NEWS “A LANDMARK COLLECTION” HAITI BOX IN NY TIMES & WALL STREET JOURNAL Alan Lomax In Haiti HRT 103 NY Times Holiday Gift Guide: “The folklorist Alan Lomax visited Haiti, with an aluminum-disc recorder, in 1936–37, gathering music from singers, salon bands, vodun (or voodoo) ceremonies, churches, carnivals, even Boy Scouts; he made films, too. Lomax thought his field recordings were too noisy for release. Now a leading Haitian music scholar, Gage Averill, has sifted the collection into coherent CDs—and annotated them to decode lyrics and styles—while digital processing has reduced the noise to a rhythmic hiss. The music Lomax gathered from professionals and amateurs is gloriously alive: ebullient clarinet-topped dance orchestras, brisk string bands, work songs, topical songs, percussive rituals. There are styles that would bounce around the Caribbean (and into New Orleans) and deep echoes of Africa. It’s a landmark collection, a time capsule of an entire society’s voices.” Wall Street Journal: “In 1936, in the middle of scouring rural America for folk music that might have vanished forever if not for his efforts, ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax traipsed off to Haiti for four months with his 19-year-old fiancée and a 55-pound recording unit. The results are only now available for anyone to hear … In the music, scholars are hearing sounds believed nearly extinct.”

Overview

Bridge Carols, the new project from Laura Gibson and Ethan Rose, takes the listener to a place that exists between the notes and behind the words of modern music. The project began as a conversation of mutual appreciation and curiosity—a shared desire to challenge old ways of working. Rose had mostly distanced his music from words, while Gibson had often felt bound by them. Inspired by her voice, Rose began building soundscapes while Gibson looked through piles of notebooks, coming across old phrases that never found home in verses or rhymes. As the project developed, Gibson began improvising lyrics and wordless vocalizations that tumbled out in long, trailing waves. Rose then reshaped tones and sounds around her words and the resulting pieces developed into Bridge Carols, a record of deep atmosphere and an almost sublingual resonance.

Press Quotes

Press Quotes

“Grace and danger aptly describe the poles of John Martyn’s music. His delicate, jazz-tinged pop-folk is among the most elegant of its kind, while his lilting, seductively throaty vocals trace intricate vulnerabilities. Yet Martyn’s more exotic numbers favor electronically distorted guitar work, a lethal bass line, and chaotic, clattering arrangements that suggest incipient violence and something untamed lurking in the shadows of the heart.” — Rolling Stone

In an age of noise and obfuscation, Mark David Ashworth has searched tirelessly for clarity and purpose. Out of this search comes Bright Is The Ring Of Words, the San Francisco songwriter’s ruminative second album. Coming together over the span of a year and a half, the album was recorded in Ashworth’s tiny room in San Francisco’s Mission District and in a middle school orchestra room north of the Golden Gate, where his multi-instrumentalist collaborator, Tristan Arnold, teaches. Ashworth’s musical influences read like a collection of dusty records hoarded away in a poet’s attic, with artists ranging from 1960’s Spanish cantatores like Luis Eduardo Aute and Joan Manuel Serrat to modern ghosts like Nick Drake and Townes Van Zandt. Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, and Randy Newman are obvious touchstones, as are the atmospherics of Meddle-era Pink Floyd—all rounded out by a heady dose of the church music of Ashworth’s childhood.

Led by the ex-guitarist of psych band The Besnard Lakes, this power trio carves out an idiosyncratic niche amidst formal composition, directed improvisation, avantrock, and free jazz. The music is at once composed and spontaneous, considered and visceral, stripped-down and opulent. The players draw from a wealth of experience in different styles (disco, R&B, indie rock, jazz, chamber music) and influences (Wayne Krantz, Ben Monder, Ralph Towner) to make genre-defying music that is fresh, surprising, and engaging.

Rise To Addiction’s second album, Some Other Truth, is a collection of the finest modern classic rock by a young band that has a strong understanding of the history of the genre. The band is the brainchild of guitarists Steve Wray and John Slater, former members of ex-Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bailey’s band. A follow-up to the band’s highly acclaimed debut A New Shade of Black For The Soul, released in 2007 and produced by Andy Sneap (Killswitch Engage, Megadeth), Some Other Truth combines anthem-esque elements with melodic eccentricities, resulting in an antidote to the soulless and mundane music that litters the heavy rock scene these days.

• Accurately timed for his upcoming tour, Uri Caine releases Plastic Temptation with his Bedrock trio! • Features Zach Danziger, Tim Lefebvre, and gospel singer Barbara Walker.

Overview

Bedrock is comprised of Uri Caine, Zach Danziger, and Tim Lefebvre. The longserving Hammond B3 is, besides drum ‘n’ bass, the center of their sound. From wild improvisations and remixes to dance and house styles, the trio tinkers a groovy show in which gospel singer Barbara Walker performs in stirring voice.

Genre: Jazz Label: Winter & Winter CD: WTR 161 Price Code: S (SRP $18.99) Smartpak; Box Lot 20 Street Date: 2-9-10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Press Quotes

“If Uri Caine’s first Bedrock album was a warning shot across the bow, Shelf-Life is an outright broadside. The keyboard player’s 2001 trio record with drummer Zach Danziger and bassist Tim Lefebvre blended electric jazz with contemporary and neo-retro styles, heading adventurously into a no man’s land of beats, jams, and freaky madness … Depending on your personal tastes and breadth of exposure, the rapid and regular shifts in mood, style, and era on Shelf-Life may be energizing or disconcerting—probably a combination of the two. As for me, it all adds up to pure joy, in no small part due to the music’s unpredictability.” — All About Jazz

Citing Killing Joke, Death In June, March Violets, and The Cure as influences, Blessure Grave injects a pop sensibility into songs otherwise doomed to dreariness, creating an interesting mix of old and new, but dark all around. The music initially appears rather basic, but quickly reveals fully fleshed-out songs that are genuinely memorable just the way they are.

Press Quotes

“It’s hard to imagine Blessure Grave even wanting to get out of bed, let alone make music … they’re prolific and maudlin, and that dynamic combo seems like they should sound like Dead Can Dance, but no, thankfully, they do not.” — Vice

• First reissue of these rare recordings of the 10-yearold singer, originally made in 1986! Now on CD! • Includes the full recording and a 16-page booklet of notes, full-color photos, news clippings, and more. • Features detailed liner notes by the artist and others. • RIYL: Captain Beefheart, Bishop Perry Tillis, Bobb Trimble, Larry “Wild Man” Fischer. • In the mid-1980s, Human Skab was profiled in Sub Pop, Spin, Your Flesh, and other influential zines. • Full press mailing to magazines and blogs by Family Vineyard, with focus on children’s music sites. • Radio promotion by Chouette Promotion. • Ads with The Wire and Signal To Noise.

Overview

Human Skab was a 10-year old singer from Elma, Washington. Thunder Hips and Saddle Bags is a 1986 cassette recorded by Skab, neighborhood pals, and siblings. It was injected into the underground network of tape traders, zine scribes, college DJs, and freak seekers, who were universally bowled over by its bewildering and utterly poignant snapshot of the mid-1980s. Skab’s music—a battery including empty buckets, a garden rake, a $10 Martin guitar with three strings, a poorly-tuned upright piano, broken bottles, and a “Snake Mountain” microphone—is a response to He-Man cartoons, Twisted Sister, Ronald Reagan, the coolness of dinosaurs, the uncoolness of John Wayne, and commie-phobia. These rare recordings have never been reissued—or even made available outside of dusty personal collections—until now. This reissue includes the full Thunder Hips and Saddle Bags cassette, with 16-page booklet of liner notes by Human Skab, cousin Franky, and more—PLUS many full-color photographs and news clippings. As a bonus, the CD adds a 1987 radio interview with Skab.

“Well, there’s this 10-year old singer from Elma, Washington. He’s really cool. His mom calls him Travis but his real name is Human Skab. Picture this: the Skab zips around the living room shooting toy guns. He hits the family piano with his fists. He tries real hard to play guitar. He makes up songs about terrorism and radiation and throwing rocks at windows. Cool!” — Bruce Pavitt, Sub Pop Zine, 1986

Alan Licht & Loren Connors Into The Night Sky Genre: Experimental Label: Family Vineyard CD: FVR 75 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Digipak; Box Lot 35 Street Date: 2-23-10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

The sixth album from avant guitarists Alan Licht and Loren Connors, and the first since 2003’s In France. Since 1993 these New York City artists have evolved an instrumental dialogue merging shades of electric blues and minimalism. These two epic pieces (one from 1996, the other 2006), recorded live in concert, clearly show how far their desolate sound world grew over a decade of collaboration. The atmosphere conjured by the Licht-Connors duo is unmistakable—the ebb and flow of eloquently shaped feedback—while the harmonic patterns recall 20th-century classical music.

Cromagnon’s Cave Rock is the brainchild of two songwriters and a musician’s collective called “The Connecticut Tribe.” Unhinged, savage, and uniquely outof-time, Cave Rock surpasses even the most out-there psychedelia of its day and predicted the disjointed aural landscapes of Faust, the violent scuzz of Throbbing Gristle, and the lysergic rhythms of Sun City Girls. A true classic ’60s “freakout” record. Originally released in 1969 on ESP-Disk’.

Overview

Balmorhea’s previous album was intensely physical, exploring the freedom and isolation of settlers of an untamed frontier. By contrast, Constellations shifts focus to the cosmos and beyond, meditating solemnly on the mystical and metaphysical. The disarming simplicity of the tracks proves that Balmorhea doesn’t need dense arrangements full of 180-degree turns to craft deeply affecting compositions.

Victoria Lloyd, Chris Ross, and Ben Fargen founded Claire Voyant in Northern California in 1994. Ross and Fargen had been involved musically since childhood and, with the addition of Lloyd, the chain was complete. The trio yearned to create music as touching and emotionally charged as some of their favorite artists. They write most of the music collectively, and songwriting is still a process they find hard to explain. That elusiveness is the “power of music” in which the band believes so strongly. Claire Voyant can express light, darkness, beauty, and hope—a voyage that they hope is as healing to the listener as it is to each of them. Their 1995 self-titled debut received praise from fans and critics alike, but unfortunately went out of print several years later. Not wanting this masterpiece to fade into obscurity, Metropolis Records is proud to announce its re-release in February 2010.

If you were to take one thing away from their debut album, Seattle’s All Time High would want it to be this: Seattle rock is not dead! Formed in 2005, the men of All Time High are veterans of considerable pedigree. Having spent the last decade cutting their teeth playing in bands (VALIS, Kitty Kitty, Gardener) alongside some of the biggest and most recognizable names in the Northwest’s music scene—and having released albums on labels as notable as Sub Pop, Man’s Ruin, and Small Stone—All Time High aren’t content to rest on their laurels. Since their inception All Time High have been steadfast in the trenches, playing shows with the likes of Helios Creed/Chrome, Sound of Urchin, The Spores, Mos Generator, and The Valley. Their debut long-player, the aptly titled 12–song Friends in High Places, was recorded in an unadulterated 5-day session with legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino and features more than a few surprise guests.

Newly relocated to the Pacific Northwest and fresh off their recent US tour with Clem Snide, The Heligoats follow up the acclaimed End of All-Purpose EP with another weird stop for musical adventurer Chris Otepka. Teaming up with Chicago psych-folk band Ulysses S. Grant just long enough to have a few parties and interpret a record, they formed in Summer 2009. Live, the songs are dynamic and energetic, building sonic force around Otepka’s acoustic-based tunes and fleshing out the universe of this recording. And universe is apt; with each track its own little world, all 10 songs come together to take the listener out on wild safari.
