Korea is the only divided country in the world. After the Korean War (June 25, 1950– July 27, 1953), South Korea and North Korea established a border that cut the Korean peninsula roughly in half. Stretching for two kilometers on either side of this border is the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). In the past half century, the Korean DMZ has been a deadly place for humans, making habitation impossible. Only around the village of Panmunjeom and the Dong Bukbu Line have there been regular incursions by people. The natural isolation of the DMZ has created an involuntary park, now recognized as one of the most well preserved areas of temperate habitat in the world. Several endangered animal and planet species now exist among the heavily fortified fences, landmines, and listening posts. These include the extremely rare Red-Crowned Crane (a staple of Asian art) and the White-Naped Crane as well as the extremely rare Korean Tiger, Amur Leopard, and Asiatic Black Bear. Ecologists have identified some 2,900 plant species, 70 types of mammals, and 320 kinds of birds within the narrow buffer zone. Additional surveys are now being conducted throughout the region.

The forests of Asia are the largest contiguous forests in the world, and cover an area of millions of square miles. From the foothills of the Himalayas, they extend westward to the Japanese islands. They include the vast Siberian Taiga, and extend southward to the temperate forests of central China and India. This region is characterized by extremes of temperature and precipitation, and is home to a broad array of wildlife including such rare species as the snow leopard, the Siberian tiger, and Lake Baikal’s freshwater seals. In this program we examine the forests of Asia and the wildlife they contain. Episode 1: Creatures of the Thaw All over Northern Asia, in the few short weeks of the spring thaw, nature comes alive as the freshwater that has been locked up in snow and ice is released. Along the shores of Lake Baikal, the planet’s only freshwater seals give birth to their pups. Along the riverbanks, Japanese cranes forage amidst the stubble of the autumn harvest. As spring turns to summer, animal and plant life explodes in Asia’s lakes, rivers, and marshes as a new cycle of life matures in nature’s unceasing rhythm. Episode 2: At the Edge: Life at the Vertical Limit Winter is freezing and bleak in the Himalayas. The terrain is largely vertical, with large extremes in temperature as the elevation rises. Few plants can grow here. At 15,000 feet, the vertical limit for most wildlife, there is only half the oxygen available at sea level. In this wild and inhospitable terrain, Bharal, the rare blue sheep of the Himalayas, forage for food while a snow leopard carefully stalks a straggler … just another day in the long winter of the Himalayas. Episode 3: A Forest for All Seasons The temperate forests of Asia occupy the zones between the coniferous forests of Siberia and the rainforests of South Asia. Stretching in a band from the foothills of the Himalayas all the way to the Japanese islands, they are largely deciduous. Here, plants and animals have to find a way to live with both heat and cold, adapting their lives to the cycle of the four seasons.
