Written On Skin was jointly commissioned by the Festival d Aix-en-Provence, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and this recording was taken from the premiere in July 2012 at Aix-en-Provence conducted by the composer. Anyone familiar with the cultural life of the time will be aware of the importance of the Rothschild family, who were patrons of many prominent composers such as Mendelssohn, Herz, Bellini, and Chopin. The latter, in 1849, was eager to teach the teenaged “Rothschild girl,” whom he clearly considered very talented. Mathilde went on to become a respected, prolific, and well-published composer of beautiful music. Charlotte de Rothschild is an internationally renowned lyric soprano who specializes in oratorio and the art of song, whether lieder, chanson, folk, or art song. She has a particularly interesting and unusual approach in tailoring her recital program to specific themes; the best known is the “Family Connections” program in which all the songs are by composers who were either friends, teachers, or ancestors of her famous family during the last 200 years.

Evil Penguin Records Dietrich Henschel: baritone Boris Berezovsky: piano MAHLER: Wunderhorn Songs Recordings of the Wunderhorn Songs are extremely rare, and even concerts and recordings devoted to Wunderhorn materials are unusual. Mahler translated the clash between the fairytale surface and deeper significance into some of the most exotic, visionary, and uncomfortable music he ever wrote. Acclaimed German baritone Dietrich Henschel presents a rare fusion of the dramatic content and vocal import of these songs, teaming up with Russian piano virtuoso Boris Berezovsky. The unique detail of this new CD is in the fact that Dietrich sings all the songs himself, though they were intended for male and female singers. The album is a special release to mark the future launch of a film project about the War Compromises, titled Wunderhorn.

The release combines two highly contrasting works, for a disc that is both moving and uplifting. The Symphony No. 5 is a generally tranquil work with music influenced by Ravel, with whom Vaughan Williams had studied, and is scored for very traditional forces. The Symphony No. 8 is dedicated to Sir John Barbirolli, and was premiered by the Hallé in 1956. It is the shortest and least serious of the symphonies, and has a more exotic instrumental color, with an enhanced percussion section.

Melodiya USSR State Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra Boris Khaykin: conductor USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra Evgeny Svetlanov: conductor GLAZUNOV: The Seasons, Op. 67 • Chopiniana: suite for orchestra, based on piano pieces by Frederic Chopin, Op. 46 Melodiya presents some rarely performed ballet gems by Alexander Glazunov! A pupil of Balakirev and Rimsky-Korsakov, and musical heir to The Five, Glazunov was also a careful student of Tchaikovsky’s works (the composer also appreciated his young colleague’s aptitude), and his ballet music continued the tradition of Tchaikovsky’s “symphonic ballets.” The Seasons was ordered by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, director of the Imperial Theatres, and was completed in 1900 to be choreographed by Marius Petipa at St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Theatre. The suite Chopiniana, an orchestration of diverse pieces by Chopin, was composed in 1892. Sharing the love of many Russian composers for Chopin’s music, Glazunov displayed a magnificent sense of style and orchestral skills.

USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra Evgeny Svetlanov: conductor TCHAIKOVSKY: The Seasons: 12 characteristic pieces, Op. 37a • Serenade for String Orchestra in C major, Op. 48 The Seasons and the Serenade for Strings were composed in the late 1870s/early 1880s, in a period of the composer’s first creative uplift. Those were the years when the author of Symphony No. 4, Eugene Onegin, and Swan Lake stepped into an age of genuine artistic maturity, and not only his large-scale dramatic opuses but also smaller pieces composed for a narrower circle have the seal of that maturity. On this recording, Tchaikovsky’s compositions are performed by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov, a recognized master of interpretation of Russian symphonic music of the 19th and 20th centuries.

This new recording features symphonic and concert works performed by such outstanding conductors as Evgeny Svetlanov, Dmitri Kitayenko, and Maxim Shostakovich. It is difficult to think of another duo where each of the partners is a great musician who has reached the pinnacle of perfection in his art, and a composer with his own unique style. But so it happened that these two men, so different in terms of temperament and works, teamed up to leave one of the greatest marks in the history of the world’s performing arts. Kreisler and Rachmaninov thought very highly of each other; this is what allowed them, two born soloists, to achieve an unbeaten duo that will remain an amazing example for generations to come. Here, Melodiya presents a unique album of violin sonatas by Edvard Grieg and Ludwig van Beethoven, and a duet for violin & piano by Franz Schubert. The recordings were made in the 1928 in the United States.

Melodiya Yakov Flier: piano CHOPIN: Complete Mazurkas Chopin’s mazurkas are an inexhaustible wealth of images and moods, attractive to both classical newbies and sophisticated connoisseurs. Images of a distant and dear homeland, lyrical contemplation, a gross folk dance, poetic sketches, the rustle of ballroom gowns, and the rattle of spurs — Chopin put his whole soul, inspired fantasy, and artistic skills into these miniatures, many of which are as deep and serious as his sonatas and ballads. A lot of pianists included Chopin’s mazurkas in their repertoire, but only few of them had the courage to play them all. Yakov Flier was one of the most prominent representatives of the Soviet pianistic school, and a successor of the Russian Chopinists’ tradition. A performer and professor who educated a whole galaxy of bright students, Flier combined romantic spirituality and virtuosic freedom with genuine artistic prowess. Opera d’Oro A generation ago, few would have predicted that an operatic tenor weighing over 300 pounds would become a household name, a media icon, and a sex symbol even into his sixties, but it happened — and that phenomenon attracted millions who without him would have paid little attention to opera, and through him learned to love it. This was based on a unique combination of personal charm, an ability to project both joy and humility toward his audience, and above all, the effortless, gleaming brilliance of the high note that defines the great tenor, and which earned Luciano Pavarotti the nickname “King of the High Cs.”

This recording tells a love story through a number of short but elegant compositions. Even small-scale works can be great in their own way and, compiled in such a creative manner and performed by such excellent musicians, they offer the listener an hour of sheer amazement and amusement. From Jacques Ibert’s Divertissement for chamber orchestra (when the couple first meets), via Anton Heberle’s Concerto in G major (the wedding music) through to Peter Heidrich’s Variations on Happy Birthday (the happy ending and final celebration), the orchestra accompanies the couple not only when they indulge their love of tea during the honeymoon, but also adds music from all eras as a backdrop to their relationship.

With Richard Wagner’s bicentenary coming up on May 22, there are all kinds of sounds in the air and words to be read about the great Romantic music dramatist. But where among all this are we to find the truly original messages? Some of them are to be encountered right here, because when German Brass tackles Wagner, expectations are always high. The brass ensemble is justly regarded as one of the world’s finest, consisting of the best musicians from Germany’s leading orchestras (including Bayreuth’s!), so this is a special event: music made, played, and recorded with total commitment.

Dresden has always been a place for celebration, both in the golden Baroque era and today. Only recently did Hartmut Haenchen, who was born in the Saxon city on the River Elbe, celebrate his 70th birthday in an atmosphere of sympathetic public approval. The Berlin Classics label has already released many of his recordings, quite a number of them with his Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Chamber Orchestra, which he has been directing for over 30 years. The tradition is continued, in honor of his birthday, with this festive recording.

Between 1709 and 1711 (the dates are uncertain), he was engaged as a double bass player in the celebrated Dresden orchestra, one of the best orchestras in Europe at the time. The date of the composition of the Trio Sonatas is usually placed between 1720 and 1722. We do not know who first performed them, but since the Dresden orchestra included some of the best instrumentalists of the time, there is no lack of candidates: oboe players La Riche and Richter, bassoon players Böhme and Cadet, Pisendel or Volumier for the violin part of Sonata III, Weiss on the theorbo perhaps… Above all, one can imagine Zelenka himself playing the violone part, enjoying making music with friends…

Kagel’s development was Promethean, only comparable to that of someone like Stravinsky. One of the reasons for this is his lifelong heightened sensitivity to repetition. We understand Kagel in the same way we understand a foreign language we do not speak fluently. We may know a certain word, but one of its multiple meanings will remain hidden.

Stradivarius Anna Radziejewska: mezzo-soprano Ensemble Algoritmo Marco Angius: conductor SCIARRINO: Cantiere del poema • Tre duetti con l’eco • L’altro giardino What does making new music mean today? Perhaps Sciarrino does not reply, but invents organisms in sound that go beyond the very concept of musical piece; a sound material that breathes, pulsates, becomes fluid, or is rendered geometrically into configurations with their own apparent vitality. This language amplifies the most direct and hidden data of physiology, of nature, and of our own corporeity, converting them into a theatre of listening, into illusionist but well-rooted devices, with infinite developments of sense, meaning, and references. The work becomes an experience in perception; no longer musical pieces, but pieces of reality in which objective and subjective face each other and are confused in an elliptical listening space.

In Gervasoni’s music, the almost obsessive search for detail in sound is one of the keys to reading, or rather listening and interpretation, of the two compositions. The simplicity of the sonorous material, combined with a dense network of senses, hidden or obvious, creates a sort of ambiguity in his music which is the manifestation of that paradox dear to composers: the paradox of simplicity.

These are all premiere recordings of the music of neglected pianist, lyricist, and composer Reginald King (1904–1991). He was a soloist with Henry Wood at the Proms, but his greatest successes were between 1929 and 1964, when he gave over 1,500 BBC broadcasts with the Reginald King Orchestra. This CD includes Mark Bebbington playing “Song of Paradise,” which was King’s signature tune, and its mixture of warmth, nostalgia, romanticism, and sheer escapism sums up the piano oeuvre of this composer.

Sir Philip Ledger: A Musician’s Legacy

The Petrof Trio originated from an idea of Jan Schulmeister, violinist of the Wihan Quartet, in 2009. Its members are prestigious chamber players who bring years of concert experience and youthful energy to their concert programs.

This CD celebrates Philip Ledger’s pianism and musicianship, which were never eclipsed by his vision of the future of the performing arts and the operational skills he brought to the conservatoire scene in the UK.

Renata Fusco & Massimo Lonardi

Animals in Renaissance Music: The Bestiary by Leonardo da Vinci Renata Fusco: canto/Massimo Lonardi: renaissance lute A musical bestiary compilation focused on the Bestiary and Fables by Leonardo da Vinci This small musical bestiary (something like the collections of fables popular during the Renaissance), concentrates on excerpts from the Bestiary and Fables by Leonardo da Vinci. The author took his annotations from both Pliny the Elder’s Natural History translated by Landino, and from proverbs, rhymes, and sayings from oral history.

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN

Symphony No. 9 (trans. Liszt for two pianos) Bruno Canino: piano/Antonio Ballista: piano BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 9 (trans. Liszt for two pianos) The Ninth Symphony was a hurdle for Liszt. In 1851, he transcribed it for two pianos (R 376); it was published in the same year and was performed by the exceptional duo of Clara Wieck and Johannes Brahms. His crisis occurred in the last movement; Liszt initially thought it was impossible to transcribe, to the extent that he excluded it from the first publication. It was later inserted, despite the composer’s lack of conviction, into the complete edition of the Nine Symphonies by Beethoven/Liszt (R 128) in 1865, dedicated to Hans von Bülow.

The Art of French Violin

This recording, following Raphael Terroni’s pioneering account of Scott’s Sonata No. 3, was entirely down to his vision and efforts. His recorded legacy, which should been larger, includes Lennox-Berkeley, Goossens, Scott, Leighton, Holbrooke, Cooke, and more. This, displaying so many of his strengths and enthusiasms, was always especially close to his heart though.

30

Prizewinner of many international competitions, Solenne Païdassi won First Grand Prix in the 2010 Jacques Thibaud competition, a distinguished award that no French violinist had won since 1955! Together with Laurent Wagschal, she pays tribute to the great Belgian and French violin school, inherited from Ysaÿe.
