Annelie Gahl: violin Klaus Lang: Fender Rhodes CAGE: Six Melodies (1950) • Thirteen Harmonies (1985) “The piece 4’33”, written by John Cage, is possibly the most famous and important piece in 20th century avant-garde … in one short piece, Cage broke from the history of classical composition and proposed that the primary act of musical performance was not making music, but listening.” — PBS American Masters Klaus Lang, trained organist and internationally renowned composer, performs these pieces on a Fender Rhodes for the first time. Annelie Gahl, known as a versatile interpreter of both Old and New Music, plays the violin exactly as requested by Cage, without vibrato and with minimum weight on the bow. The musical material dates back to the 18th century—it is based on chorales, hymns, and congregational songs of the Protestant Church, all of them written by composers born as Americans and indirectly related to European musical traditions. Cage adapted and fragmented these pieces of utility music, positioning them in time as individual, singular objects. also available CAGE Sonatas and Interludes Cat # CNO 20001 Price Code: S (SRP $18.99) U.S. ORDERS ONLY

César CAMARERO

Arcángel: flamenco singer/Roberto Fabbriciani: flute/Stefano Scodanibbio: double bass/Ensemble Residencias/Mauricio Sotelo: conductor

Taller Sonoro

SOTELO: De Oscuro Llama (2008)

The nine separate pieces on this disc, performed by Taller Sonoro (with whom Camarero has had a long relationship), span a compositional history of nearly 20 years but, when put together, contribute to an almost unified sense across over an hour’s worth of music. The title work, scored for saxophone, percussion, and piano, presents the composer at his most intimate and evocative, yet also his most direct and accessible.

De Oscura Llama

34 maneras de mirar un vaso de agua

It is no simple matter reconciling the teachings of Luigi Nono, yet in 2008’s De Oscura Llama (“Of a Dark Flame”), this is what Mauricio Sotelo so successfully achieves. The ability to bring together unrelated elements into a whole has been characteristic of Sotelo’s compositional activity for some time, and here his talent shines via the layering of a flamenco cantaor voice between separate instrumental lines.

Release Date: July 13, 2010 Grup Instrumental de València Joan Cerveró: conductor Pilar Jurado, Jacqueline Squarcia: sopranos GUERRERO: Concierto de cámara • Delta Cephei • Vâda • Ars Combinatoria • Anemos C • Hyades Born in 1951, Francisco Guerrero was to become the totemic figure for contemporary music in Spain, a position neatly encapsulated in this recording of his chamber music (including his Chamber Concerto, Hyades, and Delta Cephei). His music is characterized by its extreme originality and its power to influence. The six pieces on this disc, which feature the soprano voices of Pilar Jurado and Jacqueline Squarcia, reflect the full register to be found across Guerrero’s chamber music output and, in particular, its proximity to the world of electro-acoustic music. This is music that is by turns tempestuous, incisive, full of declaratory violence, enigmatic, and subject to abrupt contrasts in texture. Guerrero was responsible for introducing the use of mathematical algorithms into Spanish composition, not by way of some mechanical transformation but through a scrupulous, self-justifying approach, engendering his music with energy and almost visionary vitality.

Simone Stock: soprano Daniel Johanssen: tenor Howard Quilla Croft, Tom Sol: baritones Lucerne Symphony Orchestra Rüdiger Bohn: conductor SÁNCHEZ-VERDU: Gramma There is an all-encompassing and omnivorous approach to the creative work of José María Sánchez-Verdú—his inspirations derive from the purest traditions of Islamic music as much as they do from Western Medieval and Renaissance ideas. Such an approach has secured for Sánchez-Verdú a highly prominent international role. His chamber opera Gramma was commissioned by the Munich Biennial and comes with a libretto that draws on the works of authors as varied as Plato, Homer, Ovid, St. Augustine, Hugo de Saint-Victor, Dante, Saint John of Patmos, and the Bible. The performance here, given by the same artists who premiered the work in Munich along with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra directed by Rüdiger Bohn, does full justice to the subtleties of Sánchez-Verdú’s score.

“The sharpness of the contrasts come across like physical blows with the Alexander Quartet, and there is a steely edge to their sound in some sections which can be quite unsettling. There is great beauty, but no comfort in the exquisite dying moments of the conclusion.” — Musicweb-International Captured here, on three discs, is the first half of the Alexander String Quartet’s complete Shostakovich cycle. Superbly recorded at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2005–06, this exquisite collection contains the first seven quartets, the Piano Quintet with legendary Australian pianist Roger Woodward, and two exceptional transcriptions for string quartet by ASQ’s first violinist of a pair of the piano Preludes and Fugues from Op. 87 (1950–51). Spanning roughly the period from 1937–1960, this beautiful collection is accompanied by superb liner notes from musicologist Eric Bromberger.

These fabled works dating from 1960–1975 represent some of Shostakovich’s most bitterly frank, occasionally transcendental essays for the string quartet. At times poignant yet occasionally ribald, these performances have been called utterly compelling. Unique in this stunning survey is a fine performance of his “Unfinished” quartet, the first recording of what was originally to have been Shostakovich’s 9th Quartet, discovered and published in 2003. Cantiones Sacræ

Défense de la Basse de Viole

Scheidt was one of the most interesting Lutheran composers of the early 17th century. His Cantiones Sacræ for eight voices mark the summit of Renaissance musical style; even though Protestant chorales are integrated into the work, Scheidt does not hesitate to use expressive effects that originated in the Italian madrigal style.

The musical equivalent of Hubert Le Blanc’s 1740 essay on the bass viol, depicting the repertoire of the viol, violin, and cello during the first half of the 18th century.

Like Chopin’s Barcarolle, Fauré’s work shows equal measures of limpidity and gravity, brightness and great depth. This music is very secretive, yet very human—because of its élan, its aspiration to vastness, and its inner poetry. Not a single page of the thirteen Barcarolles is lacking that inspiration, which so movingly brings them together as a set of thirteen poems.

Musique en Wallonie

Capilla Flamenca Dirk Snellings: director Music from the court of Margaret of Austria (1480–1530) The life of Margaret of Austria (1480–1530), daughter of the emperor Maximilian I of Austria, is reflected in the works performed by Capilla Flamenca in this program. As regent of the Netherlands under Charles V, she combined her statesmanship with wide-ranging cultural interests. Courtly music, both sacred and profane, had an important place at her court in Mechelen. Her splendid songbooks contain works by Pierre de la Rue, Josquin Desprez, Alexander Agricola, and many other prominent composers. Despite cheerful love songs full of hope and playful dances from her youth, the dominant mood in her music was melancholy—perhaps the result of so much adversity in her marriages and in the rest of her life. The vocal and instrumental consort Capilla Flamenca takes its name from the choir of the court chapel of Emperor Charles V. Capilla Flamenca recruits its specialized musicians mainly from Flanders so as to bring to life the unique timbre of this brilliant 15th–16th century music in its full authenticity. The group has been honored with some of the most prestigious international awards for their artistic, musicological, and historical thoroughness. Numerous CD recordings have received major awards, including several Prix Chocs (Le Monde de la Musique), Diapason d’Ors, Répertoire10, two Caecilia prizes from the Belgian music press, and the 2004 Klara Music Prize.

His Overture in B is a musical expression of the sorrows and problems of the stock exchange speculators, hence its epithet, “La Bourse.” Let’s hope that his music can provide some relief for the victims of the stock market in the 21st century!

La Divina Armonia Lorenzo Ghielmi: director Doron Schleifer, Krystian Adam, Mirko Guadagnini, Barbara Schmidt-Gaden: vocal soloists Varese Chamber Choir FEO: Passio secundum Joannem (complete oratorio) In the 18th century Venice and Rome were the only Italian cities that could rival Naples in the realm of music. From all over Europe, young musicians hurried to these centers to complete their studies and meet the greatest living composers. One of these was Francesco Feo, a close friend of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, whose music is preserved in the Biblioteca dei Filippini in Naples. His masterwork was probably the St. John Passion, composed around 1740 and probably meant to pair with the Pergolesi Stabat Mater. La Divina Armonia, directed by Lorenzo Ghielmi, now presents the world premiere recording of this wonderful music. The booklet features beautiful photographs of the Sacro Monte di Varese, an impressive baroque monument declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
