Founded by composer Michel van der Aa in 2010, Disquiet Media is a multimedia label that embraces unfurling technologies in a wide spectrum of the arts. Based in Amsterdam, it focuses on compositions and music-theatre works that are firmly rooted in 21st-century life. Combining staging, film images, and soundtracks, composer and director Van der Aa pushes the boundaries of all media. Drawing on a unique layered vocabulary, his music has an expressive power and range that place him firmly in the vanguard of new music. The catalogue will initially center on Van der Aa’s work; later it will extend to other like-minded artists.

In 2000, pianist Christine Rayner developed breast cancer. She has recently marked the 10th anniversary of her recovery by giving piano recitals of music by Ludovico Einaudi in aid of cancer charities. Avie introduces the Valentin Berlinsky Quartet, a Zurich-based international foursome that chose its name to honor the legendary founding cellist of the Borodin Quartet. The group received the blessing for their attribution from the cellist’s daughter, pianist Ludmila Berlinskaia, with whom they frequently perform. Mauricio Kagel (1931–2008), one of the great composers of the 20th century, was born in Argentina but left that country to settle in Germany in 1957. However, his adventurous music remained an inspiration to a number of forward-thinking Argentinean musicians. In 2006, he returned to Buenos Aires for a festival in which he directed a major concert by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, and also worked with the young Ensemble Süden. Filmmaker Gastón Solnicki was on hand to capture Kagel’s visit on film, and this documentary chronicles the composer’s efforts to work directly with the musicians as well as reflecting the circumstances of modern music in Argentina. Throughout the first half of the 18th century many French composers ventured into the composition of Cantatas, creating a vast repertoire of approximately 800 works in this particular genre. This is an extremely important album—not only does it contain three world premiere recordings, but the Vaughan Williams Fantasia has excited and intrigued admirers of the composer and his works the world over. RVW composed the work, his first attempt at writing for the orchestra, in 1896 and revised it twice before putting it aside in 1904. His widow Ursula initially withdrew it, along with other youthful works of the composer, but later changed her mind and reinstated it (she may have well wished to have his youthful works reappraised in the light of the composer’s later maturity). The Fantasia is interesting in that it already has the hallmarks of his later writing style, and is a precursor of the Sea Symphony and the Tallis Fantasia. The writing for the soloist is not at all easy, and requires someone with Mark Bebbington’s effortless virtuosity to bring it off!

The premiere of the opera was expected at the Stanislavsky Musical Theatre in Summer 1941, but World War II did not let it happen. The first performance took place as late as November 1946, at the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad, and received acclaim from critics and audiences alike. The opera, conducted by Kamil Abdullayev, was recorded by Firma Melodiya in 1963 and awarded an André Messager prize in 1967.
