“The 30-year-old Augustin Hadelich may be the best violinist you’ve never heard of. His album pairing two seemingly dissimilar concertos — one classic, one contemporary — by Jean Sibelius and Thomas Adès puts his shimmering tone and laser-like intonation on magnificent display. Hadelich is increasingly viewed as one of today’s top violinists — remarkable considering that after an accident at age 15 he was told he may never play again. Hadelich circles and swoops stratospherically high above a turbulent orchestra in the opening of Adès’ concerto ‘Concentric Paths,’ from 2005. It’s a thrilling tightrope act danced by a young master.” — Tom Huizenga

Bach’s “48,” The Well-Tempered Clavier (AVR 2299), as well as Bach’s Goldberg Variations (AVR 2235) and Mozart’s Piano Sonatas (AVR 2209), Daniel-Ben Pienaar turns to arguably the most revered body of works in the piano repertory, Beethoven’s “32.” Training his sharp intellect and formidable technique on this touchstone of classical canons, Pienaar’s interpretations are altogether as stimulating as they are engaging. Benjamin Hochman: piano BRAHMS: Handel Variations • KNUSSEN: Variations for Piano • BERIO: Cinque Variazioni • BENJAMIN: Meditation on Haydn’s Name • LIEBERSON: Piano Variations “Excellent and inquisitive … vibrant and stylish.” — New York Times (for AVR 2281) Pianist Benjamin Hochman follows his critically acclaimed AVIE debut Homage to Schubert (AVR 2281), which paired two sonatas by the 19thcentury master with modern-day tributes by Kurtág and Widmann, with a like-minded program centered on the age-old musical form of variations. At the heart of the album is the Handel Variations by Brahms, a grand master of the art form. The four shorter Piano Variations on this recording are by major composers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries: Oliver Knussen, Luciano Berio, George Benjamin, and Peter Lieberson. Each composition is a piece of great beauty, but with results that are strikingly diverse. Advertising in Gramophone, BBC Music, International Piano, and Pianist. Priority for Review in classical press and specialty media such as International Piano and Pianist. E-Blast to AVIE mailing list (c. 6,000).

KAIROS Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra Lucerne Festival Academy Ensemble Sylvain Cambreling: conductor Matthias Hermann: conductor LACHENMANN: Schreiben • Double (Grido II) It is all too easy to dismiss the work of Lachenmann as “musica negativa,” in the manner that term was used by Hans Werner Henze in his attack on the composer. Lachenmann’s music forces the listener to confront and question their ingrained expectations from, and responses to, music in an attempt to extend and further illuminate one’s powers of perception. Schreiben, for orchestra, and Double (Grido II), the string orchestra version of his third string quartet, are perfect examples of Lachenmann’s approach to musical material and his idea of music.

In each of her works she poses the question anew: what is the aesthetic foundation of a sonic artwork, and what can it achieve? The central question is always as follows: under what circumstances, and by what means, can music be presented as a valid contemporary art form?

Well-known in her own country, she has also begun to find international recognition, which this release can only help. A concert pianist and teacher at the conservatory of Luxembourg, Koster’s first compositions were French songs. In addition, her oeuvre includes choir music, a series of pieces for piano or orchestra, stage works, and the operetta An der Schwemm (“At the baths”).

ABC Classics Simon Tedeschi: piano The Queensland Orchestra Richard Bonynge: conductor TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23 • GRIEG: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16 This release couples Australia’s most gifted young pianist, Simon Tedeschi, with one of the world’s most legendary conductors, Richard Bonynge. Together, the two have recorded two of the most-recognized piano concertos of all time! Two of the best-known pieces in the Romantic repertoire, this very special recording explores the emotional power, frankness, and force of these popular works. Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto was completed in seven weeks, and was championed by the great virtuoso Nikolai Rubinstein. The work contains some of his most melodic writing, and is noted for its boldness and emotion. From the famous opening chords of the Grieg Piano Concerto to the spirited dance of the finale, the influence of Norwegian folk music can be heard throughout. The idyllic character of the concerto is a poignant tribute to the happiness Grieg was experiencing at the time in his personal life.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Jeffery Tate: conductor MENDELSSOHN: Overture: The Hebrides • ELGAR: Symphony No. 1 in A flat major, Op. 55 These live recordings from Jeffrey Tate and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra put the listener in the best seat in the house! The recorded sound is exceptional, with Melbourne’s Hamer Hall clearly suiting the large symphonic resources deployed here. This is the first release in a series called “MSO Live,” and first impressions would indicate that it will be a series to watch. Conductor Jeffrey Tate is no stranger to Australia, having conducted there on many occasions, most notably his acclaimed Wagner Ring cycle in 1998. Tate’s approach to the Hebrides Overture allows the gorgeous themes to unfold, expand, and develop in a leisurely fashion. Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 is a richly considered and spacious reading, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra more than capable of expressing Elgar’s virtuosic orchestration, changes of mood, and dynamic flow of ideas.

Li-Wei Qin first recorded for ABC Classics 20 years ago in 1994, after receiving first prize in Australia’s Young Performer of the Year in 1993. This new recording reveals a performance with musical maturity in abundance, with Li-Wei fully evoking the sadness of compassion and yearning in Elgar’s writing.

The 1500s witnessed an unprecedented musical flourishing within the German Empire, the diverse mosaic of medieval traditions providing the perfect breeding ground. This album presents the vocal works that were the jewel in this cultural crown: soaring polyphony composed for the most important chapels and courts of the day, alongside bawdy ballads to entertain in banquet halls and private chambers, blending the high art Flemish school with the sensuous freedom of the Italian style.

CRD Records London Oratory Choir Thames Chamber Orchestra, London John Hoban: conductor VALLS: Mass “Scala Aretina” Little is known of Francisco Valls prior to his 1696 appointment as joint chapelmaster at Barcelona Cathedral, but the award of such an important and lucrative post shows that Valls already enjoyed a considerable reputation. The Mass “Scala Aretina” was first performed in 1702, and was something of a cause celebre in its day, as it contradicted the then-acceptable rules of harmony. The original full score is lost, and the parts survive in one set only. The first performance in modern times was by the artists featured on this CD, at the Barcelona International Music Festival in October 1978.

ICSM Records Ivo Varbanov: piano BEETHOVEN: Bagatelles, Op. 126 • SCHUMANN: Gesänge der Frühe (Songs of Dawn), Op. 133 • BRAHMS: The Chorale Preludes, Op. 122 (trans. by Busoni) Beethoven’s Bagatelles, written three years before his death, were considered by the composer the best things of their kind that he had done, a true cycle of miniatures. Schumann’s Morning Songs, with their visionary intimacy inspired by the great German poet Friedrich Hölderlin, were written just a few months before Schumann’s tragic attempt to drown himself in the Rhine, due to his mental illness; his content is in stark contrast to his early piano works. As for Brahms’ Chorale Preludes, written after the death of his beloved Clara Schumann, they are works of lonely self-communing and consolation, the ultimate fruit of Brahms’ lifetime immersion in early music. In these rarely performed transcriptions, Busoni has re-imagined them in the style of Brahms’ own late piano pieces.

Fiammetta Tarli: piano SCHUBERT: Moments musicaux D. 780, Op. 94 • SCHUMANN: Phantasiestücke, Op. 12 • SCHOENBERG: Sechs kleine Klavierstücke, Op. 19 This recording’s title, Freedom, reflects the disc’s exploration of what composers produced when they did not start with a codified musical form but rather with a poetic idea. In this thought-provoking program, both Schubert and Schumann’s cycles show powers of evocation and characterization at their height, while in Schoenberg’s music, pared back beyond its essentials, we catch a glimpse into the elements of a psychological crisis. Fiammetta Tarli’s playing reveals details of the music unheard before, and in such central repertoire that’s quite an achievement; especially impressive is the sense of buoyant fun that she found in Schoenberg’s short piano pieces, fun being seldom associated to Schoenberg’s music.

They might both have improvised on a given theme, or played together on two pianos. And, given the custom of the day, each would very probably have performed something the other had written. Had that happened, the results might not have been that far removed from what we hear on this recording: a journey towards an imaginary encounter made reality by the exceptional vision and artistry of Josep Colom. The album leads us gradually from the dazzling luminosity of the first works towards a gathering darkness, and it doesn’t seem to matter much who wrote which piece: along the way Mozart often turns into Chopin, and vice versa.

The war inspired Elgar to write some of his most moving pages of music, which he dedicated “To the memory of our glorious men.” The Philharmonia Orchestra, under the baton of John Wilson, and the London Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Simon Halsey, bring these pages to life in the most inspiring way. Another “plus” is the premiere recording of Elgar’s Complete Incidental Music to Binyon’s Play Arthur, edited and conducted here by Ben Palmer and his Orchestra of St Paul’s.

When encountering a composer’s work for the first time, it’s a perfectly natural response to compare it to music we already know. We all do it, and this instinct to relate the new to the familiar can help us begin to understand new musical languages and idioms. However, if we really want to come to grips with new voices, to fully understand what we’re hearing and how it’s affecting us, it’s important to move past reacting to music in terms of what it is like, and to move on to engaging with what it is.

Perhaps the most well-known direct comparison between both the Brahms and Bruch violin concertos comes from Hans von Bülow, who commented that while Bruch had written a concerto for the violin, Brahms had composed one against it. And while this is perhaps a little harsh toward Brahms, one can see von Bülow’s point: Bruch uses the orchestra to support his soloist, while Brahms attempts to treat both soloist and orchestra as equals. Comparisons aside, both concertos are towering examples of the genre that are, and will remain, firmly established staples of concerto repertoire.

French organ music from the period of Louis XIV to the Revolution has always held fascination for performers and listeners alike. The kaleidoscope of colors, the rich and varied styles, and the sheer exuberance of the music never fail to captivate. Yet, performance practice of this music has never been fully understood. David Ponsford has spent much of his career studying this repertoire, resulting in his book French Organ Music in the Reign of Louis XIV (Cambridge University Press, 2011). This series of recordings, on the most important historical organs in France, is therefore the fruit of many years of research by a seasoned performer whose aim is to combine technical brilliance with intellectual understanding, to bring the music alive with authority and meaning.

Douglas LILBURN

Donald Maurice: viola/Richard Mapp: piano

LILBURN: Salutes to Seven Poets • ENESCU: Sonata in the Romanian Folk Character • PIGOVAT: Sonata for viola and piano

LILBURN: Sonata for violin and piano • Allegro Concertante • Sonata in E flat • Sonata in C

Douglas Lilburn translates into music the sentiments of seven New Zealand poets, each expressing the pioneering experiences of European settlers in the colony. In the hands of these three master composers, the essence of cultural heritage is raised to something higher than nationhood.

Prominent New Zealand musicians Justine Cormack and Michael Houstoun present Lilburn’s three Sonatas for violin and piano as well as the sparkling Allegro Concertante, written between 1942 and 1950 (with some later revisions), the fruitful period when he wrote his Aotearoa Overture and other well-known works.

John Jenkins was a virtuoso of the lute and the viola da gamba, a prolific composer with over 800 works, almost completely instrumental and preserved in manuscript. The context of circulation of his music was that of private societies, thus copies made by hand and preserved in family archives.

Stradivarius Fabio SELVAFIORITA Fleurs d’X, Quaderni I-II-III Elena Càsoli: guitar SELVAFIORITA: Fleurs d’X, Quaderni I-II-III A series of short (and very short) pieces for solo guitar, written during the summers from 2007 to 2012. This corpus of musical scraps, today collected into three notebooks, registers sudden déja vus, elaborates intuitions grabbed in fortuitous moments, and returns echoes of a musical memory, always in balance between enchant and dream, fracture and distance. The motivation for this recording came to Janice Minor upon a study of her inspiring mentors and teachers, notably Ben Armato, clarinetist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for 45 years. Ben compiled the solos in the “Recital Clarinetist,” published by Carl Fisher, to provide a resource of clarinet repertoire for students of the clarinet. This recording serves two purposes: the first is to provide audio recordings (a companion to the published music) of the repertoire for pedagogical learning, the second is a tribute to Ben Armato, a distinguished musician, teacher, and mentor.

In the years that followed, with constant exposure to dampness and draft, the organ became virtually unplayable. In 2012, an agreement was reached regarding the restoration of the organ, and by May 2014 it had been restored to its original splendor.

Phaedra 5 Beaufort Brussels Woodwind Quintet/Baudoin Giaux: flute/Bram Nolf: oboe/Jean-Michel Charlier: clarinet/Luc Loubry: bassoon/Ivo Hadermann: horn/Hans Ryckelynck: piano JONGEN: Rhapsodie, Op. 70 for woodwind quintet and piano • Lied for horn and piano • Méditation, Op. 21 for English horn and piano • Deux Pièces, Op. 98 • Danse lente, Op. 54 bis • Concerto, Op. 124 In spite of Joseph Jongen’s admiration for Debussy and Ravel — their rich tone colors and daring harmonies strongly appealed to him — his musical style continued that of the school of César Franck. All of his compositions are suffused with warm, glowing intensity, alternately enthusiastic and meditative, reflective and exuberant, playful and tender, and always fascinating. Jongen is and remains a dyed-in-the-wool late romanticist: honest, open, and passionate. However, his rich and subtle orchestral colors betray both the influence of impressionism and the organist’s craft.

Nikolaas Kende: piano BRAHMS: Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5 • Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann, Op. 9 Clara Schumann wrote in her diary: “A visit by Brahms. There is one that comes as if sent by God. He played us sonatas, scherzos, etc., all showing exuberant imagination, depth of feeling and mastery of form. Robert said he could not tell him to leave something out of or to add to his music.” Brahms’ Third Piano Sonata (1853) is a work of symphonic proportions, his largest for piano solo, and indeed his last piano sonata. It is a passionate piece of music, masterfully combining a strict classical sonata structure with romantic spirit and content. The Variations on a Theme of Schumann (1854) are among the most satisfying and successful works of the young Brahms, and they are a moving homage to his mentor and to Clara.

Hendrik Schnöke, spiritus rector of the diX ensemble, has created the arrangements. Covering the spectrum, from a fantasy on themes of Puccini’s opera “Tosca” to the first movement of Bach’s “Italian Concerto,” the repertoire is as diverting as it is demanding.

Colin Mawby is one of today’s most successful composers of sacred choral music. The former music director of Westminster Cathedral, and founder of a new Irish tradition of chant, is highly estimated for his sonority, influenced by the Gregorian school. Challenging the interpreters, but nevertheless featuring the viability within liturgical practice, the musician has created an incredibly huge oeuvre. This CD gives an impression of this musical richness and variety, presenting two mass compositions as well as several psalm compositions and other sacred chants.
