The sacred music of the 19th and 20th centuries is like a chest of hidden treasures. The objective of Editions Hortus, founded in 1994, is to reveal to the public the little-known works for voice and organ of these periods. These are works that resonate with the aspirations and preoccupations rampant at the start of the 21st century: death, desire, and religion. Led by outstanding soloists, Collegium Vocale is at the peak of its art. A new version destined to become a milestone!

Here, he performs with Susan Manoff, a popular accompanist among lyric singers (notably Patricia Petibon and Sandrine Piau) and an enthusiastic chamber music lover. These sonatas, composed as a true dialogue between instruments, highlight the natural complicity between Radulovic and Manoff, which gives this album a joyous and graceful atmosphere.

In Jos van Immerseel’s view, this composer is one of the most significant personalities of the 20th century, coupling immense erudition with surprising spontaneity—not to mention the fact that Poulenc was also a particularly brilliant pianist. The works presented here are steeped in the French traditions of the 16th & 18th centuries. In the Concerto for two pianos, Poulenc breaks totally with the traditional concerto genre, liberating the form and the thematic development. Above all, the piece expresses the sheer pleasure of playing!

Doulce Mémoire Denis Raisin Dadre: conductor DE FÉVIN: Requiem d’Anne de Bretagne On the death of Anne of Brittany, her husband King Louis XII honored her with exceptional funeral ceremonies lasting 40 days, which forever sealed her image as Queen of France and Duchess of Brittany. As he prepared this program centering on Antoine de Févin’s Missa pro defunctis, and read the vivid narrative by the herald of Anne of Brittany, Denis Raisin Dadre realized that beyond all the official mourning there was also a silent sorrow: that of the Bretons who had lost their duchess and were in the process of losing their duchy’s independence. To make the voices of the people heard, he asked Yann-Fañch Kemener to contribute some traditional Breton gwerzioù. These solo songs act as a counterpoint to the complex polyphony that expresses the pomp of royalty.

XI: 42, 59, 66, 70, 96, 101 &113 Prince Nicolas Esterhazy, in whose service Haydn spent a large part of his life, was an enthusiastic champion of an instrument that was in the process of disappearing: the baryton, a type of viola da gamba with sympathetic strings that were also able to be plucked. Haydn composed many works for his employer’s use during the 1770s, among which were the 125 trios for baryton with viola and cello. Dez Cordas

Gone Away is the second recording from the guitar/bass duo Dez Cordas. For this project, Slotkin & Butterfield decided to perform music from the folk art tradition, which has been extremely influential and special to both of them for years. All works on this CD are based on folk music from Appalachia, Romania, France, and Spain, interpreted by leading composers such as Bela Bartók and Manuel da Falla. Despite the fact that guitar and bass form the backbone of rock, blues, and jazz, this instrumental pairing is extremely rare in the classical field. For this reason, almost all Dez Cordas’ repertoire is arranged, or “borrowed,” from music written for other instruments. While this is certainly challenging, it is also very liberating, and ensures that the duo keeps a fresh and unique sound.

Two years of work and research were necessary to put this program together, as the musicians strove for an in-depth approach to each motet in terms of both style and instrumentation, made possible by the very structure of the ensemble. This disc, which had a resounding critical success when first released, offers the first complete translation in modern French of Guillaume de Machaut’s motets. An indispensable set!

John Hawkins wrote in 1776: “His singularities can only be ascribed to that boldness and self-possession which are ever the concomitants of genius.” He ranked Sammartini’s concertos and overtures at the same level as those of Arcangelo Corelli and Francesco Geminiani, and even held them in higher esteem than Georg Frideric Handel’s. Yet through an inexplicable twist of history, Sammartini has remained largely unknown to the general public. To remedy this, Les Muffatti have made a careful selection from among the plethora of Sammartini’s masterworks in order to fully reflect their quality.

The Livre du Saint Sacrement became Messiaen’s grand farewell to his own instrument, and Michael Bonaventure performs it from memory on the Rieger organ at St. Giles’ Cathedral, whose true acoustic preserves the clarity of Messiaen’s lines. Max BRUCH

Max Bruch was almost an exact contemporary of Camille Saint-Saëns, with whom he shared a taste for fine musical structure and an unconditional fidelity to the spirit of Beethoven. Each exercised his talent in his respective country. But whereas Saint-Saëns was able to make a name for himself as a virtuoso musician and composer in a France that was bubbling with artistic activity, Max Bruch found himself faced with the ‘heavyweights’ of German music: Liszt, Brahms, Wagner and, from 1890, the overwhelming figure of Richard Strauss. Yet he is a worthy representative of the ‘provincial’ movement in German musical creation, an activity that was encouraged by Germany’s many art centers as a means of establishing their social and cultural reputation, and thereby extending their political influence.

The individual qualities of the three members enables them to take on sonatas just as effectively as trios. This is the format adopted here in another summit of chamber music, Schubert’s two piano trios and the two traditional stumbling blocks for violinists, cellists, and pianists: the Arpeggione and the Fantasy in C major. The Arpeggione, marvelously interpreted here, is often played; the Fantasy, on the other hand, is discarded from most recitals because of its difficulty.

Conversazioni I: Cantatas from a Cardinal’s Court Cat # AVR 2197 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case; Box Lot 25

In the late 17th century, all roads really did lead to Rome for the aspiring musician. There, wealthy aristocrats-turned-priests and Catholic nobility from across Europe vied for cultural status through artistic patronage. In particular, the young Pietro Ottoboni (1667–1740) reigned supreme among patrons of music, supporting Caldara and Albinoni, Alessandro Scarlatti and his son Domenico, and Handel, all of whom inspired and were inspired by one another. Musical gatherings of the time—called conversazione—often featured dramatic cantatas as well as virtuoso instrumental showpieces such as the works featured on this album. Recalling this fertile musical era, rising star countertenor Andrew Radley with Julian Perkins and his London-based period instrument ensemble Sounds Baroque, dispatch these entertaining vocal works with aplomb, interspersed with virtuosic harpsichord works performed to perfection by Perkins. With this, the first in a series of conversazione recordings, Sounds Baroque celebrates the passion, theatricality, and sheer variety of music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Charles Owen: piano FAURÉ: Barcarolles 1–13 • Trois Romances sans paroles, Op. 17 “Exemplary. Classic. Spellbinding. And enthusiastically recommended.” — Fanfare Pianist Charles Owens follows a critically acclaimed release of Fauré’s popular Nocturnes with a relative rarity: a complete survey of the composer’s Barcarolles uniquely coupled with Trois Romances sans paroles, Fauré’s first published works for piano. The Barcarolles straddle the turn of the 20th century and span a four-decade period, from 1880–1921. The works’ dedicatees were a veritable roll call of Parisian musical elite. Though written and published separately, they hang together well through their combination of mystery, humanity, and inner poetry. Yet it is a rare pianist who plays all thirteen, a task that Charles Owen lives up to brilliantly!

York2 Fiona York, John York: pianos HOLST: The Planets, Op. 32, Version for Four Hands at One Piano • Y. BOWEN: Suite in Three Movement, Op. 52 • Suite No. 2, Op. 71 (sel.) “It’s amazing. It’s really amazing, what they do here. The four-hand transcriptions—not even two-piano!—do not sound derivative. They attain their own independent musical value. This is one of those performances that justify the existence of four-hand piano transcriptions of orchestral music.” — Musicweb-International The generative threads of this music were spun at St. Paul’s Girls’ School on Brook Green in Hammersmith, West London, the elegant Edwardian buildings where Gustav Holst served as the school’s first Director of Music from 1905 until his death in 1934. There was a superb female choir on hand, and colleagues he trusted could work from his dictation and try out his new ideas. His bright, soundproof room was where he wrote and rehearsed The Planets before its auspicious public debut in 1918 at the Queen’s Hall.

Cat # ANE 33009 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Number of Discs: 1 Digipak; Box Lot 20

The RTVE Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of its then-departing Principal Conductor Adrian Leaper, animates the works on this disc dedicated to Alfredo Aracil. We begin with the most recent, Epitafio de Prometeo, an elegant dialogue between distant epochs immersed in an orchestral texture of revealing and diaphanous delicacy. A strong contrast is provided in the shape of the witty miniature Giardino-Notte, written in 1994 as a tribute to the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, at the time celebrating its 90th anniversary. The two parts of Paisaje invisible (1999) play with the listener’s hearing perception, the result of the composer’s reflections about memory, and the Adagio con variaciones, written in 1996, is an evocative recreation of the most lyrical Romanticism of Wagner and Wolf.

Benet Casablancas’ defining qualities can be highlighted in six characteristics: his impeccable technique, his originality, his lack of dogmatism, the disciplined approach he brings to his work, his constructive self-criticism, and his capacity to communicate. The three orchestral works included on this disc—Alter Klang (2006), Tres Epigramas (2001), and Darkness visible (2008)—transport us into sound worlds of great richness and expressiveness, of powerful contrasts and subtle timbric treatment.

The case of Santiago Lanchares is exceptional for at least two reasons: because of his background as a rock musician and because he devoted a substantial part of his oeuvre to the piano. The work that occupies the greater part of this recording, the ballet Castor and Pollux, bestows a major role on that instrument, a protagonism that it shares with the percussion. The work demands, from both players, a considerable level of virtuosity and rhythmic precision but also a significant capacity for bringing out the “cantabile” potential of the score.

Arditti Quartet Irvine Arditti, Ashot Sarkissjan: violins Ralf Ehlers: viola Lucas Fels: cello HALFFTER: String Quartet “Mémoires” (1970) • String Quartet No. 7 “Espacio de silencio” This second group of works for string quartet coincides with the celebration of the 80th birthday celebrations for the composer. Born in March 1930 he has, since the beginning of the 1950s, been an indisputable force on the compositional scene both in Spain and internationally. And while the Halffterian quality of sound tends to be better suited to the world of the orchestra, his predisposition towards the more narrowly-defined concerns of the chamber music world is no less representative of the salient lines of his overall compositional approach as when he essays that venerable genre of the string quartet. Included on this new disc, the performances again entrusted to the incomparable Arditti Quartet, is the seventh string quartet “Espacios de silencio” (2007), as well as works from the 1970s and 1990s.

Juanjo Mena, Gianandrea Noseda: conductors Georg Nigl: baritone Roberto Balconi: countertenor RAI National Symphony Orchestra PABLO: Casi un espejo • Passio Both of these works—commissioned for the RAI National Symphony Orchestra and conducted by two rising stars of the orchestral podium—offer an evocative and meaningful image of the mature poetics of Luis de Pablo, internationally recognized as one of the greatest craftsmen and leading figures in the renewal of Spanish music from the 1950s onwards. The range and depth of the openness, and of the interests that characterize the poetics, do not make schematic definitions easy, among other reasons because his highly elevated mastery is characterized by an unusual incompatibility with any tendency that could be provided with a “label.” José Luis García del Busto rightly defines Luis de Pablo’s musical personality as “uniformly cohesive and yet plural.”

Kryptos Quartet YSAŸE: String Quintet in B minor “à mon frère Théophile” • String Quartet “London” • Andante in B minor • Paganini Variations For a long time the fame of Eugène Ysaÿe as a composer was overshadowed by his fame as a performing musician: he was the most renowned violin virtuoso of his generation. In the 1890s, when he was a young man in his thirties, he was pivotal in advocating contemporary French and Belgian music. In 1923, he wrote his legendary Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, a musical heritage for the generations to come: they are the violinists’ equivalent to the Six Cello Suites by Bach. Ysaÿe’s work is not always easy to track down. Many compositions only exist in manuscript form, or were not published until years later, sometimes in adapted versions. His son Antoine Ysaÿe, and later his grandson Jacques Ysaÿe, took care of the musical heritage and publications. Today the collection is located in the Royal Library of Brussels. This CD presents some premieres from this collection.
