His masterpiece is the “Officium Defunctorum,” published in Madrid in 1605. In this requiem—written for the funeral of Maria of Austria, daughter of Emperor Charles V—the composer reached a mystical intensity of expression. Ori Kam: viola TELEMANN: Fantasies Nos. 1–12, TWV 40 Georg Philipp Telemann published his “12 Fantasies” for solo violin in Hamburg in 1735. These pieces place him firmly in the tradition, established in the late 17th century, of such renowned violinists as Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, Francesco Geminiani, Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, and Johann Paul von Westhoff, culminating with J.S. Bach, who published his famous cycles of sonatas and partitas for solo violin around 1720. The focal point of such works was to produce rich contrapuntal harmonies on a solo melody instrument in music that went beyond pure practice pieces and captivated its listeners. Telemann succeeded in this by avoiding virtuosic acrobatics by the instrumentalist and instead allowing the catchy tunes and dance rhythms to prevail. This recording features Ori Kam, brother of clarinetist Sharon Kam, playing a version for solo viola in which the pieces have been transposed down by a fifth but are otherwise unchanged. The tone of the viola, warm in the lower register and possessing brilliance in the high notes, lends the works a new dimension of expression in comparison to the original. Ori Kam, playing in the Jesus-Christus Church in Berlin, draws from his instrument a sound that transcends all constraint and lets the listener simply float away with the music.

James Friskin was born in Glasgow in March 1886. His early musical talent as pianist and composer resulted in a piano scholarship to the Royal College of Music at the age of 14; five years of piano study with Edward Dannreuther followed. He was an original faculty member of the Juilliard Graduate School, where he taught until his death.
The Frith Piano Quartet was formed in 2001, and since its inception has played concerts throughout the United Kingdom. One of the Quartet’s goals has been to perform new and unjustly neglected works. In 2009 they gave the premiere of Michael Finnissy’s Piano Quartet, and in 2012 the world premiere of the Piano Quartet by Richard Roderick Jones.

This CD proposes cantatas with the soprano voice requiring one or two recorders, besides two sonatas for recorder and basso continuo. It is a homogeneous musical corpus, not by chance almost all contained in two manuscripts preserved in the extraordinary Santini collection, preserved in the Diözesanbibliothek Münster, with the exception of the cantata “Ardo è ver per te d’amore,” a manuscript copy of which is in the library of the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples.

But he never lost his Viennese fondness for melody, as these three works demonstrate—the Sonata with piano composed in 1953, and the two works for solo cello composed in 1982, when he was 92 years old, almost the last music he wrote.
REINER: Cello Concerto, Op. 34 • Sonata Brevis, Op. 39 • Elegy and Capriccio • Verses Karel Reiner (1910–79), a major missing voice in Czech music, suffered under both of 20th-century Europe’s major tyrannies (Nazism and Communism). This first CD of a series reviving Reiner’s music presents the large-scale Concerto he completed just before his internment in Terezín—first heard, in this live performance, only in 2010.

TELEMANN: 6 cantatas This is the fourth CD in the first complete recording of the 72 cantatas from Telemann’s collection Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst, published in Hamburg in 1726—the first complete set of cantatas for the liturgical year to appear in print. The cantatas are designated for voice, an obbligato instrument, and basso continuo, and generally take the form of two da capo arias with an intervening recitative. Although intended for worship, Telemann’s cantatas are a masterly blend of tunefulness with skilled counterpoint and vocal and instrumental virtuosity.

Anglo-Dutch composer Gerard Schurmann, born in the East Indies in 1924 and based in the US since 1981, first made his mark in Britain in the 1940s and ’50s as a pianist and composer, particularly of chamber music and film scores. His concert output is intense, passionate, tightly argued, and charged with energy, but also infused with lyricism, as these four pieces demonstrate.
Lithuanian pianist and composer Vytautas Baceviˇcius (1905–70) is one of the undiscovered pioneers of 20th-century music. His series of seven Mots (‘Words’) for keyboard—five for solo piano, one for organ, and one for two pianos—were written between 1933 and 1966, and show the evolution of his musical language from the post-Scriabin style of the early works, via the influence of Prokofiev and Stravinsky, to a highly individual modernism akin to that of two fellow radicals, Varèse and Wolpe.

Today’s leading Ukrainian composer, Myroslav Skoryk, grew up in Siberia, where his family was deported after WWII, and he began to write music under the tutelage of other political prisoners there. He later studied with Kabalevsky in Moscow before settling back in his native city, where he soon became an important teacher and is now a major figure in Ukrainian cultural life.
Farewell Recital
In August 2010, at the Presteigne Festival on the Welsh borders, John McCabe gave his last public piano recital, bringing to an end a career as solo pianist that had lasted half a century. McCabe—born in Liverpool in 1939 and a composer-pianist in the tradition of Beethoven and Rachmaninov—has always championed the music of his contemporaries alongside his own and that of the masters of the past, and this farewell recital included two works by friends and colleagues as well as his own grandiose “Tenebrae.”

The main textual source is the Passion of Christ according to St. Luke, Chapters 22–23. While the large-scale, chiefly eight-part choral compositions have their musical roots both in Russian Orthodox church music and in Gregorian chant, the melodic character and particular sound of our own times are also clearly present in Mørk Karlsen’s work. The two Bach cantatas presented here were written three years apart (1723 and 1726) for the same Sunday of the liturgical year, the tenth Sunday after Trinity. The Gospel for the day reports Jesus weeping over Jerusalem, and announcing its destruction. Marcel Ponseele thought it was very interesting to juxtapose these cantatas against two lamentations composed by Zelenka in 1722. In a span of four years, geographically closely connected, we have three musical settings of the same subjects. One lamentation is for baritone solo and the other for alto voice, performed on this recording by the French countertenor Damien Guillon.
