Powerful conceptual CD featuring Joseph Alessi and Andrea Tofanelli! From Italy’s super trombonist, composer, programmer, and producer—classical, jazz, blues, fusion, pop, and alternative combine to create a world-class musical of the seventh century Mayan prophecy for the year 2012. Known as Time’s Special Witness, Mayan prophet Pacal Votan left a universal message for future generations of an evolving Earth. Proclaiming, “If humanity wishes to save itself from biospheric destruction it must return to living in natural time,” he foretold of our accelerated technological society and the resulting damage of our collective divergence from Natural Law in exchange for materialist values. The compositions here were thought out for four “voices”: one trumpet, two tenor trombones, and one bass trombone. This core consists of four world famous artists: Joseph Alessi, Andrea Tofanelli, Justin Clark, and Nicola Ferro.

Rudens Turku, who has created a trio of compelling recital and chamber recordings for Avie, presents his first concerto recording for the label. He ingeniously pairs Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Piano with the early Sonata in F Major, bringing together two of the composer’s lesser-known works. In both, he is joined by his regular piano partner, Oliver Schnyder. The Double Concerto and F Major Sonata were written when Mendelssohn was in his 20s. The ambitious three-movement Sonata lay dormant after its first performances—probably due to the composer’s career demands—and wasn’t revived until 1953 when Yehudi Menuhin published the work for the first time. The Double Concerto displays the work of a mature musician; the sensitivity with which Mendelssohn balances the two instruments is masterful, and the orchestral writing marries brilliance with beauty. This unique coupling is a fitting tribute to the end of the Mendelssohn anniversary year.

To celebrate its 10th birthday with a wink, Alpha has decided to get totally involved in this special adventure, scrambling the boundaries between what is classical, and what is not. This album has little in common with Alpha’s usual collections, so it has been packaged in a unique, festive circular metal box.

L’Arpeggiata Christina Pluhar: conductor Lucilla Galeazzi: vocals Marco Beasley: vocals Alfio Antico: percussion 17 tarantellas by various composers, many anonymous Celebrating its 10th anniversary year with a splash (and starting its second decade auspiciously), Alpha offers a mythical production for the 2010 catalog CD! Conducted by Christina Pluhar, magician of sound colors, the musicians of L’Arpeggiata recreate the mysterious universe of the Tarantella, the only remedy against the lethal bite of the tarantula. Halfway between traditional and baroque music, this recording owes its success to the exceptional commitment of the vocal soloists, Lucilla Galeazzi and Marco Beasley, as well as to the ‘electric’ participation of the Sicilian percussionist Alfio Antico. Includes a 2010 paper catalog of the Alpha collection and a special bonus track: the cover of Madonna’s “Hung Up” from Alpha 888, the Encores CD.

The Complete Rags, Marches & Waltzes (3 CDs)
The story of Scott Joplin and his ragtime is one of happiness and melancholy, aspirations achieved and hopes dashed. It is about the international success of one seminal rag piece, and about the long-overdue revival of interest in the music.
A Tribute to Andrés Segovia
Segovia’s charisma and unique poetic gifts helped to re-establish the guitar as a “serious” instrument, and proved it capable of realizing a repertoire of polyphonic art music spanning five centuries.

The instrument played here is one of three surviving single-brassstrung harpsichords made by Boni around 1619. It is a fascinating probability that Frescobaldi performed on this harpsichord.
Ernesto Halffter was a painstaking composer who wrote mainly orchestral, choral, chamber, and piano music, drawing upon the rich traditions of Spanish folk music.

Red Priest Recordings Angela East: cello J.S. BACH: 6 Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, BWV 1007–1012 Bach’s Cello Suites, for most cellists, represent a lifetime’s work and thought. Over the years, certain images have come to mind, so Angela East decided to reflect these in the booklet. The idea of combining music with images has existed since the time of Aristotle, when he wrote De Sensu, which is about combining the two areas of perception. Newton divided the color spectrum over seven parts of the scale and various people have devised “color organs” that project light during performances of particular works, such as Scriabin’s Prométhée: le poème du feu. Angela East’s visual concept is based on texture and dimension as well as the keys, and she relates these keys to certain colors—for example, the yellow of E flat major in the desert picture and the black of C minor in the background of the spider’s web. It is her hope that these images will enhance the listener’s enjoyment of the music and give insight into her interpretation of these suites.

Russian Generations 2
After the successful release of part one in December 2008, the Ruysdael Quartet continues its journey with part two of the Russian Generations series. The new recording features second string quartets by Tchaikovsky as well as both Sergei and Gabriel Prokofiev. Tchaikovsky’s second quartet is a seldom-performed masterpiece, with one of the most intensely personal slow movements the composer ever wrote. This is juxtaposed with Sergei Prokofiev’s Op. 92, an exhilarating dance-like piece based on Kabardinian folk tunes. Gabriel Prokofiev’s second quartet, like its predecessor, is a thrilling work with a gripping rhythmic drive. But here the instruments are stretched even further to the extremes of their capabilities, creating a fascinating sound world.

The group doesn’t wish to comply with the current opinion that Baroque music should be played with as few players as possible—rather, its members favor a richer, more robust sound!

These fantastic instruments were built in the 17th century by renowned carillon builders François and Pieter Hemony. The exceptional range of the Cathedral carillon, with its extra low B flat and G, is exploited extensively in the selection from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas; this piece lasts a good 20 minutes and is one of the most important works on the CD.

During his time in royal service, no less than four different monarchs sat on the throne. Music was his means of expression—his real secret garden—and in this, he had no peer. Dominating 50 years of Tudor musical life, Tallis was capable of the most staggering feats of technical virtuosity as well as the simplest and most elegant means of expressing sadness and joy.

Release Date: February 9, 2010 Odhecaton Paolo Da Col: director Selections from Renaissance singer-composers of Picardy Between about 1400 and 1550, musical life in Europe was dominated by five generations of musicians born and formed in a well-defined geographical area generally described by musicologists as FrancoFlemish. From this area emanated the overwhelming majority of the musical elite of the Renaissance—illustrious composers and musicians, recruited at great expense by wealthy patrons across Europe. The southern part of this area, Picardy, was a rich pool of talented singers and composers. The cathedral and collegial churches of Amiens alongside the Picard church chapters pursued a general musical education for choirboys who, if they showed any natural musical talent, could become professional musicians, either in their churches or by being recruited to the private chapels of the grandest of European rulers. With five composers from different generations, and of varying status, this program of religious music conveys a relatively comprehensive survey of what 16th century musical life in the churches of one of the most musically well-endowed French provinces might have been.

We know very little about Joseph Touchemoulin, a renowned violinist and chapel master to the princely courts of Bonn and Regensburg for more than 50 years—and one of the few 18th century French composers to have enjoyed a career outside France. Touchemoulin’s apprenticeship was largely accomplished at Padua, where he became a pupil of the great violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini. This is the source of the exuberant Italian idiom which characterizes his work, and which he would later combine with the delicacy and ease of the German tradition. This first recording of Touchemoulin on period instruments, or on authentic copies, presents three of the composer’s concertos and two of his symphonies—charming, finely made music that combines Italian influences with the current tastes of the Mannheim school.

Léon Berben: harpsichord, organ J.S. BACH: Complete keyboard toccatas Among his early keyboard works, the Prelude, the Toccata, and the Fantasy represent a type of composition that allowed Johann Sebastian Bach to approach the limits of keyboard playing outside a strict formal framework. This recording by Léon Berben displays, in an impressive manner, the virtuosity that liberation from form allows. The early keyboard toccatas are some of the most mysterious and most fascinating of Bach’s works—they don’t exhibit any of the characteristics of his later, more mature compositions.

Giuliano Sommerhalder: trumpet New Philharmonic Orchestra of Westphalia Heiko Mathias Förster: conductor Trumpet works by Peskin, Brandt, Cords, Höhne & Böhme In 1997, at the age of twelve, Giuliano Sommerhalder traveled to Moscow from his mountain village of Astano in Ticino to take part in the International Trumpet Competition of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He won it, but set even greater store by the fact that the “living legends” among Russian trumpeters heard him and offered him their friendship. Timofei Dokschitzer, Venyamin Margolin, Yury Usov, and others saw in him a potential champion of their great tradition. Late-night discussions around kitchen tables in Moscow caused an ambitious plan to form in the boy’s mind. Then, eleven years later, Sommerhalder realized that ambition and recorded the most important and masterful of the few original trumpet concertos of the late and neo-Romantic eras in their long-lost orchestral versions. With only one exception, these are all world premiere recordings and prove that interesting and extremely virtuosic Romantic original works for the trumpet do exist!

Jesús Torres (born in Saragossa, 1965) is one of the key figures in a very talented generation of Spanish composers who have made a significant contribution to the further development of music in Europe. While they share neither a style nor an ideational background, they do share their point of departure: artistically speaking, they are all “grandchildren” of the great innovators of the post-war period; they came to music after the avant-garde had already gained a permanent, emphatic foothold at the academies—and begun their subsequent march into aesthetic isolation. In order to break free from this, Torres and his colleagues set off on highly individual and divergent musical paths that, viewed as a whole, still set a remarkable example.
