As SF Classical Voice recently wrote, “it’s Jake Heggie’s turn to be ever-present.” Opera News featured Heggie in a cover story this summer, his opera Great Scott saw its world premiere at the Dallas Opera, Dead Man Walking is in a new production at Indiana University, Bloomington, Moby-Dick is at the Los Angeles Opera, conducted by James Conlon, in November and December — and this only scratches the surface of press surrounding this venerable composer. d

Additionally, the album was highly praised by Musicweb-International: “A sequence of juicy cadences sung to perfection by Trio Medieval ... an unusual but surprisingly desirable trio of works, very nicely recorded and performed to perfection ... Lang and Olivero’s works were both commissioned by the Louth Contemporary Music Society, which is also deserves plaudits for creating this strikingly canorous trinity.”

That character is not quite the Ophelia of Shakespeare’s Hamlet; her entire text is made up from words Ophelia speaks in that play, but she uses these words in different ways, to express herself differently. Roderick Williams: baritone Sioned Williams: harp STIMPSON: Dylan • The Drowning of Capel Celyn Stone Records presents two of the UK’s finest musicians, Roderick Williams (baritone) and Sioned Williams (harp), in a superb performance of Michael Stimpson’s Dylan, a biographical song cycle of Wales’ most renowned poet Dylan Thomas. Through his own wonderful texts and poems, Dylan’s life is traced from his childhood in Wales, through his fiery marriage to Caitlin and his love of alcohol, to his untimely death in New York in 1953. On this CD, Dylan is paired with The Drowning of Capel Celyn (Boddi Capel Celyn) for solo harp, a work Sioned commissioned from Michael to mark her 60th birthday. Capel Celyn, a village near Bala in North Wales, was flooded in 1965 to create a reservoir for Liverpool. People were devastated as the water rushed into the valley, drowning the chapel, Quaker meeting house, post office, and a number of cottages. Set in five movements, the work evokes Capel Celyn in first light, the marching protesters, and the violence of the flooding.

Evil Penguin Records Julien Libeer: piano RAVEL: Valses nobles et sentimentales • Le tombeau de Couperin • LIPATTI Nocturne • Sonatine pour la main gauche
Maurice RAVEL
Up to now, Belgian piano prodigy Julien Libeer has — quite surprisingly — been able to steer clear of the international spotlight, in spite of being widely recognized as one of the world’s most astonishing talents. In 2010, at the tender age of 22, he was nominated “Young Musician of the Year” by the Belgian music press; in 2008 he had received the prestigious Juventus Award, previously awarded to later icons like Piotr Anderszewski and Emmanuel Pahud. Since then, he has performed on stages including the Palau de la Musica Catalana (Barcelona), Barbican Hall (London), and the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), often in series typically reserved for more “weathered” virtuosi. On his debut album Lignes Claires, Libeer lays bare the luminous lines in the music of his favorite composers, exploring the reticent sensibility in Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin and Valses nobles et sentimentales, and the haunting hypnotism and delicate understatement in the Nocturne and Sonatine by Romanian piano virtuoso Dinu Lipatti (1917–1950), whose output as a composer has been unjustly eclipsed by his aura as a performing genius.

His collection of violin concertos is one of the most ambitious sets of the period, ranking among the most impressive achievements in the Italian repertoire. The musicians of the Ensemble Diderot deliver the world premiere recording of these exceptionally well-crafted concertos in their usual energetic, precise, and intoxicating way. Felix MENDELSSOHN & Louise FARRENC Trios for Piano, Flute and Cello CD: MER 84624 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25 d
Meridian Records is delighted to announce this set of trio chamber works by the highly regarded composers Felix Mendelssohn and Louise Farrenc. The combination of flute, cello, and piano was very unconventional during the Romantic era, yet Mendelssohn and Farrenc created exquisite examples of music for this relatively neglected ensemble of instruments. Mendelssohn’s Trio in D minor is very well known in its original version for violin, cello, and piano. Less known is the fact that Mendelssohn himself saw this work suitable for flute replacing the violin and consented to its arrangement. The result proves he was right! At a time when female composers were not taken seriously, French composer Louise Farrenc enjoyed a considerable reputation during her own lifetime. Her Trio for flute, cello, and piano displays beautiful romantic melodies, graceful writing, and deep understanding of the three instruments. These two compositions are a new treasure to behold, both for flute players and music lovers.

At long last, Sir Hubert Parry’s complete Twelve Sets of English Lyrics are being made available for the first time ever, beginning here with Volume 1, which includes some of Parry’s delightful Shakespeare settings. This CD came about from a close collaboration between SOMM, the excellent pianist Andrew West, and three charismatic singers at the top of their professions, all sharing the same fondness for the expressive lyricism and eloquence inherent in Parry’s songs. The songs are central to Parry’s output, and are hugely rewarding when studied more closely.

Howells is rooted in the English Cathedral tradition to which he has contributed so many services and anthems, and his is a unique and instantly recognizable idiom rich in intricate and harmonically complex counterpoint.

John Sheppard was an outstanding composer of the mid-Tudor period, a near-contemporary of Tallis and Tye. It is inevitable that attention has been given to his Latin music, as it is superior to that of the Anglican rite. Nevertheless, his Anglican music is a significant part of his output and should not be ignored. Unfortunately much of his English-texted music survives so incomplete that it cannot be recovered; nevertheless the present recording aims to make as much of it available as possible.
