jazz • Turning his back on the trendy tune, Stéphane Kerecki inscribes his artistic approach over the long term. Since 2003, combining change and continuity, the bass player has relied on two talented musicians of his generation: Thomas Grimmonprez (drums) and Matthieu Donarier (saxophones). • For this project, Kerecki has expanded his trio to a quintet with two major voices in contemporary jazz: saxophonist Tony Malaby and pianist Bojan Z, with whom he has many things in common, in particular their Serbian origin. • Out of the 12 tracks, Stéphane (alone or in collaboration) wrote 11 of them, the twelfth being a Serbian folk tune. In solo or at the head of the group, the leader makes his double bass speak nicely, including with the bow. To this elegant spareness respond Malaby’s density and Donarier’s lightness, both alternating on tenor and soprano, and Bojan Z’s incisive lyricism. • Jean-Pierre Mas has always had a Latin soul, the “Latinalma” that provides the title of this brand-new album. Moreover, it is quite illuminating that the word “alma” has the same meaning (“soul”) in Spanish and Portuguese. • A great melodist, Jean-Pierre pays particular attention to music that sings and to silence, deeming it important to not only play the notes, but also what exists between them. On Latinalma, produced by Jean-Jacques Pussiau, Jean-Pierre makes a veritable declaration of love to Latin America as a whole. • The pianist wrote practically all the numbers himself, with the exception of three compositions by Cartola, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Ariel Ramírez. • For this Latin immersion, Jean-Pierre has brought together two acquaintances: Juan José Mosalini, the Argentinean legend of the bandoneon, and Pierre Barouh, who had welcomed him on his Saravah label. • Two singers were also invited to share this tribute to Latin America: Sheyla Costa, a Brazilian claiming Caetano Veloso and Janis Joplin as influences, and Evita Delgado, a Venezuelan who learned the ropes in musical revues.

• Mississippi John Hurt is one of the greatest prewar blues artists; he created a fingerpicking blues style that nobody else had and made a series of great postwar recordings. This compilation features his most famous songs! • Hurt was an American country blues singer and guitarist. He incorporated a fast, pick-less, syncopated fingerpicking style that he taught himself. He was influenced by very few people, but does recall an elderly, unrecorded blues singer from that area, Rufus Hanks, who played 12-string guitar and harmonica. He also recalls listening to the country singer Jimmie Rodgers. • Many of Hurt’s songs were in very basic keys, his fingers picking notes within the chords.
