAW’s debut is the sonic culmination of over a year of sound experimentation—a genre-destroying journey that almost defies description. Screaming, singing, whispers, and chants can be heard throughout, and ex-KHANATE member Alan Dubin’s lyrics are vivid portrayals of all things bad.

Overview Taiga’s electronic hymns are deeply personal and spiritual—complex riddles that are buried under post-traumatic tape hiss and disturbing reverb. New age minimalism and post-ambient clouds highly influenced by Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Brian Eno, Cluster, and Terry Riley. The micro-cinematic voyage feels like Peter Fonda’s dazzling appearance in the ’67 LSD epic The Trip.

Overview
Strings of Consciousness & Angel Strings of Consciousness & Angel Genre: Experimental Label: Conspiracy Records LP: CNS 72 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 15
An intricate and imaginative soundtrack that gathers both organic and sonic elements to assemble a post-industrial sound structure. The latter will give life to a noisy magma where unexpected clicks stumble over interferences, where digital accidents happen, and where acoustic resonance fills the space in time. A multitude of digital notes will slowly stretch to reach a dark-grey chaos; a pure and clean big bang echoing and calling lost sound memories.
Track Listing #1 • #2
NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Selling Points • Limited edition of 300, in black print with varnish foldout sleeve, pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. • Have shared stages with Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Trio, Deaththroes, Kites, and Jesu. • Ex-members of experimental rock group Fog (Lex Records, Ninja Tune).
Overview Heatdeath’s hellish third endeavor leaves no mortal soul untouched, a stretched horizon for humanoids who dwell in the sounds of Abruptum, Emit, Jim O’Rourke, Sunroof, and classic ’70s horror hysteria. Six blasphemic cuts of corrupted data and contaminated files circle like vultures around broken chipboards, molded from the original chemical residue into an improved spacious Blade Runner-esque landscape where cyborgs are dipped in vats of acid. A fractured sonic attack that questions the purpose of any technologically advanced civilization.

Press Quotes “This is creative, gut-wrenching, no-holds-barred zealousness, but thrown out with respect and honesty. Indeed, punk jazz at its finest.” — Cadence

The Thirteenth Assembly (un)sentimental
Overview The Thirteenth Assembly began as a touring collective made up of four musicians and four musically distinct small ensembles: Tomas and Taylor’s duo; Mary and Jessica’s duo; Taylor’s trio with Mary and Tomas; and a newly formed collaborative quartet. In live performances each group performs a short set, but this CD focuses on the quartet music. Although each member has longstanding relationships performing together in various configurations, The Thirteenth Assembly marks the first time they have played as a quartet, and each player contributed compositions written specifically for this ensemble.

Devil Eyes Rip My Heart Out Genre: Alt Rock Label: Signed By Force 7”: SBF 8122 Price Code: D (SRP $6.99) 7” Sleeve; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Overview The first serving of Devil Eyes’ debut full-length album, to be released for the rockstarved masses in Spring 2009. Devil Eyes have been carving their name into the underbelly of Montreal’s rock scene since early 2006. Their music is a raw, lean explosion of garage, no-wave, klezmer, noise, blues, metal, and Japanese punk, yet they somehow manage to make sense out of the chaos in a joyfully ear-shattering ream of songs. The trio makes their own style of experimental dance-punk, but checks influences like Motörhead, Guitar Wolf, Comets On Fire, Les Rallizes Dénudés, and Captain Beefheart as well as bands like ESG and The Contortions.
