FRESH AIR: “This opera will eat your heart out … Written On Skin is both beautiful and bleak, with darkly translucent orchestration that includes mandolin, viola da gamba, and an eerie glass harmonica … in few operas does all the mayhem express what underlies Written On Skin: a profound awareness of human cruelty and its inextricable connection to passion and art. That tension fills every bar of Benjamin’s brutal and ravishing score.” OPERA TODAY: “George Benjamin’s Written On Skin sinks deeply into the psyche … one of the defining operas of the early 21st century.” BOSTON GLOBE: “Successful, serious contemporary operas are exceedingly rare in today’s classical music world, but the composer George Benjamin and the playwright Martin Crimp have created one in Written On Skin … This essential new opera has gone far, and will only continue its rise.”

In 1790 Haydn was generally considered the most famous composer of his age, but the relative obscurity of his operas in comparison with his other works was also the case in the 18th century. How is it possible that Haydn’s operas are still relatively unknown, despite a remark Empress Maria Theresia expressed upon hearing Haydn’s L’ Infeldelta Delusa in 1773: “If I want to hear good opera, I am going to Esterhaza!” PLAYABLE IN ALL CD PLAYERS. Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) is a household name as a composer of accessible and pleasing concertos for all sorts of solo instruments. And Vivaldi’s chamber music? Vivaldi wrote concertos and sonatas mainly for the all-girl pupils in the Ospedale della Pietà in his home city of Venice, an institution he had been associated with since 1703. Recorded here are the Sonatas in A minor RV 43, E minor RV 40, and B-flat major RV 46. The performing musicians replaced the two Allegro movements of the A minor Sonata with the two of the Sonata in A minor RV 44, preserved in two of the manuscripts.

Although the three types of the genre were already well known when Vivaldi began to cultivate them in the first decade of the 18th century, the advent of the Red Priest caused a revolution in the repertory.

William Dazeley: baritone Chorus Angelorum Bath Philharmonia Gavin Carr: director CARR: Seven Last Words from the Cross • Air for Strings • Ave Maria • The Beatitudes of Jesus • The Cloths of Heaven Popular English composer Paul Carr produces his second choral disc with the Bath Philharmonia, following his highly successful Requiem for an Angel (Classic FM CD of the Week). Premiered in Bath, UK earlier this year — and receiving a standing ovation — Carr’s “Seven Last Words from the Cross” is a profoundly moving work, dramatically describing Christ’s last hours on earth. On this disc, it is followed by the contemplative “Air for Strings,” offering a moment of reflection before “Ave Maria,” the prayer to Christ’s Mother, who watched him die on the cross. Christ’s most famous message, “The Beatitudes of Jesus,” is then offered as testament to his legacy before Carr’s breathtaking a cappella setting of Yeats’ “The Cloths of Heaven” lifts the listeners’ thoughts and souls to Christ’s ultimate destination in paradise.

In collaboration with present-day composers they transfer the historic form of the madrigal to a contemporary musical universe. Over the years the singers have continuously expanded their specialized repertoire by commissioning numerous compositions and, in doing so, have brought an entire music genre back to life — an outstanding example of an artistic long-term concept and its realization!

In the book Hans von Bülow: A Life for Music, published in 2011, Kenneth Birkin observes that he “never really made the grade as a composer.” However, while it is true that Bülow is perhaps best known for his editions of keyboard works by other composers, he also wrote a substantial number of solo piano pieces, songs, chamber works, and choral music. The pieces here represent Bülow at his best as a composer, proving that his creative talents were not negligible, even if they were no match for his remarkable powers as a promoter and interpreter of the works of others.

All the events, expectations, disappointments, joy, and sorrow are communicated directly by the person experiencing them. The four observational songs (“Der Nußbaum,” “Die Lotusblume,” “Herzeleid,” and “Schneeglöckchen”), in which the poet acts as our intermediary, also share a preoccupation with private, youthful yearning and heartbreak, with only “Schneeglöckchen” falling into the archetypal lieder catch-all of gender-neutral nature song.

Nimbus Alliance Nick van Bloss: piano CHOPIN: Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58 • 24 Preludes, Op. 28 The last of Chopin’s three sonatas for piano was finished in 1844. The piano writing is at once perfect for the instrument and taxing for the pianist, because everything is so clear that even the smallest misjudgment of dynamics makes itself heard. Chopin’s Preludes have come to be regarded as one of the monuments of the early Romantic movement in music. He worked on the Preludes between 1836 and 1839, but it’s possible some of them were in his mind before that. The idea of a set of 24 pieces in all keys obviously stems from Bach’s “48,” but Chopin went about the task in his own unique way.

If at first glance the pairing of Sawyers with Elgar seems strange, it is worth considering the similar musical environment in which all three works were written. Both composers were compelled to write in their own very individual style, which proved unfashionable within musical circles for some of their career. Indeed, much of Sawyers’ output was initially dismissed for failing to embrace the more esoteric, experimental, and avant-garde techniques embraced by many of his contemporaries, but he was always compelled to write music that he “could hear,” with every note serving an expressive purpose. Similarly, by 1918 Elgar had become dejected with the modernist trends already gaining momentum in Europe and would write very little for the final 20 years of his life. For Sawyers, a busy professional life as a violinist in the Royal Opera House Orchestra left a 20-year hiatus in his output, and this disc marks the first commercial release of his chamber music.

It takes us from the prophecy of the arrival of the Messiah into Jerusalem, to the traumatic events of the crucifixion and the subsequent resurrection. It examines the confusions that must have been in the minds of the people around Jesus as he embarks on his journey to death and his unwillingness to save himself, and charts the Omega (the end) of Jesus’ life and the Alpha (the beginning) of Christianity.

This rare and flamboyant program, designed by Paolo Carlini, brings to light an instrument that is given insufficient consideration as a soloist by composers today, despite being among the first to evolve technically. In the Sixties, it was the bassoon that identified and pioneered the new sounds of wind instruments, following research on multiples (the playing of more than one sound at a time) by Bruno Bartolozzi and Sergio Penazzi.
