BEST CHAMBER MUSIC PERFORMANCE PRODUCER OF THE YEAR—JUDITH SHERMAN Jennifer Koh & Reiko Uchida String Poetic CED 103 “Possessed of great technical skill, exquisite tone, and engaging interpretive personality, [Koh’s] name should, and I predict will, become even better known … This recording is highly recommended for anyone interested in virtuoso violin (and piano) playing and anyone who wishes to experience some really fine, accessible works of modern American chamber music.” — Fanfare BEST SMALL ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE Schoenberg Ensemble/De Leeuw: cnd Im Wunderschoenen Monat Mai WTR 132 “Im Wunderschönen Monat Mai, De Leeuw’s own tribute to Sukowa’s artistry, is effectively a postmodern riff on lieder by Schubert and Schumann, a selection of which have been recomposed round Sukowa’s sprechstimme delivery of the texts, and, in many cases, the original melodies … [Sukowa] is riveting and the quirkily beautiful instrumentations are suavely played by the Schoenberg Ensemble, conducted by De Leeuw himself.” — The Guardian BEST CLASSICAL CROSSOVER ALBUM Uri Caine Ensemble The Othello Syndrome WTR 135 “A wild ride in a fast machine … Uri Caine has defined his corner of jazz to a point that he has no peer and that corner is ever fascinating and endlessly revealing and entertaining. … The Othello Syndrome is Uri Caine at his mad scientist best: conjuring music from a million different places and making it sound like it was with you at home all the time.” — All About Jazz

“Helmuth Rilling, at least on British shores (where we fancy that we know exactly how this composer should be performed!) doesn’t have any great reputation for conducting Britten, but here turns in a War Requiem of immense impact. Just listen to the Dies irae and there you have it—the scale is not of strings and drums, but cannons and screams. The shock of war pounds the listener with every bar.” — Gramophone Editor’s Choice, November 2008

“The award-winning Atrium Quartet find a fascinating range of moods in Shostakovich’s Fifth String Quartet, not least a sense of fun that threatens to spiral into something far more sinister. The musical emotions remain mixed right to the end, in a performance as thought provoking as it is involving … a disc to have.” — Gramophone Editor’s Choice, November 2008 Cat # ZIG 80702 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Not Available In Canada

“[Fey’s] leadership of the Heidelberger Sinfoniker and collaboration with hänssler CLASSIC not only keeps listeners at the edge of their seats throughout each album, but leaves them craving the release of the next installment. The orchestra’s sound—produced by modern strings and winds with period brass and timpani—is utterly scintillating … Fey’s decision to use period instruments here is a brilliant one. Fey’s vision of Haydn is one of unabashed energy and vitality, and all of his musical decisions—from dynamics to tempo choice—are made with Haydn’s original intentions in mind … Listeners can hopefully look forward to volumes 10 and beyond in the very near future.” — All Music Guide (HHHHH performance/HHHHH sound) “Musica Viva’s performances are dedicated, lively, spirited, and polished, and the recording quality is terrific. Fuga Libera’s Alexander Alyabiev: The Magic Drum Orchestral & Instrumental Music fills in an essential—and heretofore, missing—piece of the puzzle regarding nineteenth-century Russian orchestral music. Those who love Tchaikovsky’s ballet music will be floored by Alyabiev’s anticipation of it nearly twenty years before Tchaikovsky was born.” — All Music Guide (HHHHH performance/HHHHH sound)

“For the model of a record label that invariably produces discs—by which I mean packaging included—of exceptional quality, look no further than Zig-Zag Territoires. The sense of care extends from the nearly always-polished musical performances to beautifully designed and intelligently put-together booklets and cover art. This Tartini is a winner in all respects … Taking Tartini at his word, a dazzling display from the Swiss violinist.” — Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Awards Issue

“As it is, Goldenweiser’s music is completely unknown, but certainly ripe for rediscovery. Powell makes an excellent case for it; his playing is clean and respectful, generously expressive in the more romantically styled pieces, yet lithe, tart, and succinct in the Contrapuntal Sketches. Hopefully, this series will go far beyond the Vol. 1 indicated here; with the appetite whipped up with the highly engaging and illuminating statement made by Goldenweiser’s music, it makes one hungry for the full course.” — All Music Guide (HHHHH performance/HHHHH sound)

Of all the instruments developed during the Renaissance, the bassoon undoubtedly possesses the most curious history. Associated with music in the open air, it was also praised for the sweetness of its sound. The musicians of Syntagma Amici explore its use as a family of instruments in polyphonic repertoire of the 16th century as well as in the first virtuoso pieces that were dedicated to it at the beginning of the 17th century.

Gavin BRYARS A Listening Room

Cat # GVB 8 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 25 Not Available In Canada

This “listening room” is an installation that takes the form of an acoustic map of the Chateau d’Oiron in France. Specific music was written in order to establish the architectural acoustic of each space and to animate the spaces in which the music was played. This was recorded ambisonically, and a listening room was established in the chateau where the listener can hear the natural acoustic of each source room. This room is, therefore, both a map of the space and a space in itself. Along with Gavin Bryars himself, this recording features two members of his ensemble as well as his sound designer and engineer. In addition, he uses members of the village band (La Fanfare d’Oiron), accepting the eccentricities of their performance and adding three players to the ensemble for two rooms. This is a unique recording of that installation, which has played in the chateau since 1993 and has been exhibited at the 2006 Alvar Aalto Architecture Symposium and in the Musée d’Angers in France. Jennifer Thiessen, Jill Van Gee: violas Elisabeth Giroux: cello Njo Kong Kie: piano BRYARS/LANG: Amjad (complete ballet) Gavin Bryars has a long association with dance (including Biped, his music for Merce Cunningham). Amjad, his second work with Edouard Lock’s La La La Human Steps, takes those moments that one might call “iconic” in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. The ballet has toured the world since its 2007 premiere, and continues to be performed to great critical acclaim. The performers on this recording have been with the work since its inception. The sequence of pieces here is the order in which they appear in the ballet itself.

When the Sonatas of III Parts were published in 1683, Henry Purcell presented an epoch-making cycle that was the first of its kind in England. Within one year of publishing, a second edition had to be printed. The exact history of the pieces’ origins, whose manuscript is preserved in the British Library, is unknown.

Royal Philharmonic Masterworks

Release Date: February 10, 2009

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Mark Ermler: conductor BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 6 in F, Op. 68 “Pastoral” • Egmont Overture Composers usually know what they want, but they can make a meal of convincing other people about it. There is a distinctly modern ring to the story of Beethoven’s benefit concert of 1808, when he insisted on giving the Viennese public four hours of mostly new music. The performances were variable, to say the least: one of them broke down, having already had its first section improvised on the piano by the composer. With romantic hindsight we might long to have been there, because the concert included first performances of the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies and the Choral Fantasy, as well as the first public performances in Vienna of the Fourth Piano Concerto and parts of the Mass in C. Perhaps instead, we should use our hindsight to marvel that the music did not disappear into the obscurity that would absorb most pieces introduced in such conditions.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Douglas Bostock: conductor ˇ DVORÁK: Slavonic Dances, Op. 46 & 72 (sel.) Following the success of Brahms’Hungarian Dances, Dvoˇrák was persuaded by his publisher Simrock to compose a set of Slavonic Dances in a similar mold, to which the composer complied in 1878 with a set of Eight Pieces for Piano Duet, Opus 42. It seems clear that Dvoˇrák always intended these for orchestra, and he began to orchestrate them before the set was complete. They were an immediate success in both piano and orchestral formats, and were followed in 1887 by a second set of eight, published as Opus 72. The sixteen dances are infused with the spirit of Slavonic folk music, although they are in every sense original works. Only one of the dances makes use of known folk material (Opus 72 No. 5), which even then is transformed into something wholly individual in the crucible of the composer’s creativity.

Ronan O’Hora: piano Royal Philharmonic Orchestra James Judd: conductor GRIEG: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16 • Lyric Pieces (sel.) The piano concerto was completed in the summer of 1868, while Grieg was on holiday in Denmark. The 25-year-old composer was staying near Copenhagen, and had deliberately set time aside for composition work. By now he had become interested in the folk music of Norway, and his music was beginning to show more nationalist romanticism and fewer traces of the influence of Schumann. Nonetheless, when he came to plan the concerto, it was Schumann’s A Minor Piano Concerto of 1841 that provided the structural basis for his own lyrical masterpiece, and this has led critics to deride the work as a weak imitation of the earlier concerto. However, generations of pianists and music lovers have decided otherwise.

He felt that American composers were neglecting a valuable source of exciting and beautiful musical material, and urged them to examine the music of the black communities and the Native American Indians. Succeeding generations of indigenous American composers were quick to follow his example, and the exploration of folk traditions became an important element in their music. Copland’s brilliant work, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, reflects this tradition.

Through his involvement with avant-garde physics, sculpture, and contemporary dance, as well as cooperation with instrumentalists who dedicate themselves with exceptional enthusiasm to the premiering of new musical works, Héctor Parra has spent the past few years developing an ever-sharper, more varied, and more polyphonic musical language. His electronic processing and spatial use of instrumental sounds places listeners in a state of “high sonic energy” in which understanding of the space-time we find ourselves in at the moment of performance can be simultaneously questioned and enriched.

The five orchestral works on this CD communicate phenomenal colors and the intense sensuousness of mysterious formal progressions. Silence, shadows, and absence: it is above all the darker neighborhoods of the human soul that captivate Sánchez-Verdú’s interest. Exploring marginal realms that, in their beauty and refinement of tone, contain both the brilliant light of Spain’s south as well as utter darkness: this is the art of composer José M. Sánchez-Verdú.

The recordings are set in the familiar resonance of the Wyastone Leys concert hall and are very good indeed.” — MusicWeb International [NIM 5818] First volume in a series of four that will be issued over the next 12 months. A torchbearer at Beethoven’s funeral and the composer’s pupil, friend, and protégé, Carl Czerny is almost forgotten today except as the author of educational piano pieces and the author of a long-influential piano method. But like his peers among Beethoven’s circle of friends—notably Ferdinand Ries and Ignaz Moscheles—Czerny carried on the torch of the late classical style into the age of Romanticism, and made a distinctive contribution through his own creative work. He was a gigantically prolific composer, and much of his huge output has remained unknown since his death. also available STRAVINSKY Music for Piano (2 CDs) Cat # NIM 5519 Price Code: 2E Not Available In Canada

Vaughan Williams’ hauntingly beautiful The Lark Ascending is one of his most enduringly popular works, with its title taken from a poem by George Meredith. This serene romance may seem simple, but it is also of considerable originality, capturing the idyllic mood of pre-1914 England.

This recording by leading British chamber ensemble Chamber Domaine celebrates the 75th birthday of one of the world’s most popular living composers. Górecki’s worldwide fame is largely due to the commercial success of his best known work, the 3rd Symphony, A Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. A recording in 1992 by Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta sold in excess of a million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful classical music recordings of all time and catapulting its veteran composer into the media spotlight. There is a wealth of beautiful music by Górecki that has rarely been heard. Chamber Domaine’s approach on this recording, which contains no less than seven world premieres, is to present an overview of his varied output from intimate pieces composed during his studies in the 1950s to large-scale ensemble works published after his commercial breakthrough in the 1990s. Chamber Domaine is at the cutting edge of music making in the 21st century. Its excellence and dynamism have received widespread acclaim in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Beautiful and evocative new music for a trio of double basses—performed by three Juilliard-trained virtuosi. Trios for Deep Voices is a powerful, virtuosic five-movement work inspired by the composer’s life in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, where he lived among local tribes, studying their music and culture. Each movement directly reflects or describes Papuan sounds and atmospheres as translated through the double bass. Only recently returned to the States after years of living in China, composer Roberts is a most unusual “world” musician. Upon receiving his doctorate from Juilliard, he set off to the jungles of Papua New Guinea to study “music’s natural prosody.” Later, as a Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan, he studied the qin, an ancient zither-like instrument. Cold Blue will release a recording of his solo qin pieces in Fall 2009.

Christof Keymer: piano MOSZKOWSKI: 15 transcriptions of familiar works by Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Bizet, Wagner, Offenbach, Handel & Czerny • Musical Parodies (Published as “Anton Notenquetscher am Klavier”) Piano transcriptions offer the opportunity to portray the color spectrum and aural diversity of an entire orchestra on the piano. One brilliant example of such works is offered by the piano transcriptions of Moritz Moszkowski. Celebrated in his own lifetime as a composer and virtuoso, after his death Moszkowski slipped slowly into oblivion—undeservedly, since his transcriptions bring together all the facets of a virtuoso arranger. He made transcriptions of piano works and orchestral music, as well as of operas. In his recording of Moszkowski’s entire transcription output, Christof Keymer impressively presents the compositional refinement of diverse adaptations, which easily bear comparison to those of the great Franz Liszt. Includes the bonus of Moszkowski’s musical parodies, in which he humorously imitates the compositional styles of Chopin, Brahms, and Bach.

Die Meistersinger

Romantic Music for Male Choir Die Meistersinger 24 choral songs by Friedrich Silcher, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Weber, Johannes Gelbke, Conradin Kreutzer, Dmitrij Bornjanskij, and Kurt Lissman The male choir reached its height of popularity during the 19th century. Nearly every village had groups of amateurs that would regularly get together to rehearse and perform. Naturally, there was a highly lucrative market for composers to write music for these ensembles. Much of this music was utilitarian, and has been rightfully forgotten. The pieces on this CD, however, should receive a permanent place in the repertoire. This recording also features the hänssler CLASSIC debut of the justifiably named Meistersingers: masterful singers who perform this repertoire with sensational perfection and interpret it with sincerity and feeling.

Jascha Nemtsov succeeds here with a great and intelligent coupling, which regards approaches phenomenon of childhood from a dramatic and somewhat dark side.

BACH: Viola Concerto in C minor • HOFFMEISTER: Viola Concerto in D • TELEMANN: Viola Concerto in G • HINDEMITH: Trauermusik During recent years the solo concert repertory for viola has been extended by several works. One example is the Viola Concerto in C, the reconstruction of a harpsichord concerto by Johann Sebastian Bach. Other compositions, such as those by Ignace Joseph Pleyel or Antonio Rosetti, have been published for the first time. They are all welcome additions to this classical genre, one of whose most ingenious works is surely Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major. Two further classical works are the Concertos in D major by Carl Stamitz (Op. 1) and Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754–1812). The latter was known and respected in his time not only as a composer, but also as a publisher. Both works are the most common audition pieces for viola players to this day.

Vivaldi wrote many of these concertos for girls brought up and educated in the Venetian Hospitals, institutes whose task it was to recover and look after orphans and abandoned children. The French humanist and historian Charles de Brosses wrote about the instrumental and vocal abilities of the girls in his Lettres Historiques et Critiques sur I’Italie: “Brought up at the expense of the State, these girls are taught and instructed simply so that they may distinguish themselves in music. Thus they sing like angels and play the violin, the flute, the organ, the oboe, the cello, the bassoon; in short there is not an instrument, however great it may be, that can daunt them.”

Rinaldo, first performed on February 27, 1711 in London, belongs to the short but rich series of operas on magical subjects that the composer produced between 1710 and 1735. Both the musical and dramatic material of the opera are handled in eighteenth century fashion, especially evident in the arias (which are successful in melodic as well as in psychological terms) and in the “recitative secco” which is perfectly cantabile, though often much reduced since the opera’s English audience would have found the Italian text incomprehensible.

Claudio MONTEVERDI

Il ritorno di Ulisse in Patria (3 CDs) Leroy Villanueva, Gloria Banditelli, Mark Tucker, Ivan Kiurkciev, Harry van der Kamp: vocal soloists/Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca/Alan Curtis: conductor MONTEVERDI: Il ritorno di Ulisse in Patria (complete opera) Il Ritorno di Ulisse in Patria, drama in music by Claudio Moneteverdi on a text by Giacomo Badoaro, was first performed in 1641 at the San Cassiano Theatre in Venice. The work was immediately a great success and was given a further performance soon after in Bologna, with the same performers. The performance won the same success as the premiere. Strangely enough, after the great success of these two performances little more was heard of the opera. This recording makes this rare treat available to modern listeners. Gaetano DONIZETTI Linda di Chamounix Cat # OPD 1489 Price Code: 2K SRP $11.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 Not Available In Canada

Margherita Carosio, Gianni Raimondi, Giuseppe Taddei: vocal soloists La Scala, Milan, Orchestra & Chorus Alfredo Simonetto: conductor DONIZETTI: Linda di Chamounix (complete opera) Donizetti had written about sixty operas already when he produced Linda di Chamounix, the last and best of his works in the semiseria style. It contains many captivating tunes, but is far more than a string of vocal pearls: its structure is unusually sophisticated, permitting much flexibility in dramatic pacing; and Donizetti establishes a distinct tone-coloring for each character, even using leitmotifs, which were supposedly invented years later by Wagner. The story isn’t a very exciting one, but as Donizetti authority William Ashbrook has written, “The merits of Linda obviously far outweigh its shortcomings, most of which can be blamed upon the libretto. From the first-rate overture to the buoyant duet-finale, there is hardly a page lacking in some distinction.”
