Gilmore and her longstanding musical partner & producer Nigel Stonier have journeyed into new territories this time around, with Regardless featuring more lush string sections than scruffy acoustic guitars and harmonicas. Nine months were spent in five different studios, hooking up with collaborators Seadna McPhail (Elbow), Danish producers The Suppliers (Ron Sexsmith, Martha Wainwright), and string arranger Pete Whitfield (Plan B). This is the year in which the country of Portugal will finally score a significant footprint on the global stoner rock map, thanks to Lisbon’s self-described “authentic rock ‘n’ roll disaster band” Miss Lava. Not that the quartet was born just yesterday; rather, Miss Lava has been snapping guitar strings, bashing drum skins, and tearing shins across the floorboards of European stages for half a decade. They inaugurated their recording endeavors with a self-titled, blood-red vinyl EP in 2008, and quickly followed with their debut full-length album, Blues for the Dangerous Miles, toward the end of 2009. John Lemke is a Glasgow-based composer and sound designer, originally from Berlin. Working across a great variety of media, he explores all things sonic through collaborations, live performance, film sound design, and especially his work as a documentary film composer for the BBC and Channel 4. Motivated by fusing elements of his more emotive film compositions with rhythm and space, John creates a distinctive sound blend on his debut solo album, where percussive, prepared piano collides with abstracted guitar landscapes and disembodied vocal textures to form a danceable, electro-acoustic whole.
