• David S. Ware’s first new studio recording in almost six years, and his first with a new working group since his highly esteemed quartet disbanded. • Features the stellar, singular guitar voice of Joe Morris as well as fellow master musicians William Parker and Warren Smith. • Includes a whole new set of compositions developed specifically for this new group, plus one re-interpolation of Ware’s own “Antidromic.” • Service/promotion to national press, e-media, and targeted regional press by Improvised Communications. • Service/promotion to college/non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with All About Jazz-New York, Signal To Noise, Wax Poetics, and Point of Departure.

Overview The new work from master musician David S. Ware arrives! Shakti is Ware’s first new studio recording in almost six years, and his first with a new group since his highly esteemed quartet disbanded. The quartet’s final performance was documented on Renunciation. Even before that album was released, Ware was developing a new group concept. In July 2007, this group—featuring guitarist Joe Morris—made its live debut at the Iridium in NYC. The membership was solidified with the addition of long-time musical compatriot William Parker on bass and fellow master musician Warren Smith on drums. A European tour in November 2007 followed, and a studio session was booked for May 2008, resulting in the luminous Shakti. Working with musicians who fully understand the profound ebb and flow of his music, and who can trace the tendrils thereof as close to infinity as human fingers allow, Ware presents five new compositions and a re-interpolation of his own “Antidromic,” which first appeared on Wisdom of Uncertainty.

“This is jazz that swallows all aesthetic distinctions.” — Village Voice

J.TILLMAN

Press Quotes

VACILANDO TERRITORY BLUES

“Languid, sadly beautiful portraits of love and life on the margins with the moody depth of Nick Drake and the country-influenced textures of Ryan Adams.” — All Music Guide “A GvsB favorite … fans of Drake or Oldham would be wise to check him out.” — Gorilla vs. Bear “Intimate, confessional …[a] lovely, late-night album.” — Mojo

Selling Points • Josh Tillman is also a member of Fleet Foxes, and many of the songs here include the fine musicianship of fellow Fleet Foxes members Christian Wargo and Casey Wescott. • Radio promotion will be handled in-house by Western Vinyl. • Full national press campaign will be handled in-house by Western Vinyl. • Digital press/promotion will be handled by IODA and Western Vinyl. • Ads with Pitchfork, Insound, and Waterloo.

Overview Since 2004, J. Tillman has quietly been releasing records that have been, for the most part, unheard—some were of limited quantity, some were mostly available in Europe. The borderline-alienating starkness and welllived-in narratives of his first two records, I Will Return and Long May You Run, J. Tillman (released in limited runs of 150) endeared him to fans and drew comparisons to Nick Drake, Will Oldham, and Jason Molina. In 2006, after three months in Europe touring on his third and most accessible album Minor Works, Tillman recorded his fourth collection of songs at home with his brother and roommate. Cancer and Delirium struck a perfect balance between the intimacies of his earlier releases and the nuanced, melodic sense of Minor Works. Each song was imbued with the same strikingly disconsolate singing and devastatingly poignant prose that Tillman is known for, and was accented with some of his most gorgeous, spare arrangements. Vacilando Territory Blues, Tillman’s fifth album and first with Austin’s Western Vinyl, came as the result of three different recording attempts in 2008. The push and pull of this record veers sharply from the tone of Tillman’s previous releases, which for the most part adhere to a singular mood and stylistic execution. Sacrificing a stylized album, the breadth of Tillman’s abilities as a songwriter emerge in an array of musical personalities bound by his lyrical existential dread and economical arrangements. In 2008, Tillman joined Fleet Foxes, a Seattle band of longtime friends and musical collaborators. Casey Wescott and Christian Wargo both appear on VTB, along with several regular contributors who were willing to adapt to idiosyncratic recording obstructions. Vacilando Territory Blues is far and away Tillman’s most collaborative effort, and the most striking moments here are those seemingly stumbled upon, without resorting to second-takes or microphone re-adjustment. This album casts a strange perspective on what people have come to expect from Tillman’s music, but these songs, though oddly untethered, reveal the process of someone coming to terms with the prospect of making music in the void.

Press Quotes “A powerful heavy rock unit, which is influenced by Kyuss and QOTSA without losing their very own sound … a must-have for every fan of modern heavy rock.” — Cosmic Lava “The earthshaking tones of Sweden’s Dozer are back with full force on the quartet’s most recent release, the 10-track Through the Eyes of Heathens. Fleshing out their Hessian blend of stoner rock with a plethora of hard-rock histrionics and desert-rock debauchery, songs like ‘Blood Undone’ and the groove-laden ‘Man of Fire’ contain grungy nuances and garage rock’s fuzziness, which further accentuate the band’s already mammoth sound.” — Skratch “Alright! My Swedish boys are back with another album of pure rock fury, to quote a Clutch album. Dozer has been doing their thing for 10 years [and] several albums later, Dozer is showing why they are still around. If you are one to hop into your vintage classic car and just go for a ride, this band will be your copilot, never steering you wrong.” — Zero Magazine

Selling Points • Guest vocals on “Empire’s End” and “Two Coins For Eyes” by Neil Fallon (Clutch). • Dozer will tour North America in 2009. • Through the Eyes of Heathens has been a very strong performer in the Small Stone catalog. • Large fan base in the underground rock community. • Songs have been featured on Fuel TV, MTV (Viva La Bam, Homewrecker), and FX’s Damages as well as various video games including American Chopper, 2K Hockey, and Monster Garage. • Copies to retail, press, digital media, college radio, and specialty rock programs.

Overview “Triskaidekaphobia” is a noun meaning “an irrational fear of the number 13.” Those among us that cling to superstitions dread the intersection of the number 13 with the unluckiest day of the week, Friday. So, it’s fitting that in their 13th year Sweden’s Dozer should descend upon us like a vampire bat to unleash their darkest and heaviest collection of tracks to date. Beyond Colossal is rock ‘n’ roll crafted in the finest traditions of Black Sabbath and bathed in a sublime blanket of Swedish winter sunlight. With the release of their fifth full-length album, these sons of Sweden seem poised to teach the underground a lesson or two about what rock ‘n’ roll is all about. Recorded between Studios 301 in Stockholm and Rockhuset Studios in their hometown of Borlänge, Beyond Colossal oozes with the bleakness and beauty of the landscape. One can almost feel the sub-arctic winter cold that forces Tommi Holappa’s fingers to move with superhuman speed, alternating between beerchugging riffs and lightning solos. Of course a tour is in the works, and anyone who has ever seen Dozer live will tell you this band always gives 110%. With a resume of live shows that reads like a “who’s who” of rawk’s newest and greatest (Mastodon, Rollins Band, Hellacopters, Clutch, Unida), the men of Dozer have proved one fact over and over again: they are not to be missed. Press Quotes “[A] massive blend of riff-centric heavy rock … totally enjoyable and real good fun.” — Cosmic Lava

Selling Points • Produced by Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Pelican, Scissorfight). • Features ex-members of Milligram and Lamont. • Hackman performed at CMJ 2008 and SXSW 2007, and will appear at SXSW 2009. • Copies to retail, press, college radio, and specialty rock shows.

Overview Formed in Boston in 2005 by refugees from Milligram and Lamont, Hackman exploded onto the local scene like a dump truck full of bricks and dynamite. The tale expanded in 2007 with the release of their debut full-length The New Normal, which garnered praise far and wide. After acquiring a new drummer, the band had to figure out how to follow up such a smashing debut, and the answer is Enterprises: 10 new songs recorded straight to glorious 2” tape and utilizing more non-standard tunings than any sludge rock band should know. Recorded with Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Pelican, Scissorfight) at his Translator Audio studio, the men of Hackman decided that staying the course was their best bet. Over 60+ minutes, Hackman carve out riff after spine-tingling riff of aural ecstasy with their guitars. The vocals, just as minimal as on the debut, help to showcase some of the most earth-rattling rhythms of the past decade.

Press Quotes “Beautiful stuff, and it’s good to know that Ranelin is still at work even now. Essential.” — BBC “While he started out as a Motown session player, trombonist Phil Ranelin left that behind in the ’70s, instead pursuing a style that blended post-Coltrane post bop with Afro-Cuban rhythms and harmonies. With Inspiration, Ranelin delivers an album firmly planted in these traditions, paying tribute to a number of his influences and past collaborators including Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver, Eric Dolphy, and of course, Coltrane.” — All About Jazz “Phil Ranelin was responsible for some of the deepest and funkiest jazz of the seventies … this radical trombonist shows his inspiration is still alive whilst blowing as hard as he did when Vibes from the Tribe first dropped back in 1975.” — Straight No Chaser “Ranelin is an unsung trombone hero.” — XLR8R

nail welcomes The SYCAMORE CLUB to its roster! The Sycamore Club is the new label set up and run by multi-instrumentalist, DJ, and Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek as a vehicle for his solo work, released under the name Roses Kings Castles.

Press Quotes “Through his Roses Kings Castles project [Babyshambles] sticksman Adam Ficek shows an ear for melody that the likes of Belle & Sebastian would smash up a tea party for.” — NME

Selling Points • Adam Ficek is the drummer in Babyshambles. • CD cover will be stickered with the Babyshambles logo.

Overview Musician and DJ Adam Ficek is most commonly known to the general public for his day job as drummer in Babyshambles. As a member of the band fronted by Pete Doherty, Ficek has seen the best and worst of the music industry. What many people don’t know is that he is a blistering artistic talent in his own right. Roses Kings Castles is the moniker under which Ficek performs and records his own unique catalogue of quixotic, chiming, and blissfully astute acoustic pop songs. Lost somewhere between Belle & Sebastian’s pastoral warmth and the hallucinatory six-string invocations of Syd Barrett, a typical Roses Kings Castles track is buoyed by the finest elements of classic British songwriting—by turns wry, beautiful, and bizarre.

Press Quotes “Last year this Portland Ore. tinkerer released Ceiling Songs, an enticing homemade album that used short sounds to create long ones. Flickering snippets of instruments overlap and accumulate to create restless but mellow collages that sound vaguely nostalgic.” — New York Times

Overview Ethan Rose’s work reflects his interests in old technologies, new sounds, and the restless exploration of musical form. Drawing from his interests in musique concrète, chance operations, and American minimalism, Rose creates shifting sound environments that merge the old with the new. Much of his recent work has centered on instruments from eras long past, including music boxes, player pianos, carillons, and theater organs. However, he is interested in pulling new sounds and ideas out of these antiquated devices rather than treating them with a sense of preservation. By bringing a carefully detailed sense of arrangement to his music, Rose’s pieces transport the close listener to a warm and unusual place.

Press Quotes “Connors ... makes music that pulls aged, cloudy film strips from minds, playing them at a tempo and in a setting he semaphores with six strings. These two nice Catholic boys met at the crossroads each night during a 1997 European tour. By this time Jim O’Rourke had already reissued Loren Connors’ seminal heartbreak album In Pittsburgh on his Dexter’s Cigar label, and produced Hoffman Estates, the guitarist’s big-band mash-up with Alan Licht. Together, they unravel slow motion ghost blues across three extended pieces that evolve from Connors’ Martian style to O’Rourke’s thundering, feedback-splattered lead grooves. Since 1997, the New Zealand artist has recorded and performed as Lovely Midget, releasing albums on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! and Corpus Hermeticum as well as the Fakerie CD for Family Vineyard in 2003. This new release is a series of aural sculptures digitally shaped for DVD; an image of seven light sources shining out of the black, synchronized with sound passing through seven shifting passages. The images offer an aid for listeners to immerse themselves in the sound. The melodic gesture of the music is minimized, becoming more like a trace of a melody. Sounds are clustered like stars in the sky, crystalline structures, crystal systems, patterns of cells, and white light that references Francois Bayle, Pauline Oliveros, Elanie Radigue, and the natural world.

Overview Carving a musical niche can be tough these days, but The Delicious have managed to find a loophole, pursuing a unique, passionate vision while balancing convention and innovation—imagine the propulsive punch of early Dismemberment Plan or Shudder to Think, or perhaps your favorite math rock bred with the wordplay of They Might Be Giants. Now, the band’s debut full-length sees reissue with the help of Joyful Noise and Decimal Records. Overview The new LSD March album Under Milk Wood is their first full-length since 2007’s Constellation of Tragedy. With grace (in the rock sense), style, humor, and the perfect touch of heavy riffage, this tremendously unique and original recording is a classic of the new Japanese underground. Recorded at Black Snowflake Studios, Under Milk Wood is a fascinating, ghostly rock album featuring Takahashi Ikuro’s drumming. It isn’t until midway through the record that the heavy riffage begins, though it is slowly buried beneath the white blizzard blanket that is the remainder of the album. Much critical praise awaits this fine album, and it’s likely to become your favorite too. Photographs by Abe Maki and layout by Darryl Norsen.

Overview Hide your sorrow and cover your eyes. Maninkari continues to dwell in medieval alchemy, delivering yet another organic instrumental voyage. A ritual psychedelic cleansing that plays like a chapter of a forgotten esoteric book, obscure yet spiced with cinematic romance and blood drama. Stretched strings, metal clatter, bells, and chains form an eerie, trance-inducing carpet that drags the listener into a radiant sea of darkness. Hypnotic minimalism for folks that dig holes listening to Pelt, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Henry Flynt, The Necks, and Nurse With Wound.

Kentucky Nightmare Take Her Favour Genre: Alt Rock Label: Standard Recording Co. CD: STD 1044 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30

In Summer 2003, Simon P. Moore began writing songs that required two guitar parts, so in addition to recruiting Karen Jensen to take the reigns on bass and vocals, he duplicitously coerced David Woodruff into playing guitar and singing. The result, Kentucky Nightmare, is rocking melodic, clever, and crafty.

Overview The debut album from Portland experimental pop band Gay Deceivers! The duo wrote this album over the course of three years, evolving their sound from a disparate blend of influences such as noise, Top 40 radio, metal, dancehall, Motown, and rock. The result is a technically accomplished, beat-driven journey with a strong avant-garde edge full of farreaching content. The group recorded Let It Come True with acclaimed shredder and engineer Radio Sloan (The Need, Peaches, Courtney Love) in her home studio, and mastered it with Mike Lastra of the seminal noise band Smegma. The album also features a number of guests and collaborations. STS (Cadallaca, The Haggard, The Lookers), Ryan Bukstein (Colt Vista), and Jenstar (The Online Romance, Fact or Fiction) all lend their talents to the album for a truly community-based and collaborative effort.
