Planetary Unknown, David S. Ware’s new quartet, made their debut in June 2011 with the self-titled studio communion on AUM Fidelity. The album Planetary Unknown documented an epic occurrence, with major artistic circles between members Ware, Cooper-Moore, William Parker, and Muhammad Ali arcing together and synchronizing anew. Planetary Unknown traveled to Austria for their European concert debut at the highly esteemed Jazzfestival Saalfelden in August 2011. That concert, in three widely ranging sections, is presented here in its majestic entirety. This time out, David focuses solely on his tenor saxophone. Improvised jazz simply does not come any better than this epic concert—another one for the ages, indeed!

Bend Sinister seem to almost revel in their ability to confound listeners and industry types throughout Canada. They churn out blisteringly fast prog-influenced songs, followed by chirpy and cheerful Beach Boys-soaked melodies. They are the kind of musicians who have both Hall & Oates and Iron Maiden in their vinyl collections, and are not afraid to admit any influence or try any new sound. For the last three years, the band has been a tornado of activity on the Canadian music scene. Since 2008 they have released two EPs and one full-length album. Their most recent single, “Things Will Get Better” (produced by Howard Redekopp), was added to commercial radio stations across Canada and reached #2 on the CBC Radio 3 chart. They have been invited to perform at a plethora of festivals across Canada, and have acted as tour support for Metric, Hot Hot Heat, Dragonette, Born Ruffians, Minus the Bear, and We Are Scientists.

Guitarist Chris Forsyth is a unique voice in the realm of American music, having emerged from the challenging free-form expressionism of his old group Peeesseye with a lyrical command rare in any genre. Forsyth has always relied on the vernacular of country and blues to make his point, while also maintaining an open-ended and experimental approach, collaborating with artists as varied as free folk goddess Meg Baird, noise-oriented trumpeter Nate Wooley, and analog synthesist Koen Holtkamp (Mountains). His newest work brings his trademark lyricism to new heights in his most straightforward setting yet. Gone are the fleshed-out rock band arrangements of last year’s Paranoid Cat LP, replaced by Forsyth shunning overdubs and playing his transcendent songs alone in a room on his electric guitar. • Mint green vinyl includes digital download of full album & remix album! • West Coast US tour in August 2012 (dates TBD). • Previously worked with renowned producer & engineer Kramer (Galaxie 500, Low). • Has shared the stage with Grizzly Bear, The Black Heart Procession, and more. • RIYL: Galaxie 500, Boo Radleys, Pale Saints, Flaming Lips, Grandaddy.

Media & marketing

• Full promo campaign by Three Ring Records.

Like all great voyages, Crystal Shipsss began with a vision. One morning in Montreal, a bleary-eyed Dane named Jacob Faurholt awoke to find that all of his friends were making music for a living. Soon afterward, he returned to Europe, quit his teaching job, and began building the tender framework for his one-man musical vessel. But before setting sail through a sonic seascape of innovative, industrial, and introspective songs that share the same wavelengths as early Jesus & Mary Chain, Pale Saints, and Boo Radleys, Faurholt set up a port of call in Berlin. While debut album Yay does boast conventional songwriting, Jacob’s living room production expands upon the experimental aspect of albums such as David Bowie’s Heroes and Galaxie 500’s On Fire. The album has already gleaned positive reviews through its limited cassette release via Portuguese label Cakes and Tapes, and now Three Ring Records is proud to smash a bottle of California champagne against the Crystal Shipsss’ mast as it celebrates a release of Yay on limited edition, 10” mint green vinyl. Crystal Shipsss will celebrate by touring the US West Coast in August 2012 (details to follow).

Procession heralds the reawakening of acclaimed Swedish dark ambient project Desiderii Marginis, an album that sounds at the same time warmingly familiar and inspiringly new. While Desiderii Marginis is perhaps not as prolific as some other acts, their “quality over quantity” motto makes each album well worth the wait, and this is certainly no exception. The eight pieces that make up this new album stand firmly on their own, yet form an even more remarkable whole. Johan Levin evokes a grand soundscape, beneath the faded remnants of the celestial spheres, where timbres have space to grow, evolve, and reflect off each other. The atmosphere of the album is not that of solid darkness, or an abyss opening beneath you, but rather a wintry pale, grey dusk casting long, sweeping shadows. Cyclic Law is honored to welcome Johan Levin’s long-standing project to its ever-expanding family. Track Listing: Come Ruin and Rapture • Land of Strangers • Her Name is Poverty • Silent Messenger • In Brightness • Here is to the Future • Adrift • Procession Key Markets: New York, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago

Powerful beats, fast-paced sequences, and great melodies topped with distorted vocals are the recipe here. Whether the end of the world is as nigh or otherwise, there can be little doubt that we live in tempestuous times. Art has a tendency to reflect its environment—therefore, in the aftermath of the “Occupy” protests, continued rioting across Europe, the ongoing “Arab Spring,” and the sabre-rattling across the Straits of Hormuz, it should come as no surprise that Detroit Diesel have chosen Coup d’état as the title of their new album. Within the space of just one year, the Canadian harsh-EBM duo’s debut album Terre Humaine has already established them as one of the key threats to the current leaders of the dark electro scene. Modulate is a project of DJ Geoff Lee, a resident DJ at Manchester’s Wendyhouse, an alternative/industrial nightclub. After garnering a massive following with his debut EP Skullfuck and the follow-up album Detonation, Modulate now returns with Robots. • New album, Worship, will be released June 26 via Dead Oceans. • Crucial re-release of the vinyl version of A Place To Bury Strangers’ breakout self-titled release. • Now in its fifth pressing on LP, this record is in high demand. • Received an 8.4 from Pitchfork “Best New Music.”

A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called “the loudest band in New York.” This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called “loud” rock and roll that’s out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they’ve accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that’s clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make.

• Essential vinyl reissue of the hard-to-find record that initiated the band’s Totem trilogy. • An underground phenomenon around the world, with editions of records quickly selling out. • Features vocals by honorary member Alan Bishop of the Sun City Girls.

Like a reverse dark side of the new age sound, on the Totem series Master Musicians of Bukkake perform ritualistic electric excursions into the outer and inner reaches. Relying more on the electric power of psyched guitars, analog synth chants, and exotic heavy percussion, Totem One echoes with the delusions of a West Coast death cult. Outer-spaced Gamelan, dusty fuzz rock from celestial deserts, meditations of a deranged Krishna gathering, and the blurry acoustic guitar majesty of the Cascade mountains all reveal themselves in epic form.

LAND release their debut album, Night Within, on July 10 through Important Records. Guest contributions include David Sylvian, Daniel O’Sullivan (Miracle and Ulver), Duke Garwoodand, and many others, with the two creators taking a directorial role. The album, sculpted in Reykjavik by Ben Frost and enhanced by his signature aural physicality and visceral sub bass, is a vast collision of sound, from free brass and woodwind to “geometric” bowed cymbals and metallic percussion. Described by the band as “approaching an apocalyptic noir narrative,” Night Within thematically points toward a world occupied by the early postmodern detective stories of Paul Auster and the urban neon dislocation of Taxi Driver, with its existential protagonist roaming the city alone late at night. In a time when the hardcore scene has been confined to breakdowns and guitar squeals, and fashion has become more important than ideas and music, The Blue Letter challenges stereotypes and brings powerful blasts of emotion. Their music is passionate and dynamic, layered with hoarse screamy vocals and soft interludes. “The Blue Letter have a fairly convincing release in Prima Facie, an album that’s quite the step up for the Richmond, VA-based Blood & Ink label. With six heavy yet brooding and lengthy songs making up the album, comparisons to ISIS and Envy should be plentifully forthcoming.” — PunkNews

Post-Chromodal Out! represents the next step in Iranian-American saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh’s quest to create a seamless cross-cultural exchange between the Persian dastgah and American jazz. This record introduces a piano re-tuned to a variation on Persian temperament, performed by Grammy®-nominated pianist Vijay Iyer, who takes on the instrument with an improvisatory mastery befitting his own reputation for combining jazz with the music of different cultures. The addition of the re-tuned piano results in music that is like nothing that has been attempted before. It promises to shake Western music’s harmonic foundation, while still concentrating on the lyricism and rhythmic sensibility of jazz, a further testament to the transformational potential of this unique American art form. “Scintillating … a radical cultural exchange” — New York Times “Thick with ideas and inspiration.” — Los Angeles Times

After three successful releases with Re-constriction Records, SuperCoolNothing marked 16volt’s first official outing with a major label. Of course, to hear the caustic guitars and programmed rhythms sounding like heavy metal filtered through a vat of battery acid, topped off by Eric Powell’s signature melodic rasp, it becomes clear that the band stayed true to its virulent brand of industrialized rock. With renowned figures Bill Kennedy and Joseph Bishara helming the production duties, the music on SuperCoolNothing possesses a crisp sound quality that is clean but far from sanitized. From Klayton: “I’m excited to finally present The Complete Cellout Vol. 01. Most of the tracks on here that aren’t remixes from other artists are versions of my songs I completely reworked from the ground up for the Celldweller 2010/2011 live show. I’ve put a ton of time into remixing and reproduction, but I’m not the only one who put a lot of time and effort into making this disc into something you could bang your head or shake your booty to. Drivepilot, Bare, Blue Stahli, J Scott G, Joman, Josh Money, and Toksin lent their skills and turned this disc from ‘pretty good’ to ‘totally badass.’ Hope you enjoy it as much as we all enjoyed making it.”

“Klayton has ruthlessly forged a fantastic metal-infused dubstep sound tainted with unholy guitar riffs and haunting, glitchy, and highly nostalgic melodic work. When accompanied by a growling and slightly robotic lead synth capable of shredding the very fabric of reality, nothing can stand in the way.” —DUBSTEP.NET

Rare release from an African country with a unique musical tradition. Weekly show at Barbes in New York, as well as summer festival shows. Extensive review and radio copies to national and local music outlets. Social media campaigns via YouTube, Google+, and Twitter. RIYL: Extra Golden, Amadou & Mariam (early records).

Representing a musical tradition that stretches back hundreds of years, Guinean griot Mamady Kouyate plays with a melodic virtuosity that pulls in listeners who love great guitar players. In the ’60s and ’70s, following Guinea’s independence from France, music-loving president Ahmed Sekou Toure fostered the development of a modern sound through the institution of a system of local, regional, and national orchestras in which the artists were encouraged to create a modern sound based on traditional music. Mamady, musically raised in that system, has recreated and preserved the sound of his culture in New York City with the Mandingo Ambassadors. The music of the Mandingo Ambassadors is more driving than highlife and more guitar-based than the massive horn lines central to Afrobeat. Held steady by the rhythm section and electric guitar accompaniment, with stirring vocals by Bebe Camara, there is ample space for Mamady and other soloists to stretch out. “Dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system.” — BEN RATLIFF, NEW YORK TIMES Track Listing: Alimatou • Dery • Kensan • Domany • Fakoly • Kaira • N’diagno • Kaningbe Key Markets: Hometown: New York

Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives is a self-made monument to what might have been, and an explosive first example what is yet to come. Five years on the road has hardened the band’s sound and forged the new songs like iron in flame. Gone are any hints of ’70s revivalism, buried beneath thick sludgy riffs and thundering bass lines.
